Customer Reviews:
my favorite album.......2007-07-06
I consider myself as a diehard deftones fan. I honestly can say that I enjoy anything that is produced by them. I think "around the fur" is the first cd I've owned by def as far as I can remember. I love the sound they have on this release. Its signature def and I can't get over it. This album still gives me the chills.
Who's the Chick on the cover?.......2007-06-27
I haven't listened to this CD in years and when I mean years I mean since 1999, and I had only really listened to 1 song... My own summer, it wasn't until the b-sides cd was released and I watched the clip for 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)' I had a renew interest in the album. Upon first listen I was blown away, each song well crafted, full of angst and clever lyrics. After repeated listen's especially the ace 'Head Up' on high rotation, I could see the formula that has been ripped off from countless other 'Nu Metal' bands ***cough*** Linkin Park ***cough***. At least the Deftones made it their own sound and have grown into what they are today...

A perfect balance between what we saw and what we knew was to come!.......2007-02-01
There was a time when I regarded The Deftones sophomore album as their weakest link, but after another listen I began to realize that it very well may be their strongest. Mixing almost to perfection everything that made `Adrenaline' so pulse pounding and everything that made `White Pony' so revolutionary; `Around the Fur' is the perfect transitional piece to show where a brilliant band was headed, musically and emotionally. Starting things off with the infectious `My Own Summer' and ending things with the strangely inviting `MX'; `Around the Fur' is close to perfection.
`My Own Summer' starts things off brilliantly. It sports a great riff, fun to listen to and even more fun to play. Chino's vocals are great and his screaming is just infectious (I actually have this song as my cell phone ring tone). This was one of the first Deftones songs I ever heard. It graced `The Matrix' soundtrack and proved to be the best reason to own the soundtrack in the first place. Brilliant way to start an album. Grabs you immediately and keeps you clenched in their claws.
`Lhabia' is another brutal track but the next surprise comes in the form of `Mascara' which is much slower, eerier and at times somewhat disturbing. Some have noted this may be about an abusive relationship, and I can see that here. It's beautiful in it's oddity for it's not a song you'd expect from this band, but it's a welcome addition to a masterpiece.
`Around the Fur', the title track to this album, is everything you'd want in a Deftones song. It starts off with some great drum work and then fills out much the way of `My Own Summer', commanding and infectious, a song you can sing along with and get completely stuck in your head. My old band used to play this song a lot because it's diverse yet not too complex. It's not standard so it's interesting, yet it's not too complicated to where you get lost figuring it out. Chino's lyrics are great here; different and thought provoking...the best thing about this band is Chino's genius.
`Rickets' is again, brutal. `Be Quite and Drive' on the other hand is not so brutal. Some have regarded it as the best song The Deftones have released but I strongly disagree. `Passenger' was far better (still my all time favorite Deftones song). I actually hated this song when I first heard it. I wasn't impressed, but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me. I actually really enjoy it now...but that took a while.
`Lotion' is straight Deftones, a track that could have passed for `Adrenaline'. Chino sounds furious throughout this song, and when he chants "I feel sick" you just know they nailed this song, they got it right. One of the things they do VERY right is `Dai the Flu' a song that stands alone as the best track on `Around the Fur'. It's eerie to a degree and completely contagious, a song that's unlike any other they've done. Chino's vocals are impressive, soft and delicate not to mention strong and determined.
`Headup' has Chino trading lines with Max Cavalera from Soulfly. It's brutal, intense and proof that the ONLY band that should even attempt the whole rap/rock thing is The Deftones. They just get it right. The closing track `MX' features almost a conversation type verse between Chino and a woman. It's a very different kind of song, but it's very well done and makes you want to listen to it over and over. A great way to close out an album. So, in closing...this is a fantastic contribution to the brilliance that is The Deftones and will look and sound pretty good in any CD collection!
