Album Description
"Winter Carols" features familiar favorites, new songs including "Christmas Eve" and even their unique interpretation of The Rednex "Wish You Were Here". Each track is a magical, velvety blend of lush orchestral arrangements, organic Renaissance instruments, guitar mastery and ethereal vocals. Listening to "Winter Carols" is like sitting next to a roaring fire with a glass of cherry brandy as the crystalline snow blankets the earth outside. Let Blackmore's Night be a part of your holiday fantasy!
Customer Reviews:
I wish they played in my town..........2007-07-20
I have adored this band since a college friend played "Shadows of the Moon" for me. I like to play their albums as I drive to my volunteer job at the Renaissance faire. As a rule, I get tired of Christmas music way before the big day but I could listen to this particular collection a long, long time.
Love it!.......2007-04-08
I'm a huge fan of Christmas music, and this CD is one of my favorites.
Blackmore the Raider.......2007-03-01
This is quite a nice little holiday album, I must say. It would have gotten a five star review, though, if it had the splendid sounds of an electric guitar demolition as a coda to the whole thing.
This is a Great Album!.......2007-02-15
This album was as wonderful as I had expected. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there were 2 things that annoyed me on the album.
1. The word Christ was never uttered in any of the songs. They changed all the traditional lyrics that mentioned "Christ" and replaced them with vague references. If they don't want to mention "Christ", perhaps they should go with less religious Christmas carols like "Deck the Halls" or "Here We Go Caroling".
2. I am not the biggest fan of "Wish You Were Here". I was disappointed to see they had included it on this album since it has nothing to do with Christmas. I would have loved to see them include "Greensleeves" instead. That way the song would have fit on the album AND they wouldn't have to mention Christ! :)
Overall, I do highly recommened the album to all, not just Blackmore's Night fans.
Just good music........2007-02-04
Although I am a big Blackmore's Night fan, you don't have to be a BN fan to love this cd. I have played this cd when my in-laws were around at Xmas and Thanksgiving. They made comments on how beautiful the music was and would sing along to the songs they knew.
Candice's voice is simply beautiful and blends in so well with the musical arrangements played by the band. I cannot say enough about how great this music is. I only hope that they will come out with another Xmas album in the near future. This is by far my favorite holiday album ever.

Twisted Sister - 'Twisted Christmas' (Razor & Tie) .......2007-06-10
Review no. 60. I'll give this CD a four-star rating for effort alone. I mean, when I first heard about this ten track release in advance, I really didn't think that Dee Snider and crew could pull it off. Glad to see that I was wrong. Wanted to catch Twisted Sister last time they were in my town but I didn't get to go. If I ever get to see them again, I really would like to hear them perform one or two of these cuts even on a summer tour. Tunes I was impressed the most with were "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", the rocking "Deck The Halls" and "The Christmas Song". Personally, I think even patrons that don't usually like metal would enjoy this disc to some extent. A should-have.
I LOVE this Christian music christmas album!!!.......2007-05-07
Twisted Sister BRINGS the christmas feeling year round. (This is a CD to be listened to at any time of the year.) When I listen to it, it makes me feel better. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" are my favorite songs. Overall, it is an excellent CD. Now, if Twisted Sister would just make another Christian music christmas album for Christmas 2007, then I would be overjoyed.
I loved it.......2007-04-25
I think this album contains my favorite version of "O Come All Ye Faithful." Seriously.
Yeah it's crazy, it's kooky, and it's twisted.......2007-02-15
The Good
"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" starts off as if the group has softened in their old age. Eventually someone reminds them who they are and the Christmas classic gets pumped up. They even add a Ramones inspired section at the end. "O Come All Ye Faithful" sounds just like "We're Not Gonna Take It;" from the main riff to the note-for-note solo. Twisted Sister's version of "White Christmas" is a far cry from Bing Crosby's. The chugga-chugga riffing and blazing solos are just one of the many differences. A voice from the past is resurrected for the power ballad version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Dee Snider trades vocals with 80s metal queen Lita Ford on this one. It's almost as if "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Clause" was meant to be a metal song. Everything just falls into place. "The Christmas Song" has sort of that "Burn in Hell" vibe to it.
The Bad
"Heavy Metal Christmas," set to the tune of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," is kind of lame as the 12 gifts are replaced with metal clichés.
The Verdict
Yeah it's crazy, it's kooky, and it's twisted, but it's also really fun and enjoyable for 80s metal fans.

