As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

Director Sam Mendes's much-anticipated follow-up to his Academy Award ®-winning American Beauty found him exploring the period gangster film--but with a moral fiber and undercurrent of family tragedy familiar from his Oscar ® triumph. As he did with Beauty, Mendes again wisely entrusts the film's music to Tom Newman, a composer with an instinctive knack for getting inside a film's characters via innovative and often orthodox methods. As many of Newman's preceding scores have been rhythmically driven and rife with improvisation-driven experimentalism, its good to hear his equally distinctive writing for orchestra largely take center stage here again. But Newman's inquisitive musical instincts can't be denied, and his melancholy string writing is leavened first with subtle uilleann pipe flourishes that echo the characters' Irish-American roots, then with savory, yet ever-restrained touches of his own ethnic-defying instrumental color and rhythmic accents. It's another moody and introspective gem, seasoned with some lively period jazz (courtesy of the Charleston Chasers, Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra, and Chicago Rhythm Kings) and a warm, final surprise: a duet of John M. Williams's autumnal title track performed by none other than stars Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Fathers & Sons.......2007-05-13

After losing my Father back in October, I began reaching for things that reminded me of him. One of the things I reached for was the score for the Road to Perdition. Although my Father was gravely ill the day I took him to see the film, it ended up being a day not soon forgotten. I am listening to the soundtrack as I write this review. Fathers and Sons.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Wonderful.......2006-12-18

This soundtrack is amazing. Like Shawshank Redemption, Newman's music colors the film, reveals character, and highlights themes. I've listened to this soundtrack dozens of times, and I still love it. From the mournful "Piano Duet" to the driving "Lexington Hotel", this is a great purchase regardless of whether or not you liked the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tells The Story.......2006-04-12

Wonderful soundtrack. If you've seen the movie, you can listen to these tracks and almost guess what or who they are written for in the script. I think Thomas Newman is the drummer of their composer family, because almost all of his music has the underlying ryhthms that make you tap to the beat (even though this is classically orchestrated music), with music that perfectly breathes the air of the times it was written for.

5 out of 5 stars Road to Excellence!.......2006-03-14

I own both the movie and the score, and I have to tell you, this film would not be half of what it is without this gorgeous, mellow, and sometimes violent and aggressive score. It really carries the film, and I think it even surpasses it some. Newman really outdid himself this time!

5 out of 5 stars MY MOM !!.......2006-02-27

I COME LATE TO THIS MUSIC!! I SAW THE MOVIE ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO!! I LOVED THE MUSIC, BECAUSE IT REMINDS ME OF MY MOTHER!! SHE SAID SHE LIVED AT THIS TIME IN THE 1930'S. THE MUSIC IS HAUNTING LIKE SHE TALKED ABOUT HER CHILDHOOD. THE LOVE, VIOLENCE, AND HUMANITY,WHICH YOU FEEL IN THE MUSIC!! CLOSE YOUR EYES AND JUST LISTEN AND IMAGINE!!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the film..........2007-05-06

I remembered the music in the movie as being a little better than it actually is. I was a little disappointed in the CD.

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-03-26

It just wasn't what I thought it would be and I personally didn't like it. But it is good music.

5 out of 5 stars it's all about the Malagueña.......2004-12-01

i loved the movie and the music there is good. i really like the Malagueña so i learned how to play it on guitar. the song is great i enjoyed the movie as much as i enjoyed the sound track

5 out of 5 stars Start to Finish, a Real Mexi-CAN of a Soundtrack.......2004-11-30

Alright, so the main reason I got the soundtrack was Pistolero by Juno Reactor,a real driving, pumped-up techno song. I started to get into the rest of the music on the soundtrack, and I find it an essential cd I carry along with me. The great thing about this soundtrack is you can listen in on Mexican traditional music and a glimpse of the culture, and still have some real badass-sounding guitar! Whatever you may think of the film, you can imagine the actors playing their parts in your head, since they play and sing in the soundtrack (as the first one). There is an aura in the music I can't put my finger on; there's a history, an old feel to it, but it lingers with new musical ideas. Kinda like the movie, in terms of making it. I agree fullheartedly with previous reviews: where the movie fails, the music fills in the gaps and expands on Mexican music, making the entire movie/soundtrack experience very deep and epic. I dunno, maybe I'm rambling, but I emphasize that this soundtrack adds culture and kickass to your collection, as it did mine.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie!.......2004-11-21

