The joke of Licensed to Ill's cover--that the Beasties could crash their jet into the side of a mountain and keep on tickin'--serves as a good metaphor for a career that even some of their 1986 admirers thought might be over after the one-time-only shock of this full-length debut. That thousands of funk-junkie wannabes have since failed at re-creating its groove, breaking-the-law vibe, and ear-splitting mix of rock and rap is an even better joke. And funniest of all is the record itself, which packs dexterous boasts, aural puns, and lots and lots of yelling into a disc that can still be listened to with as much pleasure as it gave in '86. --Rickey Wright

I finally had to replace my old copy of this. I love it! Beastie Boys' classic album mixes their "new style" lyrics (one-liners as I like to think of them) with all the classic party/dance tracks: No Sleep 'til Brooklyn, Fight for Your Right to Party, and Brass Monkey, not to mention "GIRLS". What fun it is, they obviously had so much fun with this album.

License to Ill--

Formerly a punk-rock outfit called the Young & the Useless, New Yorkers Mike D, MCA and King Ad-Rock hooked up with Def Jam founder Rick Rubin in the mid-1980's to create a hip-hop masterpiece. Released in the fall of 1986, License to Ill took both the hip-hop world and mainstream pop culture by storm. Though this was their debut LP, the three MC's traded verses like veterans. Hip-hop rhythm tracks were combined with guitar licks for one of the first rap/rock fusion efforts, sowing seeds for the sub-genre's late 90's resurgence in the likes of Limp Bizkit and Rage Against the Machine.

Lyrically, the Beasties are basically college-age party animals throughout the album, telling wild stories about getting kicked out of White Castle, get-togethers stocked with Budweiser, and related tales of cheerful, hedonistic mayhem. In interviews, band members admitted to having a Schoolly-D fixation at the time, and so there are also some casual gun references here and there. "Slow and Low" covers an unreleased Run-DMC song, with the unforgettable line "White Castle fries only come in one size.." "Rhymin' & Stealin'" is pre-gangster rap pirate fantasy, where the Boys vow to send sucker MC's "to Davy Jones' locker.." "No Sleep `til Brooklyn" has a great guitar contribution by Slayer's Kerry King, as the Boys vow to keep the party going "eight days a week.."; the now-legendary "Paul Revere" is a cowboy fantasy (co-written with Run DMC) where the Beasties play desperadoes on the frontier, set to a reverse-drum track rhythm: "MCA was with it, and he's my ace, so I grab the piano player and I punched him in the face; piano player's out, the music stopped; his boy had beef, and he got dropped.."

The album's signature song was the top-10 pop smash "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right". The rocker is almost out of place amidst all the straightforward hip-hop, but it's just as well that it was the album's closer. The Beasties expanded the cultural diversity of rap as well as expanding its cultural acceptance worldwide.

As of 2007, the LP's 20th anniversary has already passed; a deluxe re-release is in order; it should include any unreleased songs (such as the early "Rock Hard" EP; also, bootleg releases have included rare songs like "Scenario", "I'm Down" and an alternate take of "Fight for Your Right"), as well as a DVD version of the now-rare VHS home video compilation.

In response to Rickey Wright's editorial review (this guy's an editor and didn't see this?)...

The joke, Mr. Wright, is not them crashing their jet into the side of a mountain and surviving, but rather what the image turns into when you unfold the album cover and hold it length-wise with the tail-end up. It's the image of a 'joint' being mashed out (like a cigarette in an ashtray). So I think the genius behind it works, making the obvious - unobvious.

Also, the call letters on the rear of the plane (3MTA3) actually spell 'EAT ME' when viewed in reverse - which is what is usually done when you're smokin' a fatty and 'Jake' is on ya.

As for the album itself - CLASSIC! True Beastie Boy gold!

