The Best of The Doors delivers exactly what it promises. Rather than relying solely on the hits, this collection also mines the darker, and often richer, recesses of The Doors material resulting in a fairly representative statement. The hits are here: "Light My Fire" with Ray Manzarek's keyboards on a dizzy, psychedelic spree; "People Are Strange," with Morrison's tortured psyche barely being held in check; "L.A. Woman," with its bluesy sexuality. More important, favorites of fans are here, like the controversially (at the time) explicit "The End," which was one of the first of Morrison's forays into narrative poetry. In hits like "Break on Through," "Hello I Love You," "Roadhouse Blues," and others, The Doors melded psychedelia, blues, hard-edged rock, and poetry from the edge like no other band before. The Best of The Doors is a trip in every sense of the word. --Steve Gdula

Good listening!.......2007-07-16
It's great to pop the CD into the car and sing with all the favorites that you've forgotten you knew the words to!
Simply The Best.......2007-07-01
By far, the greatest Rock and Roll band of all time. Technically, you shouldn't buy this greatest hits CD as you will be missing out on too many great songs. What you should do is go and buy all 6 studio CDs with Morrison on vocals, then buy the Russian Import of the 2 Doors CDs post Morrison as they are excellent as well.
the best hippie album ever.......2007-06-21
i cant say more then that im speechless
Open this Door.......2007-06-20
This is an awesome Doors compilation, must have for any fan. The Doors music was unique: funky synethiser sound, maybe the first major band to make heavy use of it; they used it well. The Doors' lyrics are weird and fantastic, but in a cool way, not at all stupid. All the hits are on this 2-disc collection. Definitely a good value. You'll see why the Doors are a lasting piece of 60s culture.
The Doors are the Greatest.......2007-06-04
I have to say The Doors "Greatest Hits" album is the best one yet! No fan can live without this amazing collection of songs. It included all of the most famous hits like "Break On Through", "Touch Me", and "Hello, I Love You". These are just few of the sixteen tracks put together on one CD. You have to buy this, its so amazing, just trust me. I love this album with a passion and I'm sure you'll be just as attached to it as I am. You won't regret it, and its even great as a gift!

This packed double-disc is the slim option for fans who find the Eagles' vaunted greatest hits sets too little and the boxed set too hefty. Hit singles large and medium are here, often ("One of These Nights," "Hotel California") still sounding definitive and even tough. Large helpings of favorite album cuts are also included, along with a taster from a promised 2004 Eagles studio reunion. Unfortunately, "Hole in the World," Don Henley's response to September 11, feels just as empty and entitled as "Get Over It," the band's previous state-of-the-union message (from which the newer song represents a philosophical 180-degree turn). But for those seeking an overview of this Southern California juggernaut's successes, as well as telling comments from band members--mostly Henley and Frey--in a well-designed booklet, Very Best will more than do. --Rickey Wright

Dollars and (common) cents........2007-06-14
I'm going to rate this CD based on a $1 per song cost to total cost for the entire CD (Apple and Rhapsody charge $1 per song).
The Eagles are great. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh. I'm sure glad Hell froze over for them. Not that their recordings as the Eagles have been any good since then, but at least we might get a chance to see them live in concert.
This CD is the 'Greatest Hits' I've been waiting for. No longer do you have to buy their 'Greatest Hits - 1971 to 1975' for $14 and also their 'Greatest Hits - Vol. 2' for $15, in order to get all of their best work. There are $16 worth of great songs on here, but it will cost you $20 for the CD on Amazon. The songs are: CD 1: Tracks 1,2,3,4,7,8,13,14,15 & 17; CD 2: Tracks 1,3,5,7,9 & 10.
Better yet, all of the songs I've listed are available on iTunes. So buy each of the 16 songs individually on iTunes and save yourself $4.
Hope this helps.

