    Product Description

Ratt's signature sound encapsulates anthem-heavy hard rock embellished with irresistible pop hooks and killer lead vocals. After making a name for themselves with hit "Round and Round," the band went on to have monumental successes with "Back for More" and "Wanted Man." These and more are included here!

    Album Description

RATT emerged out of L.A.'s era-defining hard rock/heavy metal scene in 1984 with the monster hit-and MTVstaple-"Round And Round" from their Atlantic debut album Out Of The Cellar. That multi-platinum disc also delivered RATT classics "Back For More" and "Wanted Man," both included here, and branded the band's signature sound: anthem-heavy hard rock embellished with irresistible pop hooks and Stephen Pearcy's killer lead vocals. RATT went on release four multi-platinum albums and became one of the biggest American bands of the '80s. As original members Pearcy, Warren DeMartini (guitar), and Bobby Blotzer (drums) reunite for their first tour together since '99, Rhino's new, career-spanning RATT compilation is essential listening.

Along with Motley Crue, Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister, Ratt was one of the main players of the '80s glam metal movement. Although many of their songs lacked diversity and emotional poignancy, their guitarist Warren De Martini possessed the flash and technical ability to escalate the group above most of its peers. Out of the Cellar is by far the band's best record, but between the blazing solos and call-and-response choruses are many lackluster moments. What saves it from the bargain bin, however, is the quintessential metal anthem "Round and Round," one of the greatest three-or-so minutes in '80s rock. --Jon Wiederhorn

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best 80s metal albums...period.......2007-06-23

When one looks at 80s West Coast metal, the bands that usually come to mind are Guns N' Roses, Van Halen, Motley Crue and to a lesser degree Poison. And what of RATT? Many people may say, "oh yeah, I remember them. What ever happened to RATT"?

What happened to RATT is that they sort of evolved backwards. Whereas Motley Crue, a peer of RATT, released a string of good albums throughout the 80s, reaching the top of the rock world by the decade's end with "Dr. Feelgood," (1989) RATT sort of blew their wad early on. Because RATT ended their career (before a reunion) on such a low note with the mediocre "Reach for the Sky" (1988) and the horrific "Detonator," (1990) it's easy to forget that when RATT started out, they were, no doubt, absolutely one of the best bands to emerge from the 80s sunset strip scene.

"Out of the Cellar," (1984) RATT's first album, following the "RATT" EP, (1983) saw the band reach its critical, commercial and artistic climax. While "Out of the Cellar" may not be the most ground-breaking album of all-time (it's sort of like a Van Halen--KISS--Judas Priest stew) the album sure did rock. Loaded with killer hooks, infectious sing-along-choruses, great guitar work (courtesy of virtuoso Warren DeMartini and Robin Crosby) and just really superb finely-crafted songs, "Out of the Cellar" is easily one of the greatest hard-rock releases of the 1980s.

One of the things that makes "Out of the Cellar" so great is that the band sounds hungry, on fire--youthful. Singer Stephan Pearcy is by no means a great (or even good) singer, but his charisma and eagerness to rock compensated for his lack of vocal talent. Guitarists Warren DeMartini and Robin Crosby may not have been Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai, but they were still pretty damn good--and their dual arsenal of killer hooks and solos were better than most of what their peers (like Motley Crue's Mick Mars) had to offer. The songs also have a real edge to them, so on "Out of the Cellar" RATT sounds as though they mean it, not like a bunch of poseurs going through the motions.

While "Out of the Cellar" is known mostly for its massive hit "Round and Round" and to a lesser extent "Lack of Communication," "Wanted Man" and "Back for More," there really isn't any filler at all on this album. "Out of the Cellar" packs ten powerful punches, going straight for the jugular, not once ever losing momentum. Some of the band's more underrated songs like "I'm Insane" and the closing epic "Scene of the Crime" (which can be seen as a prelude to Motley's "You're all I Need") are easily as good as the hit singles.

Although the first few follow-ups were pretty good, RATT unfortunately never matched the brilliance of their debut. Still, what a debut it was. If you are a fan of 80s rock/metal, "Out of the Cellar" is an essential album to own.

