Here we go again with yet another compilation of soundtrack excerpts and vaporous ditties, to be filed under "Celtic" and pronounced, one assumes, with a soft "c." Some of the selections, such as those featuring old hands like Loreena McKennit, Sinead O'Connor, Clannad, the Corrs, and the Chieftains, actually merit the moniker. But how a pair of embarrassingly twee tunes by David Arkenstone and Vangelis (!) made the cut is anyone's guess. Other choices of dubious provenance include Annie Haslam and Steve Howe's cover of an already hoary Yes tune, a squirm-inducing bit of overkill called "Elysium" (by Elysia, whoever that may be,) and Ryan and Rachel O'Donnell's flaccid reworking of Enya's "May It Be" from Lord of the Rings. "Hedwig's Theme" from the OST to Harry Potter also appears, courtesy of the City of Prague Philharmonic, even though the books never so much as hinted at the owl's nationality. --Christina Roden
Customer Reviews:
Some great tunes.......2007-01-20
I acually bought this set several years ago and somehow lost one of the discs. I listened to the 2nd cd on a beautiful trip to Frankfurt and realized that I needed to have both cds. The music ranges in both sound and style and I think can appeal to all ages. I enjoyed the cds very much!!!
Music from a Mystic World.......2005-12-23
There are 31 tracks on the 2 CD set. I will not even begin to review all of them. As a compilation, this works very well. It certainly matches the theme of the subtitle well. Like another reviewer, I am puzzled by the harsh critics. While I have never actually resorted to saying negative things about other reviewers, in this instance, I feel I must. Their reviews are influenced by their ignorance.
Apparently, some think that only the Irish are Celts and only Irish music is Celtic. This is very inaccurate. Scotland is named for the Scots who came for IRELAND!!! The original inhabitants of Scotland were the Picts, who by the way were also Celts as are the Welsh and the Bretons of Brittany in France. Broadly, Celtic music can originate in Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Brittany. The problem seems to be that some folks wanted traditional Irish music, but the category of Celtic seems to be broadening in much the same way that Country Music has become broader than it was 40 years ago. I couldn't stand the old Country whiney music and still can't, but the newer country music is much more appealing. Stars like Garth Brooks stretched the narrow boundaries and appealed to much wider groups.
Enya has done the same with Celtic music. It is not traditional Irish reels, jigs, and the like, but it isn't simply New Age, either. She has successfully blended the two, leaving her music with a Celtic heart. This album stretches the boundaries, but it stays to the theme of a mystic world. It does not stray far from Celtic roots. I do not believe that is in any way misrepresented.
Concerning the reviewer that complained that they already had many of these tracks. That is not a problem with this 2 CD set. It is YOUR problem. You should have looked at the tracks before buying! I only have one duplication of the 31 tracks and that is because I also have the LOTR soundtrack. I do not mind having the repeated track as when I play this set, I get a very different mix than when the track is played in the context of the soundtrack. The change of context does affect the way in which the piece is heard. It works well in this compilation of mystic inspired tunes. So does "Hedwig's Theme." While Hedwig's nationality is not known, the entire premise of Harry Potter seems more Druidic Celtic than Anglo-Saxon. The reviewer that made the wry crack about including "Hedwig's Theme" apparently did not read the subtitle to the album. That explains the inclusion of this great piece of music by Williams. Oh, by the way, Williams is a common Welsh (CELTIC) name.
If you are looking for traditional Irish music, than this album may disappoint. If you are looking for mystical music with a Celtic soul, then this album should delight. To be sure, listen to some of the tracks first, but don't let the negative reviews of some dissuade you from purchasing without listening first. I thoroughly enjoy this set and feel that I got exactly what I expected when I bought it. I would also highly recomment it to others.
the best.......2005-12-08
the wife and i enjoy celtic music, and this cd is the best compilation of celtic artist!!!!!!! Love it!
Mystical Circles would be a better title.......2005-08-30
This is great music, however, the use of Celtic is far from being a description. I agree with another reviewer who felt the title might be more appropriate with Mystical Circles. The introduction to the CDs written by Gerry Wetzel shows he doesn't know much about what's Celtic. Uilleann pipes and bodhran are both misspelled for heaven's sake!
Shadow's Word - The Celtic Circle: Legendary Music from a Mystic World.......2005-08-26
*Sigh* Where to begin?
To begin, this CD is not truly "Celtic." Celtic music comes from the land of Ireland and I found that some of this music does not originate from here. Don't get me wrong, it's good music, just falsly catagorized.
Other than that, it is good music, however I feel it may have been better titles "The Mystic's Circle" or something along those lines. It contains music from excellent artists and has addictive and relaxing songs on this CD. Some from movies as excellent as the songs (i.e. The Mists of Avalon).
If you want a good relaxation CD that is not quite instrumental yet has angelic like voices, this would be a good choice. Two discs, 31 songs brings a good relaxation and meditation session to clear's one's body, mind, and spirit. Though that it may be wrongly labeled in my opinion, it is still an excellent CD with excellent music.

