In recent years, Mary Chapin Carpenter--once among the most promising stars of the folkie infiltration of Nashville ("Down at the Twist and Shout," "I Feel Lucky")--abandoned all desire to dot the country music charts. Free of that ill-fitting yoke she returned to being what she really was all along: A literate acoustic singer-songwriter. In 2004, she released a tour de force, Between Here and Gone, which combined affecting social commentary on the events of 9/11 with personal meditations on her changed life as a married woman living in rural Virginia. The Calling picks up where that album left off, using the same co-producer, pianist Matt Rollings, and core musicians, including John Jennings, who helped Carpenter shape her sonic landscape some 20 years ago. If the new album goes farther in advocating a political conscience--"On with the Song" takes jabs at the jingoistic rubes who dissed the Dixie Chicks, while "Why Shouldn't We" insists we'll have worthy heroes in office again one day--it largely invokes the same quiet, warm, and conversational tone as its predecessor. On the whisper-soft "Twilight," which frames a perfect, peaceful evening with a nearly spiritual grace, a listener might easily imagine himself chatting with the artist about long-held secrets and shared experiences, the Blue Ridge Mountains looming in the background. That is part of Carpenter's gift--connecting with her audience's shadow self, using her deeply nuanced alto to fill even the simplest words with profound knowing. As a pure craftsman, however, she ranks with the giants of past generations in capturing the small, bruised hearts seemingly lost in the chaos of a catastrophic event. "Houston," one such song here, recalls Woody Guthrie's great "Deportee" in its power and the pathos of the Hurricane Katrina victims who were forced to evacuate their homes, leaving everything behind but fear and hope. "Mama's got her baby/Sleeping in a grocery cart," it begins, at once setting up a picture of wrenching desperation. Carpenter, no stranger to blue moods herself, knows how tough it is to emerge from a dark period of pained restlessness to find one's very self again. The album's soothing closer, "Bright Morning Star," like much of the record as a whole, offers a beacon of light and safe harbor for those shipwrecked on life's rocky shores. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

As a songwriter and performer, Mary Chapin Carpenter has long since transcended the traditional notions of genre and style, finding widespread acclaim for her poetic, elegantly - observed compositions. The Calling, her first release for Zoë/Rounder, is the most topical album she's made in her twenty-year career. While it unequivocally addresses issues both public and political - from the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina to religious zealotry to the trial-by-radio of the Dixie Chicks -- there is also something deeply personal about this extraordinary collection of songs. The album is a powerful, provocative meditation on the mysteries of fate and circumstance, which mingles timeless questions with contemporary issues. Introspective, defiant and deeply resonant, The Calling is a profound set from one of modern songwriting's most distinctive voices.

Featuring "It Must Have Happened," "We're All Right," and "On with the Song."

5 out of 5 stars CD of the year.......2007-07-23

This is an absolutely awesome cd, captivating, and relevant to the times. Song after song of great lyrics backed by musical arrangements that don't let go.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific songwriting.......2007-07-19

This is one of MCC's best CDs. Her writing is heart wrenching on some songs & uplifting on others. Her lyrics are so honest and eloquent. I think she's one of the greatest songwriters of her generation. And her voice, though lower, is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Best Yet!!.......2007-07-10

I have been a huge Mary Chapin fan since her career began. I have to say that this Album is one of the best. She uses her voice to speak out against the fear-based prejudice that has gripped our country. Thank you Mary Chapin Carpenter!

Mary Chapin Carpenter's first album of new material in three years has been hailed as a fine example of pop music for adults. This is both true and misleading. In changing producers (from John Jennings to celebrated piano man Matt Rollings), the literate singer-songwriter has slightly broadened her sophisticated Americana sound, and although it's less rhythmic as a whole, her acoustic-folkie approach remains at the core of her classic style. And while "Between Here and Gone"--which addresses the theme of travel and transition, the fragility of life, and the ephemeral nature of happiness--might be said to concern itself with grown-up issues, most of Carpenter's writing has always done just that. Yet this stunning album, informed both by her 2002 marriage ("Elysium," "River") and by the events of 9/11, is more introspective than much of her early work. The alto-voiced singer is compelling throughout, but never so much as on "My Heaven," inspired by Alice Sebold's novel, The Lovely Bones, or on "Grand Central Station," in which a New York City ironworker, standing on the bucket brigade at Ground Zero, hears the voices of the dead, desperate to find their way home. In moments such as these, Carpenter reestablishes herself not only as a world-class poet, but as an artist of the first order. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Carpenter at her best - finally!.......2007-03-19