5 out of 5 stars A classic of early west coast Metal.......2007-04-29

Ratt might only be considered just another "hair metal" band of the 1980's, but this came out in 1984, long before the term "hair metal" was born. In fact, during this time period, a number of metal bands were coming out of California, and hitting the pop music charts like a hellion. This was such an enjoyable time of "pop" music, as not only did we have some great Metal bands on the charts, but some great RnB such as Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, plus some great New Wave such as The Cars and Blondie, and some other great one hit wonders and pop music forces such as Duran Duran and Madonnna. Plus we still had some great bands of the 70's such as Yes, and Rush crossing over to the use of synth. music. There was so much to choose from (unlike today's Pop with Nu Metal bands that sound like every 1000 other bands, Punk-pop, and Boy/Girl bubblegum pop that we thought died in the mid 90's. OH, back to Ratt's "Out of the Celler" Every track on this CD is excellent, and I consider it a great Classic of Metal. Even though by todays standards it is tame, it still is a pleaurable listen, and Ratt might have been one of the better West Coast (later termed hair Metal) bands of all time..ENJOY

    4 out of 5 stars A Glam Metal Classic.......2006-11-17

More trebly than the Crue (and with way less make-up), the mischevous rockers from Ratt put out this classic album back in 1984. More than anything, its a paean to fast and direct rock and roll. There's no pussyfootin' here; lyrics don't deal with anything transcendant ("She Wants Money" is about a girl who wants money... who would've thought?) and the riffs keep on coming. Yes, on one level, there's nothing redeeming about this sort of approach. On another level, one can appreciate the absolutely rockin' guitar stylings embodied by the band. From the fast "I'm Insane" to the pop rock classic "Round & Round" this album packs a nice rockin' wallop. Any fan of 80s rock must have a copy of this in their collection,

Here is a great example of one of the greatest failures in rock n' roll history. Ratt (the original Korn misspelling a word in a band name) failed to write memorable songs. Yeah, Round and Round is still played on the radio but that's for comedic entertainment purposes.

How can you take a band seriously whose bnad members have names like Warren Demartini and Bobby BLotzer?

Lets explore the musical failures of ratt in this worst of album:

You Think You're Tough - Terrible riffage, too bad Stephen thought he was tough but really wasn't.

Round and Round - Yep, they went round and round and got nowhere

Back For More - Yeah, more bad songs. Terrible songwriting!

Lay It Down - They should've laid their instruments down and call it a day

    Body Talk - Sucks

Way Cool Jr - Terrible song title and no, Ratt is not cool!

I want a woman - Yeah, not some little girl. This song is terribly written.

Shame, Shame, SHame - They should''ve known better than to write this crappy song.

Heads I Win, Tails You Lose - Its more like Heads I lose, Tails I lose cuz thats how you can summarize ratt best.

Avoid this Cd unless you need some laughter. It works best on Labor day.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars- Great hits compilation.......2006-06-17

Back in the 1980's when glam/rock-metal ruled the world, my friends and I stayed away from that scene because the big teased hair and make-up seemed kind of gay and it's seemed like a parody of itself, but still I secretly did get into a handful of songs by those kind of bands. It seemed like most of them sounded almost exactly the same. All my friends liked the progressive and classic rock groups like Jethro Tull, Kansas, Old Genesis, Yes, Moody Blues, Foreigner, Journey, Alan Parsons Project, and the real metal groups like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest. I did like some of the hits of Ratt (some of my friends did like a couple of their hits too) but liking a few of their songs wasn't enough for me to really fully become a Ratt fan. I thought the songs "Round and Round", "Lay It Down", "You're In Love", "Back For More", and "Way Cool Jr." were basically good but nothing that I thought was great enough to go out and fork out the dough for. But in the early 90's, I bought this greatest hits compilation RATT AND ROLL '81 to '91. Until about a week ago, I don't recall ever playing it before, but last week I dusted it off and played it on my car cd deck and really enjoyed most of the 19 tracks on it. There are a few songs that I don't like but I really liked about 14 or 15 of the tracks. I think I played "Lay It Down" about 7 times in one day. Man that's a rocking tune. The guitars sound great at the start of it and all the way throughout. I know everyone (including me) thinks that De Martini is really great but I don't think Robbin Crosby was too shabby either. I think they should have respected Crosby a little more because I heard some interviews with him and I think he was pretty soured by the way they treated him. I think that might have contributed to his heavy drinking and heroin addiction, but on the other hand, Crosby shouldn't have been jealous if someone like De Martini came along to outshine him. There's always someone who will come along that will be a better guitarist than you, and basically, life's too short to let that ruin your life. It's too bad about his fatal overdose a few years back but that happens a lot in the rock world because drug use is like breathing to a lot of rock stars. Of the glam scene I do think looking back on it, that Ratt was one of the top bands of that period. Now that those days are over with, for some reason, I'm checking into the hair bands that I hated in the mid to late 80's, and kind of wish that I would have hung around the glam rock crowd because they did seem to have a fun time back in the day. I would wholeheartedly recommend this because almost all of the tracks are very good to great, and being that it's close to 78 minutes in length, it's worth buying at least from one of the used Amazon sellers. They have a used copy in very good condition that's selling for $4.44 at this present time of September 1st 2006. If you just are looking for a single cd best of compilation, this is one of the best I've ever found. Just buy it!!!

With just one EP and one full-length album, (1983s "RATT" and 1984s "Out of the Cellar") RATT became one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Wasting no time, RATT returned to the studio after a massive world tour and released their second album "Invasion of Your Privacy" (1985).

