5 out of 5 stars the best metal album!!!!.......2007-07-25

this is simply the best metal album ever i would say, yes it has only 5 songs, but every second of each song is a bone crushing, head banging rush of pure metallic adrenaline, to me the best one is six feet under/worms of the earth, it starts with a great instrumental piece led by the magnificent drumm playing of Harden Harrison(the best, quickest, fastest drummer of all time)and then when the vocals kick in it's just pure metal at it's finest.
this is a must have for every metal fan, and so are the other two rigor mortis albums, to my humble opinion, the best thrash/speed metal band of all times, two bad they didn't continue playing but those three albums they made are proof enough that they were the greatest

4 out of 5 stars WARNING!! proceed w/caution.......2006-03-05

beware of no track listings.this is a 25 min.5 song ep.while this does'nt effect my opinion of this product ,it might have propted me to put this one off if i had known.anyway i ordered this after having "vs. earth" for awhile.i was curious about their earlier stuff but it was always hard to find cheap.well i guess they've been reissued cause they're now affordable. "freaks"is a solid effort w/a more serious approach than on "vs. earth".i got the sence (while listening to "vs. earth") that this band was capabal of yeilding great thrash."freaks" confirms my suspicion. trax 3,4 & 5 are instant thrash classics.

5 out of 5 stars Rigor Mortis final album.......2003-05-29

The last album by an intense band. This album showcases their best songwriting and studio production. Sick humor and tongue-in-cheek horror show lyrics make "vs the Earth" real fun to listen to. Mike Scaccia's got to be the fastest guitar player in the genre, and his melodies are seemingly never-ending. A bit more effects on the guitar and vocals than on their previous two albums make for a more polished product. The liner notes include lyrics to better follow along songs about being mummified, suffocated, ripped apart, alien invaded, disgusted by seafood and your local tweeker slut. And as on their other two albums, there is a couple of instrumentals so full of emotion you may forget you're listening to music to dismember by. If you enjoy this, check out Blohole, the band Mike and Casey did after Rigor Mortis called it quits. Also there is a killer one-time Rigor Mortis song called 'foaming at the mouth' on the soundtrack to "the Decline of Western Civ.2", for true Rigor Mortis fans.

4 out of 5 stars I love when this happens!.......2003-05-06

A girl at work brought this in one day and I let her play it on my CD player. I was thinking it was just some Death Metal band I'd rather not care to hear, but I was busy so I didn't mind her playing it. I'm glad to see I was wrong...this was one helluva find! I'm mostly into Punk and Hardcore kinda stuff, and a big fan of Thrash metal, and this seems to have elements of all of those, plus it reminded me of my friend's band here in Denver, so I just had to get it. She burnt me a copy and I can't say I can find anything wrong with this CD! It's funny, yet its got that "we like to destroy everything" edge that metal needs to survive. Definately a thrashin' disc! Its one in a million, and if you can check it out, get it. I love this album already.

5 out of 5 stars An Undiscovered Speed Metal Treasure.......2006-07-21

If you were to bounce the name Rigor Mortis off of any fan of metal, he/she would probably ask u, "who the ---- is Rigor Mortis?"

This cd is a classic. A true UNDISCOVERED classic, hence the complete independent release on cd (finally!).

Mike Scaccia's guitar playing is unparallelled. Not only is his style fast, but it is concise and melodic (i.e. "Demons", "Wizard of Gore").

Bruce Corbitt's vocals, though not drylung, still present an angry and demented character. It's like watching a cool horror movie (specifically, the ORIGINAL Texas Chainsaw Massacre comes to mind).

Casey Orr's bass fills in and compliments Mike Scaccia's guitar, throughout this offering. Orr also shares vocals (i.e. "Die In Pain"), and delivers the same impact as Corbitt.

And what would Rigor Mortis be without the pounding rhythm of Harden Harrison? Frankly, I would place Harrison on the list of great drummers such as Dave Lombardo (SLAYER), Charlie Benante (ANTHRAX), and John Bonham (LED ZEPPELIN). He's that intense.

This cd is a must for anybody that still enjoys the speed metal genre. It's not "satanic" by any means. It is a lost classic that made speed metal fun. It's like watching a classic, campy, horror flick: entertaining, but not so serious, as to be boring and pretentious.

..So uncork that beer/soda, throw this cd in your drive, and enjoy..