Worth buying, but not great.......2007-05-25
This is a nice cd, but I would not especially recommend it above others. I don't regret buying it, but it does not stand out above the many other cds I have of Irish music.
My dad loves it...........2007-03-02
I purchase this for my father as a gift.... The Irishman likes it, so it gets my dad's seal of approval. Can't beat that.
5 stars alone for including Brian Kennedy's magnificent "Carrickfergus"!!.......2005-12-02
I am an all-out Brian Kennedy fanatic. Brian who, you ask? Brian Kennedy, Belfast-born singer with a voice of spun gold, was Van Morrison's back up singer for several years, recorded the *original* You Raise Me Up (NOT Josh Groban), starred in hundreds of Riverdance on Broadway shows, and for all of that, he's unheard-of in the US. Celtic Circle 2 includes Brian's soul-wrenching rendition of "Carrickfergus," a beautiful song of lament, accompanied only by Brian's less-is-more acoustic guitar. Haunting.
Besides the wonderful gift of Brian Kennedy, Celtic Circle 2 builds on the solid combination of modern Celtic music and Irish-influenced New Age that was so successful on Vol. 1. This time around, we have two discs of the Chieftains (the timeless "Love Theme from Barry Lyndon" and "The Foggy Dew" with Sinead O'Connor), Clannad (Caislean Oir, Newgrange, Almost Seems), Maire Brennan, Irish-American powerhouse Cherish The Ladies, Aine Minogue, Nightnoise, fabulous Irish bagpiper Davy Spillane, James Galway, and the stellar team of Susan McKeown and Natalie Merchant on "River." Sarah McLachlan even makes an early appearance with Celtic-inspired "Drawn To The Rhythm." My only lament is that Loreena McKennitt wasn't featured; Ms. McKennitt's early works were classical Celtic-influenced melodies set to famous poems, accompanied by harp.
It's a much-welcome breath of fresh air to see Celtic and New Age done so well, as BMG has consistently shown on its "Celtic Circle" releases. So many "Celtic" releases are in fact substandard New Age treacle with anonymous vocals and synth instruments, but here we have 30 outstanding tracks that capture the lyric, melancholy beauty of the Irish nature, recorded by masters of the trade (the Chieftains have been around for more than three decades!). Yes, there are New Age pieces, too, tracks from Lord of the Rings and Titanic, but there is a much more balanced look at modern Celtic on Celtic Circle 2 than on the first (more Celtic, less New Age).
Perfect music for relaxing to at the end of a long day -- light a few candles, close your eyes, and let the soothing Celtic melodies inspire and refresh your weary spirit.
Wonderful Collection of Songs!.......2005-02-14
Celtic Circle II has a wonderful collection of songs and are inspiring songs to listen to. Many say the first is even better but this was the one I found at the music store and I am quite content with it. The lovely and powerful songs mixed together are wonderful and I am happy I bought the c.d. My favorite song- the one that made my heart jump to buy this- was Maire Brennan's Against the Wind. It's a song of great integrity and courage and I absolutely love it. There are so many other songs on here as well that are great too, including Sarah Mclachlan's Drawn To The Rhythm and Cherish the Ladies (Ireland of My Heart), which is a beautiful love song.
If you want to be drawn back into the romantic ages of tales such as King Arthur and Lord of the Rings settings were then you'll adore this c.d. Some songs speak of of the heart and some speak of the heat of battle for justice and right. It's a wonderful collection and I recommend it very much so! And when I do see Celtic Circle I in the music store it will be the very first c.d. I will try out because if it's as good as Celtic II then it will be worth the money!
ok but first one (Celtic Circle) much much better!!.......2005-01-28
The cd is okay with the Clannad and Moya Brennan songs but other than these, it comes across as flat and dull. Now, the original Celtic Circle is much more fun and entertaining with Clannad, Moya Brennan, Loreena McKennitt, and Lord of the Rings songs. So if you like celtic music, get that cd along with the LOR soundtracks, Clannad cds and Moya Brennan cds. The latter has a wonderful voice and can sing like a bird on her own even without surrounding music!!

