Monster Squad puts on a very intense live show. Their LP captures their on-stage energy well, and is quite good overall. It's fairly fast, quite loud punk rock -- if that's what you're after you'll enjoy this album. I certainly do.

I have seen these guys in Northern California a few times and they put on an excellent show. They are awesome. The cd is fast paced and hard driving.

    Album Description

"David Rovics is the musical version of Democracy Now!" (Amy Goodman, Host, Democracy Now!) "If the great Phil Ochs were to come back from the dead tonight he'd probably be hailed as the new David Rovics." (Andy Kershaw, BBC Radio 3). This is the second release in a series of politically charged folk recordings from Daemon Records and AK Press.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars David Rovics' songs are the modern anthems for our times........2007-01-16

David expresses in song what people like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn express in the written word. I can't imagine why a right wing person would even review this title, they are not who this music is for. They won't like it any more than I would like attending a fundamentalist sermon. This music resonates for me because it talks about the struggles of disenfranchised peoples. If you are conservative either religiously or politically you won't like it. Unless, of course... you are open to a different perspective. If, on the other hand, your are more left of center - have a concern for forgoten people, the enviornment, and political freedom... Then you will absolutely resonate with this music. The Haliburton album is great also.

5 out of 5 stars WHO WOULD JESUS BOMB?.......2006-02-07

Quintessential collection by the leading figure in the current folk revival. Rovics, like Dylan of long ago, has a distinctive delivery, is a provocatively competent and accomplished musician, and speaks about the most important things in a way which everyone must hear. The now justly famous "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" is the most 'to the chase' anthem of the anti-Iraq War movement I've heard to date. DR has a generous web site on which you can hear his current material including the wrenching "New Orleans".

4 out of 5 stars Telling it like it is..........2005-11-24

    >
There are a lot of good singer/songwriters and bands
around today but their lyrics are bland, they don't
get to grips with the modern world and its' issues.
    Here's one singer/songwriter who does.
Having trumpeted the American protest singer David Rovics
more than once, I think I should now give my impressions
of him now that I've finally seen him.

On his recent British tour I caught up with him at the
    North Bridge Inn at Exeter.

The posters outside the pub announcing 'David Rovics'
Seemed to show two big bearded guys singing, but I couldn't
see any big bearded guys in the place - in fact about
20 mins before the show there were only about 8 of us in
    the pub.
The landlord went over to the door to collect the tickets
and the people started coming in - a thin tall
distinguished guy first with a black-African girlfriend
    in national dress.

The armchairs and sofas filled up and there must have
been about 60 people in the place with some playing cards
up the back. The tall distinguished guy (looked like a
teacher about 33 years of age) was talking to someone
and I realised he must have been David Rovics.

David Rovics sung his set just accompanying himself with
urgent guitar. I think he kicked off with 'Shut them
Down' about shutting down the multi-national companies
which are potentially doing so much harm to the environment.
The audience listened appreciatively, laughing at the
satirical jokes in the lyrics, and clapping
enthusiastically. Strong social comment, very anti-war,
as a mate of mine said "Dave is no wishy washy liberal
folk singer!". Another friend told me "He's got a better
    voice than Dylan."

David lounged back on a sofa with his girlfriend at
the interval about to enjoy a magic moment and I stuck my
    head between them:

"David could I ask you a couple of questions?"

    ~ "O.K."

"With America being more conservative than England,
when you perform over there do you get a lot of
people protesting at you from the audience?"

~ "No, generally the audiences are very supportive."

"I thought that you might have got some criticism from
Jewish groups because of the pro-Palestinian stance you
take in some of your songs?"

    ~ "I'm not anti-Semitic - my father is Jewish. A lot
of Jewish people in America are anti - Zionist. We object
to the aggressive/acquisitive actions of Israel towards
    the Palestinians."

"In my magazine I suggest that they solve the problem by
moving Israel to Montana - the least populated state in
    the U.S."

~ "If you're going tongue-in-cheek, Israel should be moved
to Bavaria and all the people from Bavaria moved into
Austria, that would be ironic as Bavaria was
    Hitler's homeland!"
If you want an insight on the Israel/Palestinian's
situation you should read The Absence of Peace by
    Nicholas Guyatt."

"People are saying that you are the new Bob Dylan what
    do you think about that?"

~ "Well I'm very flattered, but Dylan is a far more
    personal songwriter than I am."

    "Thankyou very much".

I had to leave the Inn soon after but I feel David hit
the nail on the head there on why he hasn't been heard
of, or played on the radio stations like Dylan. Two
    reasons:
There are standard folk song tunes and David employs a
lot of these to carry his lyrics, this results in the
lyrics being great but the tunes sounding samey. He
should try writing a few of his own tunes. Dylan's tunes
are always a twist away from what's been written before.
That's if David wants to take his message to a wider
    audience.

Secondly, he's right about Dylan's songs being more
personal. I love David's overt political lyrics, could
listen to him all night long, but to the majority of rock
and folk fans too many protest songs one after the
other becomes like a party political broadcast,
and they switch off. Throw in a couple of love songs,
or a song about sailing or something; or a Dylan/Beatles
type psychological song to break things up. You've got
    the protest singing off pat.

