4 out of 5 stars a shift in style, but still doom.......2006-07-11

Like some other reviewers here, I found this album to be a bit disappointing after the classic doom stylings of Pslam 9 and the Skull. This was gloomy, and plenty dark, but it only retained a doom vibe, while toning down (or stripping way) many of the essential features of doom. They pick up the pace here, and actually approaches mid-tempo thrash in places. One wonders if the success of thrash at the time influenced them. They also brought in keyboards, and while they were used in a musically effective way, it seemed to detract from what Trouble is about.

The first song, Misery Shows, Part I (a different song than Misery Shows, Part 2, on the self-titled release), is lyrically either creative or contrived, depending upon your perception--it works the titles of several of its songs from previous records into its lyrics. There is also the first hints of Pink Floy experimentation here, especially on hte title track, and to some extent the album closer. (Which, BTW, reminds me of the Luke's Wall ending of War Pigs, as it become extremely "sped up" at the end, after a slumbering song. The lyrics do come off as religious, but there is no overt mention of God, Christ, etc. (though there is a very Christian sounding chorus in the last song, "In the beginning, all is forgiven, in the beginning, time to start living.")

Overall, this album contains the most of Trouble's forgettable songs. However, it can grow on you. And some of the forgettable songs, whose composition was a bit uneven and attempt at blending styles was a bit "clunky," are missed after they are not heard for awhile. The opening song, and the title song, are the stand-outs on the album--I personally like the closer as well, though the lyrics are overly "rhymey" in places. If you are really into Trouble, you'll still want this, but you will likely appreciate it as though it was a decent album by some other band.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2005-07-12

THIS CD IS AWESOME I FIRST BOUGHT IT IN 1985 AND FORGOT JUST HOW GOOD IT REALLY WAS....THE MISERY SHOWS,,,,RUN TO THE LIGHT...EVERY SONG ON HERE IS A MUST HAVE,,,,TROUBLE KICKED BACK IN 85 AND STILL DOES IS 2005.....

3 out of 5 stars Great band, mediocre CD.......2004-03-20

Trouble may still be my favorite metal band of all time. They have a unique weeping guitar sound and heavy riffs that would make Tony Iommi proud. I always said that this band is what Sabbath should have become.

However, this CD was a huge disappointment to me when it came out. Trouble's first two albums, Psalm 9 and The Skull, were incredible. Two of the best metal albums ever released. So Run To The Light had a lot to live up to. And it just didn't do it. The songs aren't as heavy. The changes aren't as interesting. The songwriting isn't as good. It's not that it's bad. It's just that it's a poor effort by a great band. For anyone who remembers the disappointment when Celtic Frost put out Cold Lake, this is Trouble's Cold Lake.

If you want great Trouble buy Psalm 9, The Skull, and their self-titled 1990 album.

5 out of 5 stars mandatory.......2002-10-29

Trouble is one of the greatest heavy metal/rock/doom bands ever, and also one of the most underrated.

I got hooked on Trouble about 12 years ago, and their music has always found a place in my CD player. "Run to the Light" shows an expansion of their unique metal stylings, drenched in doomy funereal riffs, one-of-a-kind guitar tones by a masterful duo, and some morose, emotional singing by Eric Wagner. Wartell and Franklin create some of the most distinctive dual-edged guitar pieces ever released by a metal band. The Sabbath influence is loud and clear, yet never derivative. Wagner's vocals are moody, emotional, forceful, anguished, and ultimately more masculine than most "clean" singers in this genre.

The lyrics tend to expound upon the trials and tribulations of a misguided, depressed soul, however Trouble has firm beliefs that the sorrowful man can find redemption "in the light". The difference between Trouble and other bands that tend to be "preachy" is that Trouble plumbs the depths of sorrow and feels the pain of the struggling man in a much more truthful and realistic way than most bands with the Christian moniker. In "Run to the Light", the message is clear that salvation lies "in the light", but even this positive message is conveyed from the point of view of a man buried in a pit of despair, and the listener still feels like the man in the song has a very long climb ahead. It is brilliant.

