Album Description

The content of "Rain Of A Thousand Flames" prepares the way for the fourth and last part of the 'Emerald Sword saga' which will be released in early 2002. Worth a special mention is the fact that Rhapsody have never before integrated the sounds of their native tongue, Italian, into the songs. “The beautiful sound of Italian really suits this kind of music and apart from that, we could of course express our feelings better in our native language,” Turilli explains and promised that the band will be setting off on an extensive European tour in spring 2002. Besides the regular CD version, "Rain Of A Thousand Flames" is also available as a limited digipak including an MPEG video of the title track, as well as a picture LP with poster.

5 out of 5 stars Constant, in-your-face energy!!.......2006-06-10

This Album starts out very atypically from all the other Rhapsody albums. Instead of the normal "Intro track", This CD gets right into the action with "Rain of A Thousand Flames" which has some amazing enery and amazing guitar in it.

Then there is a rather fitting transition into Queen of The Dark Horizons, Rhapsody's second best song in my opinion.

Then Tears of a Dying Angel is a very atmospheric song, which has quite a bit of Narroration, and a great energetic tune. I actually think the voice acting is great in this song- don't listen to those other reviewers- It's very entertaining. Don't be dissin' Sir Jay Lanslord.

Elnor's Magic Valley is rather pointless in the scheme of things, and just seems like a filler to put this over 41 minutes.

The Poem's evil page returns to the energy of previous songs, with a memorable guitar solo about a minute in.

The Wizard's Last Rhymes is an amazing song, but 2 to 3 minutes of it is taken DIRECTLY from New World Symphony by Dvorak. On the other hand, without this song, I would not have discovered the Symphony, which is a GREAT symphony. (The main melody if Queen of the Dark Horizons is also taken from something, although I don't think there is anything taken DIRECTLY from it.)

The CD goes out as atypically as it came in- I'll let you find out for yourself. :-)

Overall it is a great buy, and ALWAYS fun to listen to. It is second only to Symphony of Enchanted Lands 2.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, definitely cheesy, but can any of you do better?.......2004-04-19

I do agree that Rhapsody should hire someone else to do the narration--perhaps someone like Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden or Russell Allen from Symphony X (just listen to Russell's narration at the beginning of "King of Terror" on The Odyssey album).

By the way, Christopher Lee, The Lord of the Ring's Saruman, will be doing narration on the forthcoming mini-album, "The Dark Secret" (May 24th), as well as the full length album due to be released in September, '04.

But come on, no one can claim these guys to be less than adequate musicians and actually back it up with solid info. But I suppose it's all personal opinion . . . so why even argue about it? Basically, if you like this type of music, then you'll enjoy this album--

which by the way, is not intended to be a full length album (so there's no cause for complaint there)!!!

Also, let's please not criticise bands for labels placed on them by other entities, or for that matter, even the labels they give themselves! Just listen to the music as it is, and enjoy the beauty of it. Music is a personal endeavour, so everyone is going to view it in a personal way. Who are we to judge another's view on music, especially when it's the artist's own point of view!?!

Bottom line, if you enjoy Rhapsody's other work, then buy this album. It is full of their usual powerful content, id est, beautiful vocals, tight musicianship, and though at times cheesy, Luca Turilli's on going saga of the struggle between good & evil entities of his fantasy world. The masterpiece on this album is "Queen of the Dark Horizons" (more than 13 minutes). Also to be praised is "The Wizard's Last Rhymes" (more than 10 minutes), full of epic flavor and even a solo from Lotta. "Elnor's Magic Valley" is a brief yet beautiful journey into the sounds of a Medieval village, reminiscent of "Forest of Unicorns" from the band's first album. And it all begins with the high-energy "Rain of A Thousand Flames" to pump you up for the coming onslaught of music.

To really appreciate this band,it help's to really like Mid career Helloween first, because they are a big time inspiration to not only this band, but to many, many other european Power metal band's.I also think that it would be wise to listen to the slower more well known, but in absolutely no way superior band,Iron Maiden, because for one thing I'm trying to figure out why some people don't like Rhapsody as much as Blind Guardian, and I think it's because they didn't first start out by listening to Mid career Helloween,or Iron Maiden.Although I will agree with those people on one thing that pretains to Rhapsody, and that's that Rhapsody needs to try a more Blind Guardian aproach to narrating,or maybe just cut it out entirely.Still, some bad narration is hardly worth condeming this album,or any of their other ones for that matter.

So whether or not it be Blind Guardians so called Majestic metal,or Rhapsody's so called Hollywood Metal,or even the clearly overated Symphony X's "symphonic, progressive, jazz metal,"or whatever they call it,that there fans say is supposed to be so much better than Power metal. Is all together to me atleast a big oh load of crap.Because there really all just Fantasy Power Metal. And to say one is not power metal like Blind Guardian or Symphony X is a huge laugh, because Blind Guardian started out like the band Galloglass,as a big Kai Hansen style Helloween copy, and still has song's in a few of their newer album's that show that side of them,(I know this because I own pretty much all of there album's).And Symphony X has atleast two or three fast power metal song's per album. So how can they be better than something they actually are.And Rhapsody chose to sound vocally alot like the Legendary Michael Kiske, who also did vocals for Helloween.A vocalist that still to this day get's copied, and idolized more than any other Power Metal singer,in my oppinion. With Legions of well deserved imitator's.So I definately reccommend this album for just any old Fantasy Power Metal fan...

I love the music but this is just too cheesy even for the me, & I enjoy the whole concept of fantasy metal (Blind Guardian's ("Nightfall in Middle Earth" is one of my favorites). The band is obviously talented, but the only tolerable vocals were the ones in Italian. When they sang (or worse, spoke) in English I could understand how stupid the lyrics were. These guys should concentrate on instrumentals. They would be more enjoyable. Fantasy metal walks a fine line between the artfully fanciful & the absurd, & these guys pole-vaulted over it. I probably won't listen to this disc much, in spite of the great music. I certainly won't buy anything else by them.

(If you go d/l the video be aware that it does have a few brief shows of a topless girl, so if you are offended by nudity then you may be better off with just the song/cd.)

3 out of 5 stars Mostly recommended for fans only.......2002-04-07

The fourth album by one of the most popular metal bands on the planet today. This album is not part of the Emerald Sword saga that has been ongoing in the 3 previous albums and will conclude in the next one. Being an album apart from their others, Rhapsody took this opportunity to experiment a little, resulting in very varied styles of songs. Among the 7 tracks on this album you have 2 that are +10 minutes epic hymns, while 2 others are instrumentals under 2 minutes long. The title track unleashes with a blast of speed and energy, while the song "Tears Of A Dying Angel" is somewhat of apocalyptic-feeling, with latin chants and heavy narration. The highlights of this cd would be "Elnor's Magic Valley", a quite fun violin and flutes piece that has a definite "medieval party" feel to it, but unfortunately a too short track; and "Queen of the Dark Horizons", which has all the epic greatness you can expect from a 13 minutes track by an european power metal band.

The overall result would be something perhaps too complex or bizarre for just anyone to apreciate. If you're already a fan of Rhapsody, then you most probably alredy own this album. If you're not, I don't think you'll get into this album. But if you don't know Rhapsody I URGE you to check out "Symphony Of Enchanted Lands", their second album wich is an absolute masterpiece, a classic, a gift sent from heaven... I'm still to find someone (metal fan or not!) who didn't like it when I gave them a listen of it.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best symphonic metal around.......2002-02-22