Having said that I bought David's `Behind the Barricades -
the best of David Rovics' CD while in the pub and it
hasn't been off my record player since (except to
play Morrissey, Gillian Welch, Twista, Jackie Leven,
Josh Ritter, Bob Dylan...) - but Dave's been in there with them.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back Woody.......2004-03-30

I thought protest music was dead, until I heard the two CDs from David Rovics and watched him perform at the Crawford, Texas anti-war rally on March 20, 2004. I have ordered copies for every member of my family. Thank you for Jenin, The Death of Rachel Corrie, In One World, Palestine and so many, many others. You give those of us who have been activists for the Palestinians real hope.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing.......2004-01-11

This is truly relevant progressive and anti-war folk music. It is the sound of maintaining your First Amendment Freedom of Speech. Play it loud to many people. Its what Woody Guthrie would be doing if he were here now. Rovic's singing is perhaps reminiscent of Steve Goodman (of "City of New Orleans" fame); his guitar playing is perfect for his messages. Rovics' recordings are not on one of the huge corporate labels, and for good reason: Big corporations don't care if you to hear these words or think independently. Although this is the only Rovics album carried by Amazon so far (thanks for this at least, Amazon) if you like this sampler you can get many other great albums directly from David. Folk music also recommended along these lines: Pat Humphries, Stephan Smith, Seize the Day, Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco. Remember Peace with Justice....

Album Description Laura Doyle's amazing debut, "No Easy Answers" takes on many difficult topics including child abuse, suicide, and love lost and discovered. No matter what the message Laura manages to take the listeners on a journey of discovery, and healing with thoughtful, intelligent lyrics and emotionally charged vocals.

From the first notes of "Awaken" through to the award winning first single,"Let You Go" and the finale of "Radiance" you are somehow, entranced, intoxicated, and enlightened all at the same time.Laura is often compared,to the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Dido, and Sinead O'Connor among others. As lofty as these comparisons are one of Laura's most impactful qualities is her "girl next door" sense of lifes reality. Enjoy!!!

Hi, I'm not normally known for posting, but hey I got this CD with my girlfriend at the time, from Laura herself in Vancouver, how cool is that? and of course her dog helped =). The music is great and Laura seems very cool. I think you should give her a chance. You can't go wrong in buying this CD. Not too many other CDs deserve your cash like this one does.

    5 out of 5 stars Seattle.......2002-07-26

This is a great CD!! Laura has a wonderful voice and the whole album makes you feel. I also met Laura briefly on the streets of Vancouver, BC. She is as real as her music. You need to buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, haunting music.......2002-03-17

For me the stand-out songs are definitely "Your Love" -- which features Doyle's exquisite haunting vocals, "Chasing Bees" -- which has a nice rollicking rhythm and gorgeous lyrics, "View of the Child" -- which is lovely, contemplative and sad, "All The Pretty Horses" -- which is the most aching lullaby-like tune you'll ever hear and "Last Exit to Surrey" -- which appears to be an autobiographical song about being strong in the face of the suicide of the singer's father. All is not doom and gloom on this CD, however. The tone is always surprisingly upbeat even when dealing with painful subject matter. Definitely worth checking out!

Admirers of Dar Williams, Jonatha Brooke, Indigo Girls and intelligently emotional, intricately harmonized folk-pop in general will find much to praise in "Blame Sally", the self-titled, self-released first studio recording by an all-female Bay Area quartet that became a KFOG favorite on the strength of a live album. Blame Sally has four strong singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists in Pam Delgado, Jeri Jones, Renee Harcourt and Monica Pasqual, and while their individual voices are appealing, their harmonies are addictively creamy. Imaginatively arranged, expansive narrative songs such as"Touch", "Shame" and "Planet Ranch" are radio (and coffee shop) ready. —Joe Brown, San Francisco Chronicle Datebook

Longtime NMA cover artist Joolz has created brand new artwork for the album. And world renowned music critic & NMA fan from day one, Jack Rabid, has composed some stellar liner notes.

All of the tracks have been Digitally Remastered, so whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering New Model Army, this is the collection for you.

