5 out of 5 stars Diversity for the maturing Classic Rock audiophile.......2007-07-16

I'm usually the last in line when it comes to live albums, and overly long performances with few lyrics and covers sound like bad ideas, too. But these guys pull it off with a nuanced, sublime style that just sounds oh so great!

You don't get a second chance to create a first impression, so start with "Red House" (Jimi Hendrix), where borrowing from jazzy George Benson ("On Broadway") brings the crowd to life for the first of many times.

It's not a bang-you-over-the-head albums, but it does get my highest recommendation for the maturing Classic Rock fan with adequate audio equipment - don't forget to set your equalizer to flat.

5 out of 5 stars Hearing is believing.......2007-06-22

If you haven't been blown away be a great live album since the Allman Bros. at Filmore East, or Hendrix' Band of Gypsies, or even Santana's Moonflower then it's time you got this.

Just look at all the positive feedback below!

4 out of 5 stars Real Live-F Marino and Mahogany Rush.......2007-05-12

Breathless!! That's how this recording leaves you. Like a master painter this group leaves deft touches on their musical canvas. There is no lover of classic rock that can sit through "Poppy" and not be moved. Both a homage to those who tread before them and an innovative guitar tour de force; this cut alone makes the disc worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Speachless.......2007-05-09

I've never heard anything like this. A guitarscape of three dimensional presentation that is unforgettable. Frank makes his guitar speak like a living, breathing thing. It's as if his guitar is a part of his body. After listening to these CD's I had to just sit and wait until I could bring myself back from the mind trip that Frank had taken me. This rendition of "He's Calling" is astonishing. Simply astounding. You want entertainment? Well let me tell you, this is it. I said it before and I'll say it again. I've never heard anything like this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-04-13

if you were to take all of the following guitarists; hendrix, stevie ray, satriani, vai, malmsteen, clapton, roy buchanan, duane allman, tony macalpine, santana, frusciante, gary moore, eric johnson, et. al., and combined them into just one guitarist, the end result would be something very close to frank marino. beautiful melodies and gorgeous tone? it's here. psychadelic, overdriven, blues/rock on par with anything you've heard? it's on here. blistering, cutting edge guitar, in the same vein as vai, satch, etc.? it's here. the man simply encompasses all of it in a way that no other single guitarist, that i am aware of, does. this cd is incredible in its scope. parts of it will make the hair on your arms stand up. parts of it will touch you deep in your soul and may even move you to tears. there are other times when all you can do is shake your head in disbelief and laugh. amazingly gifted musician.

5 out of 5 stars I'd give it 10 stars if I could........2007-07-13

For years this was the only Frank Marino album I had. I just figured that it doesn't get any better than this. Well recently FM proved me wrong. "RealLIVE" is more than twice the length of this and every bit as worthy, if not better. Having said that, "Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live" will never grow old. Here is an excellent mix of originals and blues covers. Far from growing tedious with repeated listens, this still stands as a high water mark for any band and exactly what you'd expect from an accomplished player and song writer like Marino.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live.......2007-05-12

First rate recording with lots of nods to its rock and roll roots. Touches of Santana, the Doors, Hendrix and many other pioneers of rock can be found by the careful listener. The guitar work is flawless and Purple Haze says it all. A definite "add" recommendation for any serious rock and roll collector.

5 out of 5 stars What in the World is this....??.......2007-05-06

I believe it was early 1978 and me and some friends were all big Styx fans, and the night had finally got here for the show. We were a little late getting to the venue, but no big deal...right?..... Styx wouldn't be coming on for another hour or so. Well, after we got inside, we heard this strange, amazing sound being performed inside. Who is this? What is this? Why didn't we know about this band? We heard like the last two or three songs of Mahogany Rush which was the back up band for Styx. Nothing against Styx, but Mahogany Rush completely blew them away, and the next phase of my musical education had begun. I didn't miss many back up bands from that night on! The reincarnation of Jimi Hendrix?..... maybe so!

