Better Than The Yellow and Black Attack!!!.......2007-07-11

These versions of these songs are better than the versions that appear on The Yellow and Black Attack! because these are more raw. The sound quality is excellent for demos. "My Love I'll Always Show" is the suprise gem here. I was expecting a melodic version of the song like "You Won't Be Lonely". Instead you get a "in your face" heavy rocker that's way better than the re-make that was turned into a ballad. Buy this! You won't be disappointed!

Stryper-TheRoxx Regime Demos.......2007-07-10

I just got my copy of the Roxx Regime Demos from Stryper. "From Wrong To Right" goes really slow at the beginning, but it Rocks the rest of the way. The best song on the album is the most surprising as well in "My Love I'll Always Show". I have listened to this song the most and it just an awesome song to hear this way. "Loud N' Clear" sounds basically the same, a lot more bass and drum work though. "You Know What To Do" also starts slower and builds. The guitar work is more defined and grinding in this version. There is even some Cowbell going on in "You Won't Be Lonely" (Needs more cowbell). "Co'Mon Rock" has a little differences in emphasis on certain words and the bass and guitar seem more present here. "Tank" is a nice little drum solo from Robert Sweet and really showcases his talent, a welcome addition to the album. "Honestly" even has that trumpet solo that we heard about. Believe me, you guys can hear the little differences in every song.

The inside cover art is some old posters from back in the day when this journey with Stryper started. They played on the same stage with some of the biggest names in Metal back then...or rather, those bands got to play with Stryper! This is a Great album. I am actually very glad I have this. One of the best Stryper releases ever!!!

The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Its a 4 track demo, so the fact that some songs are early versions of things later improved upon isn't much of a surprise. There are a few tracks that are just great and do not appear on later albums (not sure why because they are damn good). So, for a non collector type like me, it was still a worthy purchase.

I don't own this cd I just dowloaded 50FT QUEENIE and I loved that song she sings about her becoming 50 ft of a queen looking over the city I loved that song. I couldn't find a single album so I reviewed it here hope you all don't mind It's one of those songs I can't resist.

If you like "Rid of Me", then buy this CD! Although I like the polish of her final product, these demos really give you insight into her true vocal power. This stuff explodes from DEEP inside her. Uncomfortable at times. Moving.

These days, with everyone knowing everything there is too know about music and the musicians who make it, I have given up on trying to classify anything, or on claiming to know what's good and what's bad anymore. But this record is good. The songs are sincere, well written, and true to self. She really let herself shine and was shameless in releasing and promoting this definitive material. This isn't for everyone, but if you can put your finger on emotion and enjoy artistic expression in music, this one's for you.

Rid of Me demos.......2006-01-09

Personally I'm a fan of Steve Albini's production on Rid of Me. Even though the album didn't quite reach the heights of Dry, which I still consider her best album. Rid of Me was a great record and I really love listening to these demos. I think any fan of hers can appreciate them. The release was a reaction of sorts to critics of Albini's production on Rid of Me and certainly a more raw take on the material. This album is easily worth owning just for "Hardly Wait." It's one of her best songs and this was it's only offical release. The song didn't make it onto Rid of Me, I still don't understand why.

Full Title - The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg. A two-disc set of Flaming Lips recordings from 1989 to 1991, reissues the complete In a Priest Driven Ambulance and adds (in effect) 23 bonus tracks - comprising B-sides (from the singles 'Drug Machine' and 'Unconsciously Screamin') plus a collection of four-track demos often bootlegged as The Mushroom Tapes. Of the extra material, the B-sides are best, especially a pair of covers - one of the Sonics' sullen garage nugget 'Strychnine' and the other of Elvis Costello's '(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.' This is an incredible collection of Lips early stuff. The other companion collection, "Finally The Punk Rockers Are Taking Acid", discs 1-3, are the first recordings by the Flaming Lips, and it is very good. If you are a huge fan of the Flaming Lips like I am, both of these are good to have for historical purposes. The Flaming Lips have a rich history of inventive music and if you just start at The Soft Bulletin, arguably where they are roughly at stylistically, and have the three most recent recordings, that one and Yoshimi, and At War With The Mystics, then wouldn't you be a bit curious as to how they arrived at this point?

