How clichéd--make that calcified--has the concept of "irony" become in alternative music? When North Carolina's Squirrel Nut Zippers scored an unlikely late '90s hit with "Hell" (from their Hot album), many cynics (and a few critics) thought the band was merely mocking the hot jazz stylings of the '20s and '30s. But having put a couple more albums and some trying times (the defection of singer-guitarist Tom Maxwell and passing of horn player Stacy Guess) under their belts, it's clear that musical affection was no mere passing affectation. The Zippers have honed both their chops and their courage here, with subtle new influences from the 20th-century American musical pantry (a dash of country, a pinch of Spanish guitar, more Crescent City bump) tastefully simmered into the stew. Katherine Whalen's vocal turns are as convincingly smoky as the lighthearted material is jokey--an inviting balance that's equally true to its historical sources. More than mere opportunistic swing revivalists, the restless curiosity displayed on this album argues that the Zippers are in it for the long haul. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but this band is clearly more interested in inspiration, and that's not a bad compliment, either. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Historic CD introduced a whole new generation to jazz.......2007-07-19
What can I say about the Zippers that hasn't been said? When I first heard "Hot" I got the CD and spoke to my father in law about the old big band songs. I know several other people have done the same.
The Zippers is music you can listen to with your kids, your father in law, anyone who likes good rhythm and talented music.
Is "Hot" worth buying enhanced? I think so. I can put it in the changer next to the old version and there are some subtle differences.
They're not like CPD so get over it already!.......2007-04-12
Oh, for crying out loud: They're not supposed to be like Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Apples and oranges, people. Related, but not the same genres. Compare them to Hot Club of Cowtown, maybe, but not CPD.
I like the original 1920's-1940's stuff better, but that's a matter of personal taste and not a judgment call. SNZ aren't supposed to be carbon-copies of that era so it doesn't really matter that they aren't purely swing or purely jazz or purely any given decade. They're fun. They do what they do, well. Lighten up and dance!
Splendid!.......2007-03-21
Katherine Whalen does a grat job at "Put a lid on it".
This album is one for the cruising!
The simple rythm and the meltdown in the mix is fabulous.
Great job!
Hot is cool!.......2007-03-11
This CD definitely isn't for everyone, but if you like jazz and are looking for something truly unique and downright fun, it could be for you. The vocals may take a few minutes to get used to (the lead singer, Katharine Whalen, is kind of a cross between Billie Holiday and a 1920s-era flapper, and the other vocalists can hardly be accused of being mainstream either). With plenty of entertaining lyrics, Dixieland brass and unorthodox instruments (chandeliers and baritone ukeles to name a couple), this is a CD I can listen to over and over again (and believe me, I have) without ever getting tired of. The song "Hell" is without doubt the most raucously fun song I've ever heard, but every song is a blast of fresh air.
Fun and Off the Wall!.......2007-01-19
Just one of the most fun and interesting recordings available. The improvisations border at times on the psychedelic. It's relaxed, or intense. Just great music!

On Music for Two, banjo wizard Béla Fleck and stand-up bass maestro Edgar Meyer effortlessly sail through a challenging program that includes compositions by Bach, a sonata by Henry Eccles, a Miles Davis tune, and a number of self-composed finger twisters. The amazing thing about this varied selection is not its eclecticism--which is only to be expected with these two--but that it all blends together so seamlessly. Fleck's jazz-tinged compositions (like "The Lake Effect") and Meyer's bluegrass-inspired tunes (like "Wishful Thinking") sit so comfortably next to Bach's baroque jewels and Davis's cool jazz that it makes you question the entire of concept of musical classification. (In fact, the Bach preludes, inventions, and partitas translate so well to the banjo/bass arrangements, you have to wonder if old JSB might not have had a bit of bluegrass in his soul.) Music for Two was recorded live at a series of 2001 concerts, where Fleck and Meyer proved conclusively that the banjo and the bass were capable of remarkable subtlety and not just twang and boom. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
A Must Have.......2007-04-25
These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.
Broad Spectrum Virtuosity.......2007-04-23
This album runs the gamut of styles and genre. It is hard to get bored when a musical turn is but a few notes away. The two musicians integrate their instruments with incredible skill. I hate to give it a four star rating. The music is worth the 5. The loooooong, live applause tracks detract from the album. The asides by the musicians are sometimes hard to hear. Minor aggravations aside, this album plays frequently, very frequently, in our home, car, iPods, etc.
Cool Pairing for Meyer/Fleck Fans.......2007-01-02
I've seen both Edgar Meyer and Bela Fleck live (unfortunately not together) and I really think this album just captures the magic of their live shows: I can almost see them in my living room together! For those not so familiar with the music of one or both the inclusion of classical tunes with those composed by Meyer/Fleck and other contemporary songwriters is a cool drink of water. Music for Two is a good intro to the world of cozy bluegrass.
