Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971's Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron's intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as "Easy Living" and "Traveler in Time." But the 'ard 'n' 'eavy Brit rockers also had their sensitive side, as evidenced by the more reflective Ken Hensley-penned tracks like "Circle of Hands" and "All My Life." --Billy Grenier

2 out of 5 stars One of signs of the Death of Rock & Roll.......2007-07-01

The absolute worse record of the seventies, but, in spite of that every metal head throws this up as a classic...Save your money....Give up on this one.....Belongs in the heap of "What the hell was I smoking ?" when i liked this. Really, really lousy stuff.......See for yourself....just dont, buy this junk..............

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-05-25

While Uriah Heep seemed to always have a few songs that rubbed me the wrong way on most of their 70's albums, they did occasionally create a pretty consistently enjoyable album too. Salisbury is one, and I believe this is the other one (and maybe Return to Fantasy, though I'm not sure yet).

I don't think this band is quite the same as Deep Purple because Uriah Heep likes to instead rely on vocal melodies to carry the music, whereas Deep Purple was more of a guitar/bass/drums kind of band (even better as a live act).

Anyway, Demons and Wizards is a nice choice if you prefer solid vocal work from your early 70's hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Very good Uriah Heep album.......2007-05-14

This is the first band that I ever loved, I was eight years old when my brother won "Uriah Heep Live" in a contest on radio. I was listening to this album every day. The first album I bought was "The magician's Birthday" and a friend of mine, also eight years old, bought "Demons and Wizards". We both still enjoy listening those two albums, they are among the best from the band. In my opinion, these two albums have the most beautiful cover art ever made ! "The Wizard", "Circle of Hands" and "Paradise" are pretty good songs. Did somebody, like me, ever saw that "Circle of Hands" is based on the same chords than "In the court of the Crimson King" from King Crimson? Even if I know these two songs since a very long time, I didn't notice this very recently...

5 out of 5 stars It made me a fan forever.......2007-05-14

This was the first UH album I've heard and it made me a true fan forever. They played progressive rock before "progressive rock" term was defined when a string of british and german bands hoped on the vagon. But it was more then just a label that you could afix to their music. If you like a good rock music and looking for something new from the 70's that you are not familiar yet, this album is a great start to explore Uriah Heep. I'm sure you will want to go and listen all previous work and a few follow ups. Even though I do follow their path even now, their best work was done in the 70's. Just enjoy it while you can get it on CD, or, even better, listen their LP's like me.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Album........2007-04-21

I'm listening to the album for the first time in many, many years, and those who talk about it holding up surprisingly well are dead-on. I'm a little nervous about what Paradise/The Spell is going to sound like, because my experience with that is from the vinyl version, and CD's often mutilate the soft texture that vinyl gives to some stuff. The album does not in itself have the same overall power as Led Zeppelin IV, but then again, Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog, and Rock and Roll have been played so much that they are mostly dead as impetus for creation. Paradise/The Spell has a beautiful structure to it that probably is superior in many ways to Stairway to Heaven, as noted by other reviewers.

4 out of 5 stars Very good and something special.......2007-05-14

This is the first album that I have ever bought, so it reminds me lots of memories from the past...how time pass too quickly !
This cd is a classic album for Uriah Heep, the band was at its peak !
All songs are magical with some special mention for "Echoes in the dark", "Rain", "Tales" and the title tracks. "The Magician's Birthday", these are favorite of mine.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Follow-up Album!.......2005-12-22

"The Magician's Birthday" was the second Heep album by the classical line-up featuring Hensley, Byron, Box, Thain and Kerslake. It was also the second album with a Roger Dean cover. And moreover, it was the second album the band released in 1972.

After a long 1972 tour Uriah Heep were rushed back into the Lansdowne studios to record a follow-up to their break-through and much acclaimed album "Demons and Wizzards".

As Hensley states in the notes, they felt that were never really given the time it took to record the album, which was originally planned to be a "complete" concept album. Though it may have been rushed it nearly matches its great predecessor. The band, and especially Hensley as a songwriter, were at the peak of their creativity and many of these songs have become classics and favourites. The extensive list of bonus-tracks clearly illustrates what a great period this was for the band. Unfortunately the hard work took its toll on some of the band-members; but that's another story.

The first track, Hensley's dramatic "Sunrise", is the perfect opener, with great lead and harmony vocals.

Another highlight is the melodic rocker "Blind Eye", driven by acoustic guitars and featuring a nice twin-guitar theme; also a Ken Hensley song.

Two songs released as single A-sides were "Spider Woman" (Europe) and "Sweet Lorraine" ( America), and where the first is a rather traditional heavy-rocker, "Sweet Lorraine" has all it takes to become a classic. Great whining riff, fine breaks and a catchy chorus. Simply one of the most memorable Heep recordings; written by Box, Byron and Thain.

