The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

A great live CD. Not the best choice of songs really, but buy this just for the version of "Just Cos You Got The Power".

MY FAVORITE MOTORHEAD ALBUM OF ALL TIME!!!.......1999-06-28

I bought this one on tape when I was about 14 years old. It made me a Motorhead fan instantly. Here I am now, 10 years later, still a thriving Motorhead fan. I'm not usually a fan of live albums, but this one is special. Motorhead is a great band to see and hear live (and I HAVE SEEN AND HEARD THEM LIVE.) If you are a Motorhead fan at all, than you should definitely have this one in your collection.

Reviewing live albums is a bit dishonest. Afterall, a review of a live performance should be of a live performance, and I wasn't there. That said, I have heard the RECORDING of the performance and here's what I tell you. The key to enjoying this record is to listen around the music. Lemmy's wisecracking delivers a personalized performance to legions of head-bong-ers strewn about incense-soaked, black-lit, end-of-the-hall dormrooms on the eastern seaboard. (Speaking of black light, listening to No Sleep conjurs images of leatherbound and denim-clad Finnish teenagers stagediving through a thick, midnight blue mirrorball haze of the best Turkish blondesmoke... Uh, that didn't come out quite right). Between sneering his lyrics, Lemmy manages to cough up such petulant aphorisms as: "Everybody born and everybody dies. And we shoulda died a long time ago. But we didn't... we're still here"; "This next song was a big hit for us! Ha, yeah. I've got 10,000 copies at my house"; "it's too f*cking hot in this frozen country"; and my favorite - "This song is new song that we have NEVER played in Finland before. Isn't that exciting! Yes, it is! No, it isn't. Well I don't give a f*ck, we're gonna play it anyway." I have actually put this disc on simply to hear the verbage between songs, and that's something you don't get with Frampton Comes Alive! You may be thinking "Hey, bub - whaddabout da music?" Well, like I said, I wasn't at this show, but it sounds like a characteristically high-energy, volume=11 effort. Production is good, songs are played faithfully to studio cuts, and the set list checks out. But it's the spoken word that sets this record off.

They're not bonus tracks.......2006-05-26

Although the remastered reissues claim to feature 2 bonus tracks they are NOT bonus tracks to the original CD release, on GWR, in 1988. That featured two tracks - 'Stay Clean' and 'Metropolis' - additional to the LP and cassette version but had them in their rightful places in the set ('Doctor Rock/ Stay Clean/ Traitor/ Metropolis') and not tagged on to the end of the LP version, which we have here. In addition, the artwork in the reissues is likely taken from the GWR CD booklet rather than the original: it is thus a little fuzzy and scaled down in comparison, although it does add some contemporary press clippings. The reissues may be remastered but my ears can't hear it on this particular title and personally I've yet to be convinced that any album needs a remaster when it had a contemporary release, 'Orgasmatron' being Motorhead's first CD release for a new album. Generally Essential/ Sanctuary have done a great job on the reissues of the back catalogue, particularly the new 2CD sets with live tracks and BBC archive material, but this is their weakest effort and I would suggest tracking down the original. In terms of SQ, I personally hear no difference between the original and the remaster.

This is one of the first Motorhead albums I bought, way back in '88. Not a bad live album. Though the sound quality isn't that great, there's a good selection of songs. Standards like "Ace of Spades" and "Overkill". Also included is one of my favorite MH tunes: "Just 'Cos You Got the Power..." (I couldn't find the original version until I got the re-issue of Rock 'n' Roll).
If you're a big Motorhead fan you should pick this up. It's Rocks! \m/

Full Title - The Columbia Albums Of Irving Berlin Vols. 1 & 2. Composer, conductor, arranger Frank DeVol scored more than fifty movies and is best known as the composer for the theme songs for the TV series 'My Three Sons', 'The Brady Bunch' and 'Family Affair'. In the 1940s DeVol was an arranger for Dinah Shore, Tony Bennett, Rudy Vallee, Vic Damone and Doris Day. Frank DeVol received multiple Emmy Awards and Academy Award nominations for his extensive body of work. Irving Berlin's medleys featured are 'Always/Remember', 'A Pretty Girl/Isn't It A Lovely Day' and 'Say It With Music/Cheek To Cheek'. 24 tracks. Collectables 2003.

Supposedly the band themselves were not happy with how this album turned out, which is hardly surprising as it sounds suspiciously like a bootleg recording. Still, this IS Motorhead, and while this could sound better, I'd still rate it higher than 99% of the dreck masquerading as "hard rock" now! Considering how many other live Motorhead discs are available you may want to pass on this one, but you could do worse than this.

I purchased this recording when it was released through the Musial Heritige Society in the old LP format. It quickly became one of my favorite Christmas recordings. When released as a CD, I did not hesitate to purchase a copy in that format as well. The orchestrations are crafted with creativity and richness that breathe new life into traditional Christmas favorites. This CD should be in every listening library of seasonal music.

I concur with the reviewer from the San Francisco area. I purchased this from the Musical Heritage Society a number of years ago and have been awaiting its appearance on CD. Thank you ASV for reissuing one of the best Christmas Albums ever.

The arrangements of these carols are stunning and listeners will be pleased that they stray from the beaten path too often taken by large ensembles doing this type of material. Listeners I think will also agree that the playing and singing are excellent. The album has just the right mix of vitality and reverance befitting the spirit of the season.

This albums deserves a spot on record shelves and in listeners' hearts along with the Bernstein/Mormon Tabernacle "The Joy of Christmas" and Ormandy's "The Glorious Sound of Christmas."

My parents first bought this collection when it was in record form--it was one of our family's favorite albums and we played it constantly throughout the Christmas season. When the record started to wear out, we couldn't find a copy in CD form in the United States. Not to be deprived of such beautiful music, my brother finally found a small music store in Washington, DC that special-ordered it from England.