Bela Fleck + Edgar Meyer = strange mixture .......2006-11-10
Bela Fleck is one of the my jazz favorites... And hi with combination called Edgar Meyer are... great music!!!
Virtuosity Knows No Musical Boundaries.......2006-10-22
Béla Fleck & Edgar Meyer are both extraordinarily accomplished musicians who spend much of their time in very different worlds: Fleck in his newgrass space and Meyer in a more classical mode. But each has travelled in the other's territory before, and on this CD they connect around more genres than you can shake a stick at. In addition to their own compositions they tackle many of their joint favorites. The affection shows in the passion of the playing and the obvious camaraderie. And the accompanying DVD is a treat. Don't miss this one.

Sweet, young sounds.......2007-05-20
Reminiscent of the voice of the early albums of the Sundays, the singer in Frente must positively bounce when she sings. Lovely fun music that never becomes whinny or down.
Not as I remembered..........2007-05-14
I loved this album when it first came out, and after many years without it, I ordered the CD. It's not quite as good as I remembered it (the songs are very mellow, and more "folksy" that I remembered), but there are a couple of songs I still enjoy, and, well, it just brings back nice memories of college!
I Never Thought Life Could Be So Sweet!.......2007-02-20
From the beautiful opener to the excellent cover of Bizarre Love Triangle at the end this is a wonderful album full of mellow catchy songs. I think of it as an album to listen to late at night because of the enchanting quality and Angie Hart's vocals but it has some upbeat songs and makes for great listening anytime. The only misstep on the album is when the guys sing parts on a couple of songs. They are not bad singers but Angie's vocals are so joyful to hear that you wish they weren't cutting in. Those aren't bad songs though, in fact there isn't a bad song on this album, and some are absolutely stunning. No doubt to me this was one of the best albums of the nineties. I've been lucky to have these songs bouncing around in my head for over a decade now, my life has definitely been sweeter as a result. If you haven't been so lucky I suggest you start making up for lost time.
Great Album and Great Buy.......2007-01-21
I first heard this album when it was released in 1992. My friends and I enjoyed singing every single song with and without the album playing in the background. I purchased this album for nostalgic purposes, yes, but also to hear the lovely voice of Angie Hart, the upbeat melodies and the variations in songs making this early album an excellent buy.
Still love it!.......2006-12-09
I bought this album in 1994 and is just amazing how I can still enjoy these songs after all these years. Their other album, 'Shape' is just as great too I was surprised at that. All these songs are on my ipod now and ofcourse I don't listen to them all the time but when traffic gets jammed here in Los Angeles which is everyday, sometimes I put their music and is like being on a cruise instead of being stuck on the 101. I don't even want to arrive home at times just so I could listen to more songs :P

Recorded over a year before its release and put on hold thanks to the phenomenal ride of 1996's Hot, their third release is where the jazz-hoppin' Squirrel Nut Zippers separate from the rest of the nostalgic Voodoo Cherry Daddy pack. Perennial Favorites covers a lot of ground: aching balladry ("Low Down Man," complete with pedal steel and intoned lovingly by chanteuse Katharine Whalen), hilarious show-tune homages ("Ghost of Stephen Foster"), romping props to the past ("Pallin' with Al," a nod to guitarist Al Casey). Thanks to imaginative arrangements, "The Kraken" and "My Drag" transcend retro hipness to forge unique sonic paths. "Suits Are Picking Up the Bill," a zingy diatribe on capitalism, may not turn out to be a smash hit like the earlier "Hell," but these Favorites should endure. --Don Harrison
Customer Reviews:
Truly a blast from start to finish!!!.......2007-05-25
I have been a fan of the Zippers since I first saw the video for "Hell" on MTV...back when they still played videos! It is very sad to know that they have disbanded and we will never hear another album from these fine performers. It was never fair that they got lumped into the same category as some of the "swing revival" bands that came about in the mid to late 90's because not only were they better than any of those bands, in my opinion, but they were also so much more than a "swing band". I always felt they covered the whole gambit of popular music (even if they did it with help form their Granddaddies record collection!), while at the same time adding just enough of the peculiar and absurd to make the music sound fresh. In other words, their music sounds very familiar, yet you've never quite heard anything like it before...if that makes any sense! But one things for sure, if you're ever having a party, even if it's just a family gathering, pop in one of their CD's and you will have people tapping their feet and asking you for the name of the group in no time!