As the most versatile songwriter in the band Hensley also demonstrates a talent for writing melodic ballads such as "Echoes in the Dark" and the quiet piano accompanied "Rain" with great lead vocals.

"Tales" is the closest the band get to playing folk-rock on the record; another fine recording.

Though the title track has its moments, it somehow feels too longwinded with its ten and a half minutes playing time.

Among the bonus-tracks Gary Thain's "Crystal Ball" is a nice surprise; sad that his constitution was strong enough to take the strain of heavy touring etc.

Though not quite as consistent as "Demons and Wizzards" still one of Heep's finest albums.

5 out of 5 stars Eclectic, Mystic-Sounding Heavy Rock/Protometal.......2005-10-19

One of the best albums from the early 70s/late 60s, back when hard rock and progressive rock were together forming an offshoot - along with influences from classical, eastern music (see Led Zeppelin), heavy blues and eclectic jazz (see Judas Priest's first album, "Rocka Rolla") and a host of other musicforms - to come up with heavy metal. Uriah Heep isn't really considered metal but 'protometal', but it's close enough to appeal to metal fans as well as fans of the late 60s/early 70s sound, hard rock & progressive rock, and quality eclectic music as well. This album is distinct mystical heavy rock, and a shining example of its type of music.

Uriah Heep tends to tread a lot of welcome fantasy-type ground, which is also covered here, but there are other themes here, like the vibe capturing the exhiliration of romance on "Sweet Lorraine" and the fearful doomy lyrics of "Tales". "Sunrise" is an alltime gem, fitting well into the beloved realm of fantasy-esque lyrics but in this case, for me, resounding even more powerfully with its combination of the 'missing love'/'undying love' themes. Great intro to the song and tremendous (and influential) musicianship all throughout. Title track "The Magician's Birthday" jumps from musical style to musical style within itself - including a part featuring what sounds like a kazoo! - although, regretfully, the coolest guitar parts on the whole album wind up representing the 'evil' part of the tale. Still exuberantly cool though. Musicianship and vocals great all through the album, with some of the best quirky-sounding synthesizer sounds ever laid down, doing exactly what a synthesizer generally does Best - not imitating other instruments but creating brand-new, usually bizarre, sounds you don't get off traditional instruments.

I should note that I noticed in the search engine there are new versions of this with bonus tracks out, which I couldn't review because I haven't heard them. Most of these bonuses are 'alternate versions' (sometimes 'single edits') of other Heep tracks but you still may wish to hunt down audio samples of the tracks represented on the expanded editions before deciding which version you want to buy. Now Hopefully, someday there'll be a big grand boxed set collecting All of Heep's rare tracks, but until then....

Whichever version you end up going with, you can't really go wrong with this. Great, emotion-spanning and inventive album whose vast influence will, unfortunately, probably never be acknowledged by professional critics but is no less vital for it.

4 out of 5 stars The best Heep.......2005-09-25

This cd is their best of their old ones. It encompases what they were. They were almost progressive and very much hard rock. They
sounded like Deep Purple and Sabbath at times. If they would have kept on like this album they would have gone extremely far.
After this they release some mediocre albums which didn't hold up to Sabbath or Purple. Then they got really bad.

But this cd rocks out totally. It brings back good memories
and all rockers must have this one in their collection. Heep
continues to rock but not like this album does, too bad Byron is gone because his voice inspired many metal vocalists like Dickinson ,John Arch and Rob Halford, what a shame

5 out of 5 stars Great Uriah Heep Album.......2004-12-15

THE MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY is a great Uriah Heep album. It's standouts are "Sunrise" and "Sweet Lorraine", but the other songs should not be counted out, either. The group would make one more great album, SWEET FREEDOM, before problems with bassist Gary Thain would derail them musically and commercially. Here, though, it looks as if they could go on forever.

