Recorded live at the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia, this double CD is one heck of an extensive tribute to Stephen Sondheim. Backed only by Paul Ford on piano, Mandy Patinkin gets through nearly three dozen songs penned by the Broadway master. Some are obvious (excerpts from Sunday in the Park with George, in which the singer created the title role), others less so ("If You Can Find Me I'm Here" from Evening Primrose). Patinkin is often mocked for his shivering falsetto, but here, it's actually when his voice explores a lower register that it falters. What's more interesting is when he tackles songs usually sung by women, such as Follies' "Broadway Baby" and Company's "Another Hundred People" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy"--the latter hammed up so much that you can hear the chewing of the scenery. A distinctively mannered interpreter, Patinkin remains an acquired taste, but fans of his will be in heaven with this set. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Patinkin Live.......2007-07-19
I am a huge Mandy Patinkin fan, and this is, without a doubt, one of the best CDs in my collection. The transitions between songs are excellent and seamless, plus the song selection was top-notch.
Sondheim recital.......2007-01-22
Probably the best way to approach these disks is to treat them like a recital in a concert hall. Rather as you would listen to a Schubert or Schumann song cycle. Taken together this way, we come to hear Sondheim as one of our finest composers, serious, comic, manic, depressive, always dead on target no matter what the subject matter. And Patinkin is perfect for these songs; he understands the meaning and value of every note and every word, just as a fine concert singer would do, and he makes his listeners understand, too. One of the most intriguing concept albums in recent memory, and a joy all the way through. Bob Finley, Palm Springs, CA.
Also a very dissapointed fan.......2003-08-22
I too LOVE Mandy and Stephen Sondheim and own just about everything both has ever made! I also have been to 6 of Mandy's live performances. This was truly a big dissapointment to me. Every concert I have seen Mandy in has been filled with emotion and his personality just grabs hold of you for an evening of wonderful escape-ism. This to me was very un-entertaining and I actually became irritated after awhile of listening to it. It seemed to drone on with out the wonderful feelings and emotions and soaring voice that Mandy typically puts into his music. I gave this as a gift too (since my friend and I had missed Mandy at his Sondheim review in DC last year) and felt badly that I had. There are so many other great recordings of Mandy...Kidults, Saturday in the Park with George, The Secret Garden, Mandy sings Rogers & Hammerstien and Sondheim. This one has just sat on my shelf after I played it through twice hoping to warm up to it...while my other recordings are very worn out with years of playing!
Adequate performance; poor entertainment.......2003-05-04
I received this disc the same day a "Philip Quast Live at the Donmar". The Quast disc has its own flaws (and I dont wish to compare the two performers) but it has been strung together in a more thoughtful manner, with witty imagination and using a more dangerous in the choice of songs, which is really where this disc fails. The songs here are generally enjoyable though rather standard, and the lack of cohesion (running the songs together doesnt count) means I just dip into the discs listening to a few favourites, rather than enjoying the whole show.
a very disappointed fan.......2003-02-05
I have every recording Patinkin appears on, even if he's only on one track; I adore his voice, his flair, his emotion, his ability to deliver a song.
But (much of) this recording is disappointing, mainly because Mr. Patinkin's voice in the lower range sounds muddled and forced, as though he's lost ability to control it (however, the more falsetto sounds are as clear and sharp as ever).
And I don't care for the format of this performance. Live recordings should have live audience reactions: one (often unrelated) song after another without applause had me wondering when--if ever--was the audience was going to be allowed to react.
Also, while I've never had the privilege of attending a Patinkin concert, I imagined that--above all-- he would be passionate. Perhaps he was. But what (mostly) comes across on the CD is a somber--almost technical--performance.
I hope he's healthy, that mixed quality of singing on this recording was just a fluke, and that his next CD will be a Five-star as all his previous ones have been

Not to be missed.......2007-06-24
I never tire of listening to this CD. I saw the show in Atlanta several years ago and then again in Nashville--featuring Mary Murfitt herself--and think it is wonderful. I'm always surprised at how such a hilarious/silly premise can set the stage for a moving exploration of friendship, relationships between parents and children, and the joy that comes in facing and conquering our fears. I remember sitting at the side of the theater in Nashville and watching the audience, which previously had been rolling with laughter, be spellbound when the cast began "Songs My Mama Sang" with that gentle mandolin strumming in the background. It was magic--and this "little" show with great writing and thoughtful performances made it happen. I only wish it were performed more often, but then it takes a really talented cast to make it work. There will always be the CD, though.
Excellent, fun music.......2000-05-03
This is a strong woman's musical with great music that doesn't get tiring to listen to. I'd recommend it for anyone wanting to perform a great musical for theatre.

Pure delight.......2006-02-06
I'm a bit biased...because the performer is my father. However, objectively, this work is one of his best. It includes performances from all over Eastern Europe. His musical genius is evident and his masterful voice leads one to experience the pure artistry and grandeur of the selections. I have been told by some that his voice is healing and puts the listener into an altered state of consciousness, closer to the creator.

