Customer Reviews:
The beggining.......2006-09-05
The first album and already a masterpiece, that's the way Jorge Ben is. Strongly recommended, full of world known songs loke Mas que nada and Chuva, his unique voice is one of Brazilian and world music most powerful manifest to beauty. After this more raw and simple, check out two more complex albums and for me their masterpieces - Tábua de Esmeralda and Africa Brasil (for those two, 6 stars :)))
The King!!!!!!!.......2004-03-23
"Mas, que nada", was the first song written by Ben. Can you believe? This album is a prelude of a brilliant career. The three first solo albums (Samba esquema novo, Sacundim Ben Samba and Ben é samba bom) ,the period 1969-1976 (8 albums: From Jorge Ben to Solta o Pavão), and the 1979-81 period (out of Polygram) marked the climax of the brazilian music.
Jorge Ben: The TRUE genius.
Jorge Ben's first album, from 1963.......2002-01-02
Marvellous. A long overdue and reasonably priced reissue of Jorge Ben's dazzling debut album. This album helped revitalize Brazilian pop at a time when the bossa nova craze had largely played itself out... This record opens with his version of "Mas, Que Nada," the hit song that made Jorge Ben and internationally known songwriter. Here Ben works with several of the best samba-jazz and pop bandleaders of the bossa era, including Maestro Gaya, Meirelles, and Luiz Carlos Vinha... Combined with Ben's sleek vocals, each arranger spins magic. Some of the best songs on here, such as "Vem, Morena, Vem," have been neglected over the years, while others such as "Chove Chuva" are perennial favorites. Listening to the album in its entirety is highly recommended -- it not only captures a bright new voice coming through at a special moment in time, it also just sounds great as a cohesive piece of work. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Big Ben.......2002-12-20
Big Ben was the title of the original LP. He was a very young man at the time (1963) who had taught himself the guitar, which he uses as an instrument of rhythm throughout. I don't have this CD yet, but have had this album since 1965 -- when Jorge Ben introduced me to the incredible world of Brazilian music, and, ultimately, world music. For more than 35 years this has been one of my favorite albums, and its haunting, gentle, and rhythmically elegant songs have been shared with many ears, none of which had heard of him before.
Chove Chuva is lilting as Jorge Ben Jor's voice slides over the notes. Rosa, Meninha Rosa sounds as sweet and gentle a love song as any, sung to a lover or a beloved child. His voice purrs through Mas, Que Nada, seducing us into this introductory song on the album.
For those who feel they have an idea of Brazilian music, the listener will be surprised at the purity and apparant simplicity of the music. While today we are accustomed to many added layers of percussive rhythms, the Ben of 1963 had distilled his music into the guitar, which the background orchestration still lets stand on its own. I must confess I look forward to hearing this CD, as my vinyl has been played beyond its tolerance.
Great early Ben.......2000-08-25
This is the best era for Ben's music--the early 60's (through the mid 70's). This one album--released in 1963--contains hits such as "Mas Que Nada", "Balança Pema" (which was re-recorded by Marisa Monte), "Chove Chuva" and "Por Causa de Você, Menina". It's got that great early samba sound, and the songs are outstanding. Another one worth checking out is "A Tabua de Esmeralda" from 1974, but I personally would stay away from the stuff he released in the 80's and 90's--it's slickly-produced funk, and not anywhere near his earlier classics.
The Original from a true original.......2000-08-23
Rejoice, children, at the renewed availability of this crucial and downright revolutionary album. Originally released in 1963, Jorge Ben's debut effort forecast just about everything cool to transpire in Brazilian music since. Jorge was the first to figure out the correlation between Brazilian samba and African-American r&b and blues. The original version of "Mas Que Nada" is here, as well as classics like "Balança Pema" and "Chove Chuva" which continue, 37 years later, to be covered to death in Brazil. As influential to his peers (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil among others) as he is to younger generations, Jorge Ben is a primordial stylist on the order of Chuck Berry and Bob Dylan, although Dylan never swung this hard. Jorge's patented choppy guitar groove, often imitated but never equaled, is in full flow here. There is much more to Brazilian music than "The Girl From Ipanema," obviously, and this incredible album occasionally evokes images of said Girl going down to the crossroads and having a dalliance with Robert Johnson. Get this CD while you can, it's an extremely eye-opening experience!
Children, it all starts here..........2000-08-19
I'm so glad this is available again! This essential 1963 album was revolutionary in a number of ways. First of all, Jorge Ben was the first to figure out the correlation between Brazilian samba and US R&B and rock n' roll. That choppy guitar groove of his would prove as influential as João Gilberto's novel guitar style had been a few years earlier. This album contains a veritable stash of nifty, catchy and clever songs that get inside your brain and stay there forever, as borne out by the continued popularity of "Mas Que Nada" (the original), "Chove Chuva" and "Balança Pema" nearly four decades later through covers by young bands and singers. Many a wildly popular Brazilian artist picked up a guitar for the first time as a result of this absolutely fantastic album, an album which shows Jorge Ben to be a true original on a par with Chuck Berry or Bob Dylan, although Dylan never swung this hard. By paring Brazilian music down to its bare essentials, and connecting it with the best in African-American styles, he showed everybody else how to get across with minimum fuss and maximum effectiveness. The renewed availability of this all-time classic is a blessing, so be sure to get it while you can, as it's been known to change hands in recent years for over $100. If you're among the many who think Brazilian music begins and ends with "The Girl From Ipanema," prepare to be pleasantly shocked. This occasionally sounds like the girl from Ipanema going down to the crossroads and having a dalliance with Robert Johnson. Get it immediately!