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album in Classic Rock History.......2007-02-13

I saw Frank Marino & Mahogony Rush live in El Paso, Texas in 1978. I did not expect much becasue I never heard any of their albums before, but had saw this album in a records store and thought Mahogony Rush was an odd name for a band. The were playing with Rick Derringer and blew him totally out of the building. They played this album from start to finish. Wow what a concert experience. Only Black Sabbath (with Ozzie in 1979) and Page and Plant's Walking Into Clarksdale Tour match it for in live performances that I have been a witness too. This album is awesome from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars I was AT this concert!!!.......2007-02-07

This is definitely one of the best live albums EVER. I was at the taping of one of the cuts on this album in Tampa Florida, and I NEVER forgot that show. In a word AWESOME!!!!!!!

Tales of the Unexpected, had not heard this since I bought the Vinyl album, when it first came out. I had to get the cd, and it`s like seeing an old friend long lost. What can I say the music is as good sounding as it was back then. Buy it!

FRANK AND THE BAND ARE ALWAYS COMPLIMENTING EACH OTHERS MUSICAL TALENTS.

5 out of 5 stars Mahogany Rush's Finest!.......2006-08-04

"Tales of the Unexpected," one part studio, one part live, is my favorite Mahogany Rush album. The studio section includes two originals & two covers. The originals "Sister Change" & "Tales of the Unexpected" has Marino stretching out his farthest. Both songs almost bordering on heavy fusion. Marino just cuts out solid magnificent mountains of jazzy guitar runs at the speed of light, he is at once heavy, ethereal, concise & commanding, & his rhythm section cuts it through out following Frank like a car chase down a winding mountain road. "Norwegian Wood" & "All Along the Watchtower" add even more of an ethereal twist than was on the originals. Honestly, Marino made these songs his own with his unique approch, making these songs float on a bed of sweetly scented dream like airwaves carressing my ears & entering my brain like billowing tufts of opium smoke. I was addicted to their dreamy embrace.

The live section features heavy, heavy, gut wrenching blues/metal originals with "Down, Down, Down" & "Door of Illusion" hitting that blues, funk, metal path that was only trodden down by fellow contemporaries Robin Trower & Pat Travers this convincingly in the 70's... hell, at anytime. The live work here on par with Mahogany Rush's excellent "Live" album, leaving one battered & bruised & begging for more!

"Tales of the Unexpected" is Marino's crowning achievement, never to be topped in my opinion. Frank put out numerous albums afterward, but each album just seemed to lose focus to the point Frank was parodying himself. Funny enough, is was not until 2000 with the excellent "Eye of the Strom" that Marino captured past glories.

Marino has always been an artist that was hit & miss, his failures just that, but his success's, oh so sweet! Frank & his band Mahogany Rush can now be looked at as a band that was definitely born of Hendrix, but also pushed the grand man's ideas, & eventually came on to their own being, one of low valleys, but also soaring peaks that beg to be climbed.

4 out of 5 stars impressive livealbum, watch the main guitarplayer!.......2007-02-15

Having released already a fine bunch of albums under the Mahogany Rush banner, after the 1980 closer "What's Next" Frank Marino opted for a solo-carriere under his own name with the aid of brother Vince on rythmguitar and backingvocals but also retaining the same other bandmusicians (Paul Harwood bass, Timm Biery drums) so in fact all is just the same. In 1978 he gave us a live-album simply called "Live" (is there a better title?) which boasted his songwriting, were it not for the fact that at least half of the songs are not by his hand!, and of course the 1979 release "Tales of the Unexpected" was partially live, with 4 excellent outings, this time his compositions solely.
With the 1992 "Double Live" (now a single CD disc) we saw a fine return to form and also the "Mahogany Rush" flag again. Hot on the heels of the truelly excellent "The Power of Rock and Roll" and "Juggernaut" - a twin album, considered by me, they are so close in superb songwriting plus singing and guitarplaying by Frank, backed by a decent rythmteam (whith a change of drummers) - Marino was performing live everywhere and recorded some performances in the US (Texas, California) from which "Double Live" is taken. On vinyl four sides are now reduced to one disc only, with the extension an extra song. Strange as it might be this has nothing showcased from "The Power ...." which is a pity given the quality of those songs. On the other hand, "Juggernaut" (the album) is here presented with "Midnight Highway (spelled as "Midnite Highway"), "Free" and closers "Strange Dreams" and of course the titletrack. Even remarkable is that the 1980 fourpiece band release "What's Next" is presented heartedly with "You Got Livin", the Doors cover "Roadhouse Blues" (given his own songwriting abilities and the wealth of material at hand not really necessary, besides his playing was always more reminiscent of Jimy Hendrix than Robbie Krieger, the only thing they had in common was the use of the same type of guitar), "Rock 'N'Roll Hall of Fame" and as bonus the fuzzdriven "Something's Coming Our Way". Most songs are extended versions with plenty of room for blistering guitarwork. In "Electric Reflections Revisited" and "Sky Symphony To A Little Town" Marino demonstrates his guitarplaying abilities and creates unreal sounds with just a Gibson SG and a few devices, you can even hear a churchorgan. All in all a classic live-album.

