This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Better than I remember it. I owned this in Vinyl, so now I don't have the scratches. Of course, my teen boys have taken the CD, so I don't get to listen to it very often. I think I will go take it back for a few days, or maybe I need to buy a second one!

My 2nd favorite Triumph album behind "Allied Forces".......2007-03-21

THE BAND: Rik Emmett (guitars, lead vocals), Mike Levine (bass, keyboards), Gil Moore (drums, lead vocals). Hometown - Toronto.

THE DISC: (1984) 10 songs clocking in at approximately 41 minutes. Included with the disc is a minimal 3-page foldout with original album artwork and song titles only. This is the band's 7th studio album. Remastered in 2004 featuring expanded liner notes, but no bonus tracks. Label - MCA Records.

COMMENTS: In my opinion, "Thunder Seven" was Triumph's last classic studio album. It capped a three album run with the band easily at the peak of their success. Three years prior showed the band firing on all cylinders with "Allied Forces" (1981); and a strong follow-up in '83 with "Never Surrender". "Thunder Seven" was followed by "The Sport Of Kings" (1986) and "Surveillance" (1987) - both simply under par albums in the eyes of fans and critics alike (not to mention the band not writing all their own material). "Thunder Seven" gave us two singles ("Spellbound" and "Follow Your Heart") - both surprisingly sung by drummer Gil Moore. The real gems are the deep album cuts that never made it to the FM radio waves - "Rock Out, Roll On" is a solid Rik Emmett rocker; "Time Goes By" hits you in the same vein as Allied Force's "Fight The Good Fight"; "Cool Down" sounds like it could have been written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant; "Time Canon" is a minute-and-a-half vocal (only) piece leading into the beautiful "Killing Time"; and two instrumentals - "Midsummer's Daydream" (receiving numerous guitar composition awards) and the stunning and uncharacteristic bluesy album closer "Little Boy Blues". For me, Triumph is/was always a guitar band first. Drums, bass and vocals were always great, but Rik Emmett's guitar was the show-piece here. Triumph seemed to be labeled Canada's 2nd best power trio (behind Rush), but I always thought they deserved more credit. Staying power with fans - "Thunder Seven" was certified gold in 2003, almost 20 years after its release. This is a great and often overlooked rock album (5 stars).

Rock While You Drive.......2007-03-16

Being a long-time Triumph fan, I decided that it was finally time to get this time-tested masterpiece of rock on CD, especially now that it had been digitally remastered and sounding better than ever. I just slipped this golden oldie into my car's CD player, cranked it up, and went off into the street just jamming to the wall of sound packed into the tracks these guys laid down. Definitely a treat for all true fans of heavy metal 80s rock.

Best Triumph - Hands down.......2006-10-25

Rik Emmett had said in an iterview that 'Thunder Seven' was the only Truimph effort that the band actually worked together co-writing the songs. As evident here in TS, the output was absolute magic. Even Mike Levine, who always seemed content to stand in the shadows of Emmets and Moore's flair, showed he was a master of that Thunderbird (put on 'Stranger in a Strange Land", crank up the bass, and enjoy the show." If only Emmett and Moore could have push their differences aside and joined heads instead of butting them, who knows what they could have achieved.

Classic Triumph record!! BUY NOW!.......2004-07-19

This is a record I fell in love with back in 1985, when it was released, and I still adore it to this day. Let me tell you about it.

Triumph has always been the "poor man's Rush"; hailing from Canada and being a 3-piece band, there are many similarities between the two powerhouse acts. Over the years, Triumph has been a bit more straight forward than Rush. Sacrificing abstract, "artsy" lyrics, for a more straight forward approach, Triumph would occasionally find themselves on shaky ground lyrically. "Thunder Seven" has almost no lyrical flaws, and the dramatic lyrical approach sets a definitive mood on each track. This is, arguably, the band's finest hour.

