Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

I have always held Noise International Records in high regard. Some of the heaviest, smartest, most skilled, and most original metal bands ever were on the Noise label. There was the sinister experimentation of Celtic Frost, who for better or worse laid the foundations for modern black metal. There was the quirky science fiction progressive thrash of Voivod, a group who could not be accused of ripping anyone off. There was the highly technical Watchtower, whose influence can still be heard in groups like Dream Theater and Dillinger Escape Plan. There was the bone-crushing aggression of Kreator, one of the earliest examples of a band combining Slayer-esque heaviness and intensity with Iron Maiden-styled melodies. But one group that deserves mention with this esteemed bunch is Mordred.

Mordred came from the same San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene that also spawned groups like Testament, Exodus, Forbidden, and yes Metallica too. They had all the ingredients that necessitated a great thrash band: crunchy technical riffing, guitar solos that pushed the limits of human dexterity, powerful and complex drumming, etc. However, Mordred had one thing that set them apart- that being the fact that they incorporated funk and rap into their sound.

_Fool's Game_ from 1989 was their first album in a terribly small discography. It is a top notch thrash fest from beginning to end - with two exceptions. The first being the minor hit "Everyday's a Holiday", which included slap-bass and turntables. And the second exception was a cover of Rick James' "Super Freak". This was recorded a year before MC Hammer turned it into "Can't Touch This". Which version, pray tell, got the most attention from the music press? But you know what they say, cocaine is one hell of a drug.

If I have one problem with _Fool's Game_, it's that it doesn't display the funk-rap-metal sound that would surface on Mordred's later work. Only two songs, "Everyday's a Holiday" and "Super Freak", do so. The rest of the album is straight up, though finely played, thrash metal - a genre I very rarely say anything less than good about. I could be wrong, but I believe the band was testing the waters before deciding to make the dive. Maybe they were worried that it wouldn't go over too well. Guess what Mordred? For you, it did. Why didn't bands like Limp Bisquick, Linkin Park, and Crazy Town have the decency to ask themselves the same question?

Pretty Nice thrash.......2006-05-21

Meh, despite the funk-oriented [...] this is a pretty worthwhile album. Hell, some tracks are even in the vein of Anthrax's Among the Living with alot of shout along choruses.

The First To Mix Funk With Metal.......2003-04-13

Contrary to popular belief, funk mixed with metal and rap was not invented by Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, or House of Pain. A little known Bay Area Thrash band has that dubious honor which put them way ahead of their time. Mordred's debut was the first metal band (and thrash at that!) to employ funk elements into a thrash setting by covering Rick James' "Superfreak" and also their own original "Every Day's A Holiday".

Despite this mix of genres Fool's Game is a thrash album and a good one. "State of Mind" kicks things off with a great opening riff and driving thrash rhythyms while incorporating subtle melodies, something often devoid from standard thrash bands. "Every Day's A Holiday" is unique and simply brilliant with its perfect blend of thrash and funk and probably the only song that incorporates these two diametrically opposed generes into a masterpiece of musical creativity and humorous views of the working world. "Superfreak" is an infectious cover of the Rick James original with heavy muted guitar rhythyms mixed with subtle keyboards and surprisingly appropriate vocals.

The rest of the album consists of competent but not groundbreaking thrash. Mordred never acheives the hyper-pace of Slayer or Sepultura but is more of a mid-paced thrash band similar to Metal Church in many tempo aspects. "Spellbound" and "The Artist" feature Anthrax-like backing choruses but with some unique vocals from Scott Holderby. Holderby's vocals are among the most discernible in thrash and the guitar work is impressive despite drawbacks in tone. The album suffers from subpar production and drums that just don't stand out in the mix.

A wonderful collection of show tunes ........1998-12-06

Lost in Boston II is the second group of songs that have been put on an album that were cut from well known musicals. It is better than the first Lost in Boston- only because the songs collected here have nary a loser(okay,"It Was Always You" from Applause sounds like a theme from a 70's Tv show- but it's still tuneful and endearing).Some listeners may be familair with some of these songs from the Ben Bagley compilations, but for me many were complete revelations. For example, I had heard only negative things about the score to Grand Hotel- then I played the showstopper cut from the show called" Flaemmchen the Flame Girl" - and I now would like to hear what was not cut! The same applies to the team of Jones and Schmidt. When I heard the gorgeous song, "Thousands of Flowers" I immediately went to buy the final score of "I Do I Do"... The first two Lost in Bostons confirmed how underrated this song team truly is. The liner notes are informative and to the point but as with all good stuff, they leave you wanting more.Don't miss this CD. It is better than many complete Broadway musical scores!