RATT's second album pretty much is cut from the same cloth as the debut. It's the same sort of David Lee Roth-era Van Halen meets KISS meets Judas Priest formula that is apparent on "Out of the Cellar." Compared to the debut, however, the songs here are not quite as edgy and sound more polished. While "Out of the Cellar" was sure to have pleased Ozzy and maybe even Metallica fans, "Invasion of Your Privacy" seems to be aiming more for the mainstream. This is apparent as RATT goes into power-balled territory with "Got me on the Line." Some of the edge and momentum from the debut dwindled somewhat as the lyrics on "Invasion of Your Privacy" are far more cliche and cheesy than they were on the debut, i.e., "dangerous but worth the risk."

Even if "Invasion of Your Privacy" is slicker then its predecessor, however, it's still a fine album. Much like the debut, RATT's sophomore outing is loaded with great hooks, awesome solos and the song-writing is generally pretty strong. The hit singles on this album, "Lay it Down" and "You're in Love" rank among the best of the entire 1980s pop-metal genre. The rest of the album, while not as strong as the non-singles on the debut, is still enjoyable, if not all that memorable.

While "Invasion of Your Privacy" hasn't aged well, it's still worth owning if you are a fan of 80s hard-rock/metal.

4 out of 5 stars "Well turn around, remember me".......2007-01-27

It's amazed me, in retrospect, that heavy metal was able to produce some great love songs without the melodies sounding sappy and the lyrics gooey. They could even use the word "love" without rolling your eyes (well, that was the case for me).

"Invasion of Your Privacy" is not only Ratt at their best, but a great representation of 80s metal. The first three cuts - You're in Love, Never Use Love, and Lay It Down - are my favorites and never fail to bring a smile to my face as it gets me to thinking I was only 9 years old when I heard them for the first time (and on wonderful vinyl!). I'm just shaking my head thinking this album is over 20 years old! Time sure does fly!

Truth be told, I wasn't a mega-Ratt fan, but I loved this album and it's on my short list of albums to add to the collection. - Donna Di Giacomo

This to me is Ratt at their very best, I cant find one bad song on here, all of them are good. The songs that desearve a lot of attention are 'Your In Love', Lay It Down', and 'What You Give Is What You Get'. It is worth all the money, so get this one as soon as possible, you'll be glad you did.

    4 out of 5 stars RATT's most underrated album.......2007-06-29

RATT's third album "Dancing Undercover" (1986) sounds a lot like the first two; Van Halen/KISS derivative hard-rock with a lot of impressive, screeching solos, songs concerning sexual escapades and melodic, sing-along choruses. This time around, however, while the writing is still strong, the songs have a certain looseness to them. The album's hit singles "Dance," "Slip of the Lip" and "Body Talk" have a certain swagger, a groove that makes them utterly irresistible. The rest of the album is also quite good, if not as strong as the singles.

"Dancing Undercover" is probably RATT's most underrated album, and I would rank it my second favorite of theirs right after the classic debut "Out of the Cellar." This isn't mold-breaking profound stuff here, but it is good, solid 80s rock. There isn't a lot of filler or obligatory generic power ballads on "Dancing Undercover;" in fact, there are no ballads at all. This album is ten songs worth of dated but totally fun, infectious pop-metal that fans of the genre will love.

"Dancing Undercover" has the advantage of not having any of its singles played to death on 80s comps or "retro-lunch" radio programs, so for those that love 80s melodic hard-rock, listening to this album will be a fresh and rewarding experience.

    4 out of 5 stars a good example of 80's hard rock.......2007-01-26

Beau Hill's production may have made this album sound a bit slick, but regardless, it's shows a band at the top of their game with tight musicianship and hook-laden songwriting skills. It's not in my opinion the best album in the Ratt catalog, but it's still a solid effort. The guitar interplay between Warren DiMartini and Robbin Crosby is always interesting to hear, even if the overall sound could have been a bit more raw -- kind of like on Ratt's debut EP and first full-length LP. Still, if you're a die-hard Ratt fan, this album will find a way into your collection.

    4 out of 5 stars 4.3.......2006-09-29

My 2nd Fav. RATT CD! Right behind the obvious "out of..". Great riffs here and a thick groove adds to most tracks. Great sounding as well. Best songs are "Looking for Love", "Slip of the Lip" and "Drive me Crazy". But there is little fluff material on this cd. Must have Ratt.

3 out of 5 stars Why come out of the cellar just to hide undercover?.......2006-08-30

Ratt here produced a hardrock album that is quite interchangeable with so many second tier bands of their time. LA Guns and Motley Crue are both prime examples of similar contenders. However where Crue produced Dr Feelgood to shift themselves to another place, neither LA Guns nor Ratt managed a similar trick.