5 out of 5 stars From Good To Great!!!.......2005-12-17

Wow I was blown away by the remaster job on this CD done by Frank himself. This disc always took a backseat to the classic "Live" CD from 78...and in it's original form it was OK.

Anyway now with the killer remastering job and bonus cut this is essential to any Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush fan. Some disc's say they're remastered but don't impress. This Double Live sounds so incredible now...it's like your listening to a new album...I waiting on my remasters of Full Circle & From The Hip...if they're done as well as this CD...I'll be very happy.

Frank rules and should be looked on as one of the top guitarist of all time...screw the critic's...and their Hendrix copycat label they've given Frank throughout his career. He might have started off at 16 playing like Jimi...but now he's got style and class all his own...as he plays jazz, funk, blues and metal ...with ease...and all with his own stamp.

5 out of 5 stars Best Remaster job I have ever heard!.......2005-08-16

I have to say that it is almost like listening to this gem for the first time. Frank Marino's first live album is the one that everybody talks about and deservedly so, it is a monster. But "Double Live" has always flown under the radar screen. And it's a shame because people missed a great live album.
One difference between his first two live albums was the production, even though "Double Live" was loaded with great songs, the sound was not that good, it badly needed to be remastered. Well it has been and it is incredible how much better is sounds, I can not remember a better remaster job, and I am big on remasters.
If you like Frank Marino get this album, it is loaded with Marino's brand of explosive guitar playing

5 out of 5 stars He's the best.......2007-07-09

The What's Next recording has always been a favorite of mine in the great Marino catalog. I think this gets as close to his live sound as he ever got in the studio. Something's Comin is as amazing the 50th time as it was the first and his version of the Doors classic is a highlight as well, although every cut is full of his fantastic guitar work and winning vocals. I love that voice of his. So I highly recommend this recording along with the rest of the Marino catalog. If you are looking for classic 70's hard rock( which is the only kind in my opinion)then get into some Frank Marino. And there's no better place to start than What's Next.

3 out of 5 stars getting better with each album.......2007-02-15

Originally a powertrio "Mahogany Rush" (not to confuse with the other Canadian progressive rocktrio Rush), centered around singer/songwriter and guitarmaestro Frank Marino sees the band on this 1980 release extended to a fourpiece with the aid of brother (as I assume - by the way, hundreds of albums are remastered on CD by George Marino, including latterday albums of this band, I always wondered if there is a connection) Vince Marino on rythmguitar. The sound though hasn't been changed a bit. This also seems to have been a turningpoint for the band because afterwards Frank Marino turned solo, with the more than excellent albums "Juggernaut" and "The Power of Rock and Roll" and the outstanding 1992 "Double Live" (now on single disc CD) but guess what, his 'backingband' on those albums includes exactly the same personell as on "What's Next", so it is de facto the same band only under another monniker. Anyway, the influence from "What's Next" on his latterday solo-carriere, especially as showcased on the aforementioned "Double Live" must not be underrated for 4 out of 13 songs from that album originate from this release: "You Got Livin", the Doors cover "Roadhouse Blues" (given Marinos songwriting abilities this seems a little bit out of place), "Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame" and as a bonus on the with that extra song expanded version - the fuzz laden "Something's Coming Our Way". Where he had the choice of a wealth of songmaterial from other albums (strange as it might be but songs from the far more recent "The Power ......" are completely omitted on "Double Live") it is remarkable to say the least that Marino took so many songs from "What's Next" with him on the road so he must regard this album as one of the best. Compared to the both mentioned latter ones I have to disagree but that doesn't make "What's Next" a bad album of course, on the contrary. Recorded before those and more or less sandwiched between the band and the solo-outing, following on the heels of the great "World Anthem" 1977), "Live" (1978) and the half studio/half live "Tales of the Unexpected" (1979) has "What's Next" enough on offer. For those who like blistering guitarwork and good rocksongs this album is for you. More than 25 years after its release it still sounds fresh and not a bit outdated.

