Metal Church - Keeping their balance.......2005-04-30
Many people claim that Metal Church isn't as good when they have a different vocalist to David Wayne (vocalist on first two albums 'Metal Church' and 'The Dark'). I definitely agree with this, but what I don't agree with is the same people saying that Metal Church suck without David Wayne.
This isn't true at all. 'Hanging in the balance' is the only Metal Church album I have without David Wayne as the vocalist (I'm English, so I have to order up in HMV or Virgin and wait about 6 months before actually getting the Metal Church album I'm after). 'Hanging in the Balance' and 'Metal Church Live' were in a double-disk package that was actually in the shop so I took advantage of the situation and bought the package.
So anyway, 'H.I.T.B' offers melodic rhythms from songs like 'Waiting for a Saviour', 'End of the Age' and 'Lovers and Madmen'.
Songs like 'Conducter', 'Down to the River' and 'Little Boy' pack lots of heaviness and even 80s thrash material.
If you're a fan of the first two Metal Church albums don't give it a miss just because it has Mike Howe instead of David Wayne.
Sure, it isn't as good as 'Metal Church' or 'The Dark' but it is a great album.

Wow, nostalgia!! I miss the bay area thrash movement so bad. I have been a Metal Church fan from their beginnings. They have consistently put out good albums, and this one is no exception. Actually, I remember when I first picked this up in say, 94' or so. I listened to it one time, and then shelved it. What a mistake. I could have enjoyed it earlier than I did. The thing is, I popped it in, expecting to hear "Blessing....." or "Human Factor" and this just 'aint it. I got it back out a year later, due to the lack of any real, modern music coming out, and gave it another spin, and a few more listens. I'm glad I did. This is good in it's own way, just different. Really, the more you hear it, the more you become addicted to it. Just good, old fashioned, no frills, metal. Well worth the bucks.
One of Their Best.......2001-06-30
On this album Metal Church did something almost impossible. They made an album equal to their debut and "Blessing In Disguise" This album was easily their most varied and revealed a new and powerful side to the band.
The album opens with "Gods of Second Chance" and features a guitar solo from fellow Seattle rocker and Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell. From there it just gets stronger. "Hypnotized" is an intense song about a vampire highlighted by Mike Howe's incredible vocal effort on this song. The strongest and most powerful tune is "Waiting For A Savior" vividly revealing the ultimate fate of all humankind: old age.
The opening bass intro for "Little Boy" sets the stage for a political commentary on the overused topic of war but is a powerful tune nonetheless. The album concludes with "Subtle War" which features an awesome harmonized riff for the intro and chorus. The most surprising track is "End Of The Age" a great mix of acoustic and electric guitar complemented by sing-along verses and chorus. This song alone makes the album worth while.
While a bit different from older Metal Church material this album makes a statement for the band's musicianship and should be purchased at your earliest convenience.

"Hanging In The Balance"....One Of The Best !!!.......2003-08-09
I find this Metal Church release simply fabulous. It's very solid all the way through, and it's heavy as hell. I think this is one of their best releases to date. I think it's better than "Blessing In Disguise", and that was a very solid release IMO.
The "Live" CD even makes it better. You can't miss with this one. It's got everything you'd want from Metal Church, and "Hanging In The Balance" is one excellent piece of work. They really worked hard on this one, and you can tell by the way it hits you straight between the eyes with the opening track "Gods Of Second Chance"....
If you liked "Blessing", you should love "Hanging". It's heavier, and it has better direction. The songs are well written, and the musicianship is near flawless. I was truly unaware of this realease when I bought it, and didn't know what to expect. Today, I think it's one of their best releases ever.
It certainly deserves five stars....
UP THE IRONS!!!
The Best Metal Church CD To Date.......2002-10-31
This double CD is the best Metal Church CD to date. Metal Church is the best band around in my eyes, but this CD is just awesome. It has one of their best CDs, Hanging In The Balance. The only Metal Church CD that can be seen as better than Hanging is The out of print CD The Human Factor. The best CD ever. This Hanging In The Balance:Live CD is the best, because it takes two great CDS into one. Hanging has all the great songs that all Metal Church fans love. And the Live CD has songs from both The Dark and Metal Church. A CD you must have if you love Metal Church as much as I do.

Virtuosic performances.......2000-08-29
"Over the Edge" is a collection of short works by American composer, Eric Chasalow, mostly for virtuoso soloists and tape, but also includes a recording of his First String Quartet for good measure. In some works, Chasalow's tape part acs as an accompaniment to the live performer; in others the various live and processed voices mix to produce a seemingly new, single, hybrid instrument. The resulting sonic ambiguity imbues Chasalow's music with a mysterious quality: making it hard to tell just how many musical voices are present.
This 'phantom dimension', as Mike Silverton calls it in the sleeve notes to the CD, is not confined solely to the works for acoustic and electronic combination. It takes very careful listening indeed to accept that 'Winding Up' (1989) really is a piece for 'pure' solo horn. Originally intended as an encore piece, this virtuosic showpiece works every bit as well as an opener to the CD. The work receives a stunning performance here from its dedicatee, Bruno Schneider.
On this disc, 'Hanging in the Balance' (1983) for tape and cello, 'Fast Forward' (1988) for tape and percussion, as well as the CD's title work, 'Over the Edge' (1986) for tape and flute, all explore Chasalow's phantom dimension through a tape part that utilises sounds derived from or related to those of the live instrument. But there are also times when the electronic component provides a contrasting element within Chasalow's works. In 'The Furies' - four song settings from Anne Sexton's collection of fairly grim poems, "The Death Notebooks" - the tape part sometimes brings a light-hearted or whimsical commentary to the soprano's sardonic and angst-ridden words. The effect points up the poet's rather bleak imagery in a very unsettling manner. Chasalow revisited Anne Sexton's poetry for 'The Fury of Rainstorms' (1992). Here the voice of soprano Christine Schadeberg is subjected to digital manipulation to produce a tape-only piece in which intelligible words emerge only briefly from the electronic textures. The work remains every bit as discomforting as the earlier "Fury" settings.
The final work, the 'First String Quartet', concerns itself with much larger forms than the rest of the CD and, to my mind at least, makes an uncomfortable bed-fellow to the other works. Nevertheless, this disc remains an important document for those wishing to explore the less frequented by-ways of late 20th century American art music.

one of the most overlooked metal albums.......2004-03-14
Hanging in the Balance, has got to be one of the best metal albums to come out in the 90's. Metal Church reached a new level of musical ability with this album. The guitar, vocals, and rythems is technically amazing, but you don't feel like there is no soul in the music. The whole album is driven, and powerful.