5 out of 5 stars Look At Mott.......2006-07-21

There has been a band going under the 'Uriah Heep' banner now since 1969, and no one can take away their influence on hard rock music, only Mick Box survives from the original line up. But combining his undeniable popularity, with musical skill on his chosen musical weapon the modern electric guitar, a great vision of what the customer wants, and an incredible faith in his ability to succeed within the band, he has kept the band going through all the sticks and arrows that have been thrown at them. (A certain journalist from America's prestigious rock magazine 'Rolling Stone' said she would commit suicide if the band made it, when she reviewed their debut album. Fortunately for her after millions of album sales later including 19 studio albums and countless live albums and compilations, playing concerts to thousands of adoring fans all over the world, the band has not held her to her word).
The line up of the band today, Mick Box on lead guitar, Trevor Boulder(ex-David Bowie's Spiders from Mars, and Wishbone Ash) on bass guitar, Phil Lanson on keyboards, Bernie Shaw on lead vocals and Lee Kerslake on drums (Lee has been with the band since the fourth album only missing one along the way after a spat with keyboardist Ken Hensley, but when he left the band it left an easy way for Lee to come back as he had just been evicted from 'Ozzy Osborne's Blizzard of Oz')Have now been together for over twenty five years but it certainly was not like that at the beginning.
In their early days 'Uriah Heep' were one of the main bands who gave the inspiration to the 'Rockumentary' Spinal Tap, one of the finest comedies ever made about rock culture, with it's self combusting drummers, revolving stages, and dramatic band break ups.
'Uriah Heep' had five different drummers before their fourth album, to be fair the fifth was Lee Kerslake, who became the fifth and seventh drummer after Chris Slade stepped in for the 'Conquest' album, before going off to 'The Firm' with Paul Rogers and Jimmy Page. Throughout their career 'Uriah Heep' have had five lead singers, four keyboard players, six bass players, but only one lead guitarist good old Mick Box who today looks more and more like one of the wrestlers from the American wrestling series than ever, although he still plays a mean guitar.
'Uriah Heep' were formed in 1969 by taking the four members of the band 'Spice' David Byron on lead vocals, Paul Newton on bass, Alex Napier on drums, Mick Box on lead guitar, and adding Ken Hensley on keyboards to add an extra dimension to the instrumentation and the writing skills of the band. Ken Hensley had been in 'Toe Fat ' with Cliff Bennett and a certain Lee Kerslake.
Their first album 'Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble' (1969) had a very good cover! It also contained the opening track 'Gypsy' which is still in the live set list today, which does have a certain appeal in it's opening riff, but then rather fades away as an excuse for a long complicated keyboard solo, which to be fair it still is today. After that things rather went downhill with the rest of the album searching for direction and including an ill advised blues work out imaginatively titled 'Lucy Blues' a cover of 'Come Away Mellinda' which would of been better left in the hands of a Tom Jones wannabe, and some other assorted plod rockers. Six months later the band came out with their second album (and third drummer, second drummer Nigel Olsson got an offer from Elton John, which he could hardly turn down) 'Salisbury' (1970) (Even the cover was awful). This started in fine style with a song called 'Bird Of Prey' with it's harmony vocals, excellent soloing from both guitars and keyboards, giving hints as to what the band were capable of. This was then followed by a rock ballad which had a very stop start rhythm, clever but a bit confusing for the new fan, then it was back to hard rock for the flat out 'Time To Live', next was the now classic 'Lady in Black' an acoustic sing-a-long which had wonderful harmonies, and was great for a sing song at concerts, then when you turned the album over (Ah The good old days of vinyl) there was another rocker in 'High Priestess' before a sixteen minute piece which was the title track, it had brass sections, sweeping violins, you name it 'Uriah Heep' added it onto the song, listening to it now it really was a mess. Leaving the record buying public in complete confusion.
Things had to be put right, and ten months later that year they were. `Look At Yourself' (1970) still is to many the ultimate Uriah Heep and hard rock album. The cover is great, it's a mirror, look at yourself! Get it? Opening with the title track it hurtles out of the tracks like some demented heavy metal demon, Hensley and Box thrash out the songs riff before the wonderfully strong voice of David Byron calls his brethren to the cause, the rest of the band harmonizing behind him, then after a rampaging guitar solo, the riff is picked up again to bring the song to a rousing crescendo with the percussionists from 'Osibisa' brought in to add their sound to the climax, this time the session musicians were used to good effect. The pace is not let up by the following song 'I Wanna Be Free' as the chorus is driven along by a pounding beat, but with sympathetic vocals, and fine musical flourishes, with all the guitars in the band standing out. At track three is probably Uriah Heep's most famous song 'July Morning' a song that no version of the band could ever contemplate going on stage and not playing before they leave, it must of also been licensed out to every 'Best of Hard rock albums' ever made. After Ken Hensley's strident organ chords open the song up, Mick Box takes the song to a higher level with some truly rockin' guitar, before the whole thing is brought down to allow the vocals of David Byron to take over, the song is a loving ten minutes long, showing the full range of all the soloist's, building to many crescendo's before reaching a dramatic conclusion with everybody having a go at the solo's and Manfred Mann brought into the studio to add his deft touch on the moog syntherziser, a classic rock song.
The following songs on the album are not an anti-climax 'Tears In My Eyes' is a great little rock 'n' roll song lots of loud guitars, and the harmony vocals would not do shame to any of the great American vocal groups of the Fifties. 'Shadows Of Grief' is another epic song that perhaps never gets the recognition of some of it's peers, maybe this is because there just was not room for it in the live set with all it's twists and turns, but it is like a hidden treasure on the album. It has aged very well even though it still glorifies in the use of stereo with all the instruments and vocals switching from one speaker to the other in dramatic fashion, as if the band had found a new toy to play with. Finally the band drop the pace a little as if needing to catch their breathe, with the beautiful ballad 'What Should Be Done' there is nothing wrong with having one ballad on a rock album as long as they do not dominate proceedings. The album is brought to a rollicking conclusion by 'Love Machine' a number that just rocks, bringing the music to a conclusion as it did Uriah Heep's live set at the time. A job well done, 'Look At Yourself' was the first 'Uriah Heep' album to break into the American Top 100 and the British Top 30. Of course the band would hit pay dirt with the next years 'Demons and Wizards 'album but would it all of been possible with out a good look at yourself?
Over the next thirty years 'Uriah Heep' did make some awful yawn inducing albums (Like 'Fallen Angel' in 1978). But make no mistake 'Look At Yourself' is a diamond hard jewel
Mott The Dog.