5 out of 5 stars GOODBYE -COLUMBIA.......2006-01-18

YUO KNOW EVER TIME I THINK ABOUT FRANK MARINO I THINK WHAT IDOTS CBS RECORDS MUST OF HAD WORKING FOR THEM AT THAT TIME. THIS IS FRANKS LAST RECORD ON THE CBS RECORD LABEL AND HAS THE ONLY SONG THAT EVER GOT COMMERCIAL AIRPLAY STRANGE DREAMS AND I REMEMBER THINKING FINALLY!!! OF COURSE AFTER THAT CBS AND FRANK HAD SOME KIND OF DISPUTE AND WELL THE REST IS HISTORY. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO ACQUIRE THIS CD AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHING AND THEN ALONG CAME THE INTERNET AND THANK GOODNESS SOMEONE IN GERMANY HAD SAW FIT TO RE-RELEASE THIS MAGNIFICENT CD. SOMETIMES I AM GALD THAT FRANK LEFT CBS BECAUSE OF THE WAY THEY TREATED HIM BUT I ALSO WONDER HOW FAR THIS TALENTED INDIVIDUAL COULD HAVE SAILED WITH THE BACKING OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. THIS GUY IS IN A LEAGUE ALL HIS OWN- NO HENDRIX COMPARISON OR TROWER HERE -HE IS A VIRTUOSO THAT RANKS WITH STEVIE VIA AND SATRINIA -EVEN THEN I THINK MAYBE BETTER??? YES ABSOULUTELY. FRANK FINALLY FOUND SOME ENTERPRISNG CANADIANS THAT FINANCED EYE OF THE STORM AND WELL AFTER HEARING THAT CD I KNOW THIS GUY HAS TRANSCENDED ANOTHER PLANE AND HAS MATURED HIS SOUND INTO SOMETHING ALMOST EPHERIAL. COLUMBA'S LOSS OUR GAIN- FRANK RULES NOW AND FOREVER !!!!AND HE CAN MAKE YOU FEEL ALRIGHT

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten Masterpiece.......2005-05-15

It is so typical to do away with the great ideas. That's what you got here: Marino tearing it up

I was a senior in High school and this was what got me through; Fond memories. Frank never got the long-lasting recognition as an axe-master. He's brilliant and can sweep up with the best of them. The music on this album is very melodic.it's not an intsrumental. I like Frank's voice very much and the band he has with him plays excellent

5 out of 5 stars Classic and Timeless Album from a True Master - Frank Marino.......2005-05-01

I have always loved Frank Marino, have all of his albums on Vinyl and a couple on CD too. I have seen him live a few times and his shows have been Brilliant to say the least.

From all his albums, I love Juggernaut the most because it says a lot of things that I feel deep down inside and the Music created collectively by the whole band and especially the Genius Guitar Playing by our Dear Frank is just simply amazing.

I wish I could get hold of a few hundred copies of Juggernaut and the other Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush albums so that I could promote and sell the albums in my Music Shop. There is No Greater Feeling in my mind than selling an album I really believe in, like Juggernaut to the whole world!

Love You Frank Marino - You Are The Best and to hell with the Media who insult and mock you, what do they know?!! God Bless You Frank Marino & Mahohany Rush.