This Witchy Woman Loves this Album.......2007-06-05
Twenty hits from the Eagles make's sure you get your moneys worth. "Hotel California" & "Best of My Love" are my two faves, but I love them all. California rock and roll, gotta love it. I know this desperado type witchy woman does as she sips her tequila sunrise just before she takes it to the limit.
Eagles Rock.......2007-05-13
I love, love, love this CD. I will treasure it forever. It has all the songs I love and wanted to hear. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great Eagles collection. The Eagles Rock!
Great album to be a cornerstone of a music library.......2007-03-07
Confession time. I never grew up with the Eagles. Until I watched the live reunion DVD at a high end home audio shop, I only knew the names and some of the songs.
This is a darned good album that spans The Eagles portfolio of songs. The live album has a more refined sound due to age and experience of the band members BUT, this is a benchmark hits album of the original recordings.
They are all 5 star songs but..........2007-03-05
I will never get used to another Eagle's greatest hits album since that original one came out in early '76 since I got very accustomed to the perfect order in which those songs are played. I noticed that this newer version did not leave "Best Of My Love" as an ending song to the CD as it was on Greatest Hits 71-75 and on it's original album from '74 entitled: "The Border". In the case of "The Very Best Of the Eagles",they had 2 chances to put "Best Of My Love" at the end of a CD. Just like they had 6 chances on three different Journey compilations CDs to keep "Open Arms" an ending song to a CD as it was on 1981's "Escape". I guess I'm referring to the producers and or record company etc. After I bought the original "Eagle's Greatest Hits" that came out in early '76 (with it's perfect song list & sequence), all I ended up having to do was to buy two more studio albums ("Hotel California" and "The Long Run") and I had all the songs I needed. Now I have two DCC gold editions (Eagles Greatest Hits 71-75 and Hotel California) So, I've got 95 percent of their best stuff now. But for all of you that just want some Eagles songs and are not accustomed to the perfect order of the songs found on the original greatest hits CD (heard lots during our Bicentennial Year), you will probably be pleased with this CD set and with the songs that are included on it. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted it in fact as a career spanning CD set. But I'll personally never give up that perfect ordered original '76 edition of greatest hits for purposes of listening to straight through from start to finish.

Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix the rocker and Hendrix the underrated soul man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive. --Rickey Wright

Whole Hendrix.......2007-07-02
An excellent Hendrix compilation. All of the famous stuff still played on the radio is on here, as well as lesser-knowns. Definitely get this if a Hendrix fan. 20 tracks, over an hour of music. Great value.
Jimi Hendrix: A man whose spirit and music is immortal........2007-06-17
I don't know why I didn't review this album a long time ago. Jimi Hendrix is one of the greatest artists in rock music, and the greatest guitarist of all time. He wasn't the fastest, but his music revolutionized so much music, and in the small amount of time he was around, as well. "Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix" is an essential piece of rock and roll. It's very accessable, literally in every store I've been in, and it only goes for ten dollars.
On this 20-song compilation, you get such popular tracks as "Purple Haze", "Fire", and Jimi's highest-charter, the timeless, Bob Dylan cover "All Along The Watchtower". Of course, Jimi was influenced by a variety of music, as he shows in the incredible blues stylings of "Red House" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return"). You have such trippy songs as the soul-influenced "Crosstown Traffic", a personal favorite, the somewhat-dirty and ever-groovy "Foxey Lady", the brilliant masterpiece, "If 6 Was 9" and the "it's-so-trippy-I-don't-know-what-to-say" work of art that is "Bold As Love". Then there's the eternal beauty of "Little Wing", the funky, post-humous, "Dolly Dagger" and his immortal genius of the Woodstock recording of "Star Spangled Banner". Of course, there are more than that, but this just goes to show what a musician Jimi Hendrix was!
All in all, an excellent collection that should belong in every classic rock fan's library. After this, you might wanna check out "Band of Gypsys", as it shows Jimi's stunning live work. Although artists like Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Led Zeppelin may stir controversy, I always believe that it's what you personally think of the music. And I, for one, believe Jimi Hendrix's music is timeless, awesome and extremely influential. Hope you all love this one, peace!
Really Good Album.......2007-05-31
Well i bought this album and i was very happy and overjoyed when i bought this off amazon! Frikin Best Hendrix album!!

Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," and "God That Failed," despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with "Unforgiven," and proves that they can write a ballad with "Nothing Else Matters," which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high-energy album despite its laid-back approach, and is in many ways superior to the previous . . . And Justice for All, which was weakened by overly complicated song structures and mediocre production. -- Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:
Metallica's 'Black Album' A Rush of Experience..........2007-07-30
Metallica is one of those bands that people love to love more than hate, and the band does have its share of haters. It began moreso with this, METALLICA, also referred to by numerous as "the black album". Many people felt that Metallica was going mainstream and selling out with this record, but more than ever it also gained acceptance by mainstream critics and more than three quarters of the fans embraced this album as a mixture of raw aggression and mainstream rock energy. Metallica carved a huge niche on the rock and metal scene with this album, selling well over ten million copies of this album to this day. And there are so many reasons why it was a huge success for the band.
"Enter Sandman" experiments with the band's thrashy sound by adding some groove-oriented textures into the mix, creating a menacing crunch song with some interesting lyrics sung as only Hetfield could. One thing you'll notice right away is how hard Lars' drums hit all over this album, and it creates an monolithic feeling on each track. Hetfield's and Kirk Hammett's guitars crunch, seethe, and dominate all over this album, and you can hear Newsted's intense, throbbing bass all over this album, and he also contributes background vocals which sound excellent. The band can hammer home hard with some headbanger worthy cuts ("Sad But True", "Wherever I May Roam", "Holier Than Thou") and throw some sparse gentle acoustic moments into their volatile mixture ("The Unforgiven", "Nothing Else Matters"). "Nothing Else Matters" is a beautifully crafted ballad written by the band that works incredibly well for a group so used to thrashing out like the headbanger gods they were and still, to some degree, are today. "The Unforgiven" is a supreme metal song, a monster of a song during the verses and huge chorus. This album successfully mixes the guitar thrash of their earlier work with some interesting melodic moments and more grooves and gives the album a diverse feel and near-masterpiece tone. "Where I May Roam" even invites a sitar intro into it's mix before it crashes into a full-on thrash metal machine for close to seven minutes. Over the course of the album's 62 minutes and dozen tracks, Metallica prove beyond a shadow of a doubt why they are one of metal's finest craftsmen.
Many fans felt that Metallica sold out when it came to ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and METALLICA, but in reality Metallica were growing into an even more powerful band, and the sales really say it all. The "black album" generated new fans, strong sales, critical success, and the band's continuing evolution in the metal scene. With a volatile mixture of brawn, guitar thrash, hard-hitting rhythms, and Hetfield's gentle and menacing vocal performance, the "black album" stands as one of the best metal records in the history of music.
Nothing that hasn't been said a million times, but let me reiterate...........2007-07-19
This is a great Metallica ablum. No, it's not thrashy, so those in search of speed need to back up to Blackened or Damage, Inc, etc. But what it is is rib-cracking heavy, rich in melody, and solid vocals/lyrics.
It's also the last time to date (now July 19, 2007) that Metallica has been so consistently good. Load is "good" and made persistently better by each subsequent disappointing release. Yet in the shadow of this record, Load is still underachieving. The Black Album is a firm member of the classics group.
And while it is more accessible to Joe Listener than say Kill Em All, it's not going down a road they've not traveled before. Cries of "SELLOUT" and "COMMERICAL CRAP" are so vastly overstated it's quite frankly puke-inducing. Metallica has been melodic and acoustic-tinged since Ride The Lightning and that's no different here. The Unforgiven gets heavy in the midst of its melody, not unlike Fade TO Black. The lone oddball is the consistently soft Nothing Else Matters, which, while not Metallica typical, is gorgeous and rich. So lay off...! :D
Others like Sandman, Sad But True, Holier Than Thou, Of Wolf And Man, Wherever I May Road, and the Newsted-friendly My Friend Of Misery are great...!
This is a solid album, and, quite frankly, my favorite. I love that it's both accessible, but not poppy.
Let's be honest, too. Some fans RESENT this record because it became so bloody HUGE...and everyone owned it. Had this record sold 900,000 units, not gotten on MTV, they'd not toured with GNR...and this had begun and ended as a quiet affair, this album would be adored as the band's forgotten gem. Even with the same track listing.
It's not only Metallica's best due to its diversity, it's one of the top 10 metal records of all time.
A Five Star Experience.......2007-07-09
There is certainly much debate amongst Metallica fans, especially the original fans, as to the greatness of this CD. Though it may not be as raw as the earlier CDs, it is one heck of a great rock and roll album. The CD is full of one great song after another. My personal favorite is Wherever I may Roam. Had this been Metallica's only CD/Album, they would have been considered a success. One of the greatest live bands of all time show there skills on this excellent 5 star CD.
metallica rules.......2007-07-06
There is no question WHY this CD was on the billboard charts for so long. Some say they sold out when they made this CD but, you have to appreciate Metallica for constantly changing. This is a killer CD.
Highly entertaining.......2007-06-13
Wow! What a great CD this is by my favorite heavy metal band. This is by far their best after 1988's ...And Justice For All, 1986's Master Of Puppets, and 1984's Ride The Lightning.
Enter Sandman: What an intro and by far my favorite Metallica song ever after 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME! Excellent.
Sad But True: Great song but not a favorite.
Holier Than Though: Brilliant.
The Unforgiven: The best Metallica ballad rocker after 'Fade to Black'.
Wherever I May Roam: This is one great song and one of their best songs ever!! James sings excellent in this song!!
Don't Tread On Me: Brilliant and LAUGHABLE.
Through the Never: This album's second best to Enter Sandman.
Nothing Else Matters: Possibly the weakest song on this album and still pretty good. This is a ballad that I have never cried during it.
Of Wolf and Man: Pretty good lyrics and music!
The God That Failed: Been a fan to this song for a while. This song has excellent singing and lyrics.
My Friend of Misery: One of the album's best. Certainly the longest on tha album about 7 excellent minutes of great music.
Struggle Within: One of the best closers in metal.
Please get this CD. This CD is definately what every rock fan should own. Get this with RTL, MOP, and ...AJFA which are great albums too. Metallica rocks.