I own all of their albums, including the spectacular "Christmas Caravan", and listen to all of them frequently (especially once the summer BBQ's start happening!), but I find myself coming back to Perennial Favorites the most often. Each of their albums would get 5 stars from me, hands down (even Bedlam Ballroom grew on me after a few listens), but there is something about this one that makes me want to pop it in the stereo and blast my speakers on a more regular basis! My favorite track has got to be "The Ghost Of Stephen Foster"! With the bands frantic playing, Jimbo's possessed vocals, and the great Andrew Bird's goosebump inducing fiddle playing, this track is one of my all-time favorites by the band. It's in fact Jimbo Mathus who leaves the biggest impression on me with this album. His inspired and raucous vocals, as well as his clever lyrics, (although I'm still unsure what, "If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk much faster!" is supposed to mean...but I love it anyway!), are at the helm of many of my favorite songs on this album. Including the drunken late night wail of "That Fascinating Thing"...I'm telling you, give your friends a few cocktails and blast that song, I promise they'll all be swaying to the music in no time...a band has to be really good to sound that sloppy! Katherine is exquisite as always, and Tom Maxwell's sense of humor and peculiar lyrics, as well as his unique voice, are yet another highlight of this wonderful album...his screaming proclamation, "If you draw a bow draw the strongest. Yes!!! And if you use and arrow use the longest!", is my favorite moment of the great track "Soon". And "Trou Macacq" is a fantastic song about the trials and tribulations of becoming a successful band..."We became the monkeys riding the race."
By the time the album comes to it's end, with the aptly titled "It's Over", I find myself exhausted because I inevitably have been dancing around the house throughout the whole thing...yet I don't want the music to end! But alas, like the band says, "Just when you think the parties starting, it's over...."
One of the hardest jazzalbums ever!.......2007-03-21
Funny ulbum. Easy to listen to, but beware! Dont digg to deep, because it's really very advanced. Straight thru a likeable album.
My favorite album by my favorite band!.......2006-10-10
I cannot express how much I enjoy the Squirrel Nut Zippers and their unique, enchanting brand of delightful swing/jazz reminiscent of the F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald/Roaring 20s generation.
What other reviewers have stated in praise of this album goes for myself as well -- it's just a great mix of the "the sacred and the profane", with slow rhythmic numbers neatly balanced by toe-tapping dance tunes.
What saddens me is that the S.N.Z.s are defunct and no other band from the Neo-Swing Revivial era of the early 1990s comes close (in my estimation) to delivering so wonderful a sound. Fellow Zipperheads, ROLL ON!!!
pretty good stuff.......2006-07-22
this is a good CD by The Squirrel Nut Zippers. It combines hot jazz, western swing, torch songs, and also has elements of traditional music, dixieland, klezmer, and a bit of tango thrown in, to boot. The vocals at times sound a bit Billie Holliday-ish, and the arrangements are pretty good.
Hot 1920s, 30s, and 40s jazz/swing done RIGHT!.......2005-06-21
Dusting off this, my first Squirrel Nut Zippers album, today and blasting it in my car, I was reminded of how brilliant Perennial Favorites actually is. It captures the essence of a time and place, both modern and nostalgic, that is always refreshing to revisit when current 21st century radio, or life for that matter, suddenly becomes dull and commonplace. Perhaps it is singer/banjoist Katharine Whalen's warbled Billie Holiday-esque vocals, or the fierce horn section amidst the thumping drums that dares the listener to sit still. Resisting the urge to dance ultimately becomes a losing battle as Perennial Favorites progresses, probably due in part to the fact that the album sounds like it was recorded in someone's living room or garage. If nothing else, that live, spur of the moment feel is one aspect that makes Perennial Favorites so wonderful.
Many more factors probably play into my immense enjoyment of this album, such as the vivid locales of smoky dance halls it conjures in my imagination and the vintage "seed packet" art direction, but regardless of those, Perennial Favorites simply contains great jazz/swing infused music. While there are no recognizable covers of time worn standards, a few tracks worth noting are: the dreamy "Low Down Man," the romping "Pallin' With Al," the oddly infectious "Trou Macacq," the sultry "My Drag," and the up beat, "Evening at Lafitte's." This album is definitely one of the best offerings from the Squirrel Nut Zippers small discography, and is thankfully still in print. Pick up a copy today and you'll be a fan in no time!

Maybe the founding members of Squirrel Nut Zippers (Jim Mathus and Katharine Whalen) were predicting the giant sucking-sound that would follow grunge when they decided to toss away their rock bands, move from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to a small town nearby, and pick up banjos and trumpets in 1993. Whatever it was that motivated the pair--plus the other quartet of guys who became the Zippers--to shun the pervasive crunchy power-pop-punk sound of Chapel Hill, it's worked out well for them; since the 1995 release of the band's debut, The Inevitable, kids all over the country have been pogo-ing to swing music. While The Inevitable isn't charting super-fresh musical territory, the Zippers' vivacious take on the Big Band sound of the 1920s and '30s has the nutty appeal of a vintage dress worn with Doc Martens. --Megan O. Steintrager
Customer Reviews:
Just more of what everyone else says.......2007-07-05
Being the backwards person I am, I got this CD last. You can see why the Zippers changed the paradigm with this one. It's definitely "Good Enough for Grandpa" and I believe the grandkids can swing along as well. As far as I'm concerned, their whole body of work is excellent and if you get a chance to see the Zippers live, you need to. Katherine Whalen is an amazing vocalist and the whole band just appears to be having a blast up on stage.
