Indie-rock's hardest-working slackers finally release their third album, on which they've made the clear transition from bedroom-pop to stadium-rock without losing everything that makes them great. Those soaring vocals that sound like the unholiest collision of the Cure and Simon and Garfunkel, the nimble pop hooks that are never overused, those lyrics that are as self-deprecating and razor sharp as they are playful--dude, it's all still here. Relax, you can still swoon. Musically, there are some new elements, from the ragged surf-rock that propels "Pam Berry" to the near hip-hop beats of "Sea Legs" and percolating electronica on "Sleeping Lessons" (which two thirds of the way through shows Band of Horses how to write a song). Wincing is neither the clever genre recombinant exercise of their second album nor is it the perfect little self-contained universe of their debut. This is not the Shins' best album; it's their growing pains third record. James Mercer has learned how to shout his words so the folks in the back row can hear; a slightly harder edge and more confidence is on display. But it doesn't gel fully. Mercer remains one of the most talented songwriters working in pop today, and what this album proves is that the group deserves to move beyond the little Zach-Braff-movie-watching, This-American-Life-listening, Frappuccino-sipping demo-ghetto they've found themselves in. Wincing confidently bristles with stupendous and smart rock music that deserves to be enjoyed by your kid brother and your folks as much as your dorm-mates. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description
It could be said that the Shins third album, Wincing the Night Away is the most heavily anticipated record of 2007. Post Garden State notoriety, the band has reached beyond their indie-darling status to something approaching mainstream recognition. Recorded over time in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek's Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran engineer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) - Wincing the Night Away is a whole new animal. It is the sound of a band growing up and out. Mercer's infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, and unfaltering. But anything can happen around it - and in this case, it does. Channeling a Morrissey vibe, "Sea Legs" pairs a hip-hop (yes, hip-hop) beat with lush melodic lines and searing guitars. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out piano steeped in psychedelic strings ("Red Rabbit"); fractured synth samples ("Spilt Needles"); gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards cloaking thunderous anthems ("Sleeping Lessons"); and, taking cues from early Jesus and Mary Chain albums - sweeping, fuzztoned epics ("Phantom Limb"). Finally, "Turn on Me," "Girl Sailor" and "Australia" are the lilting, exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we've all come to covet from The Shins.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't come close to previous two records.......2007-07-29
and other than a couple of songs ("comet..." and "Phantom", I'm not inclined to listen to it anymore.
Subtly Overwhelming Us All.......2007-07-27
So slight as to be difficult to detect or describe; elusive: a subtle smile.
Difficult to understand; abstruse: an argument whose subtle point was lost on her opponent.
Able to make fine distinctions: a subtle mind.
Characterized by skill or ingenuity; clever.
Crafty or sly; devious.
Operating in a hidden, usually injurious way; insidious: a subtle poison.
Like a nearly perfect summer's day spent swimming in ocean.......2007-07-23
Being the 145th reviewer here, there is little to add. Without delving too deeply into the music or musicians (I'll leave that for others), I would recommend "Wincing the Night Away" for its creativity and craft.
Listening to the songs is like a nearly perfect summer's day spent swimming in ocean: awash with sounds and enough surprises to keep from being lulled to sleep. I consider this recording to be one of those guilty pleasures--something I never thought I would like to this degree.
No wincing to be done HERE!.......2007-07-16
I never got a chance to listen to the Shins' first album Oh, Inverted World, but I picked up Chutes Too Narrow and enjoyed it; the only real problem there was that a lot of the songs were too short in that the band was building up to something but then decided to just end the songs. Well, I have absolutely no complaints about their latest album, Wincing the Night Away.
This was another one of those cases where the announced Saturday Night Live musical guest was an artist that I didn't know had any recent material out (and speaking of SNL, FYI: the woman singing with the band was Viva Voce vocalist Anita Robinson). But I was pleased because that's when I was first introduced to the single "Phantom Limb", which might be the best song on the album; but the funky "Sea Legs" runs a close second. And "Red Rabbits" and "Sleeping Lessons" are haunting yet enjoyable.
Other notables include "Australia", "A Comet Appears", "Turn On Me", and, well, everything else. While it's true that "wincing" usually denotes what one would do if something was bad, this album definitely won't have you doing that, so pick it up.

Absolutely Fantastic!.......2007-06-25
Very, very rarely do I think an album is a masterpiece. This one is. The only other album that I like from beginning to end like I like this one is Sgt Peppers by The Beatles.
Some of the songs on this album are so good, that it's truly amazing these guys seem to be sort of slipping under the radar. You never hear about them! But don't let that sway your decision. I'm a music connoisseur and I really just can't relay in words how impressed I am with these guys. Very well done!
You will not be disappointed if you purchase this album. I'm so glad I bought it!

Customer Reviews:
Pure beauty.......2005-09-06
Ever since Charlotte Church turned into a tabloids' darling and a wannabe pop star, there's been a gap opened for a young, sweet-faced soprano. The best bet on filling it seems to be Hayley Westenra, a young singer/dancer from New Zealand.