Rod Stewart's career has been subject to so many twists that a single-disc overview is somehow both appealingly broad and inadequate to the task of tracing all those zigzags. From beloved rocker of the first order to disco dilettante to pop crooner, Stewart's career has presented challenges to fans who may have been charmed by the rollickingly randy "Maggie May" and bemused by the alarmingly narcissistic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?" This 16-song retrospective touches all the bases without delving deeply into any era. The selections aren't arranged sequentially and the booklet is much more generous with vintage photos than album credits. This best-of collection is clearly aimed at the casual fan, but no album that presents Rod the Mod gems "Downtown Train," "You Wear It Well," and "Reason to Believe" one after another is a throwaway. --Steven Stolder

The Very Best of Rod Stewart.......2007-05-14
If you want the best that he has done, this is it. It has all of my favorites, especially "Rhythm of My Heart". If you prefer to have collections of a performer's best, this is it for Rod Stewart.

Echoes is a double-CD collection of some of Pink Floyd's best songs. It's also a fascinating document of the band's history. They began life as Syd Barrett's phantasmagoric plaything before clasping the wings of Icarus and ascending toward the sun on an epic space-rock odyssey, eventually turning left once they reached the dark side of the moon and burning up on reentry, crash-landing on every earthlings' home hi-fi. And it's all here--30 years of the Floyd's awesome back catalog trimmed down to two handsome CDs. It's worth remembering that, despite a fondness for pyrotechnics, Pink Floyd were never a prog-rock band. Sure, some of their songs are a bit long, and they never released singles (at least not for 11 years), but the same could be said for Led Zeppelin. Clinically devoid of the faux-classical overtures and vainglorious musicianship of that era, Pink Floyd were a pole apart; Meddle's epic maritime tone poem "Echoes" remains the Floyd's apogee. But here, on this collection, "the albatross" which "hangs motionless upon the air" has had its wings clipped--seven full minutes are missing, but you'd never be able to tell. The sonar bleeps, the screeching seagulls, the howling winds are all retained, and whoever wielded the editorial axe, Eugene, did so carefully.
Interestingly, the album's nonchronological track listing works--the summery, childhood enchantment of "See Emily Play" is right next to the school discipline of "Happiest Days of Our Lives"--and at least this way no one will switch off when material from A Momentary Lapse of Reason comes around. Despite the curious omission of "Atom Heart Mother," this really is the very best of the Floyd--from the throbbing "One of These Days" to the pop operatic "Great Gig in the Sky" to the genius silvery fluidity of Dave Gilmour's guitar work. This is timeless, as many members of Sigur Rós, Radiohead, and the Beta Band will attest. --Kevin Maidment