If you are the MCC fan of songs such as "A Town" and "10,000 Miles", as I am, then welcome to Carpenter bliss! No rock-a-billy here, thankfully. Carpenter delivers a slew of music on "Between" for rainy, chilly and fog-filled nights. The mournful strings and piano are a perfect accompaniment for her soothing vocals. The opening track is as fast as this chanteuse is willing to go. From there on it's slow motion. She does pick up a bit again with "Beautiful Racket".

"Girls Like Me" is a chilling description of the power of simplicity and how we often overlook the no frills people in our lives for the more flashy. Carpenter seems to be saying she's done with "flash". Brava. Also wonderful are "Grand Central Station" and "The Shelter of Storms" - just Mary, an instrument or two and tons of soul. Simply wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Once again..........2007-03-10

Once again Mary Chapin Carpenter has amazed me with her beautiful words and music. She's an artist that is very much an individual.

The latest (to date) offering from the cerebral country singer. This is not background music. Chapin's music reads like beautiful poetry and she deliver's it with a captivating voice.

We had ordered this for "The Dukes of Hazzard" theme song for our 4yr old and our whole family has fallen in love with the cd. It makes me want to share some of the old fun and simple shows with my children. I forgot about some of those shows. It brings back good memories for my husband and me and the songs are new and exciting for our children. It's a nice change from children's cd's, but our children still think it's fun. The sound quality is good and the songs included on the cd are a great mix. I would definately recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Carpenter Collection.......2007-06-12

Good compilation of MCC songs. Probably 5 stars if you're a fan. MCC sings songs about life, the small details and the big events, and does it with real feeling and insight. Good tunes:

Shut Up and Kiss Me - very good, kinda rocks, kinda arousing forward attitude from a woman to a man

I Take My Chances - great lyrics, ranging from amusing to ironic. Nice line on televangelism: "he'd show me the way to the Lord in return for my personal check. So I flipped the channel and lit another cigarette."

I Feel Lucky - a good, fun, kinda catty song. The singer being fought over by Dwight Yoakum and Lyle Lovett is a good image.

Quittin Time - VEry good, a moving song about a love that's dying but the lovers just aren't sure how to finally wrap it up.

Down at the Twist and Shout - kind of homage to Cajun culture. A festive number about letting loose at a bayou bash.

Hard Way - very good, it's moving and gritty. Singer and lover have fought for what they have; stuff wasn't just handed to them.

5 out of 5 stars Good collections.......2007-05-30

A good collection of most of her best songs to the date of publication.

5 out of 5 stars Completely delightful CD.......2007-05-12

I often listen to this CD which never fails to make me smile. Carpenter's talent and humor shimmer throughout, and "Ten Thousand Miles" captivates me each time I listen to it.

Skeptics might say that Carpenter's smash version of Lucinda Williams's "Passionate Kisses" pales beside the tougher original, or that Mary Chapin is but a folkie in poor-fitting country clothes. They're not exactly wrong, but her million-selling third album finds its charm in a spare Americana sound and smart, imaginative material. Carpenter bridges country and folk audiences, much as Emmylou Harris has done, and as few others have managed. And she's a better singer than generally recognized. Originals such as "I Am a Town" and the title cut are genuinely evocative, and "Walking Through Fire" and "I Take My Chances" have an emotional edge that is as raw as it has been rare on country radio in the '90s. --Roy Francis Kasten

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An essential for any CD collection.......2007-04-23

Like probably many people, I've been a fan of Chapin since this album was released in 1992... truly it was her breakthrough album. And with good reason, too: not only was it an incredible country-crossover when country music was the "latest rage", but it's also an unbelievably good album.

After so many years of being a fan - I own all of her albums - I finally had the chance to see her in concert at the Warner Theatre in Torrington, CT. The show consisted of her and only three other musicians (including longtime cohorts John Jennings and John Carroll). No drummer accompanied them. She and the band were seated throughout the show as evidence of "how old and creaky" they've become (her words, not mine). They simply played, and the music was soulful, deep and magical.