Scorpions/Helloween style power metal.......2004-07-15
Considering Axxis is a German metal band with a 1990 debut, you'd expect them to sound like their countrymen the Scorpions or Helloween. The truth is; Axxis sounds like...OK, so they do sound like a cross between those two bands. Maybe that's not such a bad thing. What Kingdom of the Night lacks in originality, it more than makes up for by being an enjoyable listening experience. It is a solid album full of Scorpions-style rockers and ballads, with aspects of Helloween (specifically the melodies and fantasy-themed lyrics) thrown in for good measure. The combination makes for a good, if not quite outstanding, power metal album. Fans of power metal and traditional metal should find Kingdom of the Night to be an enjoyable album, as long as they are not expecting something totally unique.

One Bizarre Recital - or Compilation!.......2006-10-03
The Christine Brewer is one of our more important heroic soprano voices of the time is an understatement. For those fortunate enough to have been in the presence of her performances as Isolde there can be no doubt that this is a voice of huge range, flexibility, intelligence and burnished warmth. She is most assuredly a star on the ascent.
The selection on this strange CD is puzzling: 'Great Operatic Arias' these are not. Though there are some of the big ones included ('Don Giovanni', 'Tannhäuser', 'Alceste', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe'), the program is fleshed out with operettas from Lehar, Kalman, and Rodgers and even some concert arias such as Beethoven's 'Ah, perfido'! Brewer is accompanied by other singers where indicated and by the London Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by David Parry. But oddly enough the works are all sung in English translations - and some of these translations are poor ones at that.
It does seem a waste of time to include 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from 'Carousel', but that particular song allows Brewer to demonstrate amply that the mezzo range is a strong comfort zone for her. Despite the odd choices of works here, what makes the album work is Brewer's extraordinarily beautiful voice. She sails over the orchestra, tossing off difficult passages with utter ease, and always reminding us that her instrument is never less than one of beautiful sound. If you can get past the English versions and the mixed bag of works she has chosen to sing, you are in for an hour of beautiful vocalizing! Just don't let this album be your introduction to this very fine artist. Grady Harp, October 06

Axxis is a band from Germany and even in this part of Europe they are not quite well known. But no matter what this album is great. It is somewhat very catchy right from the start. Even if you get a little bit upset in the begining because of the lead singers high voice you will definately get to love this album. It is hard rock to put it plain and simple. Pure, unchanged by any at this time popular streams. No compromises being made and that is good.

Perfect!!!.......2003-11-12
I love Russian Orthodox music and this is it at its finest. Stephen Layton and the Holst Singers (at Temple Church, London) do an outstanding job on this quality production. The recording comes across chrystal clear. This has become my favorite sacred choral piece. Buy it and support the arts.
Orthodox Liturgical Music at Its Best.......2000-08-18
I am an Orthodox Christian and have sung in my church's choir for over 9 years now. Therefore, when I went away to college, I missed hearing and singing my familiar Russian chants. This CD, although not as true to church music as one can get (for authenticity I recommend the 5-CD boxed set "Russian Choral Music" on the Melodiya label), definitely set an air of peace which reminded me of standing in the choir loft with incense encircling me.
I was extremely pleased when this CD arrived in my mailbox. Whenever I listen to it, I feel as if I am singing and participating (although in absentia) in my church's vesper services. The Holst Singers set a mood of meditation and transport one to a dark cathedral where the only light present is the fingers of sunshine streaming through the stained glass windows.
Extremely powerful.......2000-08-05
Alexander Gretchaninov, like his contemporary Sergei Rachmaninov, wrote some interesting and beautiful choral music in his time, and on this recording, the Holst Singers under Stephen Layton present a survey of that music, including his "All-Night Vigil" setting. The result is a truly breathtaking combination of unbelievably good singing and remarkable music.
According to the notes, the Holst Singers are an amateur choral society, but their performance on this (their second recording for Hyperion) could teach even professional ensembles a thing or two! The balance is superb, the tone is just right for this musical style, and there is a sense of loving attention poured into each and every note. As for the music, it is something of an acquired taste: those familiar with Rachmaninov's choral music will recognise many of the same elements, including overt and 'Romantic-sounding' harmonies and a rich texture created with heavy divisions in all four parts of the choir. Gretchaninov's setting is around twenty minutes shorter than Rachmaninov's (though there's still quite a bit on the disc, especially with the addition of two motets and a responsorial canticle). By far the most striking thing about this music is the writing for the low basses. Rachmaninov called for a handful of low B flats in his "Vigil;" Gretchaninov has low As and even what sounds like a low A flat! in addition to long sections in which the second basses never rise above a low F. For this reason, the Holst Singers are supplemented on this recording by four of Britain's deepest basses (including Jeremy Birchall, whose exceptionally low notes were used to record John Tavener's "Theophany" some years ago). I am astonished that something so guttural can also be so beautiful and moving to hear - if this doesn't haunt you, it is hard to imagine what will...
James Bowman fans may already know that he is a patron of the Holst Singers, hence he has appeared with them in concert and on record. Unfortunately, in the case of this particular record, 'appearance' really is an operative term: he is only on one track and he takes the role of a cantor, thus being limited to about four notes! Even so, it is a welcome sound, and adds even more to what is a deeply musical experience, moving and joyful.
Listeners hungry for more after having heard Rachmaninov's "All-Night Vigil" should purchase this without hesitation.