But it ain't all bad. Solid riffing and vox that aren't great but at least suit the music and the whole album riding a hard rock, down and dirty groove are three things that it has going for it. Lyrically this is party hard rock with no excuses for wanting to have a good time all the time. With more luck this band could of taken off - I mean this is a better album than Motley Crues Theatre of Pain and on a par with most of Girls Girls Girls. Rather amusingly the band actually had a song on the soundtrack to the weird Eddie Murphy movie The Golden Child - Body Talk.

Beau Hills production fits the music here, not totally clean and teflon coated but actually suited to the bands Ratt 'n' roll sound and the overall feel is that the band by this stage were seasons professionals doing a job. Yet that is also part of the problem. The hard work didn't pay off and even by this stage Ratt were consigned to also-ran status unalbe to come up with the killer tune to breat the big time or generate the excitement the Crue did even when their music sucked.

80's fans should pick up this and Reach for the Sky as they are the two best and most accessible tunes of the genuine Ratt years (ie ignoring reunions etc) and they ain't half bad slabs or party rawk rock.

5 out of 5 stars Reach For The Sky-Classic Ratt Rock!.......2007-06-23

If you like Ratt then you'll love this classic Ratt album. One of the first six albums by the original Ratt. All tracks are pure Ratt-N-Roll.

2 out of 5 stars This is where they lost me.......2006-06-01

I had been a fan of this band from the EP, but this release changed my attitude. The pop overtones that began to leak from Dancing Undercover really come to the forefront. Perhaps it was the polished production, or the poppy chorus to 'I Want a Woman.' And although their musicianship became clear with the bluesy 'Way Cool Jr' that song was just too much of a departure for my taste. Otherwise, nothing stands out on this album- all the other songs had the same tone and there was no variation to Pearcy's vocal range- not that he ever had range. Same old, same old. I longed for the heavy stuff like "Wanted Man" or "You're In Love", but there is none of that on this album. They were clearly out for radio play here, and it shows badly. More Warrant than Megadeth- a bad move.

    4 out of 5 stars A solid album.......2006-05-30

This is Ratt's fifth album. This isn't like the straight forward raw heavy metal of there Out Of The Cellar days but still a good pop metal album. Overall the album isn't very consistent with some great songs, some solid songs and some filler songs.

1.City to City- 10/10 A great opener. The riff is great and the lyrics are cool. Pearcy's vocals are enjoyable and the guitar solo is excellent. The chorus is very catchy too. This should have been a big hit. An underrated classic.

2.I Want a Woman- 10/10 Another great catchy song. This was a minor hit on MTV. The riff is catchy and the chorus is good too. Warren DeMartini's solo is great and the harmony line is excellent too.

3.Way Cool Jr.- 8/10 The albums only real hit song. Not one of the better songs but still a good song. This song is slow and bluesy. This actually reminds me a bit of classic Def Leppard. The guitar solo is excellent too.

4.Don't Bite the Hand That Feeds- 10/10 A great song with a good heavy riff. The chorus and vocals are good too. Another great guitar solo too.

5.I Want to Love You Tonight- 10/10 An excellent power ballad. This should have been a hit. Stephen Pearcy's vocals sound very good. The soft part is excellent and the chorus is awesome. The guitar solo is excellent and has a ton of emotion and a great harmony line.

6.Chain Reaction- 9/10 A great fast song that reminds me of Van Halen. The riff is excellent and the chorus is catchy too. The solo is one of the best on the album too.

7.No Surprise- 7/10 A pretty good song. I don't really like the chorus but it's not a bad song. More great lead guitar though.

8.Bottom Line- 8/10 A good catchy song. the riff is good and the chorus is catchy as hell. The solos are excellent too. A good song but not a classic.

9.What's It Gonna Be- 10/10 A good catchy pop metal song. I like the riff and chorus a lot on this song. Another excellent solo too

10.What I'm After- 7/10 This is a pretty good song although it is really poppy. More great lead guitar too.

Overall the album isn't very consistent with some great songs, some solid songs and some filler songs. Maybe the bands most commercial album. This was not there most succesful album but it did have some good anthems and a suprisingly good power ballad. Warren DeMartini solo's are great as always and this is a solid hair metal album although it is probably the bands worst album with the classic line up. I think if they had spent maybe another few months on this album it would have been a classic because there is plenty of great songs on this album

    Stephen Pearcy- Vocals
Warren DeMartini- Lead Guitar, Backround Vocals
    Robbin Crosby- Guitar, Backround Vocals

4 out of 5 stars Not as bad as other reviewers make it out to be.......2006-02-25

Reach For The Sky is no "Dancing Undercover" but it still good. It kinda lacks a little in the middle of the CD though. Still some awsome songs are on this disc.

"City To City"-10/10: Great opening track, one of my favorite Ratt songs

    "I Want A Woman"-10/10: Another great song

"Way Cool Jr."-10/10: The biggest song on off the album, great song but the video kinda sucks

"Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds"-7.5/10: Here is where it starts to lack, this song has grown on me even though the first couple listens I hated it.