Who didn't listen to the Beastie Boys back in the '80's? Their crossover appeal to rap and rock fans made the group one of the biggest hits during that era. The album was indicative of their unique style of rap, along with their penchant for including heavy rock sounds/backgrounds into their music. Although some thought that this album was a bit commercialized, it didn't keep it from becoming one of the most popular releases during that time. "Brass Monkey" is a memorable track that almost every Beastie fan can sing along to, and "Fight For Your Right" almost became an anthem for party-crazed teens in the '80's. "Time To Get Ill" was one of my favorite songs on this album, since it displayed skilled Dj'ing and catchy backdrop beats. Lyrics were also easy to memorize, which always helps when you feel like rappin' along with the track being played in your car. "Hold It Now, Hit It" is still one of the most sampled tracks in today's rap songs, and its catchy beat and rhythm allows for regular play in many listener's stereos. "She's Crafty" and "The New Style" were less-known hits, but still allows for fans to enjoy, as beats and sounds are similar to other hits... but, just different enough to keep the album from being boring. With their unique style and memorable lyrics, who wouldn't want to buy this album for the right price?

Go ahead and call it a comeback. Despite her advancing years and frail health following a 2003 hospitalization, Old School shows that the Queen of Chicago Blues has no intentions of abdicating her throne just yet. Koko Taylor isn't terribly prolific--this is only her third album in 14 years--but she's also never released a lackluster effort, and this is no exception. As the title suggests, you should be prepared for tough, rugged Chicago blues sung by one of the masters of the genre, regardless of gender. Taylor's legendary booming voice does show some wear, but her husky pipes, wang-dang-doodle attitude, and sheer enthusiasm will convince any skeptics that the singer is far from phoning in her performance. The disc is split evenly between originals and covers of Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, and others, all powered by a gritty yet professional no-nonsense band featuring guitarists Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin and Criss Johnson, along with the harmonica great Billy Branch. Musically, there aren't many surprises, but at this stage Taylor isn't pushing boundaries with her meat-and-potatoes diet of grinding shuffles mixed with the occasional slow blues. Knocking off a tune or two from the hour-long program might have made this a more concise, compact statement, however. Yet with songs as frisky as "Bad Rooster"--possibly an answer to the classic "Little Red Rooster"--and a strutting version of Dixon's "Don't Go No Further," there's no doubt that Taylor remains as passionate and intense as when she was first claiming her crown, nearly four decades ago. --Hal Horowitz

With her first album in seven years, the aptly titled Old School, Taylor once again shows the world what she does so well. From foot-stomping barnburners to powerful slow blues, Koko proves in an instant that her blues are joyous and life-affirming, powerful and soul-stirring.

With Old School, Taylor brings it all back home, supported by a band of veteran musicians and young revivalists. Singing like she did for Chess Records early in her career, Taylor belts out a set of material that could easily have topped the blues charts in the 1950s, and will certainly reach the top of the blues world today.

Koko Taylor, guitarist Criss Johnson and Alligator president Bruce Iglauer produced Old School. Recorded in Chicago, the 12 songs (including five new Taylor originals and songs by Willie Dixon, Magic Sam, Lefty Dizz, and E.G. Kight) all hearken back to Taylor's early years in the Windy City. They range from the humorous truth of Piece Of Man to the rocking blues advice of Better Watch Your Step to the tough street scene of Bad Avenue (done in classic Muddy Waters style), to Koko's version of Memphis Minnie's Black Rat, a song she used to sing as a teenager. "I put my heart and soul into everything that I do," says Taylor. "I worked long and hard on Old School, and I want my fans to enjoy it as much as I do."

It's really encouraging to know that Koko Taylor, now almost 72, is still singing the blues. And, amazingly, her gruff voice sounds as good as they ever did...a tad less powerful, perhaps, but all the more expressive and focused.

This must be something like her 17th or 18th regular album, which isn't a lot considering that her recording career began in the early 1960s. And it's been seven years since the excellent "Royal Blue" album, so I guess "Old School" could be viewed as a comeback of sorts. But if so, it is a comeback without any modern hijinks...Koko Taylor still sounds like she did 40 years ago, and so does her music. She is even backed by Muddy Waters' former guitarist, "Steady Rollin'" Bob Margolin, on several songs.

