2 out of 5 stars Pick up "Night Ranger's Greatest Hits" instead.......2006-09-14

This CD and the one entitled" Night Ranger's Greatest Hits are almost identical, but are different in this way:

"Best" contains "I Did It For Love". "Greatest" contains, instead, "Rumours In The Air" and "Restless Kind". The other 10 tracks on each CD are the same. So, which one to buy? My choice is the one with the extra track. Also, in my opinion, both tracks on "Greatest" are better than the one on "Best".

In addition, here's hoping that the band or record label decides to release a true "Greatest Hits" or "Best Of" album that will contain about 15 or 16 songs. Or maybe a multi-disc compilation that will include some rare tracks.

Night Ranger fans would surely delight to see something like that.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs, great sound, great value!.......2006-08-22

It sure seems like people have an axe to grind with these 20th Century Masters "Best Of" collections. The common complaints are usually with the song selection and the album length. No matter what songs appear on a "best of" or "greatest hits" package, there's always going to be a track that gets left off that you think is one of the band's better tracks. As to the album length - while it's true they left room for another 30 minutes worth of material, this compilation is not supposed to be some all encompassing anthology. The 20th Century Masters series serves as an introduction to the artist and their most noteworthy material. Typically that means 10-12 tracks, which obviously won't fill the entire disc.

I think the record company nailed it perfectly with the Night Ranger 20th Century Masters album. They picked the best 2-3 songs off of each of the band's early albums, cleaned up the sound considerably, and presented them in a very affordable package. You get all of the band's radio hits, including the extremely huge power ballad "Sister Christian", digitally remastered, all for about half the cost of the average CD.

The Best of Night Ranger: the 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection is an ideal introduction to the AOR powerhouse that is Night Ranger. It provides a great overview of the band's style, as well as giving existing Night Ranger fans a chance to hear this classic material with greatly improved sound.

5 out of 5 stars A very underated band!.......2005-12-05

Night Ranger was one of those bands from the '80s who should have been a LOT bigger than they were. Most fans were introduced to the group with the tune Don't Tell Me You Love Me. Of course the band become popular with the song Sister Christian. The problem with Sister was if that was the only tune most fans knew they probably thought Night Ranger was a "pop" band which was not the case. This band could rock with the best of them. Night Ranger was one of those few '80s bands who could please the hard rock fans as well as the pop fans. They are still touring today and if you get the chance check them out. But before you do pick this up so you can rock with the band all night. You can still rock in America indeed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Killer Soundtrack!.......2004-05-08

Back in the day, I dismissed Nightranger in a few seconds as pop fluff. Then a friend (and awesome guitarist) turned me on to Nightranger's great musicianship.... Well, I was converted! With the plastic "arm" on the turntable pulled back, Nightranger records kept repeating.... and soon became embedded as part of the "inner soundtrack" to my "inner movie." The "inner movie" is something like this: Through a computer glitch, party guy Rufus Chang (Willie Ames) has to attend an uptight eastern prep school. His roommate is Edwin Billington III (Scott Baio), proper son of Senator Billington (Lorenzo Lamas). Rufus (Ames) quickly loosens things up! He and Edwin (Baio) sneak out the window and hit the D.C. nightlife, to the sound of Nightranger's "Eddie's Comin' out Tonight!" Rufus, *claiming* to actually be Edwin (stay with me here!), meets Claire (Phoebe Cates), daughter of the President. When she won't "go all the way" that night, Rufus does some heavy soul searching... to "Sister Christian!" (He's walking by the Lincoln monument, jacket over shoulder and head down)....

Later that night, Rufus (Ames)and Claire (Cates) are in their respective beds, each remembering the moments from earlier that night in collage style... accompanied by, you guessed it - "When You Close Your Eyes!!".... Well, eventually Claire (Cates) finds out who Rufus *really* is, and decides she loves him anyway... as she's riding a horse on the beach, topless. The climax is the big dance, where Edwin (Baio) finally shows everyone what his big research project has been all year: Breakdancing! Needless to say, "(You Can Still) Rock in America" blasts, while the kids show their American leader parents that you *can indeed* still rock in this great country!!! Thank you Rufus!! And of course, Rufus (Ames) and Claire (Cates) finally "get together"... to the sweet sounds of "Sister Christian!" Classmate Chumpy (Buddy Hacket) climbs a rope to the window to see some "action." But alas, he slides down and gets a rope burn! Boiiing!

And credits roll "Thanks Nightranger!" alongside wacky Lorenzo Lamas outtakes... all to the sound of Nightranger's "Goodbye!"

3 out of 5 stars Do it right, or don't do it at all.......2004-04-27

Collections like this really boil my nads. We all know by now that cd's can hold up to 80 minutes of music, so why do record companies keep putting out half-baked collections like this? To be honest, this collection contains pretty much of what the casual Night Ranger fan could ever hope for, but that's beside the point. The point is that WE DON'T WANT HALF A CD ANYMORE!! Fill it with other seldom heard or even better, previously unreleased stuff. All it can do in the end is help you. The casual fan could easily be converted to a fanatic if he/she were to develop a taste for the band at hand. From there it's only a short journey to "Hey, this is the last Night Ranger cd I need to complete my collection." Trust me. I've been there.
And another thing about Night Ranger while I've got your ear. I was never a huge fan of the band in their heyday, but they opened for Pat Benatar in Dayton, Ohio last year and my wife was dying to see her. I wasn't expecting much out of Night Ranger, but halfway through the set I suddenly realized how many of the songs I was singing along with, and how incredibly good they were. They played like men on a mission for the 70 minutes they were allowed, and at the end of the night I cheesed my wife off by telling her that Night Ranger blew Pat Benatar off the stage. (Sorry, babe. Sometimes the truth stings a little.) My point? In a nutshell, catch this band live and stay away from bad compilations. If you catch them live you'll be making your own compilation anyway.