"I Want To Love You Tonight"-4/10: If you like ballads, listen to "Given Yourself Away", this one isn't that good

"Chain Reaction"-7.5/10: see "Don't Bite The Hand That Feeds"

"No Surprise"-4/10: I never liked this song that much

"Bottom Line"-9/10: Now we're starting to pick up agian, this one had to grow on me a little, but it is better than tracks 4 and 6

"What's It Gonna Be"-10/10: My personal favorite song on this album, I love this song as much as any other Ratt song such as "Dance", "Wanted Man" etc.

"What I'm After"-10/10: A close second to the previous song, and a great way to end a decent album

    1 out of 5 stars Weak Ratt.......2005-08-20

Ratt is a group with such energy and awesome riffs and lyrics, but this cd surprised me because it's so weak and almost lame. All good groups seem to have a dud and for Ratt this one is it. I wouldn't suggest this cd to anyone unless they just want to complete their Ratt collection, as I do.

2 out of 5 stars The only Detonation was RATT's career.......2007-01-25

This album was the final blow (no pun intended) to RATT's fabulous career in the 80s. Cellar, Invasion and Undercover were all fantastic albums, Reach for the Sky started to show signs of problems and by here it was all over. Desmond Child is a fantastic producer but not for Ratt, they completely lost any 'punch' or 'rawness' they had in their previous records. People would argue that Ratt had an overproduced sound already, this is partially true, but out of all the LA Metal bands, these guys had the rawest sounds, with the dual guitar attack of Crosby/Martini, the rock solid rhythm of Croucier/Blotzer and the raw, raspy vocals of Steven Pearcy. This album lost the guitar attack, with really only one guitarist remaning (and it shows), severely softened rhythm section lacking overall groove and vocals that although didnt sound horrible (apart from attempts at ballads) weren't up there with the heaviness of previous Ratt albums. It's too glossy, too overproduced. It doesn't fit into a genre properly either, with its 'metal' label, 'pop' stylings and 'hard rock' feel. I suppose Pop Metal is a good term, but I hate that because it goes against everything metal stands for. RATT were a Hard Rock band at the very least.

There is not one song on this album I rave about, 'Loving you is a dirty job' has it's moments, definately, but when I listen I hear too much of the stuff Desmond was doing with Alice Cooper and Bon Jovi at the time.

Overall, it's not the worst album I've ever heard, but for Ratt it's too glossy, too polished, and the irony is that they were aiming for more radio play with an album like that but the opposite happened with them losing the sound that got them on the radio in the first place.

    Dissappointing.

Not under 13 just using this not to sign up.

1 out of 5 stars The end of an era!!.......2007-01-17

After three incredible albums: "Out of the cellar", "Invasion of your privacy" and "Dancing undercover" and later the good "Reach for the sky" then comes the final nail in the coffin for one of my favorites in the 80's. Detonator is the synonimous of pop metal in the worst and out of ideas. In this album, i feel a tired Ratt, pushing themselves hard to make an stand out album, after the "Reach for the sky disillusion". For me "Detonator" is one of the worst album in the 80's. Try the first four albums and the "Ratt" ep. You won't regret it!!!

4 out of 5 stars VERY Underrated Album By An AWESOME Band.......2006-11-12

I've seen this album get really bad reviews and it ticks me off. It's criminally underrated, as has been said before by others. While it sucks that late guitarist Robbin Crosby was unable to get more of his input on this disc, it's chock-full of very rockin', memorable songs. From the intro of "War In D/Shame, Shame, Shame," Detonator is heavy rocking and it just keeps you listening intently throughout. Highlights are "Hard Time," "Can't Wait On Love" and "Givin' Yourself Away" (with some terrific and very DIFFERENT vocal styling by Stephen Pearcy on the latter). I wouldn't say this is my *favorite* Ratt album, but it gets a good, solid 4 stars out of me.

2 out of 5 stars The end of the line..........2006-05-13

First things last: Who's giving this record four and five stars? I'm a big Ratt fan, all the way back to the E.P.
But this just isn't a good album. They'd resorted to outside writers by this point, because their main songwriter (Robbin Crosby) from their salad daze couldn't write killer songs anymore. I always liked "One Step Away", but even that's a little too clean & polished for Ratt n'Roll. Easily their worst full studio record of the five...

    3 out of 5 stars Ratt - 'Detonator' (Atlantic).......2006-03-29

Originally put out in 1990,as this was Ratt's fifth album. Not as good as,say their previous efforts like 'Out Of The Cellar' or 'Dancing Undercover',but still decent '80's metal.Tracks that sort of stand out are "Shame,Shame,Shame","Lovin' You's A Dirty Job","Heads I Win,Tails You Lose",the catchy "All Or Nothing" and "Giving Yourself Away".Almost sorry to have to admit, that THESE days Ratt is a band that more or less is washed-up.Ever since guitarist Robbin Crosby(R.I.P.)had exited the group after the release of this lp,it was strictly down hill from there. It was nice to have Ratt around on the arena rock touring circuit, from like 1984-89.Their current line-up is nothing to write home about.