4 out of 5 stars Amazing Guitar Work.......2005-04-04

This album blew my mind after enjoying his earlier vinyls. A sharp, edgy, definitive style, I feel Frank Marino is highly underated. Case and point; listen to any of his live music. I once read he learned his unique style of playing from Jimi Hendrix while the former was in a coma. Interesting....

5 out of 5 stars Frank Marino bliss!!.......2003-02-04

This is one of his signature albums which he has continued to honor live. "Strange Dreams" is a classic song with a slight hypnotic flavor. I remember when this song got played on the radio back in '82. Great CD start to finish. If you like Jimi Hendrix, Pat Travers, and Robin Trower I can't see how you wouldn't like this and so much more of Frank's work. Frank can go from heavy metal to jazz and blow you away at both ends of the spectrum! Check out "Double Live". There is a great live version of Strange Dreams on it also. As you will see on this website, almost all of the reviews for Frank's albums have 5 stars. There is good reason for this.

4 out of 5 stars The Montreal Days.......2006-10-24

I remember being a Montreal High sophomore back in 1970 and everyone was talking about this band playing the high school dance circuit called Mahogany Rush. The rumor was was that the guitarist had been "tripping" and had somehow been rescued from his bad trip by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, miraculously learning guitar overnight when he came back. The big single at the time was a 45 called "Buddy" which recounts this story in part. The band made a surprise appearance at our school's morning assembly to advertise for the weekend dance. I was blown away. Even at 16, Frank Marino could play well enough to legitimize the legend. Although none of the songs off his first album appear on this compilation I still recommend it...just thought I'd add this historical footnote.

4 out of 5 stars Good Anthology Of Hendrix Styled Canadian Guitarist.......2002-03-09

Frank Marino was a Canadian guitarist who adeptly played in a Hendrix hippy/psychedelic guitar style with his band Mahogany Rush during the seventies. "Dragonfly: The Best Of Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush" only features his tenure at CBS. His work before and after this period is not included here. Marino's style especially later in his CBS tenure tended to be more overblown and bombastic than the work of another Hendrix aficionado Robin Trower. His playing was also not as bluesy and more metallic than Hendrix fan Stevie Ray Vaughan. That being said he still produced some interesting material and his albums always featured some great playing. Reportedly he used to participate in guitar "cutting" contests with Ted Nugent and Mark Pinera (Iron Butterfly). For most of his tenure at CBS his band Mahogany Rush was a power trio with Paul Harwood on bass and Jim Ayoub on skins. Most of his best tunes are included here such as originals like "Jive Baby", "Dragonfly", "Sister Change" and "Woman". Covers like "Johnny B. Goode", "All Along The Watchtower", and "Roadhouse Blues" prove he could also interpret the material of others. He was perhaps at his best in a live context and there are a number of cuts from his "Live" lp and a live version of "I'm A King Bee" from the rare "California Jam" lp.

I was disappointed that a few cuts like his covers of "Purple Haze" (often his concert encore) and "Rock Me Baby" were not included. I also miss "The Answer" and "Broken Heart Blues" and somewhat oddly one of his last singles for CBS "Strange Dreams" was omitted. This set provides a good sample Marino's playing and style. Rumor has it according to his web site that CBS is planning a multi-disk box set later in the year. Hopefully my favorites which were omitted from this compilation will be added to that set if it is released along with some unissued live and studio tracks. If like what you hear on this set your next step should be the purchase of the "Live" lp.

4 out of 5 stars Ignore BluesDuke`s scathing review !.......2002-03-07

This guy BluesDuke speaks well but I`m not convinced he has the qualifications to be overly critical of Frank Marino or any other artist.Frank is much more talented than BluesDuke gives him credit for.So again I say disregard BluesDukes review completely! Let BluesDuke strum his 3 chords on an old silvertone with his big beer belly hangin out,we will listen to Frank Marino!