So "Old School" doesn't break any new ground, but then why should it? There aren't excactly too many left of Koko Taylor's calibre, and to still be able to hear her growling the blues is something of a treat in itself. even if this isn't the strongest collection of songs she has even put out.
The band is excellent, or rather the bands, because these 12 songs are recorded with three (somewhat) different bands. Longftime Koko-associate Criss Johnson plays excellent lead guitar on several songs, as does Bob Margolin, and "Brother" John Katke's piano playing is pure R&B-heaven.
A handful of songs feature a tenor saxophone, while the rest of them (with the exception of one song) have Billy Branch blowing the harp.

But, again, the songs are not all as good as the music. There are a few somewhat generic numbers here, like "Bad Avenue", "You Ain't Worth a Good Woman", and the slow and rather forgettable "Money is the Name of the Game". Not bad, you understand, but not really memorable either.
But fortunately there is also some really great, swaggering blues to be found. The opening number, Taylor's own "Piece Of Man", is one of the highlights of the album, a powerful, thumping R&B piledriver. And she does an amazing rendition of the classic "Black Rat", which has never been one of my favorite blues songs, but I was frankly surprised at how good this one sounds.
And there are excellent covers of two somewhat lesser-known Willie Dixon songs, and a relatively slow, soulful "All Your Love"...not the Otis Rush-single but the Magic Sam-number.

All in all, this music wouldn't seem at all out of place next to Taylor's own 60s or 70s recordings, and the producers (which include Taylor herself) deserve a lot of credit for not sanding away the grit, leaving the music raw and ragged like real blues music should be.
3 1/2 stars for this one. Buzzrat and music critic Steve Leggett once wrote that this was a continuance rather than a comeback. I think I prefer to call it that as well.

They don't call her the Queen of the Blues for nothing! This new cd finds Koko singing like she was a young lady again. All blues lovers and Koko fans will find this cd awesome. You would never know Koko had some serious health issues. Keep the blues alive Koko!!

Koko Taylor has weathered lots in her lengthy career, but she shows no signs of aging or rust on "Old School," her latest release.

Her voice still strong, still able to plead, prod, cajole and coerce, Ms. Taylor proves that no one will be pretending to ascend to her Queen of The blues throne anytime soon.

If you've always loved Koko, you'll find that nothing has changed. And that's a good thing.

Koko Taylor was a lately acquired taste as I rambled through the Chicago blues milieu trying to figure out where the blues went after it left the Delta. By that I had became a devotee after Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie and even Victoria Spivey. No question that Koko is now the reigning queen of that genre. Her big, big booming voice and forthright manner of telling her blues stories tells all as she does some remarkable covers of Willie Dixon tunes. And that is appropraite because if I recall Willie helped discover her for the old Chess Record label. But that is neither her nor there. For those who only know Koko from Wang Dang Doodle or Back Streets Crying then you are in for a treat.

It's Capitol puttin' out the s*%t like Endless Summer for the California Kids bustin' their own in the early 60s. Well, This is decent for a Saturday or even Sunday drive. I think anything off of Paul's Boutique on a compilation makes you want to just ditch this shti and listen to that whole album.. but I think I just found out the same siht happens when you listen to like Pet Sounds or Rubber Soul or like you know what I mean .. the Beatsies are mackin'.......

..and what's the point? All of these songs (minus a few) are on the anthology, along with countless others. The Beastie Boys didn't put this out, their record label did. It's just way for corporate to make money. If you consider yourself a real Beastie Boys fan, that is you're interested in all the other music they made that wasn't put on radio, then don't buy this. If you occasionally heard them on the radio and Fight For Your Right is your favorite song, then go ahead. The Beastie Boys are much more than just their greatest hits. To fully appreciate them, you have to listen to an album all the way through.