A tour de force of guitar players Steve Vai has known rock around the Christmas tree in this must-have Yuletide album. Vai, who began his career as a member of Frank Zappa's band and in more recent years has been David Lee Roth's partner in crime, transcends both roles by playing matchmaker between a few of our more inventive (albeit overlooked) guitar slingers and some of the best-loved Christmas carols. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer's proboscis has never glowed quite so brightly as when Kenny Wayne Shepherd cranks up his guitar and takes us down an edgy blues journey. Eric Johnson's clear-as-a-Christmas-bell tones are a joy to listen to in his rendition of "The First Nowell." The standout, however, is Jeff Beck's haunting and emotional "Amazing Grace." --Jaan Uhelszki
Customer Reviews:
Stone cold masterpiece.......2006-12-12
Let's face it; a lot of Christmas music is overfamiliar, if not outright boring. Whenever Jose Feliciano's "I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas" vomits out of the radio, I "wanna" run screaming from the room. "Merry Axemas" comes to the rescue, shredding the cobwebs with hurricane force. Familiar music is completely deconstructed and reimagined in a thrilling way, as world-class rock guitarists reinterpret songs we've all heard a million times. The passion and virtuosity takes my breath away; it's like hearing the melodies for the first time. I believe the apex of the disc is Joe Satriani's "Silent Night/Holy Night Jam." I rate this disc in the same category as the Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack, Phil Spector's "A Christmas Gift For You," and "Rockin' Little Christmas." This is timeless music; no "1001 strings" or Fairlight synthesizers to date it. Highly, highly recommended.
Rocking Stocking Stuffer.......2006-02-25
This (along with vol. 2) has become my favorite Christmas music. Some of it is just fun, some of it serious, all of it great! My favorites are "Joy To The World" and "Happy Xmas War Is Over). Combining Christmas with great guitar work is Heaven on earth.
Perfect for anyone who loves guitarists.......2004-11-11
What an absolutely fantastic album. It's so good that I have had to buy it three times, as the other two CDs mysteriously "vanished". Oh well, if I had low morals, I'd steal this, too. The mood of this album vascillates, as it starts off full swing in the holiday spirit, with a pretty literal version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. But my favourite track is Eric Johnson's "First Nowell". I'm a wee bit biased, as I think he is the greatest modern guitarist. But it truly is an extraordinary composition. It is in fact quite intricate, and he manages to incorporate his own flavour into the melody without destroying the structure of the piece. Which cannot be said for Joe Satriani's "Silent Night", which goes on a tangent of accousitcally illegible meanderings. Joe Perry does a fantastic job with "Blue Christmas". It is almost two songs, the first an homage to the classic version, with almost an Hawaiian tiki feel, and then he rips off the leis and the hawaiian shirt, and shows that underneath he has black leather pants and a ripped t-shirt and absolutely shreds it. I knew my 90 year old grandmother would like the first part of the song, and then the second part came on, and she said "Oh, my". Hilarious. Alot of the songs take you by surprise that these heavy metal guitarists can be so expressive. Kind of gives you a new insight. Who knew that Ritchie Sambora could be so eloquent? It ends perfectly, with Hotei's version of "So This Is Christmas". Like alot of the other reviewers, I listen to this year round, and this album is my absolute favourite "holiday" compilation. Buy it, if you don't like it, sell it to me, as someone will invariably steal my third CD of this album.
Guitar Heroes Do Christmas.......2003-09-14
Eleven guitar heroes join together to cover Christmas tunes in their own personal way. This gives a rockin' twist to the standards. From the first few notes from Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" you'll now that you're in for melodic delight. Everyone is here from Steve Vai, Satch, Beck, EJ and the BSO.
Highlights include "The First Nowell" from Eric Johnson. He starts us off with an acoustic rendition before stepping over to his electric guitar and wowing us with his fancy finger work, but nothing so flashy as to take away from the original work. As always, EJ's tone is right on and after a couple of his patented licks and runs he turns the tune into his own. The Brian Setzer Orchestra rocks Christmas with a swinging version of "Jingle Bells". The horns blare, and Brian gives us that Rockabilly fell on his Gretch. After checking out this upbeat tune you'll never know how it could have been any other way. Hotei comes in with a good rendition of Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". Jeff Beck gives a haunting performance on "Amazing Grace" pulling out his trademark bends, dives and swells. His take is very beautiful and fitting to more than just Christmas.
For anyone looking for a little less traditional take on Christmas music, or if you're a guitar junky, don't miss celebrating Christmas without this axe-ful album. You may even have to spin this disc in July.
Well-rounded Guitar Rock Christmas Collection.......2003-08-15
You can listen to this CD is August... you just might feel a little silly at a stop light with the windows down and "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" cranked up to 11. Just take a look at the line-up of guitarists on this CD. You won't find anything like that anywhere else.
There is a lot of great stuff, but Steve Morse has the real stand-out track on this collection. "Joy to the World" indeed!
The Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Brian Setzer tracks are fun to listen to, and you can even sing along if you're into that kind of thing. Eric Johnson and Steve Vai each slow it down and do some great work on their songs.
A couple of interesting excursions away from Christmas come from Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani. Beck does an inspiring rendition of "Amazing Grace", but as far as I remember, that's not a Christmas song. And Satriani's "Silent Night/Holy Night Jam" begins and ends with the "Silent Night" melody, but there is a whole other trademark Satch jam in the middle that doesn't sound much like Christmas.
The disc kind of grinds to a close with a few clunkers. I liked Joe Perry's sloppy blues-y "Blue Christmas", but I could do without the last 3 songs. Alex Lifeson goes with too much synth and, of all things, a drum machine on "Little Drummer Boy". Hey Alex, don't you know a pretty good drummer who could have helped you out a bit?