4 out of 5 stars Criminally underrated, indeed...........2006-01-12

Uriah Heep was my very first concert!! 1973 Magician's Birthday tour in Boise. WOW!! Talk about a lasting impression: great show, Dave Byron was fantastic, and the songs...well, if you're a fan, I don't need to tell you. I think they opened with Sweet Lorraine - - can it get much better??

Back then, my brother & I didn't have a lot of money for records, but we bought every one of theirs, including Look At Yourself, which is undoubtedly one of their heaviest, while still being melodic...July Morning being a stellar example.

By the 80's, it was a guilty pleasure if you liked Uriah Heep, because they were not considered cool ('course, if someone else's only sampling of them was Ken Hensley's truly sorrowful solo effort, "Proud Words On a Dusty Shelf", who could blame 'em for thinking Heep probably sucked, as well?)

It's great to know there are so many other Heep fans out there, still. Dave Byron's singing inspired me later to become a professional singer myself, and the indelible mark this band left on me had a big impact on my preference to this day for melodic, hard rock and progressive/European influences with a bit 'o fantasy thrown in.

This album, their first with Gypsy, Demons and Wizards, and Magician's Birthday are their best efforts. Buy 'em all and enjoy a trip back in time with a band who managed to write some true classics in spite of what the nasty critics said, and gave us a classic singer many of us thankfully can never forget.

3 out of 5 stars A little excessive for my tastes.........2005-10-29

The first two songs 'Look At Yourself' and 'I Wanna Be Free' fall in the ranks of pure hard rock genius for the early 70s; sizzling guitar solos, heavy hammond playing that puts Jon Lord to shame (IMHO) and solid explosive drumming that holds everything together. What's more, David Byron is at his finest exhibiting great vocal range and dynamics without one embarassing moment.

However, after these two songs, the whole thing slowly slides into a horrible art rock nightmare. July Morning sounds like it was building into something strong with the instrumentals getting progressively intense and when you think the climax is about to happen, it turns into a ballad. Tears in My Eyes actually has a good slide guitar riff and some catchy 'LA LA LA' vocals from Mr. Byron. But there is still an odd feel to the song. Shadows of Grief has a real akward if not grating operatic hook which repeats itself tiresomely throughout the whole song. What should Be done is a nice funky little soulful mellotron ditty which gives us a break from the artsy dronings. Lastly, Love Machine doesn't fit with this album at all. It's your basic boogie-rock baby baby song with nothing interesting happening. Why they would think to lump this 'foghat' type thing into an art-rock album is beyond me.

I would still get this album for the first two songs, but for good solid albums, I would recommend Sweet Freedom, Magician's Birthday, and even the first self titled one. In my opinion, those albums contain better composed hard rock / progressive experiments. STAY AWAY FROM SALISBURY!! WHAT A DISASTER THAT WAS!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated Classic - Perfect for a July Morning!.......2005-05-08

Look At Yourself (1971.), Uriah Heep's third studio album

Uriah Heep, in the early 1970's were very much the band which everyone but the fans of the band themselves, loved to hate. They got loads of stick from critics often calling the heavy rock band the 'Poor Man's Deep Purple'. However, in my opinion, these are particularly unfair criticisms on a band who have produced some excellent music during their career and 'Look at Yourself', Uriah Heep's third studio album, released in 1971 stands as one of their finest and most accomplished efforts.