I was curious, and I live in the area where they grew up in central Oklahoma, and pretty much ignored them up until about a year ago. Now I have all of their CDs except for one of them.

You should be curious if you consider yourself to be an explorer of artistically viable music. The Flaming lips have obvious influences from the classic/acid-rock era including Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and many others. But this collection reveals how they developed their ideas from a Punk Rock Acid Rock perspective, and, depending on your frame of mind, and how receptive you are to noise/Acid/punk and their newer musical ideas, you should find The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg rewarding--I did.

Disc one includes the "Preist Driven Ambulance" album, which was their last pre-Warner Bros. album, and also their last album without Steven Drozd on the drums. It is looser, and much more guitar driven than their recent recordings, although all the recordings prior to Soft Bulletin are more guitar/noise driven. There are plenty of mind-blowing ideas and many beautiful songs. The bass is more prominent in the mix. The rawness is there but the punk-influenced Acid sound is there and it plays very well. Some of the stand-out songs from disc one are played again as out-takes, different versions and they are on Disc Two, the Mushroom Tapes. This disc took me a few plays to enjoy but I now listen to it more than the others. There are some songs that are beautiful, such as the Stones-influenced Five Stop Mother Superior Rain, with its slide guitar work, harking back to Stones Wild Horses, or Pink Floyd.

Anyway, I won't go into the details. Listen and experience this collection on your own. With an open mind, you'll be richly rewarded.

Give it a second spin.......2006-01-28

Im not going to lie, when i bought this album (blind) I hated it. I felt like I had to like it cause I like the band, but i really didnt like it. But after giving it another try recently, I found that it was about ten times better than I originally thought. After my third time through it, I actually greatly enjoyed it. It can be hard at times, because of their drug induced lyrics and music, but still a credit to Wayne Coynes upbeat and silly styl. So dont be fooled by the 30 second clips, cause this album has more than meets the initail eye.

WOW.......2005-07-15

The first time I listened to this album, it sounded like a bunch of lo fi noise. But once I sat down with a nice pair of head phones and just listened, I was able to appreciate what a mature, gorgeous album this is.

Yes, there is a lot of guitar noise. But the noise is not an end in itself. It is a tool that the Flaming Lips deploy with surgical precision. In this album's best moments, feedback effects laden guitar riffs alternate with periods of unsettling quiet to create a heightened sense of dramatic tension. This tension, which is sustained for most of the album, turns what would otherwise be a bunch of very catchy country and blues inspired melodies into an edgy psychedelic masterpiece.

It may take a few listens to really appreciate what the Lips are doing here; but, in my opinion, the reward is well worth it.

The Flaming Lips get...good? Whoa........2005-01-27

Although it's loaded with demos and outtakes, the main reason you want to own "..Jesus Egg" is for "In a Priest Driven Ambulance". I think the actual album is out of print, so you might as well get it here with the nice packaging and what not.

"Ambulance" is The Flaming Lips' fourth album (released in 1990), and it's a major improvement. The haze of psychedelia, punk, and white noise that made up their previous three albums is still in tact..but now they've injected the music with a heavy dose of pop. In other words, these songs actually have distinguishable melodies and hooks!

"Shine on Sweet Jesus" combines caterwauling guitar feedback and Wayne Coyne's shrill vocals with an irrestiable singalong hook. It's like white noise meets bubblegum pop.

"Unconsciously Screamin" is a glorious psychedelic mess, as are the noisy assaults "God Walks Among Us Now" and "Mountain Side".

There's actually a lot of quieter moments on the album too. "Rainin' Babies" is a really gorgeous ballad; it's like a lo-fi precursor to "The Soft Bulletin". The majestic "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain" is similar fare that also works well.

Other highlights include the thumping bass weirdness of "Take Meta Mars", the trippy "Stand In Line", the unsettling, parking-lot folk of "There You Are" and their cover of "What a Wonderful World" (which surprisingly stays pretty true to the original).