Zippers music is some of the best get-up-and-go music I know of. I use my swing mix to get me started on days when I know I need to get a lot done and keep moving.
What else can I say?.......2006-12-17
The Squirrel Nut Zippers are always amazing, and this album is no exception. Makes me want to dance every time I hear it.
Used to like it, 'til I heard it done better.......2004-01-07
I used to really like this recording, until I heard this style of music played by musicians of a higher calibre. There are plenty of modern masters who leave the SNZ's in their dust. Consider Bob Brozman. He deserves the recognition that the SNZ's have garnered, but his vastly superior recordings are mostly unknown. He did better version of You're Driving Me Crazy in 1988 on "The Devil's Slide, a record that the SNZ's have borrowed from (shamelessly, I think...their song "Hell" on the next record is a blatant ripoff of "Death" as performed by Brozman on "The Devil's Slide", right down to the faux spooky vocal). SNZ's are spirited, to be sure (if you ignore the fact that their lead singer has the charisma of a wet sock on stage) but they are so frankly derivative that it is hard to keep liking this recording after hearing more accomplished musicians tackle the same stuff with greater technique and fidelity to the period.
easily one of the best cds i've ever heard........2003-10-06
my first impression of the squirrel nut zippers, the Hot cd, was not an exciting one. i wasn't very into it, and ignored them for quite a while, until i finally heard some bits from this cd. i can't even begin to tell you how much i adore them now. katharine whalen has the most sensuous voice i've heard in years, and "wished for you" is such a gorgeous song that i can never just listen to it once. i always catch myself singing "good enough for granddad" and "you're driving me crazy". this cd is the best of both worlds- a few songs that really stand out, but overall, so well put together that you cannot skip a song. the lyrics are phenomenal, as are the musicians. if you're new to SNZ, i highly recommend you try this one first.
funky flashback.......2003-08-16
This CD is so muh fun to listen to. The lyrics are funky, the music is upbeat and you can tell they really have a great time creating their music. Unlike a lot of other modern swing bands, their creations are unique yet very authentic to the era from which they get their inspiration. I love squirrel nut zippers, but this is by far their best. I've owned it for 4 years, and I still play it as regularly as my newer CDs.

After hitting a creative peak in the early '90s, Los Lobos settled into a decade-long groove that was perhaps a little too comfortable. The band's twelfth studio CD, The Ride, tries to shake things up a bit, and mostly succeeds by pairing the group with a string of collaborators similar to Carlos Santana's Supernatural. Only instead of the young hit-makers that propelled Santana's comeback, The Ride matches Los Lobos with early influences (Bobby Womack, Little Willie G) and long-time friends (Dave Alvin, Elvis Costello).
The experimentalism that fueled 1992's Kiko can be found here on a couple of tracks--most notably "Kitate," a deliriously wiggy collaboration with Tom Waits and Martha Gonzales of Quetzal--but generally the focus is on blues, soul, and roots rock. Surprisingly, some of the strongest performances are new versions of songs previously recorded by Lobos: Costello helps the band re-invent "Matter of Time" as a piano and pedal-steel guitar ballad; Mavis Staples turns the folk-blues lament of "Someday" into rousing Stax soul/gospel; and Womack segues effortlessly from "Wicked Rain" into his '70s blaxploitation classic, "Across 110th Street." Of the newer material, the band shines brightest on "La Venganza de Los Pelados," a Latin dance workout with Café Tacuba, and the bluesy soul of "Chains of Love," which shreds 12-bar formula by including a 90-second violin solo. The latter is a tribute to '50s rock & rollers Don and Dewey, proving that the best road to the future is sometimes paved by revisiting the distant past. --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Los Lobos Hits the Mark Alone and with Great Guest.......2006-10-08
Excellent CD by the band featuring great songs and music that matches some of their best. Included are writing and singing collaborations by great artists like Mavis Staples, Elvis Costello, Tom Waites, Bobby Womack, Willie G., Richard Thompson, Ruben Blades, Martha Gonzalez and Cafe Tucuba. Elvis Costello sounds so rich in blusey in the appropriate "Matter of Time" he ought to give Perry Como a rest and hang with Los Lobos. My favorite is the poignant "Somewhere in Time" with the deep baritone voice of Dave Alvin alternating with David Hildago's crystal clear high tenor voice. It works extraordinary well and the lyrics are both haunting while gleaming with hope as indicated in the same below:
Another night, on a highway somewhere in time
Darkness plays those tricks on me
Far down the road in the shadows somewhere in time
Am I the man I'm supposed to be?