It inspired me to finally praise "Come On Come On", which is still to this day my favorite album of hers. Yes, she's done other amazing work both before (the wistful folk and bubbly country of "State of the Heart", 1989) and after (the insightful and post-9/11-weary "Between Here and Gone, 2004)... but I still like this album best. Simply put, there isn't a bad song on it. I can't imagine anyone not being riled up by the entirely-justified feminist rant of "He Thinks He'll Keep Her", or not be moved by the sad, sullen beauty of "I Am a Town".

Simply put: If I was allowed on 10 CDs to accompany me to a desert island, this would be one of them. If you don't own it, you should... it's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Top-Tier Album.......2006-12-09

I never tire of this album.

People have called MCC a folk artist. I guess that is true in the purest sense of the word. MCC writes songs and the people sing them.

Lonely technicians whistle along with "I Feel Lucky" at production facilities in the middle of the night.

A six year old girl is spontaneously singing "Passionate Kisses" right now, a capella, while playing with her dolls. She does not even realize she is singing, but the notes are sung perfectly in full voice.

"Passionate Kisses" still plays on the radio anywhere that Country Music matters. Country Music programmers in Southern cities and towns retain a few archetypal standards that are not subject to the whims of time, and it is one.

Somewhere, a man or woman is finding solace in "The Hard Way."

Somewhere, someone is making a lifelong vow. And this album is playing in the background while that vow is made... probably "Not Too Much To Ask" or "I Take My Chances." The vow will be kept.

"He Thinks He'll Keep Her" is based on the young MCC's indignance about a paternalistic Geritol ad back in the 70s. That's pretty damn special. She wrote it herself and it absolutely rocks. I'm not always enthusiastic about feminist angst but that's cool.

Buy two copies and tell your neighbors. Mary Chapin Carpenter is a giant.

5 out of 5 stars MCC & Country music stars cannot reproduce music like this........2006-11-18

Yes, I bought the CD a long time ago (10 years).

But, I was shuffling thru. my songs in the ipod, I relaized what an amazing CD this was. I will say that I was just starting to listen to country at that time. And that "Come on Come on" is one of the earliest intros. to country. Now, I can say that I have heard plenty of of new country, and not many artist matched the quality of selected songs in terms of music, vocals, writing. This CD has proven to be a good benchmark. IMO if you can pick a CD that you have listened to a while ago, and are still able to listen to, then that is great CD.

My favorite songs on CD:

Not too much to ask - Duet with Joe Diffie.
Passoinate Kisses, He thinks he'll keep her, I feel lucky, The bug, The hard way.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars Plus CD.......2006-08-26

This is one of my favorite Mary Chapin Carpenter CDs. It deserves to be 5 Stars Plus. He Thinks He'll Keep Her is about a woman and a man being married through the years and one day their love for each other is gone. I Feel Lucky is a song about Her winning the lottery and she tells how she feels lucky about it. My favorite line in the song is hey Dwight hey Lyle boys you don't have to fight doggone I feel lucky tonight. The Bug is about the way life is. You never know if you are the bug or the windshield. My favorite song on this CD is Passionate Kisses. She wants everything a woman should have and passionate kisses also. Not Too Much Too Ask is a wonderful duet with Joe Diffie. I Take My Chances and The Hard Way are also good songs on this CD. She had 7 singles on this CD. The whole CD is very good and if you are a MCC fan then this should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars enjoy the music.......2006-03-22

The 1994 sequel to her mainstream country breakthrough on Come on Come On further underscores Mary Chapin Carpenter's true identity, more Ivy League folk rocker than new country cowgirl. Her coolly delivered, deeply felt songs include meditations on family, community, and social injustice without rant or cant, never more so than on the gently incisive midlife reflections of the title song, which filters historic milestones and childhood lessons through its delicate verses. Elsewhere, she sketches a heart-breaking, restrained speculation on the inner life of a blind, deaf mystery man ("John Doe No. 24") with the economy and detail of good short story. The set's many love songs are no less intelligent, emotionally authentic, or moving. Chapin Carpenter's elegant yet earthy alto is beautifully framed in the settings, coproduced with longtime collaborator John Jennings, that balance jangling guitars, rippling piano, occasional fiddle and crisp rhythm sections closer to the best of L.A. country rock than what normally emanates from Nashville. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2006-12-14

MCC is a true artist. Everything she has done has built up to this pinnacle. She is truly one of the absolute best singer-songwriters in the world today, an absolute treasure.

