Feel alive once again after listening to this CD. A true reflection of MVs vision. An incredible listen while stuck in rush hour on the 101n. bound outa Hollywood. Gran circo es esta ciudad! Aha!

4 out of 5 stars Ethnomusicology 101.......2001-07-20

Madness? The Specials? definetily way more grabbing than No Doubt. It is not far fetched to include La Maldita in this category. El Circo was perhaps their greatest achievemement (Tono, Solin, Kumbala, Pata de Perro). Yet, this incredible sense of touch with the realities of urban life still flows through their music. Yes, it has social content but it never ceases to be fun! This compilation is proof of that.

Although in the last few years they have been running behind the success of other bands like Molotov and the always mesmerizing Cafe Tacuba, La Maldita will always have something new to offer. Someday commercial US radio will play these guys and many others from non-English speaking countries.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Years and Counting.......2000-12-12

Maldita Vencindad are captured here at the apex of their careers as one Mexico's top rock acts. A sort of "greatest hits" package this CD illustrates the bands success drawing off of 5 different CD's. The sound of MV hasn't changed much throughout the years, just the themes have. The bands blend of hip-hop, ska and Mexican roots music infuse their sound with a freshness that has set a standard for many bands to follow. The members are led by "Roco", whose image is neo-Pachuco personified, imagine Edward James Olmos posing for the play "Zoot Suit" circa 1978, fast forward to 2000, he's the leader of this band of "Chilangos" who play their brand of Roc en Espanol that is "puro mexicano". This CD captures one of MV's strong points, their live act. Having seen them several times I can say they put on a tremendous show. Roco is possessed on stage, a shaman working his magic, he works the crowd into a frenzy. Some of that energy is evident on the "live" recordings but like most "live" recordings fails to capture the true magic. All the classic MV "hits" are here and even a few surprises that have not been released elsewhere. MV's appeal is on both sides of the border as the Raza on both sides of the border feel at one with the band. They look like us and emote our emotions, be it a Mexicano from the DF or a Xicano from the southwest. MV has always been political, always poignant in their commentary, never afraid to confront injustices or bring up disgraceful incidents such as the slaughter of students in '68 in Mexico City. Their music can be playful as well, sometimes we laugh to conceal the tears. Maldita deals the musical cards as though they were "loteria cards", watch out for the diablito and the joker, escuche la campana, Roco is El Catrin and El Brujo rolled into one. "Pachuco" is one of the best party songs, questioning the hypocrisy one generation puts upon another, the song is just a great statement about unrealistic expectations. This CD has too numerous superb songs to mention, 23 songs in all, suffice to say that this is a portrait in time of one of the best bands in Roc en Espanol. A decade 's worth of music that shows all the changes the band has been through. The music hasn't changed much it is just the issues. They have a unique ability to make their sound totally reflective of the culture on both sides of the border. It's like masked wrestlers and tacos de la calle with a side order of frijoles y arroz, Pancho Villa and Pete Wilson, the sights and sounds of the urban jungle, a street hustler spewing flames from the gasoline in his mouth, a cholo driving with his homies in a lowrider '57 chevy, legless beggars sitting on skates nailed to a board, a dude doing tricks on a skateboard, pandilleros and Aztec Gods, Chapultapec and East Los Angeles, una mezcla of a culture without borders, it's all here, it's Maldita Vencindad y Los Hijos del Quinto Patio, original home boys from the DF. The first ten years are captured here, I'm looking forward to the next ten.

3 out of 5 stars Strictly Nostalgia.......2003-04-21

If you were anywhere near NY in the mid to late 80's you probably remember how important this record label was to the underground dance scene. All of a sudden, the club scene in NY fell off in the 90's due to the insurgence of a super young crowd and the incarceration of a few key personalitites, although there was a slight revitilization at the Tunnel. All in all, Strictly rhythm still managed to stay authentic and crank out major hits.

This set doesn't do justice to their cataloug. Tracks 1-7 are great, 5 star all the way, but the rest is hardly even worth mentioning. I guess the disc is a chronicle of the unfortunate change in the underground culture. I'll give this cd a rating of 3, just on the weight of the 1st seven cuts alone, but it deserves less. Imagine what the rating would've been if the rest of the cd was as good? We're still Luv dancing, but only in our minds to sweet memories of days gone.

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT good............2002-05-10

CD 1 starts off HOT! Edited versions of timeless tracks we know and love... BUT after Black Magic's "Freedom" -sweeeew- it all came crashing down and continued into cd 2... from the wealth of material Mr. Vega had to work with, from the entire catalog, it's sad to see him turn this work into Dance Mix USA!

3 out of 5 stars Louie, what happened?.......2001-04-05

Let me start out by saying I really like Lil' Louie Vega. In fact I have a few of his cd's. This is by far the worst of the lot. CD1 starts with "The Warning" and "Luv Dancin'". Now if you know anything about House music, you'll know these are two timeless classics. I knew after hearing these two cuts back-to-back this was gonna be an awesome double cd set. NOT! You get one more great classic "Follow me" and then CD1 fades from that point on, getting a little worse with each cut. At the end of CD1 the tone turns Techno. If you know anything about me from my other reviews you'll know I like my House deep... real deep.

