Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15
Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.
Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.
Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.
Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.
However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.
Great circus music.......2005-08-12
I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.
Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19
It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.
Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07
Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.
Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12
This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

The only Slapshot CD you need to buy........2007-05-05
Classic straight edge hardcore from 'back in the day' Songs like 'Ive had enough' are just as much straight edge classics as Youth of Todays 'we just might' The tracks 'Hang up your boots' and 'No guts no glory' are what Stars and Stripes should have sounded like instead of that damn awful Whitesnake sounding pile of you know what.
Dont know about the later stuff and quite frankly dont want to know. This is the only Slapshot stuff worth listening to.
Would be four and a half, but considering your options..........2006-02-08
This CD would get four and a half stars, just for all the classics songs that are on it. Problem is, the production value, while not terrible, lacks punch, and the recording volume is very low. However, Slapshot's 2002 release, Slashes and Crosschecks, has all of the standout tracks from this album: "I've Had Enough," "No Friend of Mine," "Step on It," "Hang Up Your Boots," "No Time Left," and "In Your Face," plus 16 other awesome Slapshot tracks. Not only that, but the SAC tracks are rerecorded and remastered and, to my ears, completely blow away the originals. You also get digital versions of live performances. I'm not knockin' Step On It, it's a great album, but considering what you can get on Slashes and Crosschecks for the same amount of dough, you're better off buying SAC.
In your face !.......2003-09-08
Another classic of the boston hardcore scene. Slapshot is simply a great band who gives during these 14 songs to its listeners, energy, faith, and more.
It's old school but, to my opinion, still valuable. A classic !
Kickin'est hardcore ever.......2002-02-01
Well, damn. Never heard of Slapshot? What rock have you had your head under?!? Slapshot is THE Boston hardcore band. This album represents their heyday, circa '86 to '88. These dudes used to play the Channel & you -would- get yer head stomped. These dudes put on some of the best shows I have ever seen. Buy it. Nuff said.
"Punks" that like Blink 182 will HATE slapshot..........2001-12-19
Forget the imitators, Slapshot is THE Boston straight edge band. Anyone currently on the American Nightmare jock, take note: these guys not only did it first, but they did it louder, faster and meaner. If you can listen to this album all the way through without stomping a hole in your living room floor, you need to go buy a Sum 41 record... er, cd.