Must Buy for Any Juggalo/Lette.......2006-02-01
The title says it all. If you're a Juggalo/Lette and you don't own this... then get it MCL!!!
good, but wouldn't buy.......2004-12-17
These are two really good christmas songs by ICP. The songs themselves would both earn 5 stars but its really pointless to buy this when both of them are on Forgotten Freshness 1+2. But if you have the extra money it'd be cool to show it off I guess.
Silent Night...Violent Fight.......2003-02-19
This single is short but sweet. Its usually cheap too, so I say its worth the price. Now, I know these tracks are already featured on Forgotten Freshness volumes 1 & 2, and the original Carnival X-Mas ep, but if your a collector, which you problably are since your reading this, you will want this in your collection. I would recommend the original but it isn't very easy to find these days since its basically out of print but you can catch them on the webstore(if your lucky).
'Santa's A Fat Bxtch' is the bomb diggity, a humorous track but a classic. When I say classic, I mean old school "I remember those days..." classic. It serves as a good song to sing when you and your homies are bored or whatever.
'Red Christmas' is the last track and is fatter then your mother. Hehe just playing. This song is phat though, its a good track but nothing outstanding.
My words of advice are to buy this or get buyed. Foe real.

The worst of ICP I'd say. It's rare though, so it's straight. Annoying in a way, but good for the x-mas season. Only for Juggalo's.

Product Description
The Northern Californian alt-metal group Papa Roach consists of Coby Dick, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Tobin Esperance. They formed in 1993 and began releasing EPs soon after, including 1994's Potatoes for Christmas and 1995's Caca Bonita. By 1996, the group replaced original bassist Will James with Esperance and hired a new manager; the following year, Papa Roach released their first full-length album, Old Friends From Young Years, which became a surprise hit on local radio. The band's regional success led to more prominent gigs, including dates with Suicidal Tendencies, Sevendust, and Powerman 5000, and a deal with Dreamworks Records, which released Papa Roach's second album, Infest, in early 2000. The album went triple-platinum thanks to the success of the single "Last Resort." Two years later, frontman Coby Dick opted to go by his given name of Jacoby Shaddix. A second album, lovehatetragedy, appeared in June 2002. That same summer the band joined a number of rap acts including Ludacris and Xzibit on Eminem's Anger Management Tour.