When I first saw this film I was shocked at its total stupidity. I was a big fan of the first Desperado and this sequel completely choked my enthusiasm. One thing that was good about this film though was the music. I have to admit it, the music was excellent and in harmony with the motion picture. The best tracks on this CD are Traeme Paz, El Mariachi and Siente Mi Amor (Salma Hayek brings out the best in her sensuality in this song). I'm not a big fan of Latino music but some of these songs are so beautiful they deserve to be listened to. Yo Te Quiero and Cuka Rocka both are well known songs and excellent to dance to, while Flor Del Mal is a very nice and chilling ballad. This CD is a great addition to your music collection, don't hesitate to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

--Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

--Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

4 out of 5 stars Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

5 out of 5 stars American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.

4 out of 5 stars For God & Country And Dolly Parton.......2007-04-05

After excellent success on "Hungry Again", "The Grass Is Blue" which won her the 2001 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, "Little Sparrow" which won her the 2002 Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song "Shine" and "Halos & Horns", you would think Dolly's albums of the late 90s/early 2000s would get better, but so far they haven't. Dolly's albums dropped a little down the music charts again, just like she did in the early 90s. Dolly wasn't making really good albums, she was making either boring albums like "Slow Dancing With The Moon" or songs from other artists of the past. The great thing about Dolly is that she is a wonderful singer, songwriter & entertainer, so when she does covers, she makes them her own. So on "For God & Country" Dolly displays why she's a living legend, full of moving lyrics & music, some written by Dolly and some written by other artists, plus Dolly's vocals are at their best on here, full of emotion, heart and power. The album was a dedication to all the men & women, who have lost their lives in the Iraq war and past wars too. The highlights on this album include beautiful renditions of "The Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless The U.S.A.". Another great rendition is of Dolly's own song that she wrote years ago called "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning" which seems to get better everytime she re-does it. Other highlights include "Welcome Home", "I'm Gonna Miss You", "Brave Little Soldier" and "Color Me America" all which were written deep down from the heart of Dolly. All the highlights I mention in this review are so moving, whether their happy or sad, the songs are full of meaning and heart.

2 out of 5 stars Superfluous Dolly..........2007-03-21

While I'm sure this album was crafted with the sincerest intention, For God And Country is the weakest Dolly album to come along since Something Special. There's a bit of everything here to satisfy every musical taste--from power ballad to gospel to bluegrass to camp to children's songs--but in the end this collection of songs just sounds aimless, overblown, and very self-indulgent. There are a couple of very inspired tracks among the 18: the gospel stomper "Go To Hell", in which Dolly rivals Aretha for the pulpit; and the gentle touch on "There Will Be Peace In The Valley" with The Fairfield Four is worth the disc alone. Otherwise, another (and weaker) recording of "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning" and the inevitible self-depricating boobs jokes are the last things Parton fans need--or, I'll venture to say, want. I've always loved Dolly and will continue to be enamored with her supreme talent, sense of humor, and unique musicality, but most everything about this recording (right down the photos in which she seems to be impersonating none other than Bozo!) exemplifies how gaudy and over-the-top Parton can be for her own good. For God And Country was a great idea, but very poorly realized.

5 out of 5 stars B+ GREAT ALBUM.......2005-11-06

Ok not all of the album is great but most of it is!
And First Things First DOLLY IS NOT CASHING IN ON THE WAR!
She is doing this because she has always wanted to do a patriotic
album and now was a good time to do it. She even had it planned out before the Sept 11 Attacks.
BUT Without dollys songs on this album this CD Would have been a pure failer!
Anyways now on to the music.