The result: "Pure," an album that is reminiscent of early Sarah Brightman, back when she did folk songs and showtunes. Westenra sticks close to her classical sound with songs like the delicate "In Trutina" and the traditional New Zealand song "Pokarekare Ana," which is rendered with the backing of a a rather muddled male chorus and some swelling strings.
However, Westenra doesn't neglect more modern songs, and she does well in classical pop as well as straightforward classical. The big difference seems to be a bit of synth and a delicate guitar melody, in songs like the charming "Beat of Your Heart" and dreamy "Why Painted the Moon Black?" It's a smooth, thoroughly sweet crossover effect.
Westenra also eschews the usual round of classical-pop songs, like "Nella Fantasia." I love that song, but it's been done so many times. Instead, she opts for Maori lullabies, Vivaldi ballads, the neglected "Mummer's Dance" and the orchestral cathedral grandeur of "Benedictus." She even covers Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," adding a modern feel to the finale.
That is not to say that every choice is an excellent one. "Wuthering Heights" has Westenra trying to sound more Bush-ian, while "Amazing Grace" is too simple vocally. Aside from those, her choices of song are excellent -- rich, uplifting and beautiful, and backed by a wide range of orchestral musicians, especially the strings.
There is also an accompanying EP, in which Westenra covers four Christmas ballads, and does them all justice. Her vocals are well suited to the dignified lyrics of songs like "The Mummer's Dance" and "Silent Night," although a bit less for the still-lovely "Mary Did You Know" and "Away in a Manger."
Her vocals themselves are not operatic, but they are strong, clear and sweet, without pretensions or dramatic flourishes. The effect is stunning, more given to magic and sweetness than to keeping to classical standards. Since this was recorded when Westenra was only sixteen, one wonders how good she'll be in ten years.
Despite comparisons to Charlotte Church, Hayley Westenra is more like Sarah Brightman -- a sweet-voiced singer, straddling the fence between classical and pop. An enchanting experience.
WHAT A GIFT!.......2004-12-20
I RECEIVED THESE 2 CDS AS A GIFT AND I LISTEN TO THEM FREQUENTLY. HER PERFORMANCE WITH RUSSELL WATSON (ON DVD)ON HIS TOUR IS WONDERFUL. I CAN'T WAIT FOR A NEW ALBUM. WOULD LIKE TO GET HER NEW SONG, BRIDAL BALLAD, FROM THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Incredible voice - Incredible CD.......2004-04-29
I recently saw Hayley on TV and had to immediately buy this CD. Her voice is so clear and pure, and her songs are filled with lyrical emotion.
It is an absolutely incredible CD that any music lover should have in their collection. My favorite song is Wuthering Heights.
The Best.......2004-04-27
Her album is the best, voice of an angel.......you can totally relakes to her music.
Charlotte is NO match..........2003-12-15
Hayley is just phenomenal. There is no doubt that she surpasses every other female artist in her genre. This CD is astonishing. My two favorite songs are "Heaven" and "Wuthering Heights". The first Hayley Westenra song I ever heard was "Heaven". It would not be the last. Her voice is like that of an angel. She has a smooth, serene sound, and she has an incredible range. If you want a more classical sound, you want her. It's not that gaudy stuff that people generally think of. This stuff has a beat... and it's not pumping with bass. If you're a fan of Sarah Brightman, Josh Groban, Charlotte Church, or Mario Frangoulis... try Hayley Westenra, you won't regret it. I just can't wait 'til she comes to the states... that'll be a good day. She has a few Italian songs, but she's not heavy on the foreign stuff like some of the other artists of Opera / Classical. She's got a wonderful voice for a little girl... I'm a huge fan, Hayley! You roped me in, in about 2 minutes time!

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.
hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16
i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Customer Reviews:
An old Magic Attic DJ with his 2 cents worth.......2006-04-17
I spent 90 nights straight working as the DJ at the Magic Attic in the summer of 85 and 86 (DJ name Chase). It was a pure pleasure working with these guys and seeing the magic they made on stage. I fondly remember the lines of people stretching a few blocks and lining up two hours early to get into the club. THAT is the power this band had on its fans.
I would play my music set from 7-830, then kill the lights, hit the fog machine and turn off the tarantula light before the guys hit the stage. They would play the first set to screaming fans and then I would come on with a 30 minute set at 10, then they brought down the house up until about midnight.
I went on to work in radio in Myrtle Beach and Nashville but seldom encountered a band with so much talent. Backstage we had a riot playing practical jokes on each other. Was that Brut after shave in the fog machine? Poor Tim hated that.
And of course, the highlight of my life was dressing up like an idiot while Tim belted out the lyrics to "Arthur Whiteside". I miss these guys and the fun we had. They provided the soundtrack for so many young people in the 80's and as we are now older, we can understand their value even more.
Tim, Rick and the rest of the guys, we miss you and are excited to be able to purchase this music and bring back the magic.
Superb band.......2006-03-21
I am from NC and saw Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic many times. I have all their LP's and this CD is great. I got to meet the guys once when they played at our local skating rink where I worked as a DJ. If you have never heard of Sugarcreek dont hesitate to buy this CD. You will not be disappointed!!