Its particularly sad that this band is so underrated, because, if this album made sales based on the quality of the music, it would have sold quite a few million copies. The tag which Uriah Heep gained of being very similar to Deep Purple is a little unfair. I will not deny that they are in a very similar mold to the great Deep Purple, employing a thick hammond organ and heavy guitar style but nevertheless, Uriah Heep have their own trademark sound and I would not waste a second in dispelling any claim that they were Deep Purple rip offs. Instead, what you have with Uriah Heep is a group of excellent musicians who, certainly with this album made some amazingly powerful music. Dave Byron, the lead singer with Uriah Heep at the time is an excellent and much underrated vocalist, as is the guitar playing of Mick Box and the diverse instrumental abilities of Ken Hensley, who also proves himself to be a great songwriter on this album. 'Look at Yourself' is a masterpiece from start to finish, with loads of explosive moments of power.

Thankfully also, the 'Look at Yourself' album has undergone an excellent remaster by Sanctuary Records. I would definitely recommend the deluxe issue over the standard 7 album track issue. The deluxe edition is one of the best remaster efforts I've seen. The original tracks are of excellent quality but what you also get are 7 bonus tracks, giving you double the music from this fruitful time for Uriah Heep. The bonus tracks include BBC session versions of the 'Look at Yourself' title track and 'What Should Be Done'. Theres alternate versions too of these two tracks and an extended version of 'Tears in my Eyes'. However, perhaps the best additions are the two session outtakes which have only been discovered in the last 15 years. 'Whats Within My Heart' is one, an excellent acoustic track and 'Why' is a remarkable 12 minute jam. The liner notes within the CD sleeve are also excellent with pictures, interviews and lyrics all included. So, the deluxe version is definitely the way to go if its available readily and is of a reasonable price.

The seven tracks on the album are masterpieces in their own right. The album opens with the title track, 'Look At Yourself', a blasting, guitar and keyboard heavy rock song with a great chorus build up. 'I Wanna Be Free' is a bit more like a ballad but is just as heavy as the first track. 'July Morning', the 10 minute epic, is worth the price of the album alone, often acclaimed as Uriah Heeps best song, its a killer from start to finish. The band themselves recorded it on the first take - some great lyrics sung with heart by Byron builds into a long keyboard and guitar interlude which is brilliant. 'Tears In My Eyes' is another great rock song and 'Shadows of Grief' is a more unusual, 8 minute epic, with a heavy vocal sections and an interesting harmonising finish over lots of keyboard. 'What Should Be Done' is a piano based, lighter track - written in quick time, this is no filler, its one of the best tracks on the album. 'Love Machine' is a 4 minute hard rocking finish to the album in typical Heep style.

'Look at Yourself' deserves much more recognition than it deserves. I often say Deep Purple are criminally underrated but this band are even more so. It always amazes me how this album stayed in the charts for just 1 week and reached only #39 - its a classic with plenty of great songs within. Any fan of heavy rock should not overlook Uriah Heep's music and especially not this masterpiece album.

I was a young college student when this was released, and am in agreeement with other reviewers that this is a classic! I might be a little biased in reminiscing to a different generation, but think that newcomers will appreciate this too. "The more things change, the more they remain the same."

5 out of 5 stars When too many dreams come true..........2007-07-06

This is the Ken Hensley story, a story which has been pretty much told by all the old classic rock dinosaurs in interviews for magazines, DVD special features, etc, over the recent years, now Ken has decided to make a concept album out of it. You know how the story goes, I wanna be a rock n roller and if I want to follow my destiny I have to sacrifice everything in order to get to the top while on the way going through blood, sweat and tears...you get where this is going? It's nothing original, but this is fun to listen to, kind of plays like an audio book, with great vocals and music telling the story. The guest vocals are the seller for this CD. Ken Hensley wrote all the songs (music and lyrics) and he sings bits here and there, but if he would have sung everything, I probably wouldn't have had picked this up. But seeing Jorn Lande and Glenn Hughes names as guest singers on this sold me. And to see Jorn sings on many tracks was quite a surprise. Here's a run down on the tracks:

1. (This is) Just the beginning - vocals - Jorn
2. We're on Our Way - vocals - Jorn / Ken Hensley
3. Blood on the Highway - vocals - Jorn
4. You're Got it - vocals - Jorn
5. Doom (scene 1) - instrumental
6. It Won't Last - vocals - John Lawton (of Uriah Heep fame!)
7. Think Twice - vocals - Eve Gallagher
8. Doom (Scene 2) - instrumental
9. There Comes a time - vocals - Ken Hensley
10. Okay - vocals - Jorn
11. What You Gonna Do - vocals - Mr. Glenn Hughes
12. Postscript - vocals - Ken Hensley
13. I Did it All - vocals - Ken Hensley
14. The Last Dance - vocals - Mr. Glenn Hughes again