Hildago's vocal on "Rita" is just plainly beautiful along with Womacks soulful "wicked Rain". Wonderful with songs played and sung by just Perez, Rosas, Lozano, Hildago and Berlin but the collaborations with their guests make this an even deeper experience.
This C.D. is one of my " all time favorites".......2006-08-05
This might be one of "Los Lobos" BEST C.D.'s. The song, "Somewhere In Time", is an incredible musical arrangement and the vocals are "supreme". I highly recommend this C.D.
one of the most uniquely original bands....ever!.......2005-04-07
I must confess that I've been having one hell of a time trying to figure out which cd by these guys I should review. I own them all, and I find them all wonderful. I might be enjoying a distinct advantage over most people who don't own everything by Los Lobos, and I realize I'm also a bit biased because I love their material so much. To truly appreciate what these five guys do, have done, and are capable of, you'd simply have to be familiar with the band's entire catalog. Nobody is this diverse, and I'll stick my neck out here and make a brazenly heartfelt statement for the record.....Los Lobos is the most talented and engaging band in America.
They are also, at the same time, the most sadly underappreciated band of note that I can think of. You mention Los Lobos to most people and you'll either receive a blank stare in return, or get a response to the effect of, "oh yeah.....those guys who did "La Bamba" way back when....are they still around?" Makes my blood boil sometimes.....
But I digress. For those of us who are "in the know" concerning this fine band, we can take some solace in our enjoyment of one of the best kept secrets in music today. Based purely upon musical diversity, these guys are hella talented. Everything from traditional Mexican folk, blues, jazz, soul, rock, r&b, zydeco, middle eastern, to gospel is covered within The Wolves body of recorded music. These brilliant musicians have the heart, soul, and conviction to deliver all of the above with utmost style and unflinching adherence to what they ably achieve as a band, having performed together for the past thirty-plus years. It's obvious that David, Cesar, Conrad, Louie, and Steve have much respect for eachother on many levels, accomplishing what they have, and they still seem to love working together.... truly top-class professionals!
The reason I chose "The Ride", I suppose, is that it's basically their most recent release, and the one I've probably listened to the most over the past year. The boys saw fit to honor their respected musical contemporaries and influences alike with "The Ride", resulting in yet another totally unique piece to add to their catalog. I'll venture a guess that Los Lobos enjoyed making this record more than any other they've done. The talents and vocals of Ruben Blades, Bobby Womack, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, Tom Waits, and Mexico's Cafe Tacuba all feature prominently throughout "The Ride", and, in and of itself, lend this particular cd even more varied styles and sounds than we are accustomed to with a "typical" Los Lobos release. What's more, the band clearly had lots of fun with this experience and it comes through vibrantly in the end results.
Personal highlights on this disc, for me anyway, include the gospel-tinged beauty "Matter Of Time", which showcases fine vocal harmonizing by Elvis Costello and David Hidalgo. Richard Thompson figures in with "The Wreck Of The Carlos Rey", which for some reason reminds me of something from Fleetwood Mac's old "Bare Trees" album. It's catchy, bouncy and bluesy all at the same time......rather hard to describe. The drumming on this track is insanely good, really driving the entire thing. The track, "Is This All There Is?" is one of two Los Lobos compositions reworked from earlier records. This one had orginally appeared on 1987's "By The Light Of The Moon", and while I like the original a bit better(it's catchy as hell!), this new version features Little Willy G belting out a soulful reading of a new arrangement of the song. 1992's "Kiko" gets represented by Bobby Womack basically going crazy in a good way on "Wicked Rain", paired up with his own "Across 110th Street". These two songs really got a great treatment, as they blended very very well into a new arrangement. The original "Wicked Rain" was a great blues rocker, to be sure, but Womack's influence gives the song new life with a sensational blend of r&b and jazz. Guaranteed to get your toe tapping when cranked up!
As I said, a good time was obviously had between all musicians, and I'm sure Los Lobos will always treasure the experience of making this record with such great company. My personal favorite moments, however, come in the four tracks on "The Ride" in which the five Wolves did their own thing, sans guest appearances. Cesar Rosas' down and dirty blues, "Charmed", just plain rocks out. Man these guys are tight! Steve Berlin's sax intertwines with wicked blues guitar and piano, and Cesar's voice is just incredible for this type of song. Wow! I've got it blasting as I'm writing this, so forgive me for my pedestrian attempts at trying to convey this song's power through words.
"Rita", the final song I'll mention, is for me, quite literally the title track to "The Ride". It is a gentle, somewhat brooding cut, with perhaps the best lap steel playing I've ever heard. The reason I consider this the title track is simply due to the imagery the music, and especially the steel guitar, seem to emulate, in likeness to the beautiful sleeve photograph of the guys walking in procession with their instruments in tow through the arid landscape of what I'm assuming is a Southern California desert. Hidalgo's vocals are emotive as ever here, and the song conveys a warmth and open air feel to it that's just stunning!