The Lord is my sheperd (C+) is not that bad I only listen to the first verse of the song and skip the rest of the talking.
Star Spangled Banner (B+) is nice with dollys strong vocals it seems as if it was her own song
God Bless The USA (I)Is a problem It is far overproduced Just like all the other modern country music today. But She holds a long note at the end
Light Of A Clear Blue Morning (B-) is pretty good but the introduction at the beggining is so annoying when you relay the song over and over again
When Johnny Comes Marching Home (A-) Is one of the better songs on the album. It was Re-aranged by dolly and has a second verse written by dolly
Welcome Home (A+)Is even better
Gee Ma I Wanna Go Home (A-) Is the funniest song on the album. She tells jokes about her two secret weapons of mass destraction "shock 'n all" And it has 2 new verses about sadam and his mother, it his halarios
Whispering Hope (A) Is pretty amazing I have never heard dolly's voice go that high and sound that way before
There will be peace in the valley for me (B+)
Red White And Bluegrass (A-) Is good foot stomping fun and it's written by dolly. But it sounds alot better when she sings it live!
My Country Tiss (I OR F) I hate to be so mean to this song but not all of it works out. Sorry but the beggining for some reason is the best part and slowly turns into a mess at the end
Im Gonna Miss You (A+)Is one of the most sad songs dolly has ever written. I also love the arangements to it
Go To Hell (B) A True Standout
Ballad Of The Green Beret (A-)Is A Good Song But I Cant Think Of Anything To Say About The Song exept for the haunting ending and the once again annoying intro to the song
Brave Little Soldier (A++++) MY ABSOLUTE FAVEORITE SONG ON THE ALBUM! It sounds so sad, so alone, so haunting, so erie, so happy all at the same time. And yes it was written by dolly.
Tie A Yellow Ribbon (A+) I never actually though that this song would work in a bluegrass version but it dose and the results are great
Color Me America (A) Another True standout written by dolly. and she holds a couple long notes in the song

Overall Its A Good Album but not as good as her greatest work ever: HALOS AND HORNS, LITTLE SPARROW, THE GRASS IS BLUE, HUNGRY AGAIN.

So I Would Recomend it to almost anyone who likes great music
I also recomend LIVE AND WELL and her new release THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

3 out of 5 stars Dolly's Red State Album.......2005-10-18

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY is perhaps the most controversial album of Dolly Parton's career. Long famous for not getting into politics, this disc seems to have Dolly jumping in with a gusto in what seems like a disc deliberately packaged for the most conservative of Dolly fans (who amazingly have never been scared off by the National Enquirer). Yet the album is more controversial to me with it's unholy mix of beloved religious standards of the ages with some incredibly cheesy new songs with a quasi-patriotic edge. These handful of duds don't deserve to be included on album with such historic American anthems like "The Star Spangled Banner" either. Dolly would have done much better to have sought out more classic patriotic songs from our nation's heritidge including songs long forgotten by the general public like the wonderful "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." "Brave Little Soldier" is lovely but the bluegrass arrangement to "My Country This of Thee" is a mess, making almost a mockery of those great lyrics. The religious classics are a welcome breath of fresh air and transcend any political spin. Dolly loves America and America certainly loves Dolly, one just wishes the love affair would have produced a more tasteful and thought-provoking love offering.

1 out of 5 stars strong on feelings, but weak on inspiration.......2005-06-24

It's hard to write a simple review of the music in this album, because in it there are clear political and religious ideals expressed that Americans are very divided about right now. Let me get the political stuff out of the way first: Dolly is so incredibly talented and revered that she'll unavoidably be under the microscope when producing something that touches on things having to do with religion, war and/or politics. Her music is clever enough that I even found myself looking for some hidden sarcasm about the whole "God and Country" theme possessing half of America today. There actually is a tiny bit of that in a few songs, but you are more likely to enjoy this album if (a) you are an American and (b) you agree with the basic sentiments that America is the best country in the world and that God is on our side. When this album first appeared on Amazon it got nothing but 5 stars from folks who were both (a) and (b)--but public opinion about war (including the level of patriotism presented in this album and the entangling of love of God with love of country) is always shifting--therefore I don't expect this album to have a good "shelf life."

From a purely musical standpoint, I personally was not inspired by this album. For me, a good song has clever lyrics, energizing rhythm, and a melody that is not utterly predictable. But even the new songs have a "recycled" feel about them, and I felt that there was not a lot of substance in the lyrics beyond the aforementioned politically/religiously charged sentiments. At times I felt emotionally manipulated by the lyrics--of course we all feel terribly for our young soldiers who are dying--anyone who is human responds to these things, but what we need is music with some deeper insight into these struggles. The rhythms and melodies were nothing special either--Dolly's recent "Sparrow" and "Grass" albums are better albums in that regard. "God and Country" is a "temp" album, motivated not so much by good musical ideas, but by powerful, and very transitional, feelings. For some people this meets a need--but I couldn't give it more than one star.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-06-04

Another triumph for Anuna- this album incorporates more instruments than other albums, but it is done so tastefully and it really adds a whole new dimension to the crisp voices of Anuna.

