5 out of 5 stars Totally jams!.......2006-05-23

Wore this out on tape, finally broke down and got the CD version. Like many, I didn't hear much of Warlock until "Triumph and Agony" came out. Decided to give the previous release "True as Steel" a try, and glad I did. It has become one of my favorite heavy metal albums, there's not a bad tune on here, Dora's voice is simply amazing and can be put up there with best. But I'd say its the perfect timed guitar work that hooks me. I prefer this release over T and A, it just doesn't let up from opening with Mr. Gold and ending with the instrumental on T.O.L., you won't be dissappointed. One hint though, listen to it LOUD, it begs for it.

4 out of 5 stars Hovers between 4 and 3 stars........2006-05-17

Yep, this album was a change in direction for Warlock. Not a humungous leap - it's not like they started sounding like Rick Astley or some German ankle slapping folk band. But it was a change. Change in musical style to something more melodic and less squared off, less riff dependant, changes to the voice of Doro who was maturing as not just a singer but a more showy, theatrical ring master of proceedings. And changes in hair style too. Gone are the forbidding leather get ups and in with spiky hair and more skin on display from all around.

The year was 1986 and Warlocks True As Steel came slashing out of speakers all over the place with tunes such as;

Mr Gold - somewhat formulaic lyric wise but this set out the new Warlock strategy of more conventional hard rock wattage rather than metal.

Fight For Rock - another cringe inducing set of lyrics but hey, the thing holds together somehow anyway and sure got repeated listens in my car stereo.

Love In the Danger Zone - Doro really seems to have a way with ballads, she's been quoted in Classic Rock magazine as thinking metal bands have the best ballads anyway and who am I to argue. This certainly isn't a bad one.

Speed of Sound - probably the most metal track here, stripped basics and a touch reminiscent of Accept and that is good thing. This tune really races to the finish line.

Midnite in China - A similar track here to the previous one, a little more space in the arrangements though.

Vorwarts, All Right - OK I admit I've no idea what this title means. All I know is that it's an example of how huge, shouted choruses were becoming a part of the Warlock canon.

True As Steel - what can you say. Title track, anthemic stadium rocker par excellence. A staple of the bands career and it's perhaps their most successful track ever.

Lady In A Rock 'n' Roll Hell - slightly lower standard here, but following the former track that was perhaps always going to happen. Not something that got repeated listens on my stereo.

Love Song - Some may love it, others hate it. Listen to the sample and make up your own mind.

Igloo on the Moon (Reckless) - Not that awesome a track. The music was strong but for some reason this track just doesn't grab the listener as much.

T.O.L - another tune where the reader of this review is perhaps better served listening to the sample.

Overall this was a huge coming of age for this band. Depending on my mood this release, with it's more sparkly production, smoother harmonies and melodies and more mainstream approach is a disc that I pass over. Other times it gets thrown on so I can listen to the highlights all over again. I always equate this as the stepping stone to Triumph and Agony, which is where anybody new to this band should start from.

4 out of 5 stars Warlock - 'True As Steel' (Polygram Int'l).......2005-07-21

Originally released in 1986,this was Warlock's third out of four albums.Even though this metal outfit had good songs,a dymanic gorgeous front woman,Doro and a tight band,Warlock never did get their due, like fellow German heavy hitters the Scorpions and Accept.Tracks on this CD reissue that never grow old are "Fight For Rock","Speed Of Sound","Lady In A Rock&Roll Hell" the title cut "True As Steel"(love the video)and "Igloo On The Moon".Simply a great '80's metal classic.Line-up:Doro Pesch-vocals,Peter Szigel&Rudy Graf-guitars,Frank Rittel-bass and Michael Eurich-drums.Should appeal to some fans of Vixen,Loudness,Kix and possibly Lita Ford.

5 out of 5 stars Rightfully "true" as steel from front to back.......2005-02-28

True As Steel(1986). Warlock's third studio album.

At the dawn of the 80s, many heavy metal bands hailed from all over the place in order to make their sound heard. Germany was a great music spot as well as England and the United States. From there came bands like the Scorpions, Accept, and Warlock, all showing the world how heavy metal should be done. The Scorpions had much experience under their belt and ended up being one of the most successful metal bands to date, managing to survive the grunge rock wave of the early 90s. Accept were underrated amongst all the NWOBHM bands, yet they managed to churn out classic album after classic album up until their official break-up sometime in the 90s.