Customer Reviews:
Worldly.......2006-08-02
I have enjoyed both the Libana albums that I have purchased very much. While this type of music is not for everyone, the rounds really help me relax with their interesting rhythms that almost remind me of Gregorian chant. It's almost completely a capella and all women's voices. The influences from around the world really appeal to me as well. The musical quality is very good. This isn't something I'd listen to in the car, but it is something that I would listen to if I needed to induce calm or intense concentration.
A Feminine Celebration.......2005-09-27
I can't imagine being without this CD. This is my third copy as I give it away, and then have to get it again. The voices are sweet and clear. The songs fit so many different occasions. I have taught them to women's circles, and circles of children. They gently encourage you to lift your voice in celebration.
Pretty good for circle........2005-08-09
This is a pretty good cd for ritual or learning new chants and songs. It's not for meditation and a lot of people may not like the sort of unprofessional sound to the voices. It's like sitting around a campfire and listening to your friends singing. I liked it.
Great music........2004-02-27
I had an old warn out cassette of this music and I'm glad to see that it's now available in CD format. The sound quality is much better than the old cassette. The voices are beautiful voice and the songs are thrilling. The arrangements are well done.
Lovely rounds.......2003-08-29
This is an excellent CD with lovely vocals. I look forward to using it in my winter soltice rituals as it has a very "rennaissance" feel. Very mystical.

Small Circle of Friends.......2007-03-26
Perhaps you will take my 5 star rating and review with a grain of salt but, as co-writer with Roger of "I Can See Only You" I was thrilled when I first heard the Small Circle of Friends version. As an old songwriter, it is one my favorite works, as is the whole CD. So, all I can say is, "Give it a listen and decide for yourself."
The entire CD is a kind of soft-jazz/pop Classic, from the selection of songs to the arrangements and vocalizations of Roger, Murray and Melinda.
Murray and I, ("Smokey Roberds"), with Jerry Riopelle, also wrote and recorded together, as The Parade, with Sunshine Girl, and others. What a blast from the past.
A Gem.......2006-09-16
I believe this originally came out in early 1968. Roger Nichols went on to collaborate successfully with Paul Williams but before that came this teaming with siblings Melinda & Murray MacLeod. Produced by Tommy LiPuma, arranged by Bob Thompson, Nick De Caro, Marty Paich and Mort Garson, this is music immaculately made. Their languid, oh so sexy version of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" does Bacharach & David proud. I'm sure Carole King also stood proud with "Snow Queen", one of her early compositions. The group Swing Out Sister used elements of "I Can See Only You" for their song "When the Laughter is Over". Their version of the Lovin Spoonful's "Didn't Want To Have To Do It"(which Jackie De Shannon also recorded, magnificently) is exquisite, sad & beautiful. The liner notes and history (by Steven Stanley) are informative. Tommy LiPuma produced many great, tuneful LP's in the late 60's. This is one of them, a true, lost gem.
wonderfull.......2005-10-05
wonderfull music and songs, including the good version of "with a little help from my friends". Incredible songs, incredible production. I was listening the cd and thinking of "pet sounds".

this one won't disppoint.......1999-09-24
Circle of Moons by Bill Douglas is one of those disks that I can't say enough about. In a musical culture that is dotes so much on chest-thumping rhythm and pretty faces, what a refreshing delight to happen upon a relatively unknown artist who is about nothing but melody, pure and simple. But isn't that the way it always has been? Listening to this disk takes me to a gallery studying Monet, Cezanne and Renior. The piano solo, "Into the Twilight" could be discribed as syncopated Debussy. This is not rock and roll, folks; nor is it, by a long shot, anything resembling sappy, sing-song dribble for the Geritol set. This is serious music that lies somewhere in between. Douglas also gives attention to that much maligned instrument, the bassoon; that absent-minded baritone of the double reeds; the jokster of the orchestra. Here, as on his other disks, it is given the full respect that it is due; carring melody as well as three, four part harmony. To be honest, like any other collection, Circle of Moons does have slightly weaker pieces than others. But if you are the type who apreciates thoughtful yet very mellow arrangements, this title will by no means disappoint
Music that enters your heart........1998-07-02
Pure and simple - this CD aims straight for your heart and soul- music that takes you to the "heavens" and the "moons".

I have owned this CD for 10 years now, and it still is my favorite! I often use it for meditation and relaxation. I honestly don't care for the other things that Dik Darnell has done, but Following The Circle is amazing. I recommend it highly!
Language and rhythm and music and nature speaks.......2001-03-19
Music for meditation. Music for reflection. Music for relaxation. In the explosion of technology, wall street, sky scrapers, pollution, the population explosion, AIDS, cancer, inflation......we are feeling alienated, distressed, overwhelmed, insignificant......and we long for quiet, privacy, quality, fresh air, clean water, no CNN around the clock, a weekend with nothing to do......this disc offers a momentary pause, a momentary respite from the pettiness, the burdons, the daily grind, a sanctuary of health and healing......we hear the tambourine, the drums, the wind, the thunder, the chanting, the rain......for a short time you might escape from all your troubles, from the heaviness all around......and feel something good, a momentary renewal, something to take with you when you return to the jaws of our modern day jungle. ps: I especially like track two, "Spirit Rain". This was the selection that I heard before I purchased the cd.