    5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!.......2006-07-21

Yes, it sounds different from the old polished sound that you are used to. Probably, because Beau Hill didn't produce this one. Either way, it's good to hear good ol' classic hard rock by a band that did not give in to all of the weekly fads at the time and try to copy Nirvana or Stone Temple Pilots. Personally, this is one of my favorite Ratt cds. It's definitley got a rawer, more stripped down to basics sound, but that's alright by me. Quality garantee, it's free of any grunge and rap-metal pollution!

2 out of 5 stars Sad To See The End Has Come For This Group.......2006-06-22

BTW Im 34 and haved lived through alot of the 80's rock and metal scene. And Ratt and Crue was some of my favs. But then it seems like the "GRUNGE" came along and took all of that away. But back to my review. I will say that for me this was the last attempt for a comeback for the band even though some of the key members are missing that made up alot of Ratts sound. As for Pearcy's other groups "Arcade" thier first release was the only good one. Im not even going to say what my views are on his solo project. It makes me sick to see someone make a mockery of the songs that was remembered by all us "Old School Rockers" and i think he should just hang up preforming and maybe go into produceing.

3 out of 5 stars One guitarist does not cut it...AND IT SHOWS!.......2005-08-17

By the time Ratt released this self titled cd in 1999, the original lineup of Pearcy, Crosby, DeMartini, Crocuier and Blotzer were no more. In fact, they had not been "anything" throughout the 90's...period. Ratt disbanded in the early 90's, as they, like many of their collegues, fell victim to Grunge and it's wrinkled-flanel wearing fans. After Cobain and his band, Nirvana broke through, the anthem-driven "Hair Rock" of that generation,as well as Ratt, quietly packed their Jackson and Charvel guitars neatly away in their designated cases and left town on nothing more than a whisper....that was it...done...or so we thought.

Fast-foward to 1999. After an attempt at a "comeback" CD, that did absolutely nothing, the self titled Ratt, received almost no-promotion and/or airplay. Over the Edge was played on our rock station for about the first 2 months, then....that was it. But, it really wasen't a "comeback" at all. The only ones left in the band were DeMartini, Pearcy and Blotzer. Crocuier and Crosby were left out of the loop...AND IT SHOWS! Bigtime! After all, if one listens to the first two albums, you can tell where the strength in songwriting came from...here's a hint, it didn't come from the remaining members. Crocuier left due to frustration with the Ratt pack and Crosby, by this time was ill from HIV (he fell victim to Heroin addiction and a bad needle). Although, Crosby was initially included in the plans for a reunion, it was decided by "the powers that be" that his talents were not neccesary. AND IT SHOWS!

Now, before all the DeMartini fanatics start plotting my death, let me explain. I am not bashing Warren at all. I think he is a great guitarists, for that genre. And I am not talking about who is better than whom. We all know that Warren's "solos" fit that style better than Crosby's (although the "King" had some great solos of his own), what I am talking about is the Songs. Most songs that co-written or written by Crosby and/or Crocuier were strong, punchy, and very well structured..with all due respect to the others in the band. But perhaps, the most noticable fault with this release is the absence of another guitarist, be it Robbin or anyome else....AND IT SHOWS! Sorry....no matter how good Warren is, he cannot pull the entire guitar load by himself...it just doesn't work (which is why he asked John Corabi to join as the second guitarists, i'm sure...). Yes, there is such a thing as overdubs to make it sound like two rhythms, but if the same guitarist is playing both parts, it still sounds like one guitarist. I saw Ratt for the previous cd/tour...and they were TERRIBLE with a capitol T! Horrible! Pearcy was literally HANGING from the microphone and leaning on the mic stand cause he was very drunk, and Warren was trying very hard to be two guitarists, and wasen't cuttin' it. You could see he was fumbling with the parts that he once shared with Crosby. So, my theory comes from first hand, they need two guitarists.

As for the album, it was written with the same feel as the others, while trying to capture the newer alternative sound. Some songs work, some don't. About the first 6 are decent, after that it's a mudslide all the way to the bottom. Songs like Live for today, Over the Edge, Gave Up Givin' Up are typical Ratt, Catchy-pop oriented Riffs with that sunny California feel, and they are good tunes, but there is something missing...and I think I already covered that matter in great detail...