the good ole days.......2006-01-25
i remember seeing them live at 3 oaks community center...it is a shame they didnt release this a long time agi..they could have gotten somethign for it. now all the got to do is release the "real" version of tight rope of the last demo they made..plus the 5 tracks deep cd...which was stolen. even though the band members arent still around this cd is still good. its a shame they made it big...they rarely came back to vacaville
without a doubt their best.......2005-08-14
What!? The band from my hometown that currently puts out retarded melodic poppy albums actually has a good CD? Believe it or not, yes. The band members have obviously lost their mind by abandoning their older style that appears on this, their first release (released in 1994). And what's even more stupid is the band apparently was upset because this was released without their permission! And apparently they aren't making money off of this. This is one reason I encourage people to buy this album, because I absolutely DON'T want to support this band, they put out too much gay heartthrob music now. So, do the band a disfavor and buy this album now.
The closest band that can be compared with this CD is Nuclear Rabbit, whom they kind of rip off (and whom Toby, the vocalist, has said was an influence on their music), though this album (well, demo technically) is more alternative/grunge/garage rock sounding, but also with funky guitar playing and bass slapping/popping. This music is much more fun, care-free, interesting, energetive and with less restraints than there current awful sonic dissatisfaction. I Love Babies is by far the best. If you think that their newer releases are better than this CD, than something is wrong with you.

its good..........2004-08-06
I do enjoy this cd...it sounds nothing like what your known papa roach sounds like. But i would also say do not buy this. Lik emany of the other reviews say..the band did not approve of the release of this cd. It is a copy of their first album. If you want the tracks jsut download them...as said by teh band. Entertaining to listen to...very energetic...and different...but dont buy it ...not because its bad...because the band doesnt want you tooo.
CHEERS!.......2004-08-04
I want to thank the fan that said DO NOT BUY THIS!!!! i am on my knees begging along with them i love Papa Roach and would love nothing more than to own this album but i checked it out and it's true it is NOT endorsed buy the band and there getting nothing!!! out of the pure respect i have for the best band of earth, if you just wait the band will endorse and redo the songs themselves, i DID NOT!!! buy this, i beg you all to do the same.
Papa Roach fans Do Not Purchase this cd!!!!.......2004-07-26
I am begging Papa Roach fans to not purchase this album. Why you may ask? Because this cd is not endorsed by Papa Roach at all, it is the recordings of Papa Roach's first cd but in no way are they recieving any of the profits made by this cd. This cd is being released through a corrupt producer who stole the old recordings they originally did so he could make his own profit, Papa Roach had said it themselves that they would you rather download Potatoes for Christmas then buy it. If you want proof please visit their official messageboard at www.brokenh.com to hear it from their own mouths. I have also strongly urged amazon.com to discontinue the sale of the cd as the "producer" is making a profit on someone elses stolen property.
Please i beg you again if you love Papa Roach as much as I do, do the right thing and do not purchase this cd

Great CD!.......2004-12-14
This is a fantastic CD if for no other reason than Drunken Boat's cover of Bob Dorrough's (remember "Schoolhouse Rock?") "Blue X-mas." It really rocks and is timely even now. Or especially now. I was surprised to see that I could still by other (very rare) Drunken Boat discs on this site. Happy listening.
Put it in your stocking.......2004-12-02
This is a very good Christmas album. It features alternative rock acts (circa 1991). Almost all of the performances are good. The Crash Test Dummies version of "The First Noel" is the best version of that song that I ever heard. The Hoodoo Gurus do a great instrumental version of "Little Drummer Boy". Henry Rollins does the creepiest reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" ever. Every other performance is good, with the exception of "Blue X-mas" by Drunken Boat, which stinks. This CD is long out of print, but if you can find a used copy of it, it is worth getting.

Music was Great! Vocals was not my style...........2007-07-27
I beleive this cd could be almost perfect if it was with better vocals.... Maybe its not my style, i dont know, but when the singer keeps on shouting and anyway when u can understand anything of what he s saying then it becomes tiring and sometimes boring! Especially if u re a bit older maybe its gives u some headache!:)
Anyway its a really good effort with really Nice music!