Ambient Music of the Southwest.......2004-04-16
Ah*Nee*Mah creates beautiful soundscapes on the guitar, keyboards, percussion, flute, violin and viola that glide over the listener like a soft rain ... It is refreshing and original music where the flute and percussion produce a calm soothing rhythm, that is supported by the violin and viola. Each instrument draws attention to itself at some point then fades into the background, as the next instrument is given the center of recognition. Strong emotions melt away ... what remains is a peaceful, flowing sensation that stays with the listener for several hours after playing the music. Diane and David Arkenstone have composed and produced one track for each of the sacred monuments in the Southwest that nature carved over centuries ...The music is reminiscent of the mysteries of nature and helps the listener tune into the sacredness of life. This is ambient meditative music at its finest. Highly recommended. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Excellent music!!.......2003-01-24
I bought this CD because I am a fan of Diane Arkenstone. This CD is composed and produced by Diane and David Arkenstone. This is the lastest CD released by Ah*Nee*Mah. Just like the 2 previous releases ("Ancient Voices" and "Spirit of The Canyon"), this CD is another excellent release! The music is soothing, relaxing, and comforting. It is great for background music while you work. It is also great for you to just listen to the music while doing nothing else. It the type that you will never get tired to listen over and over again! My favorite tracks are "The Red Tower" and "House of Spirit", seem to be hitting the right notes for me every time. I love to listen to each tracks and distinguish all the instruments involved. The music is just so mesmorizing!
I have all 5 Ah*Nee*Mah CDs. In addition to the tiles mentioned, there are 2 more listed ... that do not seem to be available anywhere else ("Spirit of The Southwest" and "The Spirit of Mesa Verde"). All 5 CDs are great CDs to add to your music collection! I look forward to more future releases from Ah*Nee*Mah.

Lilting, Lovely, Inviting and Hopeful.......2007-05-06
I was introduced to this artist through the work of Don Miguel Ruiz. I love his message and the hopeful honesty that peppers his work. I figured if he endorsed it, it would be worth trying out. OMG... nothing prepared me for the sheer quality in Cari Cole's voice and the inviting sound of her music. Not only is the message something I enjoy hearing in each song, but it is music I really look forward to putting on the CD and being taken on a journey. Incredible voice. Inviting music. Hopeful Message!
Very inspired - Eloquent.......2007-02-07
Cari has captured some of our common experience in this recording. Beautiful words and harmonies. As I continue to listen, I continue to appreciate. Several speak to my soul with reminders like, "I will respect my body" and other affirmations which reinforce loving our Selves. Always gold to be found and appreciated in Cari's creativity.
Beautiful.......2007-01-08
Cari Cole is uplifting and inspiring. Her music is a wonderful way to relax and be at peace. Cari has a beautiful voice that just empowers the words she sings so gracefully.
A Voice of Heaven.......2004-11-08
This is absolutely a piece of jewel to keep. I do not understand why our pop culture do not play the music in regular radio channels (well, maybe I just have not listened to the radio enough). The songs Cari Cole sing in this album is something you enjoy when you re-listen. Cari Cole truly has a beautiful voice. For some people, singing the prayers sometimes help them experience the words in a more powerful way because it involves more senses. This album truly helps us to experience love and peace.
My favorites are "Whenever the Time is Now", "The Circle of Fire Prayer" and "The Lord's Prayer", though all others are wonderful as well. All songs are mellow yet suthing.
For "Whenever the Time is Now", I especially like the part about "Whoever you are is enough, Whatever you have is perfection, Whoever you are with is the one". These are the words we need to be reminded when turbulent times come when we always need to have more and better. For "The Circle of Fire", I will always remember the four words we want to bear in mind, which is gratitude, love, loyalty and justice... and these words begin with us.
Some songs are beautiful in melodies but not in words. However, these 10 songs are beautiful in melodies and artistic in words. May you experience love and peace while listening to this CD as well?
DANCE YOUR WAY TO LOVE , HEALING, CELEBRATION.......2004-06-18
Both Cari's voice and the instruments on this CD are pure and powerful- shamanic,religious,sweet,heart-opening and healing - combined with the beautiful healing messages of Don Miguel Ruiz. Will be using this CD for dance events and healing workshops. Here in Brazil, paid $10 customs fee on top of price for CD. That hurt until I listened - I would pay $300 for this CD if I had to!