Floyd Fever.......2007-07-20
This two disc Floyd compilation is a great buy. It's an excellent overview of Floyd's hits, showcasing their weird but intriguing sounds and lyrics. This collection is particularly good for people who like Floyd, but aren't such hard-core fans as to have all of the individual albums. The obvious hits from the radio [Brick in the Wall, Hey You, Money, Learning to Fly] are here, as well as lesser-played but still great stuff, like Arnold Layne and Fletcher Memorial Home, and when the Tigers Broke Free, which is a heartfelt reflection on losing a father to war.
If you only could have ONE Pink Floyd Disc, this is the one........2007-07-02
Most would think that would be DSOTM. It's a close call. But, since this set has most of the best cuts from DSOTM, and the best cuts from every other release, this would be my choice.
Disc 2 of this set has been my bedtime CD for over a year now.
Only two comments. I could do without "Bike". That song just creeps me out, especially the freaky noise at the very end.
Secondly, I'm disappointed that they cut Gilmours Blues solo in SOYCD.
I still give it 5 stars though.
EDIT: BTW... If you are a guitar player, there is what is probably one of the best TAB books ever produced for this album. It covers every song, exactly, and has every Gilmour solo.

Unfortunately, it is out of print so you will have to go with a listed used copy.
I'd get it while you can.
Not the very best of Floyd.......2007-06-19
Even though this is supposed to be the "Best" of Pink Floyd I would beg to differ. Right now I have a list in front of me of Pink floyd songs that were unjustly omitted. On the other hand, there are a handful of songs here- mainly in Floyd's later years- that are mediocre at best and have no business being on this album. It's still a sure bet for die-hard Floyd fans, however. The best Floyd albums are The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish you were Here.
Great Introduction to Pink Floyd.......2007-06-11
Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd, is a great introduction to this classic ahead of its time rock group. For those of you not born in the 50's or 60's that could have enjoyed the classic Dark Side of the Moon during its release, this is a tremendous way to find out what all of the fuss was/is about. I am certain that this great CD set will inspire people to purchase much of the Pink Floyd collection, especially some of the bigger hits like The Wall and Dark Side. Many of these songs are simply haunting, while others prove to show how versatile this super group has been over the years. An outstanding value. 5 Stars!

If you're gonna side-step the actual albums and simply dip into a compilation of this seminal band, then this is a safe bet for a solid primer. This collection is substantive, richly entertaining and demonstrates the enduring appeal of one extraordinary band.

