Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", this is a fine anthology of three decades of American music, taking in everything from Joan Baez's "Blowin' In The Wind" to Aretha Franklin's "Respect", The Mammas and The Papas' "California Dreamin'" and Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson". Here also is Scott McKenzie with "San Francisco", plus Jefferson Airplane, the Supremes, Lynyrd Skynrd and many more. Like American Graffiti (1973), this is one of the great pop soundtracks, happily at home in just about any music collection. --Gary S. Dalkin

Doesn't look accurate.......2007-05-10
I don't own this soundtrack but I've seen the movie a ton of times. I don't see Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" on here. It was playing in the scene where Jenny almost committed suicide by standing on a ledge at some hotel. And "Stoned Love" wasn't even in the movie. Isn't this supposed to be a soundtrack for a movie, not the "best hits of...?"
a great soundtrack!.......2007-03-29
i was so happy with this soundtrack - almost every song on here brings back memories of a great time. you can sing along with everything, and it has music for every mood.
Deja vu all over again.......2007-02-20
A gem of an anthology, a definitive compilation of some of the seminal rock songs of the 60s and 70s. Each song is so evocative of the era. This 2-CD set is like a precious timecapsule. This is the CD I'd bring with me to a desert island.
AWESOME!!! AWESOME!!! AWESOME!!!.......2007-01-11
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS ALBUM! IT HAS TO BE ON MY TOP 5 FAV ALBUM LIST. BUT FORREST GUMP IS HANDS DOWN MY FAV MOVIE. THE 2-CD SET IS FULL OF AWESOME CLASSIC ROCK AND ROCK TUNES...NOT A BAD ONE IN THE BUNCH. EVEN IF YOU LOVE 1/3 OF THE MUSIC FROM THE MOVIE, BUY THIS 2-CD SET. YOU WILL BE PLEASED!
Forrest Gump Original Soundtrack.......2007-01-10
It was a huge delight to find this CD on my first try. My grandson, age 9, has listened to the one I have in my car sooo many times that he asked for it as a Christmas gift. Amazon has a 5 star rating in my book. Deepest thanks for your easy shopping, quick delivery and fair price.

Need a quick trip to somewhere else?.......2007-06-26
If you need a quick getaway this score will take you there. This is my favorite score from my favorite movie and I'm not sure which influenced the other most. Track 1 - "I'm Forrest . . . Forrest Gump" will immediately turn a day around for me, it is a strange song that calms the spirit and instills confidence at the same time; much like the rest of the score. Great for background music at work! The soundtrack is a great collection of classic hits but it doesn't take me where the score can. Just an incredible work of art!