5 out of 5 stars an army that will never fall.......2005-01-14

New Model Army has often been compared to the likes of WAR-era U2, The Alarm, and countless obscure UK Punk bands who lean towards political and religious subjects, yet they are in a class by themselves by securing the dubious honor of being one of the few Punk bands to actively incorporate the use of a violin or an acoustic guitar into their sound. if there was ever a band who had such a burning desire in their hearts and minds for anything whatsoever, it is New Model Army. and this album certainly lives up to its title. on 1984's 'The Price', Justin Sullivan's introspective and breathy vocals ignite a passionate fire as he channels the vocal stylings of Sting back in the days when he was fighting for New Wave justice with The Police. on 1987's 'White Coats,' Sullivan and Co. question the existence of life, the tragedy of suicide, and what lies ahead of us in the great beyond. the two most recognized tracks on this disc are both from NMA's standout year of 1989: 'Vagabonds' and 'Green And Grey'. 'Vagabonds' is a true battle cry for anyone who has ever felt lost or alienated as Sullivan chants "we are in this together" in the song's chorus, set to a military-style drum beat, a strong guitar, and a piercing violin strain a la 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' 'Green And Grey' is a haunting acoustic lament to a deceased friend. if you have ever lost someone you love, this song will surely make you feel their presence. it has also been said that Justin Sullivan's voice is "too pristine" to be fronting a Punk band. but like the music he sings, he is fighting for a noble cause, which in this case would be the fact that Punk doesn't always have to sound chaotic to be considered aggressive. and Sullivan's stunning rasp certainly proves that point.
although New Model Army never reached the enormous amount of popularity that the aforementioned U2 achieved, they remain one of the most driven bands of the 1980's and beyond. no matter what struggles they face, this is one army that will never fall.

5 out of 5 stars As good as a band can possibly be.......2004-05-18

This career-spanning retrospective of NMA is nothing more than a document of the only rock band that really matters anymore. R.E.M. have wandered off somewhere, U2 has become too inconsistent, and Bob Mould seems to have retired. NMA keeps soldiering on, however, and even with a five-year hiatus in the mid-1990s, they still bring that fire and passion that they always did. Every song is delivered as if it is the most important news you'll ever hear, and NMA continue to buck against all trends. While they may never have a massive commercial success here in the US, one listen should convince anyone that there is no one who deserves it more.

This CD suffers from one flaw: it should have been two. There are a few singles missing ("Queen of My Heart", most obviously, as well as the live version of "Space" from 1991's Raw Melody Men), but it gets five stars anyway because the material on it is so crucial and arresting and flat-out fantastic that it could hardly receive anything less. Of particular note is the US-only remix of 1986's "Poison Street", a must for collectors as its album The Ghost Of Cain is widely regarded as one of their best. Three tracks come from 1988's Thunder And Consolation, although in all honesty any three songs from that masterpiece would fit perfectly here. Understand that this is a band whose 1994 b-side compilation sounds better and more complete than almost any other artist's studio release.

NMA have always been overlooked in the US, although as of this writing they are touring here for the first time in at least 10 years, playing clubs around the nation. Any fan of English punk, post-punk, rock, balladry and lyrics that actually say something should absolutely not miss this. Those of you who do not know NMA could very easily start here and hear what happens when you don't sell out.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-03-04

I'm fortunate enough to work with Cary, the guitarist of The Soupbone Throne. I bought a copy of their CD off of him at work on a lark, and upon getting home and popping it into my CD player, I was awestruck. The instrumentals are wired tight, Coby provides some seriously tortured vocals, and overall this band blows away all the corporate rock bands being promoted by Clear Channel nowadays. There is a depth to the vocals and a clean, unique sound that defies categorization. I'm a metalhead, my mom is into country, and my sister likes pop, but we all agree that The Soupbone Throne has more than enough talent to be a national act. Buy this CD and you won't be disappointed. Better still, if you live in the New England area, check out their website at www.thesoupbonethrone.com for show dates and check them out live. This band is the real deal. Their shows sound every bit as good as their studio release.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Buy this Album!!!.......2005-01-30

Although I consider myself more of a heavy metal person, I really enjoy the Soupbones's music. the grooves and lyrics are so addicting! The rhythm section is so tight and tasteful that I get completely drawn in the mode of each song. To top it all off, the dynamics are awesome! every song seems to carry you along on a journey with a lot of ups and downs. the Soupbone Throne definitely has a unique sound but it grew on me quickly.
Summary: I'm addicted to this album!!! Buy it and you will be too!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Throne Rules.......2005-01-20

I heard this cd at a record store in Maine. The guy working there was playing it in the store, and I immediately fell in love with it. Really cool lyrics and excellent grooves.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great Band.......2005-01-02

A friend of mine at college at UMass played this CD for me, and I was hooked. Then, I happened to catch their performance at The Middle East Nightclub and was awestruck. The singer prowled the stage like a caged panther, the bass player was a mass of energy, bouncing around all over the stage, the guitar player seemed to me the most serious one in the band, added beautiful melody and sang backup vocals, and the drummer, well, he was just perfect for the band. That night, the band played a lot of new material not on this CD, but, as great as this CD is, their next one could be even better, from the songs that I heard. Either way, you need to get this CD. You won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2004-12-31

I had seen this band play in Massachusetts and was blown away by their talent as musicians, the depth of the lyrics, and the bands showmanship on stage. I had actually gone to see a friend of mine's band play, and The Soupbone Throne opened for them. Unfortunately,The Soupbone Throne ruined the rest of my night because none of the following acts even came close to these guys. I immediately purchased their CD and it hasn't left my CD player since. I have also read some of the phenomenal reviews of this album, including one review that called them 'The Next Big Thing'.I couldn't agree more! Buy it, Buy It, Buy it!
