Customer Reviews:
randy rhoads, we hardly knew thee .......2005-09-13
so much promise. this cd is a really neat item that brings to life the early parts of randy's career. Too bad they wont release both full albums.... a highlight is his solo "laughing gas"
CAUTION: SPOILER _-----------------------------------------------
But the solo is a LOT like the one he plays on the live tribute CD during Suicide Solution. Not exactly though. the solo also seems to contain some early workings of the riff from crazy train and an early version of Dee. Pretty neat stuff. Four stars only because its not both complete albums
3.5 stars - Great music, so-so compilation.......2005-03-25
The Randy Rhoads Years. A compilation of early Quiet Riot material.
Contrary to what many people believe, Quiet Riot actually existed long before the Metal Health album. In their earier incarnation, the band featured Randy Rhoads, who would go onto short-lived fame as a guitarist in Ozzy Osbourne's band up until his tragic death. The band's first two albums, released while Randy was still in the band, were only released in Japan. But now a compilation of material from this era has been released in America! Read on for my review of The Randy Rhoads Years.
PROS:
At long last, some material from the Randy Rhoads era of Quiet Riot gets an American release. Roughly one quarter of these songs come from the band's self-titled 1978 release, another quarter come from 1979's Quiet Riot II, and the other half of the material is previously unreleased anywhere. For the most part, this set does a good job picking the best tracks from those albums, though there are some problems (more on that later.) Perhaps one of the most interesting tracks is Laughing Gas - a nine-minute-plus instrumental that showcases Randy's guitar skills. There are also some alternative versions of tracks that appeared on the albums - an acoustic take on Afterglow (Of Your Love) and a reworking of Mama's Little Angels entitled Last Call For Rock And Roll. Another good thing about this set is that it's priced low.
CONS:
WHY RELEASE A COMPILATION INSTEAD OF JUST RELEASING THE FIRST TWO QUIET RIOT ALBUMS IN AMERICA!? The two albums will fit on a single compact disc, and I think that would have been a much better idea than this. Because of this, the albums will remain elusive, and fetch huge prices on the black market. Likewise, this compilation is only about forty minutes long, despite the fact that you can fit eighty minutes on a CD! There is so much stuff from those albums that you're deprived of on here. And remember those reworking tracks I mentioned in the paragraph above? COMPARED TO THE ORIGINALS, THESE REWORKINGS SUCK. The reworking of Mama's Little Angels (Last Call For Rock And Roll) is actually pretty good, but it's a chump compared to the original version of the song. What really pisses me off is the acoustic version of Afterglow (Of Your Love.) Afterglow is my favorite Quiet Riot song, and this half-assed acoustic take doesn't do the song justice - you've gotta hear the REAL version on Quiet Riot II. Had the record label released the albums here instead of this compilation, I probably wouldn't have so many cons.
OVERALL:
If you're a Quiet Riot fan, or someone who liked Randy Rhoads' work with Ozzy, pick this up and discover the forgotten days of Rhoads. But take my advice - GET THE FIRST TWO ALBUMS, TOO! Although this compilation does a lot of things well (like the unreleased stuff), IT IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE ALBUMS IT REPRESENTS. The albums are very hard to find, but they're worth hunting down.
Excellent.......2004-07-27
this album, is perfect it has all of Randy Rhoads old stuff, if your a Rhoads fan, such as my self you'll really like this one. you might want to get some more albums that feature RR's stuff such as "Blizard Of Ozz" and "Diary Of A Madman"
Great compilation of the early Quiet Riot days.......2004-05-28
Well there are a good amount of people that don't realize that Randy Rhoads is the man that started Quiet Riot when he was 16. Metal Health was not the first album by this band. This album has some tracks from the first 2 Quiet Riot albums which were only released in Japan. Randy was a great guitarist in the '70s before joining Ozzy. I think the songs on this compilation are better than anything Quiet Riot went on to release throughout the '80s and beyond. Kevin DuBrow's voice is much more solid in these recordings. Songs like "Trouble" and "Killer Girls" were remixed and sound better than the originals. "Last Call For Rock & Roll" was originally "Mama's Angels" from Quiet Riot 1 and was re-made with new lyrics and basically turned into a completely different song that is only available on this album and I must say it's a great tune. If you want to hear some of the earlier works of Randy Rhoads and how Quiet Riot started out, this is a compilation well worth purchasing.
Great but...............2004-04-13
I wished, as everyone did, they just put out the 2 Japan only albums on CD, I wished they had put the oiginal "Slick Black Cadillac". My favorite from QR II. see in the US, Actually QR III should actually be QR V. I only have the secong LP on vinyl and the pressings, even mint have a bit of static. Still this is a Randy dream come true! GRAB this while you still can! "Killer Girls" is a great strip song!