ok this album is one of the most well balanced i've ever listened to. it's definitely an aquired taste, the first time i listened to it i ended up skipping all the ambient wierd tracks just to find all the heavy ones. so a warning to anyone looking for a super heavy converge-esque band, you're in the wrong neck of the woods sugar bear. but if you're looking for an album you can listen to over and over on long car rides and sleepless nights, purchasing this little diddy will make you a happy camper. the heavy tracks on this cd don't sound like converge at all, honestly i can't pinpoint what they sound like because i'm a such a n00b but what i can tell you is they're groovy as balls. every time "sleeping with snakes" comes on i always find myself doing my head bob side to side dance (you'll know what i mean when you hear the song) and i don't even want to talk about "skull storm" because it's so good it makes me upset. and as for the ambient tracks i used to label them as filler. but if you give this album a good listen from start to finish, you'll realize they couldn't have made it sound good any other way. it almost gives it a godspeed feel with the some of the long samples and it makes listening to the album a much deeper and memorable experience. i also feel like christmas's diversity is so fitting that it's widely up for interpretation and is a different beast to everyone who listens to it. so if you're down for a crazy, heavy, meditative, sluddgy, brutal, ambient, groovy listen. pop in christmas by old man gloom and i can guarantee you wont be dissappointed.
"Ambienced to Death".......2007-02-16
[...].
I think it would be pretty appropriate to call this album disjointed. As noted, it consists of a TON of ambience bits, which are not even very good. The songs follow the general pattern throughout the album of heavy sludge - ambience - heavy sludge. And the thing of it is, it really feels like there are only a couple of actual songs on this album, Volcano, Gift, and the first half of Christmas Eve (which is excellent). All the rest seem more like outbursts of awesomeness, done as soon as they begin.
This album is almost a rip off, and I have to wonder if these guys were just being cheap or something. The only really developed songs are Volcano and Gift, and Gift is probably my least favorite heavy track on the album. All of the rest of the "songs" basically go like this: Start out with great riff, then end. The songs are not developed, and I get the distinct impression these guys didn't work particularly hard on this album. Take, for instance, Valhala. Starts off with a great riff, plays for a bit, then switches to another riff, then static for a bit, then the "song" is over. And its truly a shame because the beginning showed real potential. The riff feels so undeveloped its almost criminal. If there's one thing I hate, its bands coming up with great riffs and then playing them for 30 seconds.
And the last song would be fantastic, except it seems to build and then instead of climaxing, ambiences (incredibly boringly, too) for the last half of the song.
The ambience is definitely background music. Feel free to do other things while listening to it.
I could probably bear the ambience, but the actual songs are so undeveloped, that using the skip button on my player, I'm done listening to this in under a half hour. (It might be under 20 minutes, I'm not sure--it certainly seems like it) There is not a whole lot here. Perhaps if they had spent some time making proper songs to go along with the noise, I might have given this even 5 stars, possibly. As it is, there are 2 1/2 songs, maybe 3 with all the short ones counted together.
Personally I don't know how this is really "different" for Aaron Turner, he is obsessed with ambience, just about any side-project he has ever done has had plenty of it. I guess maybe the "different" part for these guys is to include as few songs as possible. After all, "different" for Turner (heck, the guy from Cave-In as well) would be to actually play straight up heavy music.
This really needed to be an EP.
Bautifully Heavy and Wonderfully Creepy.......2005-09-27
I'd like to start out by saying that idiot boy (not just a clever name) isn't listening to this album in the right manner. I agree, for just listening to a random very very heavy song, "Gift" or "Volcano" work perfectly. But Christmas was not meant to be listened for just the heavy tracks. If you actually sit down (preferably at night with the lights off playing a Silent Hill game) and listen to it you realize it is not just random ambiance. It is carefully orchestrated to inspire unease, among other things, as the nearly eight-minute long track "Accord-o-Matic" performs all too well. What that reviewer failed to realize was that even though the members come from already awesome bands like Converge and Isis, Old Man Gloom is NOT CONVERGE OR ISIS!!!! If it were just their other bands mashed together, it would sound unoriginal, uninspired, and very trife. Simply put, if I want to listen to Converge, I'll listen to Converge, and Old Man Gloom is not Converge. This may come as a shock, but when members of bands come together to form a new band, they usually do it because they want to try new things, experiment with different sounds, and they accomplish that beautifully. If you like those other bands, you won't get that in Old Man Gloom, you get something disturbingly beautiful instead that shouldn't be discounted because most of the tracks aren't heavy.
music with ambiance.......2005-04-15
a very fun and interesting album from members of three bands that are helping shape all good heavy music