5 out of 5 stars Hit the speakers and break out the stiffness, bro!.......2006-01-20

Brrrrraaaagggghhllrrrg!!! finally I got hold of one of the finest metal albums of the late 80's of last century. I bought it all those years ago on a rainy day together with Repulsion's "Horrified" and was thrilled beyond any earthly belief. Common sence died that day.
Over the years Repulsion has become more known and is mentionned in one vile breath together with the classic grind acts Napalm Death and Carcass. Rigor Mortis however disappeared into the backyards and dark alleys of doomed "curiossity metal". And it is now, finaly, that some one had the bashed-in brains and ripped-out guts to put this dark, gargling record on The Holy Silver Disc.

Rigor Mortis presents on this self-named debut a fine range of disturbing tales of mayhem, slaughter, decapitation and gruwesome deaths. But the style is intriguing, sometimes even lyrical and above all theatrical, almost cartoonesque, and that puts Rigor Mortis (just as, for instance, that other insane crazy metal act OLD a.k.a. Old Lady Drivers) above most deathcore groups who lack any kind of self mockery and take themselves to seriously.

Enriched with samples from celebrated horrormovies like the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" flicks and the even so graphic-novel-like "Re-animator", this album is a treat for all mentally disordered metal fans, B-movie serial killer impersonators, and other slow-death-enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars RIGOR MORTIS!!! THE GORE KINGS..........2005-09-11

This is a very early entry in the GORE hall of fame!!

These guys were singing about MURDER long before hordes of DEATH grunters deicded too..this is a very influential band/album..I mean EXHUMED and all them bands love these guys!!Along with REPULSION and BLOOD FEAST.,POST MORTEM(U.S. BAND ,YOU POSER) you have the early GORE style!

The music is so good its almost funny too..the vokills are great and you can hear every nasty bit sung to DEATH!!

This an all time great and if you never even heard of this band yet(meaning your near 20 or over 20..) YOUR GAY!!

''WHOS LAUGHING NOW YOU WH*RE..''-BODILY DISMEMBERMENT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Gore.......2005-06-24

I bought this on cassette when it first came out in the late '80's. After years of collecting dust, I pulled it out and of course it broke immediately. Just got the cd version, and man am I glad I did. Rigor Mortis was one of the best Thrash-Gore bands back in the day, and their music still shreds today. There is not a single song on here that doesn't deserve to be cranked up, and the extra songs (especially Foaming at the Mouth) are a welcome addition. Definitely a must-have for any thrash fan, old or new.

4 out of 5 stars Good Old School Thrash.......2004-12-24

I like to base bands like this on the vocals being different from other bands, and this album fits that ticket. It's a low growl while not sounding too low and fake and it's recognizable.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Is Dead... Long Live Rock.......2007-05-28

Rigor Mortis Sets In has some totally funny and politically incorrect today songs.
The songs were politically incorrect back then come to think of it, but Who Cares!

1. Gimme That Rock `N' Roll - very average
2. Mr. Bass Man - Appropriate but I find it slightly annoying to listen to.
3. Do The Dangle - A song about suicide by hanging done as a dance song. Really good.
4. Hound Dog - The Elvis song. No improvement over the King's version.
5. Made In Japan - Another great song about infidelity.
6. My Wife - This song was on Who's Next. This is a different version. Who's Next version was slightly better.
7. Roller Skate Kate - A tragedy song done in the fifties style, funny.
8. Peg Leg Peggy - Another fifties style song totally over the top. Hilarious.
9. Lucille - Another fifties type song.
10. Big Black Cadillac - Pretty cool song of a guy stuck between the cops and the mob.

Before Entwistle Came Along as a Member of the Who, Bassists Seldom Stood Out for their Playing and Few Casual Listeners Knew Or Cared What Purpose the Four-stringed Instrument Served - after He Came Along, Everyone Knew. As a Songwriter, He Wasn't Nearly as Prolific as Townshend, but from "Boris the Spider" and "Whiskey Man" to "my Wife," Entwistle Had a Knack for Capturing Dark Humor that Lightened Up Every who Album, and Even Managed to Contribute a Couple of Songs to Tommy. His Next Album, "Whistle Rhymes" (1972), was Released the Same Week as Pete Townshend's who Came First, and Nine Months Later, Entwistle's Third Solo Album, "Rigor Mortis Sets In" (1973), was Released.

