I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

First... a request to people reviewing stage cast albums, Several reviews refer to these recordings as "soundtracks."

WRONG!!!!

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

I can't wait to get my CD in the mail. Yesterday and
Today was one of the bands I got to see 30 or 40 times at clubs in SF back in the 70's. Ya, I was there on Broadway and who can forget the Old Waldorf days...oh yes. I was a teenager then, but we rocked hard and they were & still are my favorite band from that era. Their early releases to me were the best. I had many front table seats and I remember chanting Y & T...which is where that name came from...we named them...they rocked us. I will never forget...They ended almost every set with Beautiful Dreamer as I recall...ya I was pretty hammered by that time...but that is what I remember. These guys are the best ever rock band from the bay area. Thanks Dave, Joey (who I hear is doing much better now), Leonard and Phil for so many good memories. ;-)

As often mentioned ,Y&T were always criminally under-rated. Their 1st 5 albums were Early American blues based Heavy Metal staples. not too many bands can put together 5 consecutive killer albums as these guys did from the mid 70's to the early 80's. Sadly the emergence of Fluff metal and Record company bullsH#@% victimized this band as the 80's came to an end. But their glory today is due to those 1st 5 albums.
This compilation focuses on albums 3.4 and 5. Y&T's "heavy 3" Earthshaker, Black Tiger and Meanstreak. 11 of the 16 tracks are from those 3 albums. also a couple off of the 2 that followed. Would actually have been nice to have "Dont stop Runnin" on here from IRWT. But that aside, this best of is almost Flawless and the insert includes an intro from Brian Slagel (founder of Metal Blade Records) who is quite a fan of the band.

During their four-year stint at A&M records, Y&T created a unique sound that combined hard-rock and blues-rock styles from Texas, Detroit, California, the Southeast, England, the Pacific Northwest, and the Great Plains states into a heavy metal sound that was far less negative than Ratt, Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, Guns N' Roses, and many other 80s bands. The only bands of that era to match Y&T as far as talent was concerned were Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Whitesnake, Europe, Van Halen, and Def Leppard. While ULTIMATE COLLECTION covers a longer time frame, this contains more early songs, so get both and you'll have all the Y&T you really need.

Overlooked and underrated by critics and radio in America and it's a damn shame. At least I know that I'm not the only one
who knows how great this band was and is! Glad they came back.
I can't wait to see them again. I saw the farewell tour in L.A. and I was blown away. Dave Meinketti is one of the greatest
guitarist in rock history and blows the competion away. This
album rocks with some of their best songs but of course I
say get them all! One of my favorite bands of all time!!

I grew up with these guys,born and raised in San Francisco. Ca.The Sunset District!!!! This album Rocks from A-Z!!!All the songs jam!! Dave voice stands alone & playing his 'G'top notch man, Leonard on drums pure magic!!! Joey is awesome!! Phil on bass what can i say but deep!Y&T are my favorite rock band of all time! I tattoo my arm back in "85 to prove it!!! One last thing i agree about they deserve better,people talk about other rock bands,but to me and many other Y&T fans the are number #1 FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get this item and I can say is great, if you really want to get an idea about the vienna boys choir's work, you have to get this, you can admire the soloist voice, Emanuel Cencic, he has an outstanding voice, principally the track "let the bright querubin" but in general is a great compilation, you can stop listening.

    I am an old curmudgeon, and I bought the import version of "Fool Around" when it first came over the pond, pressed on "virgin" white vinyl. I loved it then and I love it now. But there is a GREAT song called "Girl with a Synthesizer" that is absolutely astonishing. It may have not made it onto the U.S. version of "Fool Around" as I remember the track listing changed.

    Often dismissed, Rachel Sweet's career produced many excellent songs that deserve better recognition. Perhaps the best, missing from this collection, is "Truck Stop Queen:" one of the most quirky, interesting tracks to come out of the '70's. It belongs to a list of great, unheard songs that, due to ill-promotion (managerial and recording company ineptitude, really), the public has little or no opportunity to enjoy.

    What a find! Up until now, the only copy I had was a hissing cassette tape. Spellbound is such a brilliant song and her version of The Velvet Underground's Pale Blue Eyes is fantastic. My absolute favorite cut is her energetic version New Rose. Foul Play is also very cool. The variety of styles on this work makes it a delight. Her phrasing is unique and she can really belt a tune as well as purr. Rachel Sweet is a treasure. It may not be for everyone as the arrangements are not what today's pop music sounds like, but if you like Pat Benatar and Patsy Cline you might want to give this a try.

    This latest "Best Of" Rachel Sweet compilation is unique in that it contains a couple of seldom heard arrangements, such as the jazzier sound present on "Pin A Medal On Mary."

    For anyone who is a fan of Rachel and her incomparable talent, this CD is a definite "must have."

    I strongly suggest you pick up a copy!