Trouble can be a difficult band to embrace right away. I needed a little time before I really understood what they were trying to do, and in my experience that is a sign of a GREAT band. Give them a try if you crave a different approach, and for those collectors of 80s hard rock / metal, any of the first four Trouble albums are a mandatory purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The best Doom album from the best Doom band.......2000-12-07

Trouble is an extremely heavy doom band, that variates from slow and melancholy to fast and crunchy more often than you'd expect. The band is really amazing, and anyone who likes Doom or HEAVY Metal should check this out.

It is true the band is Christian, but the lyrics reflect their personalities, beliefs, values, ideas, etc., and are not meant to convert anyone. At times the band can be very morbid and depressing, and the easiest way to describe their lyrical philosophy is "hope in a world of despair." It actually makes for some compelling songs.

My top picks would be "Born in a Prison", "The Misery Shows" and "Peace of Mind". Highly recommended!

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

5 out of 5 stars One of The Best I Have Ever Heard.......2003-03-22

            5 out of 5 stars undertaker.......2003-03-14

this is a well done album and I really like all of the songs on it. Please take time to play the whole cd. You can understand all the words and it's a very well displayed cd. I really enjoyed the undertaker song and I would like to see this artist go far with his music.I would pay to see him in concert any time.

5 out of 5 stars Leave The Light On.......2003-03-14

I Love every one of the songs on this album because it is my opinion that they represent what country music is supposed to be. From the heart and true life experiences. Richard Espinoza's song;LEAVE THE LIGHT ON; moved me to tears as I listened to a young man full of love for life and adventure and optomistic hope for the future only to be cut down even before he really got started. The song represents hundreds of like stories around the world and just about everyone who listens to it will be able to relate to its true meaning...I really loved the song: FAMILY CABIN; This is a very timely fun song seing what is going on in the world today regarding our families being torn apart. According to this song family unity IS NOT a thing of the past..
"I NEED YOU NOW" A tribute to all parents that care for the welfare of their children and care enough to guide, nurture and give willingly and liberally of their advise and wisdom and when needed a gental tough love persuasion to keep their offspring headed in the right direction and of the trust and love that the children of these type of parents have for them. An Awsome message!!! I could go on and on about each one of the songs of this album but space does not allow. I love the backup instramentals and guitar picken. Richard has done a great job on this album and I hope to see many more from him.

5 out of 5 stars If the title track doesn't make you cry............2003-02-15

I have heard Richard live as well as on this CD. He is incredible. Whether playing the CD going down the road or listening to him play acoustic around a campfire, he will be a rising star. The title track, Leave The Light On, will make you shed a tear. The song about the undertaker will leave you crying too, just this time from laughter.

                Product Description

let me say that Light The Fuse And Run are 5 fellows from Richmond, Virginia who play the hardcore musics like I haven't heard in awhile. Sort of like the slightly less-developed little brother of Refused amazing genre-smashing The Shape Of Punk To Come, the group shows some smarts by simply not piling on one song after another that sounds exactly the same (a trap that many many groups in the genre have fallen into). While it may frustrate those looking for something that runs straight down the line (with one arm-pumping track after another), it's refreshing to me in that it simply allows some space for breathing between all the pummeling. Opening with a computerized voice reciting the first line of the recording, the group comes on full-bore only seconds later, blasting into "I Think They Try," with an absolutely thick rhythm section and some call and response chorus that alternately fits or doesn't (this particular listen I can identify with the scratchy response yelps). After barreling through "Other Peoples Dishes," the group throws in a nice changeup with "Not About Boys Or Girls." Starting out with sort of a mid-tempo metal feel, the track fits and starts through slower moments before again tearing loose. It's one of the more dynamic tracks on the disc and works pretty nicely. "Crybaby Lane" drops things off to acoustic guitar, some scratchy record sounds and vocals, and while it's a nice breather, it almost feels a bit too soulful, even with the amount of variety on the rest of the release. From there, the group builds things slowly with "Instrumentsone" before launching into what is probably the best track on the disc in "The Yes Men." Hitting with some of the nicest riffs on the disc and building from quiet guitars and filtered vocals to loud releases, it shows another nice set of dynamics for the group and leads perfectly into the radio-static rumble of the downright singalong hardcore of "Six Four Nine Five." Lyrically, the group touches on what you'd