Warlock were a really special case at that time because they were a fully-fledged heavy metal band with a female-fronting vocalist, something that wasn't very common at all, considering how many female fronted bands favored a pop music sheen at the time. Warlock beautifully demonstrated Doro Pesche's unbridled power on both Burning The Witches(1984) and Hellbound(1985), their first and second albums respectively. Backing her up were guitarists Rudy Graf and Peter Szigeti, bassist Frank Rittel, and drummer Michael Eurich, all competent metal musicians in their own right. 1986 saw the band move into slightly more melodic musical landscapes, yet they still retained their edge that previous albums displayed. Although it didn't get as much warm reception as the band wanted it to, TAS may well be Warlock's masterpiece and one of the best albums to come out of the mid 80s (Yes, it's even a little bit better than the follow-up Triumph & Agony(1987) which is still excellent).

I don't know exactly what it is about this album, but I can't remember the last time I repeatedly played a hard-rock album over and over again and not grow tired of it. Seriously, I must've played TAS 10 times in a row on the day I bought it! It's seen countless replays since then and to this day I still do not ever become bored of its hard rocking sensibilities and unique melodic atmosphere. Of course, taken at face value it does sound like a lot of other hard rock coming out at the time, but there's something about TAS that I can't quite pinpoint which separates this one from others. It's very underrated and perhaps one of the most forgotten gems of 1986, but in my eyes it is clearly a masterpiece that all fans of this genre need to hear. It's a real shame that TAS didn't receive a better reception than it did, because I'm sure that if it had seen some exposure in the States, it would be right up there with their successful follow-up album.

TAS is Warlock's lengthiest studio album clocking in at eleven tracks, yet they fly by in no time at all. From the majestic anthems of the title track and the speed metal of 'Speed Of Sound' to the epic feel of 'Midnight In China' and the excellent balladry of 'Love Song', there is plenty of variety to be found here. Although I guess you could say that 'Reckless(Igloo On The Moon)' is the closest thing to filler on the disc, it's still a good song, and I did not find a single weak track in the mix. My absolute favorites are the aforementioned 'Midnight In China' and the title track, plus also the soaring opener 'Mr. Gold' and mid-paced mayhem of 'Fight For Rock'. 'Love In The Danger Zone' is slower and gloomy, whereas 'Vorwarts Alright!' and 'Lady In A Rock And Roll Hell' are more power-steady numbers that would fit well played in a large arena. I believe that 'T.O.L.' is the only instrumental the band has ever done, and it's a fine way to close the album. This release's only downside comes from the fact that Warlock has never been a gold-mine when it comes to lyrics, but when it comes to power arena-metal melody music like this, lyrics don't really matter.

Warlock didn't last very long, but they managed to put out 4 hard-hitting classics in their short time span, with TAS being the best of the bunch. The line-up faltered after this album's extensive touring, replacing Szigeti and Rittel with two American musicians, and relocating to the US where T&A was produced. Once Warlock ended, Doro managed to gain a successful solo career in Germany that's still going strong to this date. Other members like Szigeti and Rittel moved onto former Accept Frontman Udo Dirkshneider's solo band U.D.O., whereas Eurich moved onto the hard rock German band Cassanova.

Replayability: Very High. I'll break this one out from time to time, no matter what mood I'm in.

Overall, it's safe to say that if you like Warlock's other releases you should feel right at home with TAS. In fact, any one who is into the mid-80s hard rock/metal scene should find something to like off of here. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Other Recommendations:
-Any of Warlock's other studio albums (ALL are great)
-'Force Majure' and 'Doro' (both are the closest sounding to the former band Warlock.
-'Defenders Of The Faith' by Judas Priest and 'Rage For Order' by Queensryche (not the same as TAS, but both have a unique feel to them much like TAS does)
-Anything by Lita Ford or Vixen (both female/female fronted hardrock bands)

5 out of 5 stars Warlock's Best Album.......2004-05-13

This album is rock solid! Many people think Triumph and Agony is their best but I don't agree. This album is full of great songs like Mr. Gold, Fight For Rock, Love In The Danger Zone, Lady In A Rock And Roll Hell, and Love Song. The only song I don't really care for is Speed Of Sound. Most fans probably were exposed to Warlock/Doro through Triumph And Agony so this album often gets overlooked. But True As Steel has that classic German melodic metal sound as well as good songs. The guitar riffs crunch and Doro's vocals are full of emotion. Check it out if you don't have it already!

2 out of 5 stars The best? I think not........2004-01-11

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

1 out of 5 stars can't understand the words.......2004-01-08

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good bargain........2004-08-25

The performances are good--this is the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, after all--and you get 2 full CDs, with 2 selections from "Trial by Jury", 5 from "HMS Pinafore", 9 from "The Pirates of Penzance", 9 from "Iolanthe", 12 from "The Mikado", 6 from "The Yeomen of the Guard", and 13 from "The Gondoliers". The booklet is a bit skimpy, and only lists recording dates for the first CD (1929-1949). But the sound is good, and the music is great, and at this price it's a great "greatest hits" collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.