CD2? "What You Need", "Got Funk?" and later on "The Buddah Khan Theme." Besides those cuts this cd is hit or miss. Either you'll like it or you won't. Quite a few of these cuts, like many on CD1 didn't move me. I know this was supposed to be a compilation covering 10 years but I have to believe there were better titles to choose from to make these two mixes.

If you need a fix of some good Louie Vega I suggest you get "United DJ's vol 2" or the even more rare "Underground Network NYC." If these were sold at Amazon, I'd rate both 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars 10 years of the best ever house anthems in one album!.......2000-03-18

Imagine 10 years of the best ever house anthems all under one roof.

So, what have we here? A double CD, expertly mixed by half of the Masters at Work, Louie Vega. Disc one, 16 tracks, disc two, 15 tracks of the tunes that set roofs on fire the world over. Tracks like Logic's THE WARNING, or the 8th street anthem, "Watch me while I hang in front of UNIQUE clothing store on Broadway," LUV DANCING by Underground Solution (aka Roger S).

The hook, "Woo-ooooo, You got me luv dancin' "Woo-ooooo, You got me luv dancin'"

Roger packs the song with enough bass to bump your rump! Another anthem, killed to death by R-n-B radio stations across America, Aly-us' FOLLOW ME. Other top tracks on disc one:

BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE by Barbara Tucker FREEDOM by Black Magic (WHO?) KEEPS CHANGING YOUR MIND by South Street Player FREE by Ultra Nate LOVE & HAPPINESS by River Ocean featuring India CONGA by The Boss.

While disc one celebrates Strictly Rhythm's past, Disc two fast forwards to the future and Louie Vega's (aka Hardrive 2000's) Winter/Spring anthem, NEVER FORGET featuring Lynae on the vocals. Garage bliss at its finest. In the words of defunct rapper MC Hammer, "You can't touch this!" Beautiful vocal delivery, undulating beat, (Listen for Louie work the EQ's in the mix!) and masterful, hypnotic guitar. For all you aspiring DJ's listen how Louie werks NEVER FORGET with THE HORN SONG by the DON, riding the rhythms for all their worth. This is technique, this is precision, this is Louie Vega! Other top tracks on disc two:

WHAT U NEED by Duane Harden GOT FUNK? by the Funk Junkeez FOUND A CURE by Ultra Nate THE BUDDAH KHAN THEME by Buddah Khan

My personal favorite track on disc two, YOU DON'T KNOW, a tune Tony Humphries introduced me to via his ow defunct late night mix show. Listen to SuSu Bobien on the chords,

"You don't know What you did . . . "

Bravo Ministry of Sound for assembling this collection. Bravo Strictly Rhythm for your committment to quality house music.

5 out of 5 stars great selection of european dub classics.......2002-07-08

if you fancy the thievery corporation or kruder & dorfmeister, you should check this compilation: here, you'll hear the tracks that set the standards for all followers of the eased out vibe. kruder & dorfmeister are featured with a rare tracks, as well as shantel, rockers hi-fi, howie b. and most of all: norman cook, with the dub version of "dub be good to me", one of his first super hits from the late 80s. don't miss out on this, there's plenty of good, atmospheric and relaxed music on "dub infusions 1989-1999". oh, and some hi art is included too. the cover photo was shot by turner prize winner wolfgang tilmans.

4 out of 5 stars An oddity and a gem.......2001-08-07

This may not be everyone's idea of a fantastic album - you have to like this kind of stuff if you're going to enjoy it. It is a compilation album and I can't help feeling I'm listening to some bass fanatic's all-time favorite tracks. The album is mellow and sometimes stark, it is not really late at night music and it certainly isn't 'chilled'. The bass is wonderful - deep textured bass that you will totally miss unless you have a rather nice hifi or a good pair of headphones. Dub for techie Germans? Probably. The K&D and Fila Brazilia tracks are fabulous. The album cover says it all.

To all CMW fans although at first glance this album seems to have all the songs you already have (If you have the other albums) it doesnt, i have all the albums except "its a compton thang" and i only knew about 2 or 3 of the tracks off here, plus they are all good especially "streight up meanace" (from menace 2 society). Also if you have not heard CMW before this album is a good intro too the group and has some but not all of their excellent songs on it, i definitly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Mae Moore : The Greatest Voice Of Canada.......2006-04-30

It is vexing to ponder why Mae Moore is not an international superstar. If you listen to this CD you will hear an amazing vocalist with great range, emotion and passion. She surpasses the
venerable Jane Siberry as a lyricist, singer and musician(Jane Sibery is one of the world's greatest). This Collected Works CD is replete with diverse songs of joy, yearning, lament, celebration, sadness and some literally exalt with celestial fervor. Mae Moore is inspiring, edifying, mystifying and sanctifying ! Her music is absolutely phenomenal ! She is also an environmentalist and vegetarian who cares deeply about our planet.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2002-01-25

If you're just getting into Mae's music, "Collected Works" is the place to start. It has all of her hits, plus remixes and rare songs. I have no clue as to why Mae hasn't made it in the United States, but give this amazing Canadian artist a try, especially if you listen to Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant or Jann Arden.

And you will like it. DIY was throwing free parties backindaday when people were just feeling that acid house groove. This is not acid though. This is dancing, head bobbin', pleasant, chill, energetic, all in one. This is a beautiful selection of tracks, a great mix, you really can't tell if they were made in 89 or 99 -- super tight.