Dad may spend too much time surfing the Web, swipe the remote, and snore, but when he straps on the Stratocaster, jump back--if he's Daddy a Go Go's John Boydston, that is. Together with Walt Brewer, a dad who drums, Boydston tears it up a third time on Big Rock Rooster, an album of '60s-esque jangly pop-rock that recalls everybody from Brian Wilson to John Fogerty to the Revolver-era Beatles. The paternal pair has matured a bit this go round--Rooster aims to rouse the 5- to 10-year-old crowd with tunes like "I Caught My Daddy Watching Cartoons" and the camp classic "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah." Consider it a graduation gift for kids who wore out their copies of Monkey in the Middle. Tucked into the originals, with their loopy, lifted-from-the-living-room lyrics, are parent-pleasers like the Partridge Family theme and the '50s bopper "Rag Mop." The straight-up sound is the thing, though. With surf licks, rockabilly riffs, and New Orleans grooves mixed into their musical stew, the Daddys continue to cook up some of the most energetic, accessible kids' music around. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Daddy a Go Go's "Big Rock Rooster" isn't for toddlers. It's not bad for them or anything, but if your child is 14.5 months old, like the child of the writer below, by all means check out The Wiggles and Barney or even Daddy a Go Go's first CD "Cool Songs for Cool Kids" which was named one of Amazon.com's Top 10 Best Kids CD of 1999.
"Big Rock Rooster" is for older kids, from 3 or 4 on up to 10, who are getting older and hip to rock and roll riffs you might hear on commercials or even classic rock radio stations. They like that stuff cause its fun, but maybe you don't want your kids listening to mainstream radio or watching TV all day just yet. "Big Rock Rooster" is a fun rock record with 12 original songs straight out of real life, like "I Can't Find My Shoes" or fun word-play songs like "Guitars on Mars" or "I Wanna Be an Action Figure."
Martin Keller wrote a great little review of this CD in the Minneapolis Star Tribune: "You gotta love the brains and instruments behind Daddy a Go Go -- John Boydston, a former CNN producer and current stay-at-home dad who came of age in rock's golden era and is now trying to re-create it for kids. He does it with his original songs, groaner pop culture puns, smart covers and ripping guitar lines. Playing everything but drums, Boydston shows he's as much in touch with his and your kids as he is with patented '60s guitar hooks. This CD is a righteous follow-up to his first two discs. Daddy a Go Go proves again that he's one of kids-music's rockin'-est rulers."
And Tower Records' PULSE gave "Big Rock Rooster" a 4 star review: "Big Rock Rooster rips! Daddy A Go Go a.k.a. John Boydston, isn't afraid to rock out (and I mean really rock out in a grungy, garage band sort of way) and he does so with such spirit and good graces that he offends the sedate sensitibilies of neither parent nor child. (Think nuances of the Beatles and the Who toned down to meet the needs of today's busy nuclear family.) Daddy A Go Go's brand of rock 'n' roll is simple and nostalgic with smart retakes (unlike the original, Daddy A Go Go's version of the Partridge Family's "Come On, Get Happy" manages to avoid sounding sappy) mingled with originals."
Customer Reviews:
A disappointment: falls short of previous two efforts.......2004-11-30
If you are looking for guitar-driven, garage band style children's music then, then Daddy a Go Go just might fit the bill. Parents who are fans of the Beatles, surf guitar, the Byrds; or, even REM, Camper van Beethoven, Flaming Lips, the Misfits, etc., will likely find Daddy a Go Go a refreshing change from Barney, the Wiggles, Raffi, and other commercially popular children's artists. However, if you're new to Daddy a Go Go, I'd recommend buying either of their first two albums, *Cool Songs For Cool Kids* or *Monkey In The Middle*, instead of *Big Rock Rooster*.
*Big Rock Rooster* was somewhat of a disappointment. After listening to the song samples, I decided to borrow the CD from the library before buying it. We listened to the album at least once a day for about 3-4 weeks, in rotation with the previous two Daddy a Go Go CDs. I really tried to like the album, and--although we love Ralph's World--initially took with a grain of salt any negative comparisons to Ralph's World.
My now 14.5 month-old son, husband, and I enjoy the first two albums very much, especially the instrumentals and cover tunes. The only exception is the Pokemon themed song, "The Fever," which already seems dated after 4 years--and therein lies the weakness of this third Daddy a Go Go album.
To mangle David St. Hubbins' quote in *This is Spinal Tap*: "It's a fine line between clever and corny." Original and creative songs like "Monkey in the Middle" and "You're Not the Bossa Nova Me" (from the second album) are noticeably absent on *Big Rock Rooster*. Instead, you have songs like "I Caught My Daddy Watching Cartoons" and "Nice Mare on Elm Street," which are loaded with youth pop culture references.
Granted, as indicated on the back cover, this album is geared towards an older age group (ages 5-10) than the previous two Daddy a Go Go CDs. However, I think it's possible to write songs for children without resorting to gimmickry. Herewith lies Ralph's World and Brady Rymer's advantage (better studio production and musicianship aside): their songs are witty, performed in various musical styles, and near-timeless. Although Daddy a Go Go does cover some themes or topics in their songs that are universal to children (e.g., "It's Hard to Be a Kid," "Brush Your Teeth," I Can't Find My Shoes"), the surf/garage guitar twang and limited vocal range can seem tedious after repeated listenings; and, the more gimmicky lyrics will unlikely hold up to the passage of time.
Nonetheless, Daddy a Go Go's home studio recorded albums can still have a place in your family's music collection; you just may eventually find yourself reaching for them less often, compared to other, more accomlished children's artists.
A MUST HAVE FOR FUN DADDY-KID TIME.......2004-04-24
This CD is a must have. The lyrics are funny and enjoyable and the music is fun for grown ups to groove too. It is recommended for 5-10 year olds but my 8 month old loves to dance around to it and of course fly around to "I want to be an action figure."
Don't miss this CD. It is a fresh sound to keep the kids having fun and the parents sane with some good old rock.
I can't wait for the new one.
Rockin Kids Music.......2004-04-23
What a great cd for kids! The entire collection is a must have. My 3 year old loves them all! He was recently interviewed and when asked what his favorite song was he responded with an excited "Superheroes" - his name for "I Wanna Be An Action Figure". He also insisted on ordering all the cds for a friend's birthday gift and wow what a hit!
Disappointed -- mediocre vocals and (too) jangly guitar.......2004-04-20
I really wanted to love this CD, especially after all the positive reviews for Daddy a Go Go, including comparisons to the Beatles Revolver era.
Yikes. Not so.
If you can tolerate mediocre singing, a non-stop jangly guitar, C-level back-up musicians, and not-so-clever lyrics, you might be OK with this CD. It does have a bit of a country sound to it -- maybe country music fans will like it more than I do.
I was especially looking forward to "Come on Get Happy" (cover of Partidge Family), but Daddy a Go Go's version is almost unrecognizable as the same song.
I'm just really disappointed with it. I'm taking it to work with me today and offering it to anyone who wants it for free.
I'm going to stick with Ralph's World.
Happy Music.......2002-04-09
This CD is wonderful! The Big Rock Rooster piece is so fun it should go on forever. Rag Mop is better than the original. Don't miss this CD, if you have children or not.

