This refreshing jewel of 20th-century opera arias allows Upshaw to put her personal stamp on music written for a variety of voice types. While some are more successful than others, they're all performed with intelligence and musciality--an Upshaw trademark. Her consistently even tone along with her commitment to sensitive interpretation and precise diction is impressive. The most beautiful of these arias (Copland's "The World So Wide," Floyd's "Ain't It a Pretty Night") capture the brilliance of American homegrown musical lyricism, as the cornucopia of musical sounds flows like a waterfall from magical orchestral mountains. Upshaw's jubilance inspires joy for the listener as well. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars Another adventurous collection from the wonderful Ms. Upshaw.......2006-08-24

On reflection, it's amazing that Dawn Upshaw has made a major career for herself without recording a note of Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, or Strauss. She's far from being a bread-and-butter soprano, as this marvelous colleciton of mostly obscure arias from mostly obscure American operas displays. The title aria form copland's The Tender Land sets the overall tone of rapt, romatnic charm. Her voice is too light to sing Barber's Celopatra onstage, but it works well in the studio, and the more popsy numbers, such as Delilah's big song from Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, call on Upshaw's excellent crossover skills. Another revelation is how good Joh Adams's Nixon in China music sounds when performed expressively by a major artist.

Renee Fleming released a similar collection on Decca ("I Want Magic"), but the two CDs couldn't be more different. Upshaw is touching, informal, spontaneous, and charming. Fleming tires for the big effects, boosting the music (not too successfully) into the ralms of grand opera.

In all, I'm deeply grateful for every unusual program Upshaw delivers. Now that there are more than a dozen of them, we can see how beautifully she has managed a career devoted to music that few other major stars come close to trying.

4 out of 5 stars World So Wide.......2001-08-26

This is not one of my favorite Dawn Upshaw albums, mainly because of the choice of music. The selections, generally, are quite dark and often lack lyrical continuity, which certainly has nothing to do with Upshaw. However, as a lost art form, they are still quite worth recording, but don't expect an easy-listening experience or to be humming the tunes around the house as is the case with Upshaw's broadway albums. That being said, Upshaw does a fantastic job with this selection of music, though she is a bit bright at times. The album is worth buying simply for the recording of the "Willow Song" from the Ballad of Baby Doe. Upshaw's interpretation is wonderful and the voice is obviously well-suited to the piece. In fact, I'm tempted to prefer her version over Beverly Sills' original. Bernstein's "What a Movie" shows Upshaw at her funniest-a great piece. And, as usual, one is amazed by her fantastic technique, which makes up for the brightness in the voice.

2 out of 5 stars Dawn, why?.......2001-05-12

I used to be a huge Dawn Upshaw fan back when she put out her first few recordings. But, now she is one of my very least favorite singers. Why? The excessive nasality, the ridiculous swooping, and the overdone ...mannerisms. On top of that, she has lost the roundness in her upper register (as evidenced by places in Ain't it a Pretty Night). This music doesn't need someone to treat it like a cabaret showtune to be effective, it just needs to be beautifully sung. Once upon a time, I thought Ms. Upshaw was just the person to do this kind of performance...

I realize that there are diehard Upshaw fans out there that will completely disagree with me. This is just a warning to those that dislike this sort of approach to singing.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Selection of Arias from American Operas.......2001-04-27

The music on this CD is very beautiful and represents a wide variety of American opera. Dawn Upshaw does tend to scoop every now and then, but overall she does a good job. I would recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys opera.

5 out of 5 stars "All velvet and diamonds.".......1999-10-08

"Beautiful" has pretty much gone out of fashion as a much abused and now empty word. And yet, I can't think of a word that would more accurately describe Dawn Upshaw's "The World so Wide." It is just that: sheer beauty. The incredible dynamic range of Upshaw's voice is a perfect match for this thoughtful selection of stylistically very different, and demanding contemporary pieces. Going from ironic, witty grit of Bernstein's "What a movie," to poignant restraint of "Mother's Prayer," and softly romantic exuberance of Moore's "Willow Song," this brilliant this CD doesn't disappoint for even a moment. In its last piece, Floyd's "Ain't it a Pretty Night," where Upshaw sings, literally, to the stars, she seems to effortlessly soar just as high. A great CD, it is indeed "all velvet and diamonds."

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Finally..........2005-04-06

Finally, Mortification has released a good cd. They haven't had a good cd since 1993's Post Momentary Affliction! Brain Cleaner is the cd that should've followed Post Momentary Affliction instead of Blood World. Steve Rowe is growling again, and not the high, wimpy growling that's more like talking. His growling is sometimes low, and other times, the really deep growling as was on Scrolls of the Megilloth, and Post Momentary affliction. Lyrically, this cd is more creative than in recent years, but not quite as creative as Mortification's earlier stuff. Nonetheless, the lyrics are still Satan-hating. This is not a perfect cd, but still a breath of fresh air for fans of early Mortification.