Definitely worth a place in any music library!

5 out of 5 stars Different, but still superb.......2003-12-29

Unlike most of the albums Anuna has put out so far, most tracks on this album are for choir AND orchestra. The harmonies are definitely 20th century, but they are pleasing to the ear almost always add to the already excellent sound of the choir. Of particular note are the tracks "The Great Wood" (available for download on Anuna's site if you're curious to hear before buying) and the final track, "1901".

Although the sound may be different than what you have come to expect from previous albums, I would still recommend this one wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars another excellent cd by anuna.......2003-06-11

I bought this album when it was still only available in Ireland, and it was well worth the extra money then. Like Cynara and Deep Dead Blue, this CD has more modern music, including some songs composed by Anuna members, as well as the more traditional music they're known for. Perfect for studying or working to.

Q: Why has Queer Eye for the Straight Guy become one of the biggest cable/broadcast television phenoms of the admittedly young 21st century? A: Because life just isn't fabulous enough. But Queer Eye's producers and makeover mavens have bigger ambitions than sharing chic accoutrements for the hetero taste-challenged: they want to provide the soundtrack(s) to your life. This vibrant, club-savvy collection, characterized by the driving dance rhythms and upbeat outlook of Widelife/Simone Denny's sassy QE theme song "All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)," is but the first in what's planned as a series of show-inspired music anthologies. But while the collection's club chi-chi quotient (which includes an exclusive Chemical Bros. remix of Kylie Minogue's smoldering Euro smash "Slow," the US debut of Jamelia's synth-funk UK hit "Superstar" and "Everybody Wants You to Emerge, a giddy mixmaster smash-up of Fischerspooner and Billy Squier) is enough to recommend it, its expansive spirit also includes remixes from Sting and the newly reunited line-up of Duran Duran, as well as the standout dance track "An Area Big Enough To Do It In" by Omega Prophet and the coda of Elton John's Soulful 1979 hit, "Are You Ready For Love." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great workout, driving, and family singing along music.......2006-02-25

I bought this album because several songs were showing up in my Jazzercise workout. Now, our whole family of five loves it and sings along in the car. We call it dance/pop with a twist. These tracks remind me of UK pop, and no one does it better than the British. So where's the sequel to this album?!

5 out of 5 stars A music and manfest that anybody would kill for!.......2005-05-16

I listened to this CD in the car on the way home from a client's drab-to-fab new sitting room and just about got myself pulled over. It was like I was drunk, girl, this album is the bombinacious. From the Chemical Brothers to Durran2, every track is an absolute peach. And you don't have to spit out the pits. Get this album in your collection or crawl back to the stoneage. I'm for real.

5 out of 5 stars Quite a nice mix........2005-01-09

This CD is a nice offering to the award winning reality television show. Music is nice mix of several music styles. Its not just dance music. I love the Bravo Network TV Show. Get this musical CD. Its an easy listen.

4 out of 5 stars "Take Your Ears from Drab to Fab.".......2004-08-20

I'm not really a huge fan of the Bravo series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," for reasons I needn't get into. This is, after all, a MUSIC review, and as such, I'll focus on the soundtrack, which happens to be much better than I expected. Albums of this sort appear to be gimmicky marketing tie-ins, featuring second-rate tracks from popular artists who wouldn't otherwise include them on their own releases. But as it turns out, it's a pretty solid collection of tunes that seesaw from pop to dance. As a child of the 1980s, my personal favorite is the Jason Nevins remix of Duran Duran's "Sunrise," the group's first song featuring all five original members in 19 years. It's a funky fusion of rock and electro, and it's a nice preview to the band's "Astronaut" album. But the fun doesn't stop there. The Chemical Brothers give Kylie's "Slow" a radical makeover, and Billy Squier's 1982 gem "Everybody Wants You" gets a modern update. Other highlights are a remix of Sting's "Never Coming Home," Basement Jaxx's "Good Luck, and Elton John's 1979 recording "Are You Ready for Love." It says a lot when a non-fan of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" gives this soundtrack four stars. The material here is strong enough to make this an interesting choice for both fans and non-fans of the TV series.