It would be hard for me to singularly recommend any one Los Lobos cd for one's first purchase. They are so diverse, coupled with my glaringly obvious appreciation of everything they do, that my only suggestion would be to sample what you can, album by album. See what strikes you first and try it out. These little snippets of songs that we have at our disposal, courtesy of Amazon, are a good start. I'm not certain "The Ride" would be the best album to start with to become familiar with these guys, but for those Lobos fans out there who haven't heard this yet.....go get er!
"The Ride" is a blast of an album from a truly original American band!
Appreciation.......2005-03-03
Is it possible Cesar, Conrad, David, Louie and Steve keep getting better? Or is it just our growing appreciation for 30 years of sharing their music with us? Perhaps a little of both. How many other groups have been intact for three straight decades? No breakups or reunion tours or artistic lulls. Remarkable. Think of the artists who have done that and remained relevant. It's a short list.
"The Ride" again demonstrates how consistently great Los Lobos is. The album is an eclectic mix of song styles performed by a cadre of like-minded and equally talented collaborators. The playing is instinctually symbiotic like only 30 years together can provide. You must see them live for a better understanding of the joy. These are masters crafting beautiful art for our pleasure. A worthy addition to their already legendary catalogue. Buy the album and share the joy.
Los Lobos is an American treasure. Appreciate them, I do.
Go For The Ride.......2005-03-01
I heard of the los lobos from a friend recently, I really didnt think much of buying a record of los lobos until I sampled some of their music at fye. I really enjoyed the guitar playing David Hidalgo, who I discovered on the crossroads festival DVD, and he truely blew me away. He is pure talent in my opion. I really recomend this one to anybody looking for a great album. Their are some cool beats on this one. Hope you sample some of the music before you buy it. My favorites are Charmed, Somewhere In Time, and Chains Of Love. I think all of the songs are great to be honest. So dont wait go for the los lobos The Ride. Highly Recomened!

Not essential, but an ok sampler, but why not just get HOT.......2003-12-23
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the music on this cd, it is mostly "Hot jazz" and excitable dixieland music with the energy of a punk rock band! However there is no reason to acquire this cd at all, you should just buy thier cd "HOT," which has all of their hottest jazz sides, and best vocals, and the exciting trumpet solos of Duke Heighter. If after you buy HOT, and you need more, buy Perinnial Favorites, and that's all that is essential. This cd has a sampling of thier cd's, but this cd leaves off a bunch of essential tracks from thier exciting and creative HOT set, which is by far more essential. Only pick this up if you can get it at a low budget price, otherwise HOT should be easy enough to find at used cd shops in the USA, or Tower Records.
...and they are TASTY!.......2003-05-30
A hot jazz inspired band that brought back the wild abandon of 1920's and 1930's era music, the Squirrel Nut Zippers created some wonderfully original music and had a hit in 1997 with "Hell". This greatest hits collection was strangely difficult to find, but well worth the effort. This was my first SNZ disc and seemed like a good place to start. I was wrong, it was a perfect place to start. The Zippers approach their songs with infectious zeal. This album is consistently fun. As this collection moves more or less chronologically through their catalog, you really see how their musical style developed. From the rough-hewn Hot Jazz of "Good Enough for Grandad" and "Lover's Lane" to the lush parlor jazz of "Hush", the final track. The cd also includes a few unreleased tracks for the collectors (the Squirrel's previously unreleased cover of "Under the Sea" from The Little Mermaid is wonderful). "Hell" as well as some semi-hits "Ghost of Stephen Foster" and "Put a Lid On It" are here as well. SNZ were by no means slavish revivalists, their music was creative, original, witty and FUN. Plus you can dance to it. What more can you ask for? This is splendid stuff.

The Absolute Best Modern Jazz Band of the 1990s.......2002-12-31
I mean it when I call the Squirrel Nut Zippers that, although they bend the term "jazz" inside and out until they've broken ground in every single sub-genre of jazz. This best-of compilation, however, is an oddity. There's no mention of it on the band's official website (which hasn't been updated since February 2002). Nobody's reviewed it on Amazon.com or the All Music Guide. And since the Zippers only had one true hit ("Hell"), everything's free game in this collection.
This disc contains 18 cuts: three from their debut, "The Inevitable"; five from their breakthrough album, "Hot"; five from my favorite album, "Perrenial Favorites"; and three from their mainstream attempt, "Bedlam Ballroom". The two extra tracks are unreleased pieces recorded during the "Perrenial" sessions. The first new song is a caribbean cover version of the Disney song "Under the Sea", sung by the lovely and talented Katherine Whalen. The other song is "Dancing on the Moon", a bouncy ditty written by the Zippers' bassist, Don Raleigh.