4 out of 5 stars Probably the best retro rock 'n' roll lp from the 70's .......2006-12-21

This is not the kind of lp you would play over and over for months, but you could plop it down 20 years later and still love it, like I have. That this lp came out when it did - at the height of the Who's touring with excruciating sound levels and in the post-Who's Next popularity explosion - is an interesting aspect. 50's Rock n Roll nostalgia was popping up all over, from Keith Moon's favorites ShaNaNa, the Beatles veering into the same territory during the Get Back period, Led Zep throwing Elvis and Ricky Nelson tunes into their shows, and though John Lennon's Rock N Roll Lp a bit after. Entwistle did them all better, and did it his way. He opens with the rip-roaring demand to Gimme That Rock N Roll, and there is no doubt about what it is he wants. And he wasn't getting it from arena-rock and a festering hippie culture. The jacket - featuring the gravesite and coffin of Rock N Roll (proclaiming it didn't really die, just faded away) tells the story to anyone who was paying attention. Modern 70s Rock, which he was making a fabulous living at, was devoid of all the fun that drew him into it 20 years before.

My Wife and Made In Japan are bookends for this dose of nostalgic Rock n Roll. They are a pair of great tunes and stand out as the only two that are Rock without the Roll, and to that end they fit in production-wise but not in the vibe of the disc. The tunes reflect his dark sense of humor and above all his reverence. He concocts solid doo-wop-ish tunes with lyrics that are downright warped without trashing the form, especially Roller Skate Kate, a classic dead girlfriend tune in the vein of Teen Angel, Tell Laura I Love Her, or Last Kiss. Peg Leg Peggy is a rocking tune, but the lyrics are about the dance stylings of an amputee. As arguably the planets baddest bass player, he tackles the 50s novelty rocker Mr Bassman. He could have ruined the song with a send-up that went overboard or twisted rearranging, but he does it his way which was not too far off the original. But of course that was sung by a girl originally, which he didn't try to send up. Elvis and Little Richard covers were mandatory, and he rips into them with an energy he didn't put on vinyl too often. He is true to the fun of 50s rock but not into a sound-alike vibe, which Keith Moon played around with.

There are a few 50s rock discs by 60s and 70s rock stars who wanted to pay tribute to the oldies, or run away from what was happening musically. This one is maybe the best of them, and a fascinating piece of Entwistle's (and the Who's) work. Great for anyone who wants to understand where the music came from. A great part of his early 70's trilogy, and a lot better than some of the stuff they would crank out a few years later.

2 out of 5 stars 'The Ox' sticks his hoof in his mouth.......2005-03-08

After I listened to Entwistle's first solo album, "Smash Your Head Against the Wall," I realised it was a lost gem, and I thought that someone who made an album that great couldn't possibly make something as bad as the critics claimed it was--which goes to show that the critics aren't always wrong. The only worthwhile cuts are a remake of "My Wife" and "Made in Japan." Everything else is lackluster, '50s-style covers or corny, derivative originals, devoid of the black humour you'd expect from a guy who made a classic song out of squishing a spider.

I hoped for send-ups of old tragedy songs (think of those moldy oldies that are begging to be made fun of, like "Teen Angel" or "Last Kiss" or "Leader of the Pack"); the closest it gets is "Peg Leg Peggy" and "Roller-Skate Kate", but there's not enough weirdness or catchiness to make it interesting. There's no hooks that make you want to dig for the humor, and the music itself sounds like half-hearted '50s pop and rock: think "Rock Around the Clock", except that it gets bored and tired with itself at about six o'clock. The originals fare better than the covers, but that doesn't mean much.

It's not out-and-out bad, but it feels an idea with wasted promise. Minus a remake of his contribution to the Who's classic 'Who's Next' and one and a half decent new tracks, there's not much to get into here. Stick with 'Smash Your Head Against the Wall' and 'Whistle Rymes.'

        4 out of 5 stars 50 s' Rock & Roll from Who Bassist ........2001-03-04

John Entwistle s' 1973 follow up album to his best one "Whistle Rymes" is a great Rock & Roll album and in addition to "My Wife", contains a song that could have been a smash hit for him: "Made in Japan". If you have a group and are lookin for a great song to cover, "Made in Japan", coulbe be a great hit for you. "Peg Leg Peggy" is another one to cover. If you are a fan his best solo are this one "Whistle Rymes" and his recent "Life for Dead". Hi also plays in another "lost" cd with Keith Moon, Kenny Jones and Alice Cooper among others "Flash Fearless and the Zorg Women".
