5 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2005-07-14

This is the best studio compilation of MSG. Avoid all the other slapped together ones that usually cost more. This album covers his pre-hair metal days with Robin Mcaully (sp?). That is okay, as there were only 4 or 5 songs worth listening to from that period anyways. The only really solid MSG album after 1985 was 1995's "Written In The Sand". A MASTERPIECE.

4 out of 5 stars Good compilation by a supergroup.......2004-04-07

I'll never forget when I bought a rare used CD at a local music store and my CD card was filled so I ended up getting myself another CD which was this one and I think that I made quite a good investment and I wasn't sure how good this band was although I was a fan of UFO and as it turns out, they're a good band but not quite as good as UFO.

Michael Schenker left UFO in late 1978 to rejoin his older brother's band Scorpions and recorded an album with them and surprisingly he auditioned for Ozzy Osbourne (who got booted out of Black Sabbath), Whitesnake and Aerosmith (it would be really interesting to see how well they could do with Aerosmith although it was their decline period) but he turned them down and formed his own band called The Michael Schenker Group.

My only gripe about this compilation is that it doesn't contain Victim of Illusion or Are You Ready to Rock and I didn't like the songs that featured Graham Bonnet (Rainbow/Alcatraz) for some reason although he was decent in Rainbow but if you're a casual fan of UFO or Scorpions, then you'll like this band and this CD is a great way to start off your Michael Schenker collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential MSG.......2003-09-13

I bought this cd to replace an aging cassette. Make no mistake, this ROCKS! This is a prime example of timeless rock & roll.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation (if you're into that sort of thing).......2003-03-22

Anything that presents Michael Schenker at his best deserves five stars. Any compilation, there are going to be disagreements about what gets included, but the song selection here is pretty intelligent. (Except- how could they include "Still Love that Little Devil"? I love Derek St. Holmes' voice, but that song doesn't even sound like it was written. It sounds like they were [playing] around in the studio with tape rolling.) However, I really can't recommend getting this as a substitute for having every one of the albums that these songs were drawn off of.

5 out of 5 stars It's really Essential!!.......1999-10-06

This is one of the few "Best Of..." that really has the best from a performer. MIchael Schenker is well represented in this compilation, with all the classics on it, with all his various band formations. GOod.

5 out of 5 stars A great selection of MSG tunes.......2005-08-03

In 1992 Chrysalis released a series of Essential CDs from some of their long time artists such as Robin Trower, UFO, & the Michael Schenker Group, among others. They really did a great job with all 3 of these artists, although it's tough to pick 15 or so essential songs from such great artists. Here are the track listings: Armed & Ready, Cry for the Nations, Bijou Pleasurette, Into the Arena, Attack of the Mad Axeman, On & On, Never Trust a Stranger, Assault Attack, Rock You to the Ground, Samurai, Desert Song, Captain Nemo, Rock Will Never Die, Still Love That Little Devil, & Don't Take It Out on Me. Among the tracks deserving of the title epic would be Cry for the Nations, On & On, and the best track of 'em all on here, Desert Song. Desert Song is truly an incredible song that you wish would never end. The songs are presented in chronological order too, so the first 4 songs are off Michael Schenker Group, tracks 5 thru 7 off MSG, tracks 8 thru 11 off Assault Attack, tracks 12 thru 14 off Built to Destroy and track 15 previously unreleased.
Tracks 8 thru 11 feature Graham Bonnett (formerly of Rainbow, and after this album was later in Alcatrazz and still later Impellitieri, and likely in other groups as well) on vocals. Of course there's some instrumental tracks on here. One of these tracks, Captain Nemo, used to get a lot of airplay on my local college metal station.
This is a great place to start if you want to get a great sampling of this band. I would also recommend the twofer albums by BGO (BGO also does this for other Chrysalis acts such as UFO and Robin Trower) that are out there. One combines the first 2 Schenker discs and another combines Assault Attack with strangely a live album instead of Built to Destroy. Strange because the live album was released after Built to Destroy and it would have made more sense to combine the 2 studio albums together. For some reason the Built to Destroy CD I have lists the song Rock Will Never Die as instead Walk the Stage.

4 out of 5 stars Really all the essentials.......2002-02-08

Perfect compilation if you want all the cream from that great guitar hero. My favorites are: Desert Song, Attack of the Mad
Axeman, Assault Attack, Samurai, Captain Nemo and Into the Arena.
Just for those six songs, plus maybe Cry for the Nations, which
was a big hit for him, it's worth getting a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The best-ever Schenker compilation.......1999-08-07

If you don't know anything about this sensitive and melodic metal guitar player, only buy this album. It will reveal to you why Schenker was once considered to be the "wunderkind" of guitar players.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for MSG fans last cut has never been released.......1998-12-23

If you want a complete history of this band for the glory years of '80 to '85 you have to have this cd. The last cut is a perviously unreleased from the "Built To Destory" seccions. Should you be a Gary Barden fan then you should enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars The CD is a great example of a great melodic guitarist........1998-12-17

As any talented guitarist can tell you from listening to this CD, Schenker's sense of melody, which instantly reminds me of Bach, and his precision guitar licks are nothing less than those of a very underrated virtuoso. "Cry for the Nations" alone is worth the price of the CD with its melodic solo, haunting lyrics and crunching guitar rhythms.