This is one of those albums that just takes you to another level, another place. There is no way to categorize this music; it is just good listening! Every song is cohesive. Every song is its own story, and the entire album ties together so wonderfully.

5 out of 5 stars One of Mary Chapin Carpenter's Best Albums.......2006-12-04

I thought I had reviewed "Stones in the Road" a long, long time ago. Don't ask me how I managed to skip writing a splendid review of one of fellow Brunonian Mary Chapin Carpenter's best albums. Here she offers a somewhat more somber, bleaker tone, than expressed in her earlier albums, "Shooting Straight in the Dark", and especially, "Come On Come On". Still, this works as a rather convincing, quite coherent body of work, replete with her eloquent, thoughtful lyrics and rich melodies, all of which were written solely by herself. In this regard, "Stones in the Road" is most reminiscient of Elton John's "The One", which should be regarded more for offering an entire album of excellent songs often thematically related to each other, than merely as an album which yielded a couple of great hit singles like "The One" and "The Last Song". My favorite song from Carpenter's 1994 album remains the title track "Stones in the Road", which is without question, among her finest ballads. But I also like a lot her feisty "Shut Up and Kiss Me", which owes more to her interest in honky tonk country music, than the otherwise predominantly folk/rock orientation of this album. "Stones in the Road" is yet another reason why I regard Mary Chapin Carpenter as one of our great country/folk songwriters, whom I compare favorably to both Nancy McCallion of The Mollys, that great Tucson, Arizona-based Celtic/country/Mexican band, and of course, Lucinda Williams, whose song "Passionate Kisses" was covered by Carpenter in her album "Come on Come On", and became one of Carpenter's greatest hits.

5 out of 5 stars ...the chosen road..........2006-04-21

...i can't believe i never reviewed this album...this is simply the most brilliant piece of wax to ever exist for any one who actually appreciates the art of writing a song (and not just songwriting)...so few and far between are there exquisite masterpieces like this that exemplify the craft so beautifully (other examples in this small, but important, category, are Tina Vero's "In The Waiting", Andy and Denise's "Sunlight In Goodbye", and Linda Dunn's self-titled "Linda Dunn" album.)...
Get these four albums and you won't even need a 'top five'...

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2006-04-10

I couldn't think of a good title for this review, but the word, "Wow" keeps popping to my mind in regards to this album, so I figured that would do.

I owned three Mary Chapin Carpenter albums in my collection before purchasing Stones in the Road recently. I had felt that Shooting Straight in the Dark and Come On Come On were almost perfect albums, and would be very difficult to impossible to beat, but I had wanted to expand my MCC library. Then I got Stones in the Road. Wow.

As much as I love music, it's rare that I actually love entire albums. Usually I really love 2-3 songs, the bulk are okay, and then there's the duds. Not so with Stones in the Road. As another couple reviewers have stated, it is that rarest of things, the perfect album. I think the fact that three of Mary Chapin Carpenter's albums that I own (out of 5 currently) fall into the "love the entire album" category speaks very much to MCC's talent as a singer and songwriter. There are only a very few other artists in my collection I can say that about for multiple albums. (And actually, I also really like the entire Hometown Girl album, but it doesn't have nearly as much impact as the others.)

It's been a long time since I was completely obsessed with listening to an album over and over again when I first got it, but I surely did that with Stones in the Road. The songs cover a wide variety of topics, from songs about love to MCC's signature story type songs. Unlike at least one reviewer, I don't feel the dearth of uptempo songs hurts this album in any way. Maybe because I tend to like her ballads more anyway.

The album is so good in its entirety, that it's difficult for me to pull out individual songs to point to specific stand-outs. So I'll just choose one to comment on. This is Love is one of, if not the, most powerful songs about love that I've ever heard. It's not your typical, "Oh I love you so much, you're fabulous" love song. It's a song that demonstrates knowledge of what true love is, and how it transcends life's decisions and heartaches.