If you're a Beastie Boys Fanatic, you will love this. It's got the best of the best. Who can't listen to "Hey Ladies" and "Intergalactic" over and over again? A great compilation for a road trip or your next retro party.

if you are new to the beastie boys (like me) this is a great first album to get. it has all their best song and no filler. heres a song by song breakdown.
1. So What'cha Want - 4/5 - Great intro song, but not the best.
2. Brass Monkey - 5/5 - Amazing song, the best song from their debut album.
3. Ch-Check it Out - 5/5 - Best song on the album, although MCA's voice sounds shot compared to some of the earlier songs. Also, I think the Just Blaze Remix is better if you can find that.
4. No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn - 3/5 - not one of my favorites, but its still pretty good.
5. Hey Ladies - 5/5 - Great song, really shows off the genious of Paul's Boutique.
6. Pass The Mic - 3/5 - The worst song on the album, although it's ok.
7. An Open Letter to NYC - 4/5 - Great tribute to NYC, but like with Ch-Check it Out, MCA's voice isn't as good as in the older songs.
8. Root Down - 4/5 - Great song.
9. Shake Your Rump - 4/5 - Another one from Paul's Boutique, although not as good as Hey Ladies.
10. Intergalactic - 5/5 - The first Beastie Boys song I ever heard, back when it came out in 98, great song.
11. Sure Shot - 4/5 - Great song, the only rap song I've ever heard that successfully incorporates a flute.
12. Body Movin' (Fatboy Slim Remix) - 5/5 - Takes the original, which was an ok song, and turns it into something sublime.
13. Triple Trouble - 4/5 - Great song, but it has the same beat as Rapper's Delight by Sugarhill Gang.
14. Sabotage - 4/5 - Great song, more metal than rap.
15. Fight for your Right - 5/5 - How can you not love this song?

I agree with Mr. Pac Dan about some of the songs not being 12 inches, but still is a great buy, especially as a constant enjoyment reminder of the real essence of music and just havin' a phenomenally great/quality time whenever you heard these songs.

It has taken me years to finally find a disk with the "Original" version of "The Show" with Doug E. Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. For those in the know, the part where Slick Rick says "Me-Shell, Ma-Bell...." was strangely edited out in every other version of the song that I've ever come across on Compact Disc. A special "Thank You" to whomever found the "Original" 12-inch version!

The rest of the disk isn't bad, either. But, for me, it's strictly "The Show!" Four stars!!

Then you will enjoy this CD otherwise it's a waste of money, mostly Vinyl records transferred to CD and poorly done at that. You can clearly hear vinyl noise and pops/crackles. There should be a law that CD's transfered from vinyl records should state so on the package. I wasted my money.

This was my first experience with Iced Earth, and I am shocked, shocked that I haven't gotten into them before now. This EP is arguably one of the best things I have heard in a long long time. So as a consequence I have since bought 3 other Iced Earth albums. The musicmanship and production is top notch........I can't wait for the new album.

First off, I've been a fan of this band since I took a chance in the metal-dead environment of the late 90's and bought the wonderful 'Alive in Athens' CD (one of the greatest live albums of all time) in 1999. Like many, I felt very sorry about Matt Barlow leaving some years ago, the disintegration that followed and the multitude ill-turns suffered by leader Jon Schaffer.

So that's why I'm happy as hell for the return of the band and in this metal-happy musical climate of today I wholeheartedly wish Schaffer has finally his revenge and gathers the recognition that always eluded the band through 15 years of hard work and excellent music.

So what we have here is a taster of the forthcoming new album and a reworking of the classic "Something Wicked" trilogy from 1998's 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.

Well, the new song "Ten Thousand Strong" is the first Iced Earth song we've heard written specifically for new singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens (since the 'Glorious Burden' album was written with Barlow in tow and only later was resung by Owens), and it shows; the guy is a monster singer. The song is pretty much 'Glorious Burden' fare, except perhaps a bit better. This is killer, even if simple, stuff.

No doubt the eyeopener here is the remake of the old trilogy, and so Ripper is *again* cast to repeat a Barlow performance, and one much loved by fans no less. And again, he falls short; clearly he is no match for Matt's tone and emotional delivery and comes across a bit forced and shrill sounding. The re-recording itself (I mean the music) is cool, even if I still prefere the original.

One very cool feature of this record is the return of 'Alive in Athens's excellent skinsman Brent Smedley, and if you fear after 8 years out of the band he may have lost his touch, well rest assured it's not the case because he is an absolute monster, even more than on the old days. If someone said it's Richard Christy playing, no one would doubt it, it's that good, stunning machine gun precision all the way. Another thing to mention are new axeman Tim Mills' lead guitar breaks, which are probably the best lead guitar ever featured in the band.