Not what I expected.......2007-08-01
I thought this was the best of and several songs I did not know and frankly did not like. I am sorry to say I was very disappointed.
1 great song, 2 decent ones..........2007-07-31
I bought this because I love the song "carry on wayward son". That song is phenomenal, epic, rocks hard, and is undeniably one of the greatest classic rock tunes ever. "Dust in the Wind" and "point of no return" are pretty good too. The rest of the cd, frankly, BLOWS! Really just not good and not my thing at all. Well, at least I can crank the mighty "Carry On Wayward Son" whenever I want now!
much improved collection.......2007-07-08
This is a much better version of the original 1984 release and even the later CD release.
First off I want to say something about Kansas. It still eludes me to this day why a great band like this was lumped in with such bands as Styx and Foreigner and Journey. It still bugs me to this day. Kansas was nothing like any of those bands!!
Anyway, this is a vastly improved collection from the original. It has the hits, a few choice album cuts and a great live version of Closet Chronicles which I wish they would put back into their live album where it belongs!
There are still the 80's tracks here which are not as good as the 70's stuff, but they are only two of them here. While this is not a complete collection of their good stuff it's a good place for a beginner. So if you only know their hits and want to hear a bit more of what these guys were all about, this is definitely for you.
I don't have this in my collection anymore because I have deemed it redundant and I have all these songs on CD somewhere already.
So this collection, though not complete, is still decent. Four stars for this. Recommended for the casual listener only.
Kansas stays strong over the years.......2007-06-27
In the '80s, I heard a few songs by Kansas, but never became a devoted fan. My mistake. After putting this CD into my car stereo, I really didn't want to arrive at my destination. I just wanted to finish hearing all of the songs.
Carry on Wayward Son, Dust in the Wind and Point of No Return are three that I can listen to over and over without ever getting enough.
Kerry Livgren rocks!
Kansas Wayne Gacy.......2007-04-24
What was the thing that Malachai had in the trees that he burned in the Kansas cornfields? Maybe it wasn't a scarecrow. I can't remember. I liked Malachai though. He was very serious and seemed to have a lot of concern for his cause. What was his cause? It was some kind of weird religion thing, but it was very cool.
I mean, really, if you could have done that kind of stuff after school when you were a kid, you would have the time of your life. You get off the school bus, walk home and get some Oreo cookies, and then head to the cornfields for some sacrifices and goat head choppings. These kids had a great childhood, their parents didn't even bug them or anything. Anyway, what was I talking about. Oh yeah, the band KANSAS was utterly horrible.

Great bang for the buck.......2007-07-25
Given the inconsistency of the Purple line-up through the years, it's quite amazing that they didn't end up second-rate hack acts playing at obscure county fairs or dingy bars trying to make ends meet. Somehow this outfit has retained its popularity, and the budget priced "The Very Best Of Deep Purple" is a great compilation. While it doesn't contain material from "Come Taste The Band" that featured the late Tommy Bolin or any Steve Morse-era material, currently Purple's lead guitarist, the focal point of Jon Lord's trademark organ and Ritchie Blackmore's slicing leadwork make this a very solid collection, indeed.
Of course, "Smoke On the Water" is here, but so are lots of other gems, including their first hit "Hush", a great reworking of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman", and "Burn", all great tracks.
The set closes with "Knocking At Your Back Door", from "Perfect Strangers", the album that reunited the classic line-up from "Machine Head" and "Made In Japan". Ian Gillan is one of rock's great vocalists, and the best Purple ever had. He still sings for them today.
The other must-have CD is their live masterpiece "Made In Japan", with much tougher versions of "Highway Star" and "Smoke On The Water", and a real space jam on the 20 minute plus "Space Truckin'". Reacquaint yourself with this great band or introduce yourself today.
The Title Says It All.......2007-06-06
This is a great intro to one of rock's greatest band. For a single CD, this is the one to one. It truely is the very best of purple.
A tale of two concerts.......2007-05-16
For whatever reason, the footage of the Copenhagen concert rarely shows Ritchie Blackmore playing, even during his intros or solos. Somebody needs to track that cameraman down and slap him silly. The New York concert footage is better, but the majoity of the tracks on this DVD come from the Copenhagen show. Overall this DVD is a disappointment, enjoyable sometimes, but a disappointment nonetheless.
The very, very, very best?.......2007-02-02
Well, yes and no! There're a couple of things that you should know about this release: first, the liner notes claim that this is the first collection of the CD era, which is not entirely true, since the previous "Deepest Purple" compilation was already available (However, the remastering is most welcome!). And that's probably my only complaint (I would actually rate this item with 4 and a half stars, but since the format won't allow me to do that...) about this compilation: it offers very little additional material, only 3 songs that were not included in "Deepest...".
Its title notwithstanding, this CD is a "greatest hits" compilation and not (necessarily) "The Very best", but semantics aside, there are a couple of exceptions of songs that were not issued as singles (Space Trucking and Child in Time, for instance...). I originally didn't care much for the covers of "Kentucky Woman" and "Hush", but I understood their inclusion here since those were the first hits the band scored with in the U.S (the territory this CD is meant for). But the tunes eventually grew on me, leading me to get their first 3 records.
It's a shame that no additional material from the band's second coming in the 80's could be included though, but that is simply a record company issue: the latter part of Purple's catalog was released with a different record label. In the end, this is a great compilation, and if you want to have a taste of some of Purple's best material, this is a good place to start. However, if you, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive package, including music from all the lineups (including the criminally underrated Mk IV, completely ignored here...), you might be a bit disappointed...You can always get the boxet "Shades", but... that's a different tale... But casual fans looking for nothing but the hits rejoice: here they are!!! And for roughly 8 bucks, you can't really ask for more...
Rock And Roll At Its Best.......2006-12-07
One of the biggest and best bands of the late 1960s' / early 1970s' classic rock movement was undoubtedly Deep Purple. Featuring some of the finest musicians rock hard to offer as well as one of the best lead singers ever (Ian Gillan), in their heyday they were truly a force to be reckoned with.
This 16 track colection collects all of Deep Purple's most popular hits, such as "Hush", "Kentucky Woman", the epic "Child In Time", "Highway Star", the legendary "Smoke On The Water" (a song that joins "Stairway To Heaven" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as one of the echelons of overplayed classic rock anthems, which is not to say it's a bad song), "My Woman From Tokyo" and many others. The sound quality is fantastic, and the liner notes make for a really good read.
I highly recommend this collection.