As for the other tracks, the disc has, of course, the hit "Hell"; other favorites like "Put a Lid on It" and "Suits are Picking Up the Bill"; the wild "Ghost of Stephen Foster"; and the madcap percussion blowout "The Kracken". My favorite tracks are "Good Enough for Granddad", "Prince Nez", "Pallin' with Al" and "Bedbugs". Of course, me being such a avid fan, there are tracks I wish were on here ("Blue Angel" from "Hot" and "Evening at LaFitte's" from "Perrenial" just to name a few). Still, this disc is worth it for the two extra tracks and three music videos: "Hell" and two versions of "Put a Lid on It".
The Zippers still reign supreme and always will! Cheers!

A Unique Offering From an Equally Unique Band!.......2005-11-04
Great CD. My personal favorite from SNZ. An incredibly diverse assemblage of musical styles and influences. Complex arrangements and performances, but still manages to be melodic (it's very easy to catch yourself humming tunes from this CD out of no where).
I just hope that they can keep it up. The musical world desperately needs bands like this!
Bedlam Ballroom.......2005-08-10
This is as good of an CD as their others. The music is great for both swing dance and different slow dances. If you really enjoy various styles of music like I do this is worth purchasing.
hot diggity!.......2005-06-23
This probably isn't the Zippers' best CD, but it does have my favorite song in the world on it: Hush. It's a beautiful song with the most romantic string part I've ever heard (executed solely by the great Andrew Bird), and, in my opinion, it's today's greatest Gershwin-style ballad in existence.
Aside from the idiotic choice to put several seconds of an electronic beat at the beginning of "Bedbugs" (WHY, JIMBO? THAT AIN'T OLD-TIME MUSIC!), they're still just as jazzy as ever. However, I still stand by my belief that Perennial Favorites is their finest hour.
Good, not great.......2005-01-01
Well, I am a real fan of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and have all of their albums (except their live one). This one just didn't quite do it for me. FOr my money, HOT is track-for-track their best; it has an energy and a cohesion that none of their other albums have acheived. Which doesn't mean that the other albums are anything to shake a stick at. Even this album, with the fantastic opener "Bedbugs" and the playful "Missings Link", is a very good listen. The song "Hush" is probably their greatest ballad, and so lush you'd think it came from some great old movie. However, as a whole, I just didn't enjoy this album AS MUCH AS their others; but for a band as fun as the SNZ, their worst is still worth the price of the CD.
Influences Come From All Over.......2004-08-28
I never saw a contract or specification saying that the Squirrel Nut
Zippers had to play Dixieland or Swing, or any other kind of music on their albums. Like most other bands, they play what they feel compelled to play. On this particular CD they play
Southern-Influenced music that is not like previous albums. Some
record buyers want bands to turn out same-sounding records so that when they listen to them there is no thinking involved. But
if an artist is allowed to express himself, or herself, wonderful
things can happen--like on this album. A little bit of R&B or
Rockabilly can be expected in Southern-influenced music. And there have been a lot of great Rockabilly groups to be influenced by over the years. Some of
the music here reminds me of Brave Combo (a band with no hint of
sticking to any genre, but still play great entertaining music.)
Bedlam Ballroom has the same great musicians as all the other
albums they have done. Maybe their next one will be like the
older ones, maybe it will be something completely different.
Variety, they say, is the spice. This CD is a great listen.
Buy it and grow. Or not. It's your cash.

Long before they became American rock legends and Grammy favorites, Los Lobos (or rather Los Lobos del Este de Los Angeles--the Wolves of East Los Angeles--as they were then known) turned a faithful musical tutelage by their parents' Mexican folk music records into a steady stream of gigs at parties, weddings, and what was then a career plateau--a regular engagement at a Mexican restaurant. They also invested in this long out-of-print 1978 independent recording of the best of their all-acoustic traditional Mexican repertoire of that time. Perhaps prophetic of the fusion to come, they named themselves after a popular Tex-Mex group, Los Lobos del Norte, but titled the LP in a good-natured nod to Frank Zappa. Though light years from the experimentation of Kiko and Colossal Head, this collection nonetheless exudes a dedication, soul, and sheer musicality that will be instantly familiar to Lobos admirers. Especially in tackling chestnuts such as "Cielito Lindo" (here quickly segueing from typically sloppy party favorite into a fresh, intricate arrangement in a heartbeat) and "Guantanamera" (in a traditional, rhythmically compelling guajira), the Lobos can't resist some loving musical tweaking. More than just the roots of a modern legend, this is truly music from the heart. --Jerry McCulley

Great CD.......2007-01-14
My students sing along to this CD as they do art projects. Great versions of Cielito Lindo and others. I love this CD.
10 Years before "La Bamba".......2006-12-30
In 1987 Los Lobos became worldwide known thanks to the title song
of the movie "la Bamba" inspired in the life of the first hispanic
Rock & Roll star Ritchie Valens who had a big hit with it in 1958/59.