The outtakes are hit or miss. There's some decent stuff on there. And the demos are interesting, but not something you'll probably listen to over and over again. But "In a Priest Driven Ambulance" is a true gem; not only their best early work, but one of their best altogether. And that's why "..Jesus Egg" is an essential purchase.

Hot to Trot for them Flaming Lips.......2004-05-21

To abstain from any superfluous felicitations that would hinder the evident brilliance of this album and to put lucidly my feelings on this particular effort, I shall simply state that In a Priest Driven Ambulance is one of the greatest sonic excursions I have been privy to hear in some time. Given that I was an ardent Lips fan prior to listening, my adoration was perpetuated to the nigh crux of hysteria when attaining a copy of my own. I suppose one could make the rather impotent attempt at actually delineating all the myriad components that make this album an astonishingly addictive substance, but such puerile plying would be immediately reduced to an ashen cinder because this album (as with nearly every other Lips album) evades all proper articulation. The vertiginous furrows of relentless feedback and white noise (that seem to ebb and swoon upon the nubile shoals of your ears), the imperious obfuscation of the Dadaist lyrics (slurred and howled in the most strained and salient pronunciations), the volutary movement of the music (i.e. the way the whole composition seems to impel the listener's volitation - incensing a feeling of flight), and all the innumerable idiosyncrasies make this one of the most impressive records of the 90s (compare this to that apathetic dive bomb dirge of bloated noise and unctuous production known as Nevermind to get my point). An aberrant to the pervasive ennui inspired by their contemporaries, In a Priest Driven Ambulance not only deviated from the prevailing miasma of alternative music by the promulgation of an album that prominently featured antipodean doses of noise terror and acoustic subtlety (the two often managing to coincide like in the wonderful "Five Stop Mother Superior Rain") but also marked an unprecedented turn in the Lips' own catalogue. Their preceding work had been infamous for its layers of feedback and white noise, and even though they still incorporated those elements into the "Priest" album, they had been reluctant to produce anything that dared veer from their course. Though their aptitude for bizarre melody had been brusquely exerted on tracks from Ow My Gawd the Flaming Lips and some parts of the cacophonous feedback symphony of Telepathic Surgery, it is here that the band began to intersperse their sense of musical competency. Restraining from the stentorian deluge of noise that made itself present on Telepathic Surgery, the Flaming Lips opted to create an album that deftly compounded all of those aspects and more - thus making this their first masterpiece (an echelon of which they now can amend with Transmissions From the Satellite Heart, The Clouds Taste Metallic, and the orchestral genius of the Soft Bulletin). But commending the album with such adulation is irreparably futile. I cannot put into words (nor would I try) the overwhelming sense of appeasement that fills every pore of my being when I hear the Lips' sardonic cover of "What a Wonderful World" or the obtuse hilarity (I sense I'm missing the joke) of "Shine on Sweet Jesus." Given the fact that they supported bands like the Butthole Surfers and Sonic Youth (neither of whom have come close to approaching this summit of plangent perfection), it is somewhat surprising to note the psychedelic pop they have chosen to adopt (though that in no way denigrates their eminence). But the result from their predilection of musical evolution is a strong track record that has currently failed to disappoint me (unlike the aforementioned Buttholes). Someone recently inquired as to the sound of the Flaming Lips, to what bands were they consanguineous. I had no answer, try as I did, all of my syllables dissipated and dissolved into indecipherable prate. To adequately describe this music for someone who has never heard it is a formidable challenge. All I can say is that I love the Flaming Lips, and even though some may be disconcerted by their bumptious conviviality, I can only retort that you have to give reverence to a band that can form a lyric like "I was born the day they shot a hole in the Jesus egg/ I was born the day they shot John Lennon's brain/ The way you look at me sucks me down the sidewalk."

Raw early material........2007-07-26

This is early DAC with a real bare flavour compared to his later studio work. It works though as it's rich in sound and his songwriting is as strong as it ever was. This mostly acoustic based material is a treat for long-time fans. The dvd is only about 10 minutes long showing a young DAC wondering around basically introducing himself while explaining where he came from. It's an interesting side-note but nothing more. Overall a good purchase.