The best of the era.......2007-07-09
The bset cuts from, arguably, the best years of the Stones. If you are Stones fan you probably have most of these on other albums, however now they are all together for you, just pop in the cd and you've got eighteen of their best. A shame, however some longer versions of the songs aren't here, like Waiting on a friend...the long version has some incredible sax solos by Billy Keys. The one downfall of strictly studio cut albums.
Forget the iPod, just play the entire CD!
How come they sound so good? Cuz its the STONES, that's why!.......2007-01-08
JUMP BACK * THE BEST OF THE ROLLING STONES has tracks that span the years 1971 to 1989. Taken direct from masters, and using what was then the latest technology (20 bit), sound quality of these 18 tunes is excellent. Included is a nicely illustrated 12-page booklet, that has comments about each song by band members-- the sort of details fans and trivia buffs go for. Some examples: "Brown Sugar" was written by Mick while he was filming NED KELLY in Australia, the demo of "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (But I Like It)" featured Jagger and David Bowie, "Undercover Of The Night" was inspired by a William Borroughs novel called CITIES OF THE RED NIGHT, and so on.
JUMP BACK is a solid collection of later-career Rolling Stones tracks, recorded while they were still at the top of their game.
TOTAL RUNNING TIME -- 74:19
Great Stones Collection.......2006-07-07
If you want to listen to the best Mick Jagger & company had to offer from the early 70s to the early 90s then this is the CD for you.
Not all the big numbers are here but there are enough to make this a "must have" Stones album, especially for those who don't want to buy all the individual albums these tunes came from.
The digital remastering sounds great and there is a good liner notes booklet too.
not the best choice of songs.......2006-05-20
This should have included SHATTERED, SHE'S SO COLD, and ONE HIT TO THE BODY, if it was a true greatest hits cd from this time period.
Mixed Emotional CD.......2006-03-11
I have Mixed Emotions about this CD compilation. Most of the Stones best songs are here during that era, although I would have liked to have seen "Can't You Hear Me Knocking?", "Monkey Man", "Shattered", "She's So Cold", or "Dance Little Sister" on it. But the biggest letdown in this CD was the editted version of the Monster Hit: "Miss You" by one minute and sixteen seconds. (the singles version) Also, "Beast of Burden","Hot Stuff", and "Fool to Cry" were each cut by almost a full minute! "Rock and A Hard Place" was also editted too. (You can hear the eight minute dance version of 'Miss You' on the "Rarities '71 to '03" CD, but that was more amusing than fantastic listening.) Overall the 'Jump Back' CD is good, but You Can't Always Get What You Want. If you did, you got me Rocking!