It was Ritchie's idea to record a typical Mexican folk song from Veracruz
and launch it on the market against the will of everybody. It would
become one of the most popular songs ever and recorded by hundreds of
different artists in the past fifty years. Los Lobos' version made it to
number 1 for 3 consecutive weeks. Ten years earlier these guys recorded
a number of traditional Mexican songs like La Bamba called "Just another band
from East L.A." whose original tapes have been recuperated in 2000.
What a treasure! Beautiful songs from ranchera to bolero and from
jarocho to a traditional Bolivian and Cuban song. An incredible band
still making great music today as Los Lobos or taking part in projects or groups
like the wonderful Los Super Seven.
Incredible guitar work .......2004-10-22
This album consists of all tradional-style songs, which were recorded before the band's rise to fame. Songs showcase the incredible talent of Los Lobos, making what is kinda cheesy music sound really cool. I also recomend "This Time", a little more garage rock influenced, but also with some folk-songs on it.
Musico Mexicano con SOUL!!.......2003-01-05
Without a doubt this collection of Los Lobos
songs are fabulous. I have given this CD to family and friends
and their reaction was the same as mine.
If you grew up in or near a Mexican neighborhood this
music will touch your soul!!!
In The Beginning There Was This Little Band From East L.A..........2002-07-04
This is a must have for not only Los Lobos fans but those somewhat interested in their music. This album contains truly classic Mexican traditional songs that I used to hear as a child at family gatherings and continue to hear to this day with much pride and honor ! The guitar/acoustical arrangements are truly flawless and crisp. The rhythms are highly infectious and the melodies will stay with the listener long after the fiesta is over or the cd player stops ! Sabor A Mi is a timeless romantic bolero interpreted over the decades by other Latino artists (Trio Los Panchos come to mind). Here The Lobos do the song much justice with their perfect rendition. Guitars never sounded so awesome ! Yes, the Spanish language is beautiful (even if some listeners don't understand it). It's the music and harmonic vocals tht should captivate (and do) regardless of any language...

After 25 years together as a band, you'd expect Los Lobos to be spent creatively. Not so, though this East L.A. institution has settled into a perhaps too-comfortable groove with its past couple of albums. No longer the studio experimentalists of Kiko (still the group's best album), nor the Mexican roots-music purists of La Pistola y El Corazon, the band now offers a reliable mix of styles on each album--a smooth concoction that is equal parts roots-rock, blues, R&B, and Latin dance music. Although paired with new producer John Leckie (Radiohead, XTC), the band doesn't venture into much new sonic territory with Good Morning Aztlán. The most distinctive tracks are the three Latin-spiked numbers--in particular "Malaqúe," which merges vera cruzano harp with what sounds like Brazilian carnival rhythms--and a pair of gorgeous, '70s-inflected soul songs, "Hearts of Stone" and "The Word." Overall, Good Morning Aztlán is a good album but not a great one, at least by the band's lofty standards. --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Another triumph for that band from East L.A........2007-03-09
I really enjoy the mix this band provides. Straight ahead rock n roll, a lot of blues influences, and the traditional rythyms of Mexico.
David Hidalgo and Cesar Rojas both have distinctive and enjoyable vocal styles. My favorite tracks are "Hearts of Stone and the title track. Enjoy!
It is their best since Kiko.......2006-07-19
David Hidalgo has to be placed up there when it comes to all-time great songwriters. This album is more diverse than some of their later albums and has arguably their greatest song ever in the title track "Good Morning Aztlan." I now own most of Los Lobos stuff and place this album probably as their third of fourth best and that is a compliment. If you are a fan, you will love this album. I must disagree with the person that wrote the official notes on top about this CD. I do not feel that the songs sung in Spanish are the best on this album, quite the opposite. The best songs are the ones penned and sung by Hidalgo.
The first song is worth the price of the CD..........2006-05-08
Put this CD in your stereo, press play, and CRANK it..."Done Gone Blue" rocks out unlike any other song they have ever done. A jamming start to a great album...highly recommended.
Back on the Right Track.......2005-08-31
After two disappointing albums "Collossal Head" and "This Time" it seems that Los Lobos are back on the "right" track. Though not as consistent as their great albums ( Neighborhood, Kiko etc.) there are some very strong tracks here. "Tony y Maria" and "What in the World" are beautiful ballads. And the title track is a great rocker. Great guiltar playing all over, and I simply love the voice of David Hidalgo.
VERY AVERAGE.......2004-03-04
This one is nothing more than mainstream rock, and while that
in it's self is not inherently bad, I've come to expect much
better from this band. I would recommend KIKO or BY THE LIGHT
OF THE MOON instead, especially if you are a new comer to LOS
LOBOS. THE NEIGHBORHOOD would also be an excellent choice. I
enjoy this band very much, but not this release. I hope their
next offering sees them returning to form.
Thanks,
Tom