Funny reissue of a "Classic" soundtrack... Why?.......2006-10-28
I loved Forrest Gump since the first time I saw it in a cinema, even when some people considered it as a "Soap Box-Opera" movie. And kept watching it over and over again, every time is on TV. So I got the soundtrack as soon as it was on the record stores, because the 32-Hit selection made it a "Classic" almost automatically. However, in 2001 the same soundtrack is reissued as "34 American Classics On 2 CDs". This is, those crazy guys in Sony/Columbia Production Dept. decided to add two extra songs, Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" and Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty". However, they never considered to add The Doors' "Love Her Madly", even when the song was included in the original movie audio track, as well as other wonderful songs... Why???? I agree with "fendercustomstrat": this soundtrack should have been issued as a 3 or 4-CD boxed compilation... The extra bucks for having all those beautiful songs together, would be worth the price!!!
Dodgy reviews.......2006-03-17
Hi all, I've just been reading through the reviews and saw one that made me laugh at the stupidity of some: this one was credited to a guy who calls himself Music Man - so to quote verbatim
"THIS MAY BE A GOOD SOUNDTRACK, BUT WHAT THE HELL..I'VE SEEN THIS FILM A HUNDRED TIMES, AND I NEVER FROGOT THAT SONG WHEN HE WAS RIDING IN THE HELECOPTOR ON THE WAY TO VIETNAM.I COULDNT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE SONG AND FORGOT WHO THE ARTIST WAS.SO I SEARCHED ON THE CRAPPY INTERNET.... FOR OVER AN HOUR MY POOR TUSH HURTS, AND I FOUND NOTHING, AND IT'S A CLASSIC SONG!!!!! SO I THOUGHT TO MYSELF MY BROTHER MIGHT KNOW, SO I SAID TO HIM, REMEMBER FORREST GUMP WHEN HE WAS IN THE HELECOPTOR AND THE SONG WENT "THERE MUST BE SOME WAY OUTTA HERE" AND IMMEDIATELY HE SAID JIMI HENDRIX, ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER.... SHAME SHAME WHOEVER PUT TOGETHER THIS SOUNDTRACK NEEDS TO BE SMACKED UPSIDE THE HEAD.. WHO WOULD FORGET JIMI, AND THAT BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC SONG. NOW I KNOW, NO WONDER I COULDNT FIND IT. IT AINT EVEN ON HERE! AFTER ALL THOSE CLIPS I LISTENED TO. WASTE OF TIME, PLUS WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT TO JIMI FANS" -
so Music Man, you've seen the film a hundred times and you've never forgotten the song, however, in the next sentence you counter that statement by saying that you have indeed forgotten it, or at least who the artist was! But alas, later in your tirade, you inquire as to "who would forget Jimi, and that beautiful classic song" - well you for one mate and to vent your spleen, what instrument did you use - the crappy internet.
Its not a disappointment for Jimi fans, because they probably have the track at least a dozen times over what with all the greatest hits and re-releases etc.
The owners of recording rights etc, whilst quite happy to have their music in films, do not allow the tracks to be used on the released soundtrack - this is mainly because of the way in which royalties are paid and the company/person feels that there is more to gain by not allowing the release of their work.
If someone really wants to find the music, they will.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Hooray for Hollywood.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party at work. It was the perfect accompaniment and mood setter.
It was February and a group of us decorated the lounge with black, gold, and silver tableclothes and balloon bouquets, and scattered around clap boards and faux film strip on the tables, along with movie trivia cards and black and gold wrapped mints. I made a walk-of-fame star for every employee and taped them on the walls around the room. We also laid down a red carpet from the entrance of the room to about the center with the decorated tables flanking both sides. We sat up the snack table with a sign that said, "Studio Commissary" and went with theme snacks like "James Bonbons with Halle Berry sauce," and "The Queen's scones." Each week we took a quarter of the walk-of-fame stars and posted them on the bulletin board for the staff to write peer compliments under. At the end of the week these stars were taken down and the next set of stars was posted.
This CD really set the mood for employees as they entered the lounge for the first time on that first day after it was decorated, and during the party at the end of the month. The month ended with an Academy Award party with an Oscar going to each employee for outstanding effort in whatever category (best dressed, best supporting staff member, most animated story teller, most pleasant entercom voice, most punctual, best sense of humor, most artistic, etc.), and they were given their stars with the peer compliments attached to the back. Everyone commented on how special they felt and how neat the theme was. Good morale booster.
This CD would also be perfect for the ambiance at your own Academy Awards party at home. Print out those ballots, cast your votes, pop some popcorn and pass around the Juji fruits, and let's watch the Oscars!
Kunzel does it yet again!.......2004-11-23
Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops do a great job everytime, and this is no exception. I'm telling you, if you ever thought that purely intrumental/orchestral was unattractive, this will change your mind. Never a disappointment!
Movie Music.......2002-12-12
If you love that music from all those movies you've seen, then this is the CD you want! It is fantastic!! I want more!! I hope Erich Kunzel will come out with some music from older movies and maybe some TV programs. Listening to his music is better than watching the movie.
More than Beautiful!!.......2002-12-11
This is the absolute best CD they ever put together! And that is saying a lot as we are very picky about what music we like. This is the kind of music that makes you 'feel' deeply. It encourages you to dream big and love living! Forget the grooves, drums and bangs and listen to something incredibly beatiful! You won't be sorry for the money invested in this one bit of sanity in such a hectic world.
This is the one you should own.......2002-10-27
If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

A Delight.......2003-01-22
Sit back with a glass or tea, wine or something equally relaxing to enjoy this wonderful CD. The movie themes are some that you will remember and perhaps some new, but all of them are done with style and beauty. A lovely CD which will bring back memories of movies we've all known and enjoyed. The piano style is easy listening and it is one of the most relaxing CDs I have ever owned.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2002-11-22
"Through the Years" is a very enjoyable collection of movie themes played on piano by Tim and Ryan O'Neill with and without accompaniment on a variety of acoustic instruments and electric guitars (no synth). One of the things that makes this collection a little different is that the songs are put in chronological order, starting with "Over the Rainbow" (1930) up through "The Patriot" (2000). The last two of the fourteen tracks are original pieces. Some of the themes that are included are "As Time Goes By," "Unchained Melody," "Forrest Gump," and "On Golden Pond." Something that surprised me is that for piano duets, the arrangements seem very simple and sound like one pianist - I thought The O'Neill Brothers might be this generation's Ferrante and Teicher, but these arrangements aren't nearly as showy as F&T's. The playing is beautiful, and the arrangements are very interesting to listen to. The liner notes tell a little about each movie, which is kind of fun. The two original songs make me want to hear more of their own compositions. "Every Day" is a light and gentle love song that really sparkles. The title song is an ensemble piece with a somewhat jazzy flavor, and closes the collection with an upbeat spirit. So, if you're in the mood for some familiar movie music played on piano, this would be a very good choice.