2 out of 5 stars It's The One To Have If You Absolutely Must Have Him.......2000-11-30

Like Robin Trower, Frank Marino was one of a few thousand guitarists who fell to Jimi Hendrix's feet and couldn't stand up on their own again if you replaced their legs with robotic limbs. Unlike Trower, though, Frank Marino was so much flash that what little substance he bore came through when he played the blues. And even there it doesn't exactly make him much more than a hit-and-run bystander. In other words, in terms of real quality or depth Marino doesn't even come close to "For Earth Below," never mind the Electric Ladykiller Himself...

But if you really have to have something of him in the hard rock library, stay strictly with this one. It's useful as a kind of one-stop guitar lesson for those players who absolutely insist that shredding the daylights out of the fretboard is the only way to play the instrument - Marino was nothing if not a technically overendowed player. And, to whomever's credit, the selection is done quite prudently. By the time Marino and company (Mahogany Rush didn't always have Marino's name top billed, and they were just a workaday power trio who probably got in over their heads when they got the recording contract their presumed bar audiences were naive enough to believe they deserved) are finished here, it's over before you begin contemplating putting them under arrest for shameless, self-congratulatory derivation.

And at least you don't have to put up with an entire album's worth of philosophical pretentiousness (think "World Anthem"), either. Best leave that to Canada's other Rushing power trio - the one without the Mahogany in the name, that is - and let this one remain the pleasant memory of misspent youth they were really destined to become in the first place. For a Hendrix sycophant with some substance and a damn sight better feeling for the blues, the word is Stevie Ray Vaughan.

5 out of 5 stars BEFORE THERE WAS SHRED!.......2000-10-10

Before there was shred, before anyone knew what to label it or how to market it, there was Frank Marino. But he was much more then a speed freak, as this retrospective (which traces his band's late-seventies Columbia years) clearly demonstrates. Songs like "Dragonfly" (a haunting bit of psychedelic funk) and "Requiem For a Sinner" (with it's droney, Middle-Eastern overtones and Marino's amazing Arabic-tinged guitar solo) are not merely testaments to his agility but also to his adventurous and creative spirit. Of course,Frank often just liked to boogie, as he most dramatically does on the scathing live versions of "Johnny B. Goode" and "Who Do Ya Love," where he plays some of the fastest and intense blues licks ever heard by man. Long may Marino wail!

5 out of 5 stars Just buy it and smile.......2007-02-02

If you are a Mahogany Rush fan and you don't own this, SHAME ON YOU! It's another example of why I believe Frank Marino is one of the most under- appreciated six stringers to ever pick up a guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Give it some listens.......2006-03-14

I agree with the previous reviewer that it is hard to beat FMMR live, especially if you can see it in person. However, I would give this a few listens before making a judgement. At first, due to the sophisticated nature of the music itself, it is hard to take everything in. Upon repeated listens though the excellence of this will really stand out. Rise Above is one of the newer spiritual classics Frank is writing these days, How Long has a great guitar hook, and Ride My Own Wave is an in your face rocker. Please of diverse music for the mature fan, and also some great heavy rock that will impress those new to this man's style and genius.

2 out of 5 stars *** Better Live than Studio ! ***.......2006-02-01

Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE fan of Frank Marino ! I have had the privilege of seeing him live on several occasions and ALWAYS walk away from his performances slack jawed ! He is a PHENOMENAL guitar player , BUT in all honesty his true strengths are in his 'Live' recordings and not studio albums . This album is only interesting to die-hard fans and not casual listeners. It's only saving grace is in fact the nearly 17 minute bonus track that was tacked on for the re-master release , but even that isn't enough to give it the nod of approval . Over all I was very dissapointed as I am with all of his studio releases . If you REALLY want to hear how talented this man is , then skip the studio releases and pick up his LIVE recordings ......There are three official " Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush " live albums and ALL of them are OUTSTANDING !!! Hendrix / Trower / Alvin Lee ALL get a run for their money by Frank's live stuff !!!

5 out of 5 stars Under-rated album from the Re-master!.......2005-08-19

I'll keep this brief, this over-looked album has come alive with a great re-mastering which reveals some great drumming and percussion work previously further down in the mix.I had missed the excellent solo on "Ride my wave" which is a real treat for fans of cool guitar solos.
But this album is essential for Marino fans due to the amazing bonus track "Hingston Nights".This is a 16 minute instrumental that I would describe as a groove. There's a great live feel to the tune and you feel like you are sat between the drummer and Frank's amp.Towards the end of the track Frank plays some awesome improvisation.MUST BE PLAYED LOUD!!!