Rik Emmett. Mr. Rik Emmett. This is his record. Although a great team effort, "Thunder Seven" is a sensitive, rollicking, majestic, and poignant album because of Emmett's showstopping musicianship. With two instrumentals, one of a classical nature ("Midsummer's Daydream") and one of a jazzy blues style ("Little Boy Blues") highlighting the record, Rik Emmett is perfect. His vocals on the record are astonishing also. Singing with style and fervor, he goes "out on a limb" here. Sometimes lacking tremendous power and range, his vocal abilities always seemed systematic, or "charted" on previous releases. This record showcases not only his gorgeous guitar mastery, but it also maximizes his vocal abilities like never before. Listen to songs like "Time Goes By" and "Cool Down", and you are impressed with the passion and charisma that his vocals lend to those tracks. Listen to "Time Canon", an operatic masterpiece with beautifully layered vocal tracks, and be blown away. Rik Emmett takes a chance here, vocally, and rises to the challenge wonderfully. A duet with drummer Gil Moore, on the fantastic "Killing Time" track, was also a wonderful idea that worked beautifully. Gil Moore takes on a great deal of the vocal duties on the record, actually, and he does a fine job also.

Needless to say, the rhythm section of rock solid drummer Gil Moore, and the stiff backbone of bassist Mike Levine is flawless. This is just typical for them. Triumph has always been able to depend on their musicianship, even when their writing has faltered at times. All the things you love about this band appear on this record in force. The best lyrics they've ever written are here; Rik Emmett's guitar playing and vocals are even better than they usually are; and these are the finest arrangements in the band's career. "Thunder Seven" is a wonderful record, made by amazing musicians performing at their highest levels.
Let me just tell you that this record truly is ...a triumph.

Anyone who likes 80's rock has got to be impressed with this effort. Its too bad triumph isnt still making music together.
This is one of those CD's which dosent really have a bad track, all of them especially Time Goes By are very well done.
I was at the world 7 tour in support of this album and had a total blast, Triumph really came through. I give it 5 stars.

Head and shoulders above pack.......2003-06-03

While Rush is often sited as Canada's number one power trio, it is my firm opinion that for a brief period of time in the middle to late 80's Triumph put out superior material. Thunder 7 is one of those albums that was better than what Rush put out at the same time. In fact, this entire album is amazing. Not only does it contain a bona fide balls out rocker in "Spellbound", which hooked me from the very first listen, but also a "supporting cast" of other great rock and roll tunes. The fact that these guys spent their entire careers in Rush's shadow is both a sick twist of fate and an outright tragedy.

37 years old now and still love Thunder 7. Probably the best Triumph album next to Just a Game and Allied Forces. But they are all good. I have all but one or two albums that I bought
in the 80's when they were released and will eventually pick up some on CD. I still remember hearing Spellbound on the radio after work and the song still reminds of a girl I really dug in that period (hi Melanie). Enough drivel.

I agree with a lot of the reviewers that this is a really good album and every track is enjoyable. Even the semi-cheesy Follow Your Heart, which featured some of Triumph's great inspirartional, almost religious lyrics, which is one of the things I alway liked about the band. Ricky's songs were always the hits but Gil has one of the best pure rock voices and probably the best singing drummer in all of rock.

Rik soars with his maastery of all styles of music.
A great semi-overlooked guitarist and his voice is phenominal.
To the reviewer who said his voice does not stand the test of time, must think Aretha Franklin is irrelevant too.

Triumph is one of the bands a I grew up on and they take me back to a happy, somwewhat stoned, period of my life. Great in concert. Hard to believe bands like this use to be played on MTV. I still have my 1983 Never Surrender concert shirt in the top drawer of my dresser. Had the pleasure of seeing Rik
at a guitar clinic here in Atlanta some come 14 years ago and he was as nice as he is talented. A lot respect for the man, father and musician. Later that evening there was an impromptu jam at a local club that featured Rik, Vivian Campbell and local musicians including Atlanta guitar god Barry Richman. Rocky Mountain Way had the place rockin'!

Triumph at it's best!.......2003-03-01

This disc may very well be the "other" Canadian power trio Triumph's best effort. Led by the strong guitar playing and vocals of Rik Emmett, Gil Moore's vocals and drumming and Mike Levine's powerful bass and keyboard playing this disc is great from beginning to end.
With memorable songs "Spellbound", "Rock Out, Roll On", "Follow Your Heart", and my personal favorite "Time Goes By". There is also two great instrumentals on the cd "Midsummer's Daydream" and "Little Boy Blues".
From start to finish this is a "rock" solid disc. Rock N'Roll at it's best!

I own every 7N cd, and this one is far and away my favorite. They sound too alternacrap rock now... what a shame.