So Jorn sings 5 songs, Glenn sings 2, and John Lawton sings 1, these tracks are the strongest vocally, but in fairness this CD is a great listen from beginning to end. Every one is at the top of their game, the mood of the CD is light, nothing too slow, but nothing too hard. Ken did a great job putting this together, and a smart job by enlisting some great vocal talent. Fans of the Heep, Jorn, and Glenn Hughes will definitely need to pick this up.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-06-29

The new Ken Hensley effort in more ways than one has a feel of a retrospective of his own experience and life as a musician over so many years. The songs show all sorts of ups and downs most musicians faced in the 70s both musically and comercially.
After seein Hensley live in Ogre, Latvia (some of the songs from this album were played there), I decided to check the album out. I must admit that it's stunning. At times there is a bit too much of everything on the CD (check out the package), but the whole album has a very good feel although being a little sad. The songs on the CD ((This is) Just the Beginning, Okay, I Did It All etc.) are of the highest quality ranging from melodic ballads to strong rockers 970s style). The Last Dance has already been published before but the song has it's way here and is a true gem. It remins you what great music Ken Hensley has made both as the member of Uriah Heep and as a solo act.

4 out of 5 stars Uriah Heep - '20th Century Masters-The Millennium Collection' (Mercury).......2006-11-10

Really believe this CD's title is meant to be like a corporate ca$h cow. Didn't fool me for a minute.Twelve tracks of Uriah Heep's early works. It's always great to hear these early '70's hard rock gems, like "Gypsy", the wailing "Lady In Black", "July Morning", "Sweet Lorraine" and their only two hits (at least here in the U.S.) "Easy Livin'" and "Stealin'". Simply LOVE hearing either of those tunes on an album rock station at 3am. Obviously aimed the towards the completists.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Classic Hard Rock.......2005-08-16

Do like rock and roll that's supposed to be fun, make you feel good, and make you smile? If you do, you might want to try this Uriah Heep collection. You'd never know it if you only listen to contemporary classic rock radio in the USA, but Uriah Heep were a potent live act in the early 1970s and recorded several gold albums. What did they sound like? If you can imagine a garage band doing a Deep Purple impersonation, you have a pretty good idea. They're definitely worth a listen if you're looking for music that doesn't take itself seriously.

The standouts on this compilation include a trippy ballad about "The Wizard," the fast paced shuffle "Easy Living," the Woodstock-era "July Morning," and the bluesy "Stealin'" whose rock-and-roll-as-outlaw-cowboy predates both McCartney's "Band on the Run" and Bon Jovi's "Dead or Alive." This CD represents the cream of Uriah Heep's early career and serves as a jumping-off point for exploring their (admittedly uneven) albums. All feature powerful keyboard arrangements and tongue-in-cheek lyrics.

Music like this is a great antidote for the largely humorless exercise modern mainstream rock has become. Uriah Heep will never win awards for originality, but there were few bands who seemed to absolutely enjoy what they were doing more than they. To me, their fannish enthusiasm is contagious. I hope you agree.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Single Disc Compilation, But............2004-09-06

If you only have enough cash for a single disc "best of" from this great & under-rated 70's band, this Millennium Collection is the definitley the way to go. The 1976 "The Best Of Uriah Heep" is a good single disc album, but only features 9 tracks compared to the 12 offered here. Plus the sound on the Millennium release is much better. My personal advice, however, is to scrape up the extra cash and purchase the vastly superior 2 disc set, "Classic Heep: An Anthology". "An Anthology" contains a whopping 30 tracks and gives a much better musical representation of Uriah Heep. If you're on a tight musical budget though, opt for this album and save you cash for the "Uriah Heep Live - 1973" cd.

5 out of 5 stars Uriah Heep is on the Top of the "Heep" in Rock 'N Roll.......2004-06-22

This CD will light your shorts on fire! You will be floored by the intensity of this CD! You will be singing to this CD and pretending that you are in the band! You will go psyco in a positive way from the genius that awaits you in this CD. What I am trying to say through all this nonsense and "crap" is that this CD is a must have for fans of Rock 'N Roll. Some of the best Rock 'N Roll songs that have ever have been writen have been writen and performed by Uriah Heep. Uriah Heep is so cool! They are one of the best bands ever! Check out this album! You will not be disapointed! I guarantee it!

1 out of 5 stars If you're a UH fan, buy the UK version... The U.S. version sucks! .......2006-10-26

Back in the 70s, the double-LP version of this UH album was as popular as "Frampton Comes Alive". However the CD version issued in the U.S. by Mercury/Universal IS NOT COMPLETE (UGH!). If you want to have the full LP edit, get the UK Castle edition, which includes among others the unforgettable "Rock'n Roll Medley".