4 out of 5 stars Production sucks.......2006-10-05

Some of the best guitar you'll ever hear. Too bad the production stinks. Sounds like a blanket of static was laid over every note of Frank's guitar on Runnin Wild. Don't know how that tune could have gotten out of the studio like that.

Nothing like Juggernaut production wise.

5 out of 5 stars Absoluly Frank's beste album.......2006-07-31

I'm a big Frank Marino fan since the 80's. Frank has such a special sound, soo boogy and rock: excellent.
If you want to get to know his music better than buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars No Higher Power.......2005-10-07

I bought this LP when it was released in '81. Yes, I have everything Frank did up to "From the Hip" on vinyl. The Power of Rock and Roll" was the first Frank Marino album that I had ever purchased. Just so the story is straight I bought it "because" of the album cover. I didn't know who Frank Marino was but he had long hair and it looked like the album would be guitar intensive. Holy Crap! Is that an understatement! At that time most albums were pretty corny, and Black Metal was just surfacing. I played this album and kind of ignored it at first. Then "Ain't Dead Yet" came on and I was pole-axed! THIS was what playing the guitar was all about. This wasn't just lead from start to finish, it was another voice singing right along with Frank. I have never heard anything like it before or since..... I still get tweaked every time I hear this album. This is my favorite album of all time by my favorite guitar picker. Frank is the best; bar none. I bought everything with Frank's name on it. I even bought LPs mastered by George Marino because it was close to Frank Marino's name(Ya I know it doesn't make much sense but I smoked alot of weed back then....). I am not writing this really as a review just as a testament to my favorite guitar slinger. Frank, thank you for all the great music that you have created and I hope that you create much, much more. Buy ANYTHING with Frank Marino on it!

5 out of 5 stars Odd Comic Book Cover Yet Jaw Dropping Guitar Work .......2005-08-23

I have to agree with the previous review: a sadly over-looked and under-rated album that deserves a place in every guitar players file and "to do" list. Not only players, but fans of fast, furious and yet effortless guitar playing combining high gain heavy rock with blues over tones and flare-ups of jazzy under-currents. From what I have read, Frank Marino had been arm twisted into making this recording... that he hated and resented. Hey, hate the industry, not the music. This was my third Marino/Mahogany Rush (LP)purchase back in the early 80's, and I felt that this was a bit ahead of it's time and almost too full of testosterone to appeal to most folks. A recording that must be enjoyed with high volume, such as driving home after work and blasting it. Undeniably, this recording is a schooling of jaw-dropping magnitude. "Oldies" (no disrespect) like Frank Marino, such as Uli Roth and Robin Trower, are all individuals who despise the music industry (rightfully so) and beat their own path, yet I feel that Frank Marino did and continues to take it to the next level by marching on, never quitting and never straying from "listenability"... does that make sense?
The Power Of Rock And Roll is just what it says: POWER. Previously, Frank Marino had been boarderline trippy, low gain guitar, some synthesizer and fresh softish rock with blues and jazzy guitar riffing... tunes that departed from any steaming meef that was being produced by the rest of the industry. Then, all of a sudden: BAMM! This one recording was like an explosion, Juggernaut the echo, then after that, Frank was Frank again.
To make short work of this rambling soapbox pontification: buy this one now, in fact, buy them all... you will thank yourself. With a family to support and perpetually short on cash, I will always have money for Frank Marino recordings though, that much is certain... for amongst all the sand in the desert of mainstream music, Frank Marino continues to be the jewel hidden just underneath the surface.

5 out of 5 stars All the reviews so far have 5 stars. "Nuff said"........2005-06-08

This is one of the most under-rated recordings of all time.

If it was released under a different package and presentation, it would have been considered one the greatest guitar albums of all time.

This was Marino's attempt at going full out. The 60's jazz-rock, Hendrix feel, (adapted to match modern times) is gone.