I stumbled onto this band by accident, u know how it's set up here u type in a band takes u to there page then recommends 5 other bands similiar that u might like that's how I stumbled onto this band , and god i wish i stumbled onto them a few years ago, this Cd is a Diamond in the rough of this type or any type of metal, its heavy, it switches from singing or growling, lol whatever u like to call it and go seamlessly into just instramental's at just right parts, i just getting into black metal kinda new to it i think it's the last realm of metal i havn't listened to yet, not cause the genre stinks because i've been listening to the wrong bands, in the last 2 weeks i found these guys and another (Symphonic Black Metal) band called Dark Fortress and both of these bands play amazing music, i've been iffy about delving into the black metal genre but after listening to this cd and some of Dark Fortress's Cd's i hope i didn't set my standard's to high and hopefully it's not all down hill after these 2 bands, but thanx to these to band's, blackmetal might have a life in my cd bookcase yet. that's all just go and get this and u will love every second of it as i have and these other reviewers have.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever - what can beat this?.......2003-11-30

I don't even know where to begin with this album... This is easily another one of those albums that deserves about 6,000 stars out of 5. I enjoy every song just about as much as I enjoy listening to Stratovarius and Nightwish (my 2 favorite bands). The CD starts with an atmospheric intro that is about a minute and a half long, then kicks off into songs mostly over 6 minutes long. At the beginning of the second song, you'll hear keyboards as if it was another intro, then some hardcore growling. One of the most exciting parts about this CD is that there are black metal growls AND death metal grunts! Hearing both makes you think that you are listening to doom metal, like Tristania. Graveworm even uses violins in this album! The 3rd track on the album is one of my favorite black metal songs of all time. I can't help but get into it every time I listen to it. However, I can't say that it is the sole reason I listen to the album. I look forward to every song one at a time. The 4th song (5th track) is instrumental and is some sort of dedication. The first 3 or so minutes of it are all acoustic guitars. Track 7 is the longest song on the album. Actually, it is a cover of the Iron Maiden song - Fear of the Dark. Track 9 is another little instrumental thing that leads wonderfully into the closing track. The beginning to the last song is extremely brutal, but yet still beautiful.

I don't know how Graveworm does it. This album, to me, ranks up there with Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Emperor's material. Every song on Scourge of Malice is so incredibly atmospheric, and you'll love it no matter what mood you're in. I still cannot get over the DOMINATING keyboards that are all over this album. The important thing to remember is that the keys don't hog space. You'll only hear them while the other instruments still stand out. No one sound EVER drowns the other sounds out - even the extreme vocalist. The bass sound in some of the songs almost sounds as if it was of lower quality, but it really isn't. It quite honestly fits in better than a normal bass sound would. Earlier I mentioned violins... they fill the last minute and a half or so of the opening song, kind of like the way The Sins of thy Beloved uses violins when it's not during a solo. To some degree, the heavier parts of this album remind me of Agathodaimon. I can also tell you that I would recommend Graveworm to someone who likes softer metal. Actually, I would recommend Graveworm to everybody! This is my favorite black metal album (I have about 25) and I just can't help but love it. Again, any fan of beautiful music (or someone looking for all the Iron Maiden covers they can get their hands on) should at least give this album a try. Easily an album that deserves 5 stars. Till next time.

      5 out of 5 stars And..........2003-09-30

...not to forget the cover of Iron Maiden's "Fear of the Dark"!! With a cello!!! And growl!! One of the best covers ever made! Beautiful album.

      5 out of 5 stars good!.......2002-04-07

Xentrix was one of a handful of British thrash bands that existed in the heyday of thrash (late eighties/early nineties), with with a style that fit perfectly alongside the leading Bay Area bands of the time, such as Forbidden and Testament. After four albums, the band broke up for awhile and then reformed in 1996, eventually releasing Scourge before disbanding again.

      4 out of 5 stars A good Pick.......2002-03-07

This underground band has a good and lasting sound that I/m sure with enough exposure will soon be on everyone's to get list.

          Album Description

Down Factor's first full-length release, PURE, an album with pummelling music from the start, beset with fast double-kicks and drop dead changes into hard-groove beats. The album begins with a some-what industrial/tribal-occultish type intro that leads into a slamming, crushing first song, Brother 6. The onset of the song sets the pace for the album and is undeniably metal in every way, shape and form and screams about the doctoring of genetic manipulation. As the album progresses, the mood of the music gets darker and darker from subjects about murder, drug addiction and politics, only to end with a dark and calming instrumental.

Down Factor has basically laid down nine heavier then hell tracks that work at really only two speeds, fast and blinding, only slowing down to present the next lesson in their brutal riff presentation. This disc is highly recommended without question.