Finally a special mention to the excellent cover art, depicting the return of the Set Abominae character.

So all in all a very nice taster for what I hope is a killer CD to come in September, and one to finally put this great band where it has always deserved: at the top of the metal world :)

Let's just hope Schaffer manages to keep a lineup together long enough to see it happen.

3 out of 5 stars IE Shouldn't Look Back.......2007-07-05

If the new single is an indication of what to expect from the new album, then this will probably be the best since 'Wicked'. The problem with this disk lies in the re-recorded material. When judged on his own merits, Ripper has a great voice, and he shows it off on the first track. However, the 'Something Wicked' trilogy can't be listened to without comparing it directly to Barlow's version, and in this context, the Ripper just can't win. The original was nothing short of amazing, and could hardly be improved upon, Barlow's voice thick and powerful. In comparison, Ripper sounds hollow and weak. It's not a fair comparison to make, because the two singers have completely different styles, but it's a comparison that's impossible not to make when Ripper sings Matt's songs.
If Iced Earth and its fans can manage to look forward to the future instead of looking back at what was, then there is reason to be optimistic. This single will serve as a good primer for the full-length.

I don't hate Tim Owens. I loved "The Glorious Burden", almost as a different Iced Earth than the ones previously. I love Tim Owens' voice for Iced Earth. I loved Matt Barlow's voice for Iced Earth.


This is only four songs on a single, and only one of them is new. The new song "Ten Thousand Strong" is great. It bears traces of old Iced Earth without being the same old crap or repetitive.


Why do I scream "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" for the title then? The other three tracks.

The other three tracks are not re-recordings, but new versions of the "Something Wicked..." trilogy at the end of "Something Wicked This Way Comes", "Prophecy", "Birth of the Wicked", and "The Coming Curse"

I don't mind having Tim Owens sing over songs that were originally done by Matt Barlow. But they completely RE-DID these songs! They sound very little, if anything like the originals. I am sort of a music traditionalist by nature. Cover songs don't appeal to me as much as originals, re-recorded albums are never better than originals unless it's an unchanged remastering.


It's not just the lack of Barlow's deeper, more husky voice in these songs, it's a completely new guitar, bass, and drum lines used. The rhythms are done at different speeds, the moods are changed. Where once "Prophecy" was a darkly moody, brooding song, it's now something resembling generic "demonic" metal.


I look forward to the new Iced Earth album. I love Iced Earth, and if Schaffer continues to get better with age like his previous albums, I will love it. What I do NOT like is the "rewriting of history" so to speak, the re-writing of these three classic songs of the "Wicked" trilogy. Please... if you don't want Barlow's voice on them, just record Owens over the song as it was! Don't totally rewrite the rhthyms, tempos, moods, etc! It ruins it for traditionalists who have stuck with IE through the ages.

I am going to be brief. "Something Wicked" was my first Iced Earth album, and the original trilogy sent chills down my spine when I listened to it. Iced Earth have changed the trilogy.

First off, the trilogy sounds more produced than ever. Some parts sound really cool and dark, but in general the song just sounds more computerized and polished than the original's. One good thing, however, is the ethnic addition. The song sounds very middle eastern now, which it sort of lacked before. Anyway, I'll take the original version any day. But this version is still pretty good. Makes for a good recap before the new album comes out, but like I said it just sounds too computerized and polished. Also, I like Owens, but he can't match this song which was written with Barlow in mind.

"10,000 Strong" is unremarkable. It's just a single, so I can't complain to much, but it doesn't feel as heavy as it should be. I blame this on the mix and the production.

Paid in full is more than a classic. It was a masterpiece that is among the greatest records ever made in rap history. I'd say it was the perfect blend of catchy beats and rhymes that flowed like water. My favorite song of all time is My Melody especially when Rakim dropped "I'll take 7 mc's....." (u know the rest). I Ain't No Joke, Move The Crowd, I Know You Got Soul, and Paid in Full were also hot. This is one you gotta have in the collection cause it was one for the ages.