Marino has not said kind things about this recording. It was a one-time effort.

Marino was probably embarrassed by the record company's decision to have a "cheesy" front cover and "poser" back cover, making him look like shallow hair metal performer.

People viewing this recording, but not listening to it, may have received the same message as well, as it did not sell that well.

The next recording Juggernaut, (a brilliant recording none-the-less), returned to the jazz rock/Hendrix feel.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves, thus the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

2 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Guitar Playing but...........2007-01-15

This guy can really wail. This album contains some extraordinary guitar soloing by an exraordinary but underappreciated guitar player. That said, this is not a great album. The reviewer SM has hit the nail right on the head. This sounds like one long fast guitar solo over a plodding mid-tempo rythm section, both stuck in an endless loop going on for 62 minutes. When the album starts out, you sit there thinking, whoa, this guy can really play. But by the time the third or fourth song rolls around, the entire thing becomes excruciatingly dull and repetitive to the point where the listener is constantly checking the CD program to see how much time is left before the CD mercifully ends. That's not a good thing, folks. The moral of the story is that great soloing alone does not make for great or listenable songs. There has to be some structure and context to the soloing. The songs here are rather nondescript and totally indistinguishable from each other. There is no change in the tempo of the songs (they are all midtempo), there is no change in the tone of the guitar (that harsh metallic tone starts to grate on the ears after awhile), there is no variety of textures, there are no other instruments besides guitar, bass and drums other than a hammond organ in one song. And the nondescript bass and drums don't do anything other than provide the same machine-like boring mid-tempo backdrop to the endless guitar soloing on every song. In short, all the elements that make for an interesting album are missing, except for some admittedly fine soloing. If you want to hear what Frank Marino sounds like in his best and most diversified arena, get the excellent "World Anthem" CD. And Frank, on your next CD may I suggest: add more instruments, play some songs fast, some songs slow, play some acoustic, some electric, experiment with some different tones and timbres, and create some songs with a definite melody and a catchy riff and structure that you can play around with rather than just playing a lot of free-form endless soloing...

5 out of 5 stars Still Making Great Music.......2006-08-01

I've been a fan since about 1975. This a more mature Frank Marino as evidenced by the lyrics. My favorite cut has to be Ordinary Man. Love the "3rd Stone from the Sun" ending. But all the songs are strong. Get his 'Real Live' cd also and see that he is just as technically good live.

He has got to be one of the best overall guitarists ever. He plays hard rock, psychedelic rock, jazz, blues, slide all at a maestro level. Some guitarists may be able to come close to him in one type, but he has mastered them all.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD TO BE BACK.......2006-01-17

I ORDERED THIS CD FRON CANADA AS SOON AS I KNEW IT WAS AVAILABLE.I DID NOT NEED TO HERE A CUT FIRST- I KNEW IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!AND I WAS RIGHT-BUT THAT'S THE STORY WITH ANY OF THIS VERY TALENTED MANS WORK- HE IS VERY POSSIBLY THE MOST UNDERRATED GUITARIST EVER-HE HAS DEVELOPED SUCH A STYLE AND SOUND THAT ANY FUTURE RELEASES SHOULD BE SENT AUTOMATICALLY TO ANY TRUE FAN -HE'S THAT GOOD!! THIS ALBUM SHOULD DISPEL ANY RUMORS ANOUT A HENDRIX REINCARNATE!! FRANK HAS TAKEN ANY SOUNDS THAT CONNECT HIM TO HENDRIX AND EXPOUNDED ON THOSE SWEET NOTES UNTIL THEY ARE TRULY WORKS OF MAGIC-HIS ABILITY TO FUSE EVERY FORM OF GUITAR PLAYING FROM JAZZ RIFFS TO RIGHTEOUS BLUES LICKS IS A TRUE INDICATION OF HOW TALENTED HE REALLY IS. I SMILED A BIG SOUTHERN SMILE WHEN I HEARD AVALON AND THOUGHT FONDLY OF ANOTHER GREAT UNDER RATED GUTIARIST THE LATE DEWAYNE ALLMAN.