I still think the albums Come On Come On or Shooting Straight in the Dark are better introductory albums for people who are not yet dedicated MCC fans. But if you are a fan and do not have Stones in the Road yet, it's an absolute must and you'll only be sorry it took you this long to acquire it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-12

I own nearly 800 CDs, but there are few that I would feel compelled to review. Stones in the Road is an absolute stand-out. It has been part of my collection since it was first released, and it continues to amaze.

Amazon.com essential recording

In addition to subverting the conventions of greatest-hits discs--only 5 of these 17 tracks appear in the hit versions from Carpenter's studio albums--Party Doll does a better job of balancing the singer/songwriter's moods than any of her releases since 1992's Come On Come On. Here, upbeat celebrations such as "Down at the Twist and Shout" (included in a live Super Bowl take) and "I Feel Lucky" comfortably rub shoulders with the quietly sweet ("Dreamland," originally on an early-'90s various-artists set of lullabies) and brooding ("Stones in the Road") sides of Carpenter's work. Finally, her rendition of Mick Jagger's title tune hints that she has vital work yet to do. --Rickey Wright

"This Shirt" - the mere lyrical content to this song can bring tears to my eyes - that's how good it is!

10,000 miles - quite simply "beautiful" - the ultimate song.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous songs, great artist and singer. A great listen........2004-10-21

The songs on this album range from down-home country (Shut Up and Kiss Me, I Feel Lucky) to introspective folky (Stones in the Road)to just plain good-time toe-tapping fun (Down at the Twist and Shout). My personal favorite is the lush and gorgeous 10,000 miles, a long, generous and heartfelt wave of emotion set to music. It is truly a masterwork, the kind of recording that only a very few of the most gifted artists could ever construct. This song alone puts Mary Chapin Carpenter into the elite league of All-Time Greats, be it folk or country. But there's much more! Ms Carpenter is not content to be a fabulous singer and songwriter; she's obviously compelled by a powerful innerspring of talent and humanity to new horizons of discovery for her -- and, because she is so perceptive and talented -- for us. This ain't cookie-cutter music, folks. This is the REAL thing. For anyone who's tired of playlists and me-too musicians, Mary Chapin Carpenter is a gust of the highly-charged clear breeze that follows a thunderstorm and lights up your lungs, eyes and heart -- and has echoes of the storm that preceded it. Are there gripes about this music? Only if you don't like emotion, feeling and involvement. This is class A-plus music top to bottom, from an A-class artist. Party Doll was my first CD from this brilliant musician, but I'm rapidly buying the rest of her collection, and haven't been disappointed yet. I doubt that you'll be either. Love you, Mary.

5 out of 5 stars A good value, and a great place to start.......2004-03-20

I was only casually aquainted with Mary Chapin Carpenter's music before picking up this album. The hits I knew were all here, and so was a lot more material I have come to love as well. I was a bit leery that "Down at the Twist and Shout" was a live version from the Super Bowl; this song was the primary reason I wanted a MCC album, and I was concerned a live version recorded in a stadium during the Super Bowl might be of inferior recording quality. But I needn't have worried, the sound is great, and the performance is energetic and fun, with a verse in Creole thrown in for good measure. "This Shirt" is probably my favorite track I was unfamiliar with, but the entire album is quality; there are very few 17-track albums by any artist where I can say I enjoyed every song. I now look forward to exploring her original albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for an introduction to this great artist.

Album Description

A metallic rush of guitars and thundering drums, Deftones' music both epitomizes the hard-and-fast glory of post-grunge alt-metal and blows it wide open with innovation. As the Northern California-bred quintet evolved through a string of acclaimed albums and incessant, high-velocity touring, they also incorporated modern rock influences including The Cure and The Smiths into their Soundgarden/Tool/Rage Against the Machine/Pantera-inspired sonics. Now Maverick's new compilation sheds light on lesser-known output with covers, unreleased mixes, video B-Roll, and other choice rarities.