1987's Paid In Full instantly upon its release set the height of the brass ring that every contender needed to aim for (and usually missed by a yard) in order to make a definitive rap album. By today's standards, the beats may be a little old-school and the master-of-the-microphone lyrics a bit out of date but the musicianship, style, and class are not to be ignored. As I said about Follow The Leader, it's refreshing in this day and age to be able to listen to a phenomenal rap album without hearing about bitches and the like. A landmark in rap and music in general. I own the 2005 reissue which has 3 bonus remixes and stellar sound.

Wow. I love this album. I am filing this one under Quality. This album is raw and experimental. The rhymes on here are ingenious and consistently creative. Paid in Full and I Know You Got Soul have to be two of my favorite songs ever. I don't want to be one of those old school whiners who complains how everything these days is crap and this is when it was done right, but upon listening to this I have to say that, wow, this is how it's done. And let me tell you, "the beat is fresh". Eric B. and Rakim were opening some innovative doors with this one. I have more to say but I got to get back to listening. Peace.

I should't really have much to say about "Paid in Full" that hasn't been said by all the other reviewers. Along with Run-DMC's earliest albums, this is one of the records that would go on to revolutionize hip hop and the music industry at large. This allowed rap music to make the shift from single-driven rap albums to entire LPs, and from looping party music to intelligent, musical, and original products. And even though "Paid in Full" is one of the blueprints of hip hop music and sounds a little dated (this is from 20 years ago, after all!) it's amazing to hear how completely relevant it is. I can't even begin to think of how many times I've heard the bassline from the title track sampled. This is without a doubt the most sampled album in hip hop history, I think I've heard each of the ten tracks sampled at one time or another. But besides its influence, this album is still a joy to listen to. Rakim's monotone flow delivers punchlines up the wazoo and perfected the style of bragadacio rap. This album would earn him the title of one of the greatest rappers of all time, a title that he would hold for the rest of his life. Rakim's lyrics still sound ten times as fresh as 90% of today's rappers, and Eric B's bass and sample heavy grooves are still enough to make my head bob every time. James Brown was a favorite sampling subject, and he also introduced heavy horn instrumentation and vocal samples along with his hard drumbeats in many of the songs. Every song here is a classic and that's more than can be said of almost any other piece of music. "Paid in Full" is one of a select few rap albums that was completely revolutionary and is a must have for any hip hop collection.

The album begins with "I Ain't No Joke," a song where Rakim represents the duo and boasts of their talent as musicians, over a catchy saxophone-laced beat. The entertaining instrumental "Eric B Is on the Cut" follows, preceding the heavy and infamous "My Melody." The thumping drums and bass on this track are excellent, as are Rakim's legendary rap verses. "I Know You Got Soul" is upbeat and lyrically inventive. "Move the Crowd" is a product of excellent sampling of funky horn instrumentation and another great job by Rakim. The previously mentioned title cut is probably the most well-known instrumental on the album, having the phenomenal, oft-used bassline and fun lyrics. "As the Rhyme Goes On" follows, containing so many simple yet classic lines ("I'm the R, the A to the K-I-M / If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?"). "Chinese Arithmetic" is the most musically inventive, using an Asian instrumental along with the hard snare. The phenomenal "Eric B Is President" will forever be considered a masterpiece, and the closing instrumental "Extended Beat" is a nice touch.

"Paid in Full" is every bit the masterpiece that its legend would suggest, both musically and lyrically. It sounds like a cliche, but it is true that if it were not for "Paid in Full," hip hop would not sound quite the way it does today. I highly recommend that any fan of hip hop shell out ten bucks to own one of the most respected pieces of hip hop music ever. This is legendary for a reason, and is plain fun to listen to besides.

"My favourite rappers used to say 'check-check out My Melody'" -50 Cent from The Game's "Hate It Or Love It" (sorry for quoting him on this review).

Hearing rappers between 1993 and today, a lot of them quote Rakim or said that he was their influence. But after watching the "I Ain't No Joke" on BET one day, I immediately went and bought this album. Rakim's rhymes were a good distance ahead of their time. Listening to the long track "My Melody" would perfectly describe how his wordplay was. And what I like about this album is everything is so basic, no gimmics or anything compared to other albums I've heard. Another one of my favorites is the well known "Paid In Full" (I'd be here all day naming the artists that bit this song) as Rakim starts off the song "Thinking of a master plan/it ain't nothing but sweat inside my hand..."(and you know the rest...).

