5 out of 5 stars what a surprise!.......2007-06-26

At first, I was a little bit suspicious when buying this album, but what a surprise did I get!

DOG EAT DOG ended up being one of my favorite Joni Mitchell CD's. Although it does sound a bit old-fashioned, thanks to the heavy 80's pop/rock/dance production. Anyways, each song is really inspiring. The album takes you through an amazing journey of rage and pain - Hunger in Ethiopia, the lies of televangelists, the ridiculous faith in capitalism and materialism and the stupidity of politicians!!

VERY SMART, VERY POSTMODERN ACTUALLY!

FAVE TRACKS: Dog Eat Dog, Good Friends, Fiction and Ethiopia!

Don't hesitate!! Both, the lyrics and the music are wonderful!

4 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics, Passionate Music.......2007-05-26

Ok, so it was 1985. I believe the studios at that time mandated that each song released that year had to feature electronic drums and cheesy synth lines. If you don't believe me, listen to ZZ Top or Rush or even the Kinks from this time period.

That said, this record really holds up, and is a perfect soundtrack to our depressing modern times. Although I love everything about Joni, I do believe she outdid herself on the lyrics. Runaway preachers foisting their constricted vision of morality on us, pointless and deadly wars, famine in Africa, unbridled greed and consumerism, the masses drugged by "the three great stimulants." And that's just the first song!

Also, once you get used to Thomas Dolby's production, the songs are catchy and addicting -- I love "Good Friends," with Michael McDonald, or "Shiny Toys," with Don Henley and James Taylor providing the backing vocals.

And isn't Rod Steiger's Falwell/Swaggert/James Dobson preacher, screeching in the background about America's downfall and immorality, simply classic? I thought I had turned on Fox News by accident.

At this price Dog Eat Dog packs a lot of highly charged musical value for the money. It's definitely worth revisiting given the state of the world today.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Shoot the Messanger! .......2007-03-11

By 1985, Joni Mitchell had already suffered considerable grief for her musical experiments. Brilliant works were thrown into the bin of obscurity, observations predating urgent significance. At this stage, "Dog Eat Dog" is number one on the list.

The craft is somewhat affected toward the negative, preventing this from being a five star album. However, these studio techiniques were foisted upon Joni by Thomas Dolby and then husband Larry Klien. These two were tragically dedicated to current fads. The lyrics make this bearable.

What a prophet! Within two years all the televangelists came tumbling down, Iran Contra revealed the cracks in the Reagan administration, materialism gave way to the antithesis, grunge. Mitchell is always persecuted for having the crystal ball with images of our own creation. "Good Friends", the opening song, is contemporary and sweet. No complaints. " Lucky Girl", the closer, is a grateful tune, again, leaves a pleasant taste. The collection between the bookends details the excess of the 80's. It isn't pretty. The truth is it wasn't pretty. Why beautify ugly truths?

The public wasn't ready for such a clear mirror. With the reflection now in the rear view mirror, " Dog Eat Dog" needs a second hearing in the court of critic/public opinion. The relevance can no longer be ignored.

5 out of 5 stars On Fire.......2007-03-01

I think this is one of Joni's best albums. Great lyrics, catchy phrases, biting social and political commentary and finger pointing at her finest. Plus good music! I applaud her!

5 out of 5 stars An honest & ambitious work........2005-11-14

1985's "Dog Eat Dog" is a powerful record consisting of mainly all protest songs with the exception of it's riff driven opener "Good Friends" & it's wonderfully jazz tinged closer "Lucky Girl." But everything inbetween is Joni's social wrath. Fearlessly touching on subjects such as the corrupt government, the rotting soul of the music industry, lawyers & corporate facists taking over, rasism, greed, poverty, the diluted & ignorant media. All handled with great intellegence in true Joni fashion. On the melodic title track, she declares:

"Land of snap decisions
Land of short attention spans
Nothing is savored
Long enough to really understand
In every culture in decline
The watchful ones among the slaves
Know all that is genuine will be
Scorned and conned and cast away."

Intelligent & thought provoking, evocative & unapollogetic. "Dog Eat Dog" is another unique chapter of brilliance in Joni's collection.

The New York band's first CD,never knew much about Dog Eat Dog until I heard this disc. They fuse rap and metal together,as it seems to work here okay. The two key musicians are Dave Neabore-bass&vocals and Sean Kilkenny-guitar as they change line-ups so often so I couldn't tell you who else played on this CD.Tunes I thought were decent were "Pull My Finger","Who's The King?","Strip Song" and "...In The Doghouse".Check it out.

I say them live in 94 in Pittsburgh with Downset and Biohazard and Again a couple years later. Awesome live show. They even hung out with us after their set. Real cool guys.I love this Band! It's too bad they never got that big. They fell of a little with their Play Games release. The heavy grooves seemed to go away with that one as they switched some band members. This one is GREAT though.
ABK stood the test of time.