A Very Peaceful CD For These Very Troubled Times.......2002-01-03
This CD surprised me when I first listened to it. It is among the most beautiful and peaceful music I have ever listened to. The song, "Dear Father", written by Neil Diamond for the movie, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, is my absolute favorite on the entire CD. All songs on this CD are beautiful and it is a very good value for the money. It's nice to be surprised by a CD now and then. This album is very soothing and is wonderful when you need to unwind and want to relax. Great to listen to before bedtime or as you are dropping off to sleep. I recommend this CD for all considering the fact that we live in very troubled times since the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the USA.
The Nature Of America: A Musical Impression.......2001-01-09
This is a very good sampler of contemporary American composers, weighted more towards those writing for the movie industry. The music is very relaxing, and is quite enjoyable to sit back and listen to. The tracks are generally quite recognizable. We purchased this initially as a gift for some French friends. But we enjoyed it so much, we ended up buying a copy for ourselves.
A Soothing CD.......2000-10-23
I found this cd to be one of my favorites to pull of the shelf when I am doing meditation or just in need of relaxing. Track 8 is my favorite. The strings are just beautiful and the melody heart warming and soothing at the same time. As much as I love the cd, I must give 3 stars because of the lack of nature sounds accompanied by the music. If you want a cd filled with the sounds of nature this may not be the one for you, however, if you simply wish a good cd with relaxing music then I would highly recommend this cd.

5 STAR.......2006-08-16
this is great some unrealesed al songs RELEASED! this is so cool a 5 song single!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the theme from Spy Hard.......2003-11-02
This CD single contains seven tracks, which are:
1. Gump
2. Spy Hard
3. Since You've Been Gone
4. Since You've Been Gone (Karaoke Version)
5. Callin' in Sick (Instrumental)
6. Spy Hard (Instrumental)
7. Spy Hard (Orchestral Mix)
These are all good songs, but the instrumental versions are only moderately interesting. The CD is worth getting, though, for "Spy Hard". This song is unavailable elsewhere, as far as I know.
THE best single I own.......2003-03-27
In a world that normally offers just one or maybe two bonus tracks on the everyday single, it's a great relief to find such a long list of 'hits' on this one. 'Weird Al' Yankovic's infamous "Gump" leads the way as the title track, yet it's the b-sides and bonuses that make this single a certain 5 stars. This single has seven songs (that's right, seven!): [ 1. Gump | 2. Spy Hard | 3. Since You've Been Gone | 4. Since You've Been Gone (karaoke) | 5. Callin' In Sick (instrumental) | 6. Spy Hard (instrumental) | 7. Spy Hard (orchestral) ]. And even though you may think the instrumentals, etc are/would be boring, they actually do entertain.
The real treasure on this CD is "Spy Hard". It was the theme song to the Leslie Nielsen film of the same name. In which Al appeared at the very beginning (singing the song). It's an exalting parody of the Bond-film themes and does a great job capturing the hilariousness the movie was going for (which is identical to the Naked Gun movies). This is your only chance to find the song; so don't miss out. Another featured track is "Since You've Been Gone", which I think is better than "Gump" and many of the songs on Bad Hair Day. It's basically a shorter, latter-day version of "You Don't Love Me Anymore". But the karaoke'd version of it is particularly enjoyable; not only to sing along to, but to hear the background vocals alone. They're almost as entertaining as the original's are. Also, the instrumental versions of both "Callin' In Sick" and "Spy Hard" are similar to a karaoke mix. You can just as easily sing along with them. Finally, the orchestral mix of "Spy Hard" is a perfect epic for a single; as its sound is very virtuoso. The only thing wrong with this CD is the cover that's pictured here on Amazon. I have no idea what that 'Flash Bxstard' thing is about, but it's not what is on my cover. My CD has a picture of Al sitting on a bench with actor Andy Comeau (8 Heads In A Duffel Bag). Andy does a perfect job portraying the character of Forest Gump. And the CD title is typed similar to The Presidents Of The United States Of America's album was; in a continuous nospacesfashion. They should change the picture, so to stop puzzling customers.
Anyways, this is hand's down the best single I own. As it'll not only entice you to buy Al's full-length CD (if you haven't already), but will offer up some incredible b-sides as well. And even if you do own Bad Hair Day, "Spy Hard" and the remixes of these tracks still make it worth your time and money. "Spy Hard" makes this an obvious essential for 'Weird Al' Yankovic addicts. And "Gump", the remixes, and "Since You've Been Gone" all add to its rare, endless greatness. Do buy this, and I guarantee you will enjoy it.
Great Single! by Scott Basler.......2000-07-26
I first listened to "Gump" in summer of '96 when I bought this single. It has "Gump", a really funny track. "Spy Hard", another cool track, also has the original version and two instrumental mixes. Probably the only way to get that track without buying the soundtrack! "Since You've Been Gone" includes karaoke and original versions. I think it's even better than "Gump"! "Callin' In Sick" includes the instrumental version. Great single, Al!
A great bit of weirdness.......2000-04-26
This single is much more than just "Gump". It also has three different versions of the "Spy Hard Theme" from the movie. It was has the regular and karoke versions of "Since you've been gone". Great CD, try to find it on eBay.