But Rakim isn't the only person who was involved in this classic. DJ Eric B. contibutes just as much as Rakim does. His cuts are outstanding. "Eric B. Is On The Cut" as well as the creative "Chineese Arithmetic" are dope as hell. Production is 80's flavor, so thats good. It might be odd for some people to think 10 tracks makes the album kind of short, but many albums from the 80's were about the same length.

This album is a classic to name. I'm pretty sure people were playing this album like crazy back in the day. Me and this album are roughly the same age, and having discover this here I see where many artists got their style from. If you're a new hip hop head, this is another one of those albums that belongs in your starter kit. Each album that this group made together is dope (I personally like "Follow The Leader" better than this one) and recommend that you check out all of them.

I get so tired of seeing the same songs put on Old school CD's. All they know is Maze "Before I let go" and the Isley Brother's "Between the Sheet", these artist have other hit songs that are worthy of Old School type CD's. If I see "More Bounce to the Ounce" on another CD, I am going to scream.

It's not quite the first rap record, or the best, but Rapper's Delight--15 glorious minutes of the bass line from Chic's "Good Times," with a New Jersey crew spieling goofy routines about Superman and bad food on top--is one king hell of a party-starter. After that, they could have filled the rest of the disc with crowd noise and gotten away with it, but the Sugarhill Gang had a bunch of other party-jam hits, notably the almost-as-indelible "Apache" and "8th Wonder." This is definitely a good CD. It's hits from the Sugarhill Gang, whom many musical historians have designated as the first rappers. Or maybe it's that "Rapper's Delight" has been thought of as the first rap song? Rapper's Delight kicks off this album, and it's very catchy, chock full of creative lyrics [unlike today's swear-filled rap records] that make for a funny song. The full version, which is here, is very long. The rest of the disc shows itself very much a product of the times in which the songs were written, the early 80s. That's fine, but it's just that a number of the raps don't really have the flow I usually associate with rap. So the record ultimately didn't impress me enough for 5 stars. Good stuff tho, definitely worth 4.

The Sugarhill Gang brought Rap to the mainstream and in many ways cut a path for others to follow and build upon. Listening to this album, their nostalgic appeal is obvious. It is upbeat with catchy hooks and fun lyrics. The beat will get your head bopping and toes tapping. This is timeless music about partying, having some good fun from "Back in the Day" where the worst thing you could be is a "Sucka MC."

Recommended songs: "Rapper's Delight," "Apache," "Kickin' It Live From 9 to 5."

What this is not: Do not expect the technical sophistication of today's recording artists with 48 track recording and computer assist. Do not expect to find some social message - the only message here is having fun at the club or party.

Personal Note: The Sugarhill Gang was my first exposure to Rap music more than 20 years ago. It is good to hear rap without someone "Bustin a cap," or demeaning women. As to its staying power, I played this for the college student hire in my office and it was a big hit with her.

I applaud the person who put Super Pimp in his place. For that prick to have the audacity to disrespect them shows great ignorance on his part in the culture of Hip Hop. The Sugarhill Gang, along with the hip hop Holy Trinity (DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa) are the embodiment of Hip Hop.

Admittedly, I'm a fan of "Gangsta" rap as well, but I still respect, appreciate and enjoy the originators of this incredible genre... and if you think NELLY is gangsta there is something seriously wrong with you. I just hope Super Pimp realises that "Gangsta" music originated from "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (featuring Melle Mel).

Aaanywho, "Rapper's Delight" is a timeless classic and "Apache" is the hip hop ANTHEM, containing a lot of elemental old school Hip Hop, helping to unify the Hip Hop sound. This album is a must-have when one wishes to reminisce about the "Good Ol' Days", although be prepared for the depressing realisation that THAT kind of vibe will never be duplicated again.

Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!

If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY

Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.

And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.

Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.

Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.

So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.

Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

The seventh installment of SPG Music's (Canada) "Old School Jams" is one of their better ones. This collection is a mix of funk, electro, disco and r&b.