    4 out of 5 stars QUACKTASTIC.......2005-07-23

I'm not really a kid, i just use the kid review so i dont have to get an amazon account. Anyway, I give this album 4 and a half stars. The sound is really up-to-date but still has the classic Ratt feel. Stephen Pearcy still is as good as ever, and Warren DeMartini has some nice stuff going too. The three main EXCELENT songs on here are Over the Edge, We Don't belong, and Dead Reckoning. So in conclusion, you should buy this CD for five bucks used like I did. You'll be glad you did. Theres a sweet fold out mini-poster too.

    1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing........2004-09-24

I love Ratt and regard all other releases as at least good if not excellent. This is a huge disappointment. It was Ratt trying to be whatever they felt they needed to be in the "modern" era and trying to redefine themselves rather than play in the classic Ratt style. The vocals and drums are still there... but gone is the crisp classic Ratt guitar sound and the well blended rhythm guitar work. Warren De Martini instead wants to blues up the band. Not a good thing. The solos are utterly forgettable and saturated in blues style rather than rock style... some of the songs might be good, but its hard to tell given the bad, lackluster, low energy guitar sound that drags down the entire effort. Ratt used to be very upbeat and melodic... neither of which can really be used to describe this album. Its all roll and no rock. They got songwriting help from Great White's Jack Russel and I believe Jack Blades as well... and, honestly, I think Ratt was better off writing themselves and needed no help (Come on, Ratt's collection of best songs beats Great White and Night Ranger combined). Listening to this CD makes me tense and aggitated. I think it is a blemish upon their legacy. Shame on DeMartini for destroying Ratt. I would give this a zero if that were an option. I own thousands of CDs and this is definitely in the bottom 50 or so.

5 out of 5 stars The first complete opera to have survived in a fine recording.......2005-11-01

Opera grew out of the court festivals of late sixteenth century Italy. The nobles were quite interested in all the arts and employed skilled painters, sculptors, poets, and musicians. There was also a great deal of interest in reviving all things Greek because they were seen as the ideal model for all things intellectual. Reviving Greek music involved a great deal of conjecture and imagination because only a few fragments of their music survive and it is by no means agreed upon, even to this day, what they actually mean. One of the groups of Florentine intellectuals surrounded a Count Bardi, which he called the Camerata. They wrote letters to each other, so we have some idea of their thoughts about what it was they were trying to do.

They called what they did the "New Music" or the "Second Practice" and music students learn to call this style monody (solo voice with simple accompaniment). It caused quite a furor among those who were proponents of the older style of counterpoint. One of those who opposed Monteverdi was a fellow named Artusi. Every music student reads his articles against those composers with "smoke in their heads". And of course, Artusi always comes out on the wrong side of history and made to look the fool. However, the art of these composers was shocking and their free use of dissonance compared to the rules of Zarlino and the practice of Palestrina, Ockeghem, Josquin, and others is jarring. However, we have a hard time hearing the difference in these musical styles unless you pay close attention and develop some familiarity with what the argument was all about.

Some of these Second Practice composers came to believe that the Greeks sang their plays from beginning to end. This is almost certainly not true, but the point was they believed it. Composers such as Caccini, Peri, and Monteverdi developed a style of solo singing they felt captured this idea and called it the "stile rappresentativo" (the representative style). It is this recitative style that Caccini and Peri used in developing their art. When you listen to Peri's "Euridice" you will notice that most of it is a very expressive version of what we would call recitative - the almost spoken parts between the arias - and that the aria as even Monteverdi developed it a few years later is almost nonexistent. If you understand that they were trying to recapture the Greek storytelling that they believe was a sung style, this makes a great deal of sense.

In fact, this kind of work was not called "opera" until the mid-seventeenth century (opera simply means "work" as in a work of art). Before that term came into general use, the composers referred to their works as musical fables or music dramas. However, our referring to all of it as opera makes sense given the genealogy of the art form.

Peri's "Euridice" is the first surviving opera we have in complete form. His "Dafne" came first, but is now lost. Caccini was a court rival and was working on his own version of "Euridice" and at the first performance there was apparently a mix of the two composer's works. But the nod is given to Peri and Caccini published his own version, but he completed his version later. It is interesting the Monteverdi also did a version of this myth, but called his "Orfeo".

This is a beautiful recording of this work. It is important to know that even though the complete opera in printed form survives, there is a great deal that is not in the score. A great deal of scholarship and artistic sensitivity has to go into recreating a version of this opera that both succeeds musically and has some claim of authenticity to Peri's intentions for performance.

You will also note the vocal style has nothing to do with Verdi or Wagner. This was for a much smaller hall with only a few hundred of the nobility present. And while it was first performed for a wedding festival and did not please those for whom it was written, it began a four hundred year development of an art form that millions adore and consider to be one of mankind's great achievements. I am one of them.

Enjoy! There is a very helpful booklet with these disks to help you understand the history and the libretto is provided in English and Italian.