Lucid dreaming? .......2007-02-13
Oh, please! I guess it depends on your idea of dreaming.
If you enjoy dozing off with the electric blender on high, then you've gotta place this in your bedroom.
Seriously -- the musicianship is highly competent, and there is an obvious commitment to the entire production. But this CD is not dreamy.
The album title nails it: "Rhythmic FISSION -- digital revisions of classic trax."
A Dreamy Listening Experience.......2004-06-01
This music is ideal accompaniment for lucid dreaming...Some of the tracks are loud, fast, and flashy ("Chasing Bartok" track #1, "Machines" track #10 come to mind) while others are fragile and soothing ("Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito"). Any one of these songs would be a superb compliment to a movie soundtrack--they all have this movie-dream-type quality to them, whether the movie/dream is creepy, beautiful, sad, or just plain experimental electronic music. Tracks 12-14 are heavy on vocals: Track 12 is very similar to the enigma song "Beyond the Invisible", while "I would Kiss You" makes me think of Loreena McKennitt with a dash of techno-renaissance flair, and finally "New World" has its good moments, but sounds a bit Disney-esque. "Addio Del Passato" and "Espirito" are the best tracks on the whole album; they sound like the ideal Anne Rice movie soundtrack selections, with "Addio" serving for any goth-vampire-opera-or-nightclub scenes, and "Espirito" for any childhood flashback scenes (hey, that's just what it sounds like!)...
If you've heard the "Verve Remixed" CDs, then I highly recommend buying this CD as well to help balance out your jazz with some classical. Plus the music is brand-spankin' new. So give this CD a chance.

Customer Reviews:
If you can only buy one ska CD today, this oughtta be it!.......1999-02-04
If you can only buy one ska cd today, this oughtta be it! This definitive CD sampler from Orange County's Ska Parade radio show is dy-no-mite! I'm buying another copy of it, because it was so cool, someone stole my copy when I left it at work. This packed CD features Sublime when they were still a ska band as well as hilarious promos featuring (no kidding) The Jerky Boys, Mr. T. And Mindy's Dad from the lovably wack t.v. show Mork & Mindy. This is one of the most versatile CD's I have owned- even people who don't know much about ska love the catchy riffs and infectious grooves.
THE BEST SKA COMP!!! (ALONG W/ "RUNNIN' NAKED..." CD).......1999-02-02
The Ska Parade has been the backbone of "3rd Wave Ska" & other genres. "Step On It..." is cuttin' edge & captures the raw energy and personality of the bands. The exclusive, live Sublime songs on this cd were the catalyst for Sublime's success! One of my favorite cds along w/ the "The Ska Parade: Runnin' Naked Thru The Cornfield" cd. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION - BUY BOTH COMPS!!!!!!!!

True SoCal flavor! Orange, Riverside, and LA county bands rock on this CD: some old school, some new. Check out Ocean 11, Sublime, The Skeletones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and Skankin' Pickle. If you like ska, and want release from many of the bubble-gum sounding ska bands out now, pick this up.