All I have to say is that this album rocks. The music selection is great. Their cov er of No Ordinary Love by Sade is one of my favorite covers ever done. Simple Man could of been done a little bit better but i'm sure Lynard Skynard would of been proud. They rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i put off buying this partly from some of the press it was getting but it's not bad at all. the dvd's ok, nothing to get excited about unless you're pretty hardcore but the cd's better then it's getting credit for. a nice surprize. i for one think the covers are great listens. it's a much better "B-Sides & Rarities type" package then the other's i've heard. i'd reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars Odds and Sods Collections Are Never Perfect.......2006-12-29

First off, the DVD is great, and that's probably the reason most people buy this set. It's nice to have all the videos in one place. As for the CD, it's a mish-mash and suffers as a result, but that's to be expected. Most of the songs on here are just curiosities, especially the four reworked/acoustic versions of older songs. You probably won't revisit them too often, with the possible exception of the acoustic "Be Quiet and Drive" which is very compelling. Then there are EIGHT covers, which vary in quality. The Deftones' interpretations of "Savory" and "The Chauffeur" are fantastic, and "Simple Man" and "No Ordinary Love" are also unique and good. "Wax and Wane" is not a very good song in its own right, so I don't care for the cover. Unfortunately, "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" and "Please Please Please..." just aren't great covers. Finally, there are two Deftones originals, "Crenshaw Punch" and "Black Moon." The first is a great addition to their catalogue, while the latter is purely a rap song which I don't like. In terms of pacing, the disc is great until the four-song set of "Black Moon"-"If Only Tonight We Could Sleep"-"Please Please Please..."-"Digital Bath (acoustic)," which almost kills it, though it's revived by "The Chauffeur." All in all, you're sure to enjoy several of these tracks (at least "Savory" and "The Chauffeur") as a Deftones fan, but you're also likely to find at least a couple of songs to be lacking.

On albums like State of the Heart, Shooting Straight in the Dark, and Come on Come On, Mary Chapin Carpenter melded folkie singer-songwriter concerns with melodies and hooks that country (and, occasionally, adult-pop) radio programmers could get behind foursquare. Since those late-'80s/early-'90s high points, the Brown University graduate has often pushed niceties such as catchiness to the artistic back burner. Despite some too-languid stretches, Time* Sex* Love*, her first studio disc since 1996, finds Carpenter recapturing some of the balance that marked the best of those earlier records. "In the Name of Love" lifts off with a trademark midtempo groove and a complex lyric about attraction and independence. Other tracks subtly spice Carpenter's formula with lovely, sighing vocal harmonies and fleeting evocations of Beatles-era AM radio. Her need to attempt major statements about the sad realities of grownup life may ultimately be Time's biggest flaw; where's Carpenter hiding her gifts for limning small moments (State's "This Shirt") or events that few other songwriters would think to commit to tape (Shooting's comet-appearance commemoration "Halley Came to Jackson")? There's reality, and there's reality. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Melodic Treat!.......2006-10-28

For years Mary Chapin Carpenter has been labeled a C&W artist and for a while country music embraced her, and it's a good thing they did for if not she would still probably be doing nightly gigs at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and no one except those fortunate few would get to hear her. Now that she's established she can do what what she wants and if this is it, I couldn't be more pleased.
This is a beautiful album full of memorable melodies and emotionally passionate lyrics. She has always written with passion and truth and is in my opinion one of the finest songwriters ever. C&W she is not and fans of Shawn Colvin and Ali DiFranco should check this out.

3 out of 5 stars A real mixed bag from a great talent.......2004-05-09

Let's get one thing straight. Mary Chapin Carpenter is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time, bar none. Her previous and subsequent albums have been consistently stellar and far more ambitious and intelligent than anything her contemporaries have tossed at us. And if "Time*Sex*Love*" were presented by any other artist, it would rank as a career highlight. So why am I only giving it three stars? Because this is the only one of her albums that I have trouble listening to from start to finish without skipping tracks.

Why is this? Because there are just too many slow, sound-alike ballads in the middle of the piece (five, to be exact), sandwiched around the uptempo "This is Me Leaving You," which is probably one of the weakest songs Carpenter has ever written. The album just drags for me, and doesn't seem nearly as vital or alive as "Stones in the Road" or "Come On Come On," or even this year's "Between Here and Gone." Carpenter has always been generous with the number of songs presented, but with fourteen songs and a bonus track she would have been well-advised to cut one of the ballads to aid in the album's momentum.