4 out of 5 stars Complete opera at mid-price.......1999-03-18

As Peri's Dafne of 1598 is largely lost this work of 1600 counts as "the first ever opera" (CD Box). With Gloria Banditelli as Euridice obviously this is a subtantial release for lovers of early opera.

Recorded in Bologna in 1992. Full libretto and English translation. Total time 101'40.

3 out of 5 stars Ratt - 'The Essentials' (Warner).......2005-12-25

The title notes these are the 'Original Master Recordings'.Are they sure about that?Quality seems to be a bit lacking here.Don't get me wrong,if you liked Ratt in their prime like I did, this twelve track compilation shouldn't let you down too hard.We get four tunes from each of Ratt's first three albums.Personally,I haven't heard "Dance","Way Cool Jr." or "Heads I Win,Tails You Lose" in sometime now.Pretty much aimed at Ratt completists.

2 out of 5 stars Waste of manufacturing time..........2003-10-16

First of all, I have to give this collection at least 2 stars because it is RATT after all and there are some great tunes here. But in general, the Essentials series sucks. They try to put the big over-played radio tunes and leave out killer album cuts and fan favourites. They only have two tracks from Dancing Unvercover, my favourite Ratt release. The material from Detonator is the slow ballad crap and not the really high energy stuff. What a disappointment. Do yourself a favor and buy Dancing Undercover. If you still don't like Ratt after listening to that album, you never will.

4 out of 5 stars Ratt 'n' Roll Never Sounded So Good!.......2003-07-22

This album was released by Warner Strategic records as the first comprehensive Ratt "greatest hits" release since the 1991 release of Ratt 'n' Roll. To me, it was about time a release was made with remasteerd audio. But, it is a travesty that the release was promoted by no one. The cover art is not even available on the Amazon site, which tends to be the sign of a not very well promoted release.

So, lets review the album. The material on the album is well chosen. Most of the tracks, however, appear on Ratt 'n' Roll. Ratt 'n' Roll also features far more tracks than the Essentials does. But, having both, I must say that the audio quality of Essentials far exceeds that of Ratt 'n' Roll. But, Ratt 'n' Roll isn't exactly a production nightmare either.

So, what should you do? Well, one thing you shouldn't do is complain that another best of album was released. One of my many pet peeves is reading reviews by both paid record reviewers and fans saying that an album was bad because it was "just another" or a "pointless" greatest hits release. Greatest hits releases are for fans that are going to see a band in concert and want to get to know the songs they probably will hear or for casual fans that don't want to buy 10 albums to get the select few tracks they will listen to regardless. Personally, I own all Ratt's albums. I still buy greatest hits because to me it is a lot easier carrying a travel bag with 20 greatest hits recordings in the bag rather than 200 CD's to get the songs I want to hear with me. So, stop complaining.

My advice is simple. If you are looking for great music in today's audio quality, Essentials is for you. If you want to get the best compilation of Ratt material, buy Ratt 'n' Roll. If you just want to complain about greatest hits albums, buy all Ratt's albums. There's not a bad one in the bunch!

3 out of 5 stars Decent Overview, but..........2003-05-03

I'm not sure which release the other reviewer was listening to when he said "the sound quality will blow you away". I have Ratt and Roll 8191 and the only major difference I find is the recording level is higher on THE ESSENTIALS release. There is still an audible distortion crackle after the first note of BACK FOR MORE. This should have been cleaned up if it had been remastered properly.

I am not happy about the way The record companies slap on a digitally remastered label and call it good, without really spending much time making the recording sound cleaner with less errors.

I believe the CLASSIC MASTERS series from Capitol Records outshines the ESSENTIALS series hands down.

5 out of 5 stars The sound quality will blow you away!.......2003-01-30

Unlike many other reviewers, I actually like a lot of these 12-track Essentials compilations. Unlike some of the Millennium Collection discs (how can you possibly capture the essence of Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart or Chuck Berry in 11 or 12 measly tracks) the Essentials discs tend to represent artists who didn't exactly take the world by storm. In the case of Ratt, who needs more than 12 tracks?

I have owned the Ratt & Roll 81-91 compilation for many years, but I am definitely selling it now that I have this Essentials collection. The difference in the sound quality is astounding! The remastering process has brought new life to these songs. I was blasting this disc in my car the other day, and I couldn't believe that some of these tracks ("Round And Round", "Back For More", "Wanted Man") are almost 20 years old! They sound incredible.

In some cases, I agree with the other reviewer that more tracks are better than slightly improved sound. However, in this case, the improvement in sound quality is anything but slight. And, of the 7 tracks you are losing from the Ratt & Roll 81-91 disc, the only ones worth caring about are "Lack Of Communication" and "I Want A Woman". The others ("Tell The World", "You Think You're Tough", "Slip Of The Lip", "Shame Shame Shame" and "Nobody Rides For Free") are mediocre at best, and are really no big loss.

If you want only one Ratt disc, this is the one for you.