Marshall Crenshaw's meld of rock & roll archaeology and empathetic songwriting remains striking lo these many moons since his debut. The 9 Volt Years, which collects demos and the odd radio performance, is a reminder of just how startling Crenshaw's forward-thinking retro style was in the early '80s. Fans will be familiar with some of these titles--"Someday Someway," "You're My Favorite Waste of Time," "Something's Gonna Happen," "Rockin' Around in NYC," heard here in versions similar to but different from the previously released takes, along with substantial retoolings of a couple of others--while more will quickly become new favorites. A pretty good "I'm Sorry" (Bo Diddley's, not Brenda Lee's) and a terrific reading of Sam Cooke's "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On" are the obligatory covers. Interesting Collection of Demos!.......2007-04-12

This is a collection of demos and none of the recordings were originally considered for release. So obviously, you can't expect hi-fi sound quality; nonetheless most tracks sound very good and many songs are easily as good as Crenshaw's released album-tracks.

Most songs are upbeat-pop-rockers and most of them are both fine and catchy; I especially like the two opening tracks "Run Back to You" and "Someday Someway"; the latter is supposedly the only track recorded with professional equipment.

Probably the stand-out is the simple, but extremely catchy "You're My Favorite Waste of Time", which was a minor hit for Bette Midler.

Interesting how Crenshaw's voice often sound like John Lennon's.

I'd sort of forgotten about Marshall Crenshaw until I saw/picked this disk up. Back in the early eighties he seemed like he was everywhere and his first three albums "Marshall Crenshaw", "Field Day" and "Downtown" were just chock full of pop classics. It all came back to me with the first few chords of the alternate version of "Someday, Someway" (with backup singers). This disc rocked me back in time, which is strange, considering I hadn't heard most of these songs before. There are a few stripped down demos of Crenshaw classics "Someday...", "Vague Memory", (an instrumental) "Blues is King" (dubbed "Bruce is King") and "Rockin' Around in NYC", but most are lost demos of songs that had never been released. Didn't matter, afterward, I just busted out all my old Crenshaw LP's and played them too.

This unpolished rarities collection captures Crenshaw at his best. What the songs lack in polish they make up for in raw energy. These demos are somewhat rare (although one or two have appeared on vinyl or CD). The liner notes are fun as well although I'd like to have seen a bit more of Marshall's witty comments.

This deserves 3 1/2 stars (it would get four but there are a couple of tracks that aren't quite up to snuff despite the fact that they are fun to hear). This album along with the recent This is Easy anthology and Live - My Truck is My Home would make the perfect homemade box set for any Crenshaw fan.

Marshall Crenshaws finest cd. All the songs are great. Pure pop songs at their finest. If this cd doesn't make you tap your foot non stop nothing will.

Basic Rock Fun.......2000-03-10

A good quick exposure to Marshall Crenshaw in action. Since some of his album's were produced to a perfect polish, it's sort of fun to hear them with more edge to them. High props espcially to "Someday Someway" (rockier), "Favorite Waste of Time", "Bruce Is King" and "Stay Fabulous". Quick note - "I'm Sorry" is NOT "I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)", but rather the Bo Diddley song. Since "A Collection" is apparently not in print, this may be a good way for neophytes to check out what Mr Crenshaw's all about.

Crucial Old-School Death/ Thrash.......2007-04-03

This review is for the remaster/ reissue by Displeased Records which was originally reissued in 2000 and again in 2006.

While not up to the volcanic heights of Consuming Impulse or Testimony Of The Ancients, Pestilence's 1988 debut is definitely on the right track directly out of the gate. It is very much in line with its spiritual brothers (namely Possessed's Beyond The Gates and Sadus' Chemical Exposure) and is a strong contender in the ring of straddling death and thrash. The lyrics are by no means remarkable but avoid the usual gory pitfall of traditional death. A worthy purchase for fans of extreme metal and a no-brainer for fans of technical thrash or Pestilence in general. An album that Pestilence has every right to be proud of. I own the 2000 Displeased Records remaster which includes both of their demos. The demos are extremely muddy but nearly impossible to find which makes them both a historical curiosity and a must for Pestilence fans.