My favorite Deftones album.......2006-12-13
I first got into Deftones during my senior year in high school when I went out and bought "Around the Fur" (the band's second album), and quickly became one of my all time favorite albums, and it's also my favorite Deftones album overall. The first song "My Own Summer (Shove It)" was the first song I heard from these guys prior to buying this album. Chino Moreno's vocals that can range from soft whispers, to melodic singing, to mad crazy screams. Stephen Carpenter has great guitar riffs that pack an intense punch and are downright catchy. Chi Cheng's bass lines are pretty cool and very ominous. Abe Cunningham's drumming may not be fast, but it's very hard hitting, and keeps my pulse pounding throughout. The first song "My Own Summer (Shove It)" is an instant classic and it's my favorite song on this album. The driving guitar riffs and the chorus is just catchy as hell. I definately agree with A.Stutheit that this song would make a great soundtrack for the last day of school (thank God I'm not in school anymore, hahahahaha). Another one of my favorite songs "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" is another instant classic and it's very melodic with some more catchy riffs, and some nice singing from Chino. Other standouts include the title track, "Ihabia", "Rickets" "Lotion", "Dai the Flu", and "Headup" (featuring guest vocals from Max Cavalera). Hey every song is a winner in my book. If you're a fan of Deftones, metal, hard rock, or if you're just a dude with an open mind like me, "Around the Fur is a must have. Peace Out!!
Jeremy's song ratings:
1. My Own Summer (Shove It) - 10/5 My favorite song
2. Ihabia - 5/5
3. Mascara - 5/5
4. Around the Fur - 5/5
5. Rickets - 5/5
6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) - 5/5
7. Lotion - 5/5
8. Dai the Flu - 5/5
9. Headup - 5/5
10. MX - 5/5
P.S. Forget Limp Bizkit. Chino pawns Fred Durst anytime.
The album that started it off..........2006-10-11
Prior to the introduction of Around the Fur, the hardest music I probably listened to would have been Faith No More. I had been a fan of hard rock since I was a kid but never much dug the metal scene. That was until I listened to this album....
By no means an all out metal album, it is however absolutely brutal (I mean that in a good way) at times! It drips emotion and energy like nothing I had ever heard. And woven within all the brutality is not only well written songs but songs with terrific melody. Its tough to even use the word melodic when speaking about Around the Fur because of its intensity and heaviness but its there. It was likely the reason I stuck with the album and later grew to consider it one of my all-time favorite albums.
The album starts off with the first single, My Own Summer, a hard hitting, energetic number, a great opening track. Stephen's signature crunching riffs continue on Lhabia, my favorite track from the album. And it continues throughout the album.... Other highlights include the title track, Dai the Flu, Lotion and Be Quiet..., the second single from the album. There is no real weak track on this album and the intensity never wains, even at quieter moments, for the duration of the album. By the end of it you feel like you've just climbed the stairs of the Empire State Building.... its exhausting and exhilerating at the same time.
This album came along at a dark time in my life and it could not have been better to blow off some of the pain and frusteration I was feeling at the time. A terrific album by an extremely talented band, a must for any love of hard hitting and aggressive music.

An Extremely Kick-Butt Album.......2002-06-28
Deftones are one of the few bands in the newer-metal/rock scene that actually have creativity among various other talents that add to their music. They are one of the better bands out there, for they stay true to their music and write about meaningful topics, unlike the other rock bands out there that are just looking for fame and ho's. I say that this album and adrenaline are their best works. Other bands to check out that are great like the Deftones are : System of a Down, Primus, Coal Chamber, Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, Led Zeppelin, and Cradle of Filth. If you like Deftones, you will not be disappointed with these other bands.
BEST RECORD EVER!.......2001-12-08
This is my favorite record of all time......the deftones capture every possible emotion on this album, and it's nice to know, no matter what's going on, Around the Fur is the answer. There is pain, frustration, heartbreak, guilt, self rightousness, as well as confusion, love, and joy on this record. Abe's drumming is outstanding, and Chino singing-to-screaming 1-2 punch is the best in music. If I could only have 1 CD for the rest of my life, Around the Fur would do the job!
Deftones are AWESOME!!!.......1999-09-29
I bought this cd about 3 months ago, and i haven't stopped listening to it since then. Around the Fur is AMAZING.
DEFTONES ARE aWESOME!!.......1999-04-08
When I first heard it I was surprised at how hard it could get and then instantly get soft and quiet. Chino is a great singer. If you like hard rock, this is for you.
the best album icould have ever bought.......1999-02-13
The deftones are just straight awesome. Comparing them to Korn and limp bizkit is like comparing steak and horse manure they blow everyone else out of the water. They are the truest form of adrenaline on cd I've ever heard. Anyone who thinks that this album isn't excellent well I got two words for them. "Shove It". I can't wait for their next jams to come out.