5 out of 5 stars Heep's BEST live recording!.......2005-09-14

I am partial to this live recording as my wife and I were in the Birmingham audience when it was recorded.

Just like the Scorpions, Black Widow, Fingerprintz, Curved Air, Middle Of The Road, etc. I find Uriah Heep's live versions to be superior to their studio recordings.

This CD is a must for any UH fan!

5 out of 5 stars Uriah Heep cheap man's Deep Purple?.......2005-08-03

I DON'T THINK SO! URIAH HEEP WAS EVERY BIT AS GOOD!
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ALBUMS AND I MEAN REALLY
LIVE! FROM SUNRISE TO LOVE MACHINE IT ROCKS! DAVID BYRON
WAS A GREAT SINGER. KEN HENSLEY WAS A AWESOME SONGWRITER.
THE ENTIRE BAND WAS GREAT MUSICIANS. THE ONLY FLAW IS
THE SONGS LEFT OFF FROM THE ALBUM VERSION? ANYWAY IT
STILL ROCKS AND SOME OF THE BEST MUSIC OF IT'S TIME!

2 out of 5 stars Not Their Best.......2005-04-20

Okay for starters I ran into Ken Hensely when he was a member of the band BlackFoot and he kind of winced when I brought up this record. He seemed to appreciate the general support which I had for the band but didn't at all wish to dwell on this record choosing to focus on other Heep topics. Perhaps that should tell you something....

Anyway that encounter aside, there was a trend in the record industry at the time of the release of this album for bands to release live recordings since they , among other things, bought the bands time as they prepared for future studio work. Also recall that live recordings were perhaps they only way for those who missed the shows to somehow experience the concert. Still. this album doesn't capture the band at its best in terms of performance. I'm willing to forgive some of the fidelity issues as it was years before ProTools and Mastering PlugIns though Heep has performed much better in concert than was documented on this release. Obviously this is a matter of opinion and you will find Heep heads arguing about this endlessly but despite the high hopes I had for this album I was let down.

On the plus side the original album release (Which I still have) does have a detailed inset on each of the band members which is , unintentionally, very funny and sort of presages Spinal Tap. See the sections on Lee Kerslake and Mick Box. I will say this. Gary Thain is a great bass player if not a bit busy at times but certainly no more so than Chris Squire yet with more soul and R&B influence. So you do have that going for you should you wish to investigate this.

4 out of 5 stars Heep's best live offering.......2005-02-27

I have to start by saying I'm a BIG early Heep fan. Up until High and Mighty I thought they could do no wrong. They are often said to be a poor man's Deep Purple. Maybe. But Heep was much more diversified than Purple. They both had the same lineup: guitar, bass, keyboard, drummer, and singer. However, Heep had 2 lead singers, background harmony vocals, and Hensley doubled on keyboards and guitar.

Now, about this live album. In my opinion, Uriah Heep never really transferred from studio to live very well. Often times, the guitar is mixed down to the point of sometimes being difficult to hear. And the background harmonies were sometimes out of tune, and the harmonies is one of the characteristics of UH that set them apart from alot of other bands. With that being said, this is still the best live album I've heard Heep put out. All the classics are here, even though most of them don't sound much at all like the studio versions. That's not necessarily bad. They do have an intensity and 'feel' to them that gives the impression that they are having a hoot performing them. I've seen this particular lineup in concert 2 times and they were good. But,personally, I prefer a live version of a song to be very similar to the studio version but with Heep you don't get that. Specifically, the guitar solo in the studio version of Look at Yourself is 40 seconds of wah-wah pedalling that will send chills down your spine. The live version is kind of watered down. Also, the intro to LAY sounds like they are leading in to Easy Living. It fools me every time.

Overall, a nice live album. 5 stars for song selection and a 4 for their performances.

Sometimes the first is the best. Lady in Black is one of the best rock songs of all times. Uriah Heep has it's own unique slot in rock history. I got the LP shortly after it's release and a copy of it has been a staple in my collection ever since. Buy this CD!!

classic rockers and younger listeners should enjoy this second effort from the under-rated unapprecitaed uriah heep. i actually bought this to replace my vinyl copy and wasn't dissapointed. memorable songs that stand up to time. "high priestess", "lady in black", simon the bullet freak". a very strong recording that utilized early stereo effects and over-dubbing. (remember it was 1971.) over-the-top vocal arrangements makes it work. title track is a simply "brilliant"! totally wicked! ahead of their time. buy the expanded version. queen and the darkeness owe a lot to these guys.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of 20 Years.......2003-10-25

Made in UK in 2003, Serial# SANDD-189, Playing Time 158:02

I usually despise releases like this... I've seen (and purchased) so many best of, anthology, collections, millennium, very best compilations that keep deceiving me, either because of track selection, but more generally because record labels still think that putting more than 40 minutes of music on those will hinder sales of their back catalogue, that I wasn't really looking forward to this "Ultimate Collection".

