    Album Description

Return to Metalopolis was the beginning of Chris Poland's solo career, after leaving multi-platinum artists, Megadeth, in 1987. The Return To Metalopolis disc has been a cult classic for years. Lion Music is proud to share with you the only known live moments on tape from the short-lived tour in support of this classic release. Recorded live in 1991 at the now defunct Mason Jar in Phoenix, Arizona, Return to Metalopolis Live is a chance for fans to see how this inventive material translated over into a live situation. The recording is as is and would be the beginning of the line-up that progressed into the band, Damn The Machine, who released their self titled disc in 1993 on A&M Records. Listening to Return To Metalopolis Live, shows how Chris' playing has evolved over the years, but it also shows that even back then he was pushing the boundaries of the guitar, with his trademark cutting tone and style. In addition to a couple of studio demo outtakes from past years, we thought it would be cool to include of OHM: performing a reworked version of the Metalopolis classic, 'Alexandria'.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, Virtuosic Instrumental Guitar.......2007-01-17

I had grown up listening to Megadeth, including the classic albums with Chris Poland such as "Peace Sells...", but for some reason had never checked this disc out. I am glad to finally rectify the situation, and to discover that Chris Poland is not only a virtuoso-caliber player, but that he seemingly held a lot back in Megadeth.

This album is a great "old-school" thrash-metal meets Joe Satriani instrumental guitar album; one that any lover of instrumental guitar will enjoy, and play often. Full of full-on shred cuts ("Club Ded") and also very tasteful and melodic, epic compositions ("Alexandria"), this album retains a tight, fast and very heavy approach that is, at times, quite progressive and ahead of it's time. Chris Poland's technique is amazing and acrobatic...it seems that there isn't a single modern guitar technique he hasn't mastered. I particularly enjoy his super-quick, fluid legato style and sense of drama and melody. A very, very underrated player.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic, intense and razor sharp.......2005-11-02

This is one of the few great "instrumental thrash" albums. What I find most interesting is the high contrast between Chris's razor-sharp rhythm guitar playing and his silky-smooth lead playing. The drummer (I believe it's Chris's brother) is simply amazing and sounds great. The only reason I've given this a 4-star rating instead of 5 is because, though the songs all have their own character, listening to Chris's somewhat long-winded solos can be tedious at times. His technique is so refined that his solos sound much the same, because he has his own style and is not just another replica. He doesn't sound like anyone else - he sounds like Chris Poland, and, though it may feel a bit stretched, it's definitely a good thing.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome metal instrumental album.......2005-03-27

Chris Poland proves with this album that he deserves to be at the top of the most musically talented guitarists of the 1980s. Each song is different in its own way. From the thrashy title track, to the jazzy Alexandria, to the fusion Row of Crows, this album is complete. The reviewer who gave this album one star is obviously not able to hear good music. Poland may not be the fastest guitar player on the planet, but his melodies and soul more than make up for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Metal Fusion cd! .......2004-10-21

Chris Poland and Megadeth should be credited for helping invent "Technical Metal" (having an influence on but not exactly being, prog metal) with their jerky rhythms and complex riffs on the first two Megadeth albums. After getting sober and deciding to strike it on his own in 1989/1990 (and ironically, recording with Megadeth on the demoes of Rust In Peace before leaving the Deth again- perhaps one day we can hear those demos!); Chris released this awesome solo album. Hints of Megadeth and the future Damn the Machine release are sprinkled throughout the album, which features some awesome shred guitar and fusion dynamics. The album begins with more of a metal sound and feel, and slowly adds more and more fusion chops and techniques to the mix, and by the end of the album the songs are pure fusion (albeit slightly more metallic in a certain way). Whether or not this was intentional I have no idea, but it creates for very interesting listening. The songs have hooks that slowly creep in, and I consider it a shred classic, even if its not on Shrapnel records! Get it now!

1 out of 5 stars YOU'V GOT TO BE KIDDING.......2003-09-11

These revieweres must have their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks or this is the first and only instrumental guitar CD they own. This is heavy metal dross at it's most infuriating. Yes he is fast. BUT he has absolutely no taste or talent, his tone is akin to a chainsaw hitting concrete and not nearly as pleasent. This CD is like snippets of every heavy metal cliche grouped together to form about 4 - 5 mins of the most repetetive noise. The drumming is almost as boring as the guitar playing and even the middle bits ( solos ) would be (junk) on any metal CD.
The obligatory accoustic guitar bit is also there and proves that he can't play that either. It sounds like someone practising
scales and shredd like chords, when a drummer walks in.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-10-08

it's nice to hear an instrumental metal album that consists of something other than some loser john petrucci wannabe (cough, rusty cooley, cough) sitting in his bedroom at his mom's house in front of his computer alternate picking the same tired scales that we've been subjected to for the past 20 years over pre-recorded drums.

chris completely destroys the competition with long flowing melodies, astonishing song structure, and his signature legato passages that make all those lame shredders look like they're running in slow-mo. his brother also proves to be a worthy drummer, as they compose some very cool syncopation between the guitars and drums. "the fall of babylon" is by far my favorite song, but this is honestly one of those rare discs that you can listen to all the way through and still want more. that being said, the two bonus tracks are not up to par with the rest of the cd, but they're cool to listen to once.

the bottom line: this is seriously the most overlooked instrumental metal album ever recorded. i've heard them all, and this is what they wish they could be.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Poland : "Return To Metropolis 2002".......2005-03-18

        ***** - FIVE STARS
        ==================

I never realized how talented C. Poland was until I heard this. He is so much better than his days in Megadeth would allow, and here he let's loose. This is a highly melodic journey from start to finish, with crunching riffs underlying great solo's that are woven over the top of the riffs. His brother, M. Poland supplies impressive percussions that fit into this style perfectly. These two brothers are highly talented musicians....

To describe this, it's galloping riffs sound like early day Iron Maiden, and the solos remind me alot of guitarist J. Matheos and old-school Fates Warning, along with similarities to Coroner's Tommy T. Baron, which focuses on a soaring, bluesy feel....

No vocals, but you don't need them here, the music speaks for itself. All in all, making one incredible release. The production is also flawless. I can't wait to buy his entire collection. He's a wizard axeman...

        5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2003-02-03

I got into Chris Poland because I liked his guitar work on the two Megadeth records Killing Is My Buisness, and Peace Sells. When I heard this album I was blown away. I never knew how good he was. This album is a stunning piece of instumental guitar and I have heard it all. I have heard Vai, Satriani, Friedman, Becker, Vaughn, Yngwie, Clapton and many more. I have to say that Chris is my second favorite among that list only behind the guitar master Jason Becker. Chris has such a clean and beautiful style and this is a perfect complimation of his skill. The bonus tracks on this version are awesome as well, enpecially that 14 minute jam session. If you like instrumental guitar albums I cant imagine you not liking this. If you have not heard Chris Poland's Return To Metalopolis you are really missing out, buy it today.