There are a couple of Santana best-of compilations out there, and even a few mastersound gold-plated CDs, but this collection is as good a place as any for a newcomer to explore. It contains the band's three essential charters--"Black Magic Woman," "Evil Ways," and "Oye Como Va"--along with some lesser hits. Santana broke barriers, making ethnic-influenced music palatable to the mainstream, but this set doesn't sound like a history lesson. Few bands have ever made better music for driving on a hot summer day, and this CD is ideal for blasting out the windows of your car on a crowded thoroughfare. --Charles R. Cross
Customer Reviews:
Lots of good stuff, some not so great........2007-07-15
The tracks on here range from blockbuster hits to some not so great stuff that should have not even made a "best of" CD.
Am I the only fan who loves Touissant L'Overture?.......2007-03-09
Okay, if junk like Open Invitation, Hold On and All I Ever Wanted can be considered the Best of Santana, then I'm a conservative Jesus freak/NRA spokesman/anti-gay activist who's also an advocate of censorship. Of course, those songs are pure crapola, which means I canNOT be considered a conservative Jesus freak/NRA spokesman/anti-gay activist who's also an advocate of censorship, thank god. And while I'm moaning, where the hell is Touissant L'Overture? I mean, seriously, it's a friggin' masterpiece of a song, probably the best off Santana III. It's dramatic, but not bombastic. Or maybe it IS bombastic, and that's what makes it work. I don't have a freaking clue. Hey, I'm on a roll here, so where's Guajira? How about ANYTHING from Caravanesari or Love, Devotion, Surrender, which most compilations for some reason refuse to acknowledge even though it's one of his greatest albums - I'd put it at #3, behind Santana III and Abraxas, with Caravanesari coming in 4th. Both of those LP's rock (okay, they're more salsa/jazz fusion LPs, but you get the idea), and neither are given any acknowledgment. Come on, throw us fans of Santana's jazzier stuff a bone here! PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE? The Jugando/Carnival/Let the Children Play medley would've been the best from Festival, but they waltz over it as if it wasn't some of the most pure fun you'll ever have with Santana. WTF?
Nevertheless, if you're a Santana newbie, this might or might not be the ideal introduction, it DOES contain Jingo, Evil Ways, Soul Sacrifice, Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen, Oye Como Va, Samba Pa' Ti, No One to Depend On, Dance Sister Dance, Europa and Winning (his only listenable '80's AOR hit), after all. But really, anybody looking to get into the guy should start with Abraxas and Santana III, then proceed to the rest of the guy's first five albums (Santana, Caravanesari and Love, Devotion, Surrender), and they'd have the best Santana ever made. But again, this isn't a bad way to get acquainted with the guitar god we call Santana.
A Good Buy!.......2007-01-12
This is a very good CD. The sound quality was great and the music brought back memories. This is one CD that all Santana fans should purchase. The service that I received from Amazon was 5 star, and the price even better. Aloha
Santana: Energetic Rhythms.......2006-11-03
I really like Santana's energic rhythm, it makes me happy and brightens my day. I actually purchased this because of one tune I heard on the radio that strikes a chord within every time I hear it. That song would be EUROPA. This melody takes me to a lovely place, a journey through a myriad of memories and emotions.
The Best of Santana.......2006-08-17
This is a weird CD. For tracks 1-7, it is nearly perfect. Then, abruptly, tracks 8-12 suck big time -- very 80's and disco-ish. Then at track 13 it gets great again for the remainder of the CD. It's like a "Best of Van Halen" that randomly throws a block of Sammy Hagar tracks in the middle of a bunch of classic David Lee Roth material. Did Santana suck for a while and then get good again? Or is this CD just non-chronological? Whatever, it's a good CD, and it certainly has enough good songs to justify the price. You might want to burn it and cut out tracks 8-12.