And URIAH HEEP already have dozens of retrospectives, so why would anyone pick up this one? Well, here's why:

1) This 2CD-set contains 34 tracks, with 158 minutes of music (those discs are packed!!!);
2) the remastering job is fabulous;
3) the tracks are presented chronologically;
4) all tracks are full-length versions (NO edits!!!)
5) you get all facets of the band, from the heavy "Gypsy" to the soft "Come Away Melinda", the kaleidoscopic "Magician's Birthday", the haunting "Wonderworld", the anthemic "Easy Livin'", the hair-raising "Blood Red Roses", and then some (actually, 28 more!!!)

And no, I'm not a member of the band or an unconditional fan...

This anthology covers the first 20 years of their recordings (1971-1991), and it's not focused only on "commercial" or radio-friendly material (ever heard the full length version of "July Morning" on the radio?).

To the novice, this set is THE best place to start without spending a fortune; to the initiated, over 2 and a half hours of cherished material covering a wide spectrum of genres so loved by many Heepsters.

I just HAVE to play it again...

The missing link between Deep Purple and Queen, '70s Britrockers Uriah Heep had it all: epic rock anthems, quasi-operatic vocals, and gothic ax 'n' organ grooves that could send Quasimodo into paroxysms of air guitar. This 30-song collection mixes infectious frat-rockers such as "Easy Livin'" and "Sweet Lorraine" with attenuated anthems featuring more demons and wizards than you can shake a scepter at ("Magician's Birthday," "Rainbow Demon," "High Priestess," "The Wizard," "Paradise/The Spell" ... you get the idea). Heavy with just the right amount of histrionics, our Heep could even swing into ballad mode, albeit with mixed results: "Rain," penned by keyboardist Ken Hensley, is surprisingly gorgeous, whereas an early cover of the Weavers' "Come Away Melinda" is a bit overwrought. A band whose reach could exceed their grasp, Uriah Heep was the product of a less cynical and calculated time whose innocence and inspirations are well served by this anthology. --Billy Grenier

5 out of 5 stars The true highlights of the peak years.......2007-05-10

This double CD set has all of the important classics. While I was surprised that it only contained two selections from Sweet Freedom, it has nearly every song from their peak commercial and creative album, Demons and Wizards, plus the song "Why" which was never on an album, but was from this same era. A very good showcase of the David Byron years, which are what most people associate the group and sound with. Having the full 10+ minutes of The Magician's Birthday and the songs in chronological order, along with an insightful booklet, make this the Uriah Heep collection to own short of having all of the complete CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Circle of Hands.......2007-05-03

If you read some of my reviews, you will know where I came from. An asian kid influenced by USAF Radio Station DJs and Local Rock Club catering to US soilders during the Vietnam war in Okinawa, "Japan". During my high school in that island we had a band and Traveler on Time, Easy livin medley and Circle of Hands were alomg the covers we did. This CD was a god send to me where I was able to return to my teen years and how I adored these songs. I had the fortune of seeing Uriah Heep in concert as a opening act for Jetro Tull - with out David Byron. But I still remember how great Ken Hensley was. Master of the Hammond organ. one of my favorite ballad Rain is here too. It's raining outside but it's not unusual but the way that I am feeling comming usual.

Uriah Heep is a band that is both worshiped by some and much maligned by others. They were indeed a unique band with a interesting style back then. Their sound is very 70's for obvious reasons, yet they seem to have been able to expand that sound somewhat with their vision as far as song writing goes. The tunes are all very good and even refreshing some 40 (give or take a few) years later. I just love the sound of those old Hammond organs, nothing sounds like that even with all the new technology today. The texture and good quality tracks that make great Prog rock are all here. It's classic stuff that deserves better treatment by the vast majority of critics.

For the casual Heep fan like myself, it's all the Heep you'll need. Diehard Heep fans probably have most if not all of what this set has to offer, although the liner notes are very cool. I guess in some ways, that alone might be worth picking it up for those who already own their entire cd catalog. It's just an interesting read.

So for those of you looking for a trip back in time by one of musics most misunderstood bands, here you go!

4 out of 5 stars These guys are good.......2006-02-07

I had forgotten how good the Byron era was. This is as good as any enterprising music anywhere anytime, even approaching nearly 40 years later. This overview of the Heep's first era is great value but now that I've remembered how good they were, I'm sort of sorry I haven't investigated some of those early albums instead. What about those critics? "If this band makes it, I'll have to ........." Whatever happened to him? Did he do it? I still haven't heard one song done by any critic.