That said, there are many things to like about this album as well. The '60's throwback sounds of "Maybe World," which would sound right at home on a Mamas and the Papas album; the insightful and beautiful "Late for Your Life," which she has taken to closing concerts with; the eloquent plea to slow down and enjoy life which is "The Long Way Home"; and the first single "Simple Life," which bombed on country radio evidently because it dealt with issues other than chasing men or crying over busted romances. Ironically, the first half of the album is the best, when the reverse is usually true with this artist.

I know I'll be in trouble with other fans for not loving this album, but sorry. I love Carpenter's music, whether its the fun, uptempo stuff or the slow, beautifully observed ballads. This one, however, just doesn't have the same effect on me as her other albums. But make no mistake, second-rate Carpenter is still better than anything Faith, Martina, Shania, Reba and JoDee put out on their best days.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet Reflections.......2004-04-25

This is one of Mary Chapin Carpenter's best albums she's recorded yet. I look forward to her new one BETWEEN HERE AND GONE with lots of excitement. *TIME *SEX *LOVE is a great CD of reflective songs that you will more than likely enjoy. Her first new album since the lackluster 1996 album A PLACE IN THE WORLD, this is a step in the right direction. There's some really nice ballads with her warm vocals all over them. "Alone But Not Lonely" is a favorite of mine, some really nice lyrics and a nice melody. The closing "Late For Your Life" is also nice, and it has a bonus hidden track. "What Was It Like" is another great ballad, heartbreaking. There's some nice uptempo songs like "Slave to the Beauty", "Whenever You're Ready", "In The Name Of Love", "This Is Me Leaving You", etc. Other good songs include "King of Love", "Swept Away", "The Dreaming Road" and "Someone Else's Prayer". Overall a strong album from Mary Chapin Carpenter that should have a place in every CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars She keeps growing as she goes...........2003-10-01

and so should all of us. As much as I love every other album she has sung, I love this one as another step forward in life. More experiences, more lessons learned, more choices---reflections based on new directions taken as we grow older.

Unlike some of the other slightly disappointed reviewers, I WANT MCC to keep evolving by turning over new stones in a new road. She is being honest and true to herself, and I love the woman and hearing the voice of that woman as her life changes.

It's obvious that she continues to grow, and I want to hear what new things she's discovered. My loyalty is to the woman and the messages she shares. I have no expectations except a rewarding experience and a sense of continued identity as MCC continues to sing.

Today, I am feeling especially connected and spiritual, because last night I heard Mary Chapin, Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin singing live and intimately sharing conversation with each other and their Pittsburgh audience. Strength and beauty, self-discovery and sharing, hard-won choices and coping with reality, stories of everyday life and consequences of loving---all underlined by driving guitars and ghosts I could identify with.

These songs are art for enjoyment and enrichment. These are artists reaching out to their audience and trusting us to benefit from their gifts. That's how I receive their songs. How could I object to them?

5 out of 5 stars Underappreciated Music.......2003-08-18

I think Robert Plant had things summed up pretty well when he was commenting about Led Zeppelin's third album. He noted that many fans had responded by asking (paraphrasing), "But where is our "Whole Lotta Love Parts II, III and IV?"

Time*Sex*Love* is not "Stones in the Road". Neither is it "Come On" nor is it "Shooting Straight in the Dark". It is also not any of the other fine works from this artist. It offers something different than what preceded it, although one can clearly hear some similarities to earlier material. (So for the folks who might be afraid that MCC's angelic voice may not even be recognizable, relax.)

Music evolves...artists change too. If that weren't the case, then pretty soon everything would begin to sound exactly the same and where's the fun in that?

Mary Chapin Carpenter is an excellent songwriter. She took some different approaches on this album (yes...they are still albums). Some people (at least one of whom thought it was time to respond to the "critics") think it's great when an artist tries new ideas. Others seem to think that an artist somehow "owes" it to the fans to simply repeat or reorganize the songs that have made the artist popular.

Time*Sex*Love* is very good music. It's enough that an artist of Mary Chapin Carpenter's skill and performing talent composes lyrics and music and then gets into a studio with other talented folks who can expand the basic idea into a work of art.

Thanks to MCC for having courage to try new ideas and making them work. I was really happy to find that the album (I cheated and used a CD) was not musically identical to any of the other MCC albums I own.

Where do I sign up to purchase more underappreciated music?