I saw DED in Geneva Switzerland as they opened for the Cure and they just blew the audience and other acts away with thier power-funk rock. The kids were bananas as they ripped into the classics. These guys should be huge in the USA. I know it will happen and then we will all know who are the Kings!! The CD is KRunching@!!!

          5 out of 5 stars outstanding music.......2002-07-26

This cd rocks...this band is unbelievable. They have other cd's available but imports only. I have also discovered that 3 of original members of Dog Eat Dog have formed a new band called ABK. (all boro kings) I have heard samples of it and it is absolutely unbelievable...I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Ahead Of Its Time.......2002-12-17

Back in 96' when I couldn't get enough of rap-metal bands like 311 and Rage Against The
Machine I came across Dog Eat Dog on the Internet. I sampled them and gave it a thumbs up.
Plus I read that they got band of the year in Canada. So I bought the CD. It was ...[great], heavy
yet having flow. But they never really caught on commercially, which is a shame because they
were way before Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park or any of the new bands. It could be due to the fact
that they haven't had a new album in 6 years or their label wouldn't stand behind them but they
are good. Play Games is a laid back/punk/rap album, that even features the RZA, while All Boro
Kings is more raw guitar/rap album. Its too bad they never got discovered by a label that
          promoted them better.

4 out of 5 stars Before Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, And Hundreds Of Others..........2002-12-13

With this album, Dog Eat Dog blended rock and rap with great results. Songs like "Rocky" and the incredible "Hi-Lo" are straight ahead melodic rockers, while "Step Right In" teams up with GZA from the Wu-Tang and proves to be almost more rap than rock. Also included on this album is the title track, which is basically a modernized version of Meatloaf's classic "Paradise By The Dashboard Light" ... no mean feat to pull off, but pull it off they do.

The album falters a little on the B side before coming back strong at the end. Overall, though, it has more than enough good music to compensate for this. This album came out before the wave of rock & metal fusion became normal with bands like Limp Bizkit, and sadly, as is the case with most artists that are ahead of their time, the album didn't do too well. Make no mistake: these guys have proved they can rock, and this album shows they can do rap as well. Despite minor flaws, this is a great CD.

3 out of 5 stars Mixture comes up short.......1998-10-22

Dog Eat Dog is able to mix rap and rock, but I was not impressed with this Cd because it had no focus. I am hoping they will come up with some more interesting lyrics on there next album. They might be a great group in the future.

Creative band, and it needs 5 stars because IT'S NOT WARRANT. Warrant was a seventh rate crap band from the late 80's that sang garbage poser junk. Dog Eat Dog were a unique hardcore/rap/horn rooted band... far more interesting than god-awful Warrant!

Don't make the mistake I did and thought this was a release from the hair metal band WARRANT (Cherry Pie, Heaven, Uncle Toms Cabin)

I thought this mightev been a single release or somethign because WARRNAT also have an album called DOG EAT DOG and I thought maybe these where demo tracks that didnt make it onto the album.

But this is a band called Dog Eat Dog and the album is called Warrant.

All Mighty Senators are the country's best-kept secret as far as music that makes you dance. You can't listen to AMS without wanting to shake that booty. Though the live show is the penultimate as far as the music goes, listening to this CD will get you geared up for a night on the town or will allow you to dance around the house, whether you're alone or not!
          GREAT CHOICE!!!

4 out of 5 stars put the toys away, boys.......2003-09-05

Coming off 2000's amazing "Raw Power Live," I expected AMS to finally break the studio spell and make an album that accurately reflects their insane, free-wheeling, booty-shakin live sound.

          Oh well.

Don't get me wrong. This is a pretty good effort, but it sounds too flat and dim to really capture the energy that this band is notorious for.

For all its faults, it's still far better than some ...

5 out of 5 stars Great listen! The Senators do it and do it well.......2003-06-14

The Senators have been mainstays in Baltimore, Md for a over 10 years..and are always fun to go back to. Big Business is more polished then previous releases and just has the the feel and look of a more produced, great sounding album.
Standout songs IMHO are: Soul(rockin and funkin), Giant Steps(funkin), Music is Big Business, Good(this sounds like a theme song to a Saturday morning show OR would sound great as background music as closing credits roll on a movie!), Mother Nature's Afro, Booty Fresh(pretty little ditty)

You can't deny the orginality and the fun they create. The whole album is pretty easy to listen through without having to skip around(a key to great albums in my book.) Not a big fan personally, but cool that there are small appearances by singers of other good Baltimore bands - Kelly Bell Band and Jimmie's Chicken Shack.

My only complaint(and this applies to other groups too) is the need for chorus lyrics to be repeated so often, particularly when they are not always catchy or good.

Also, Landis sure does talk about going downtown a lot!

To sum up, get this album!