Been waiting for years!!!.......2005-06-13
I grew up in Myrtle Beach and Sugarcreek at the Magic Attic was the greatest!! We moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in '84 and my Sugarcreek vinyl went with me. I introduced Sugarcreek to anyone who would listen and it instantly became the music of choice whenever my friends and I would hang out at the beach on a Saturday night. I still have my vinyl, but I have been waiting for the CD forever. I can't wait to get this one!!!!
I knew the band.......2005-04-22
I was a big fan right from their beginning. I was lucky enough to know the original guys personally and even got in free and got to go backstage. I did a lot of photography of the band in Clemson, SC. In fact, I'd love to hear from Rick Lee if he reads this. I'm sure he remembers me. As for their music, they could imitate any of the top bands of the early 80's. They were amazing and their music would echo in your head for hours after a concert. I believe they didn't make it because they tried to improve on a perfect sound. They could have been another Journey, 38-Special if they'd kept to the theme of Live at the Roxy.
You Can Have Jimmy Buffett....Sugarcreek IS Beach Music!!.......2004-04-07
Some of my best teen memories come from seeing Sugarcreek play live at the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach! Fortune alone is worth the price of this 3 disk set. Soothsayer will stick in your brain and have you tapping your foot all day, and American Girls is one of the best Rock Anthems ever. But the real find of this CD collection is "Conquest for the Commoner", this is just an amazing tune and unlike anything else on the disk. A fantasy themed tune that is immediately infectious, and impossible not to crank up. The guitar work, the unforgettable chorus, the drum work...you just won't believe this was an indy production. I wore out my cassette of Fortune and have been looking for years for a CD. "Rock the Night Away", the second cd in the collection is good too, it just doesn't have the same sound as "Fortune". "Rock the Night" leans more toward a "pop" sound, at times similar to J. Geils or Night Ranger, but still very enjoyable. The third disk "Live at the Roxy" is good as far as live albums go, the production is better than you would expect from an indy release. And the real treasure is the studio track "Lovely Little Lady" which is a really fun tune that is similar to the music found on "Fortune". I know Sugarcreek appeared on Star Search but I still can't understand how these guys never got national attention? If you are a fan of 80's metal & pop you HAVE to get this disc set! Lots of fun poppy guitar driven rock that is perfect for a summer night, at the beach or other wise.

Over the Hills and Far Away.......2002-04-03
The beauty of Carol Thompson's music is dizzying. There is nothing I can think of that fills up a candlelit room more nobly than the sound of her harp. Where does Dorian find these consistently great musicians? They must be growing them on some hidden magic tree somewhere. Either way, I am glad for the music they put out. This disc by Carol Thompson is among the best Dorian has to offer.
Lush and lovely music from the past.......2000-01-20
Perhaps some day Dorian Recordings will turn out a poor CD, but among their more recent releases are four sets that feature harpist Carol Thompson. The artist was born in this country of Anglo-Welsh-Irish background (as the copywriter tells us). Part of her technique is to let her ornamentation come out of the melody rather than merely appending it, and to execute her chords with a "downward roll" rather than an upward as in classical harp playing.
So with Amazon.com's permission, I will submit this same write up to each of the four webpages that deal with these albums.
(DOR-90013) has Ms. Thompson accompanied by another harpist and a wooden flute; and the extra coloration is welcome. Here we have 18 cuts (64 minutes) of Celtic harp music, the more familiar of which are "Brian Boru's March" and "Gentle Annie." The notes are of a general nature.
The subtitle of
(DOR-90120) shows the program (53 minutes) to be much like the other sets, including the familiar "All Through the Night" and "The Ash Grove." I spot even one or two selections among the 19 here that appeared on earlier recordings. But it is all so winningly played that one must not carp. The notes are in several languages and a bit shorter than usual to keep the booklet from being too thick.
(DOR-90176) has 71 minutes consisting of 21 cuts such as "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Snow on the Hills." This set tends to be more satisfactory than the last one because of the presence of accordion, concertina, wooden flute and second harp; although by now one tune is starting to blur into the other.
The fourth Dorian set in order of recording is
(DOR-90240) in which our harpist goes it alone with a short program (51 minutes) of 12 cuts, half of which are medleys. Included are "Twisting of the Rope," "Blind Mary" and the title song. This time the notes give information about each song.
Again I must emphasize the excellence of the playing and how beautiful each CD is by itself. But as with so many artists that concentrate on a small part of the music spectrum, each new offering tends to be predictable and one gets a strong feeling of déjà vu. But to be fair, these sets were released with considerable time between them and only people like reviewers now and then get to hear them all at once.
So which to choose? I would go for the two where you get more than the sound of a single harp first. But I really think that enthusiasts of British music will want to have all of these sets sooner or later.
And keep an eye open for the fifth entry in this series:
(DOR-90273) that is not yet available at the time of this writing.
Superlative.......1998-09-25
This is truly beautiful music on harps having more character than the modern concert harp. The melodies are attractive, with good counterpoint figures. Recorded sound is first-rate, without mush or harshness, although low-frequency noises from the recording venue may intrude during quiet passages if your equipment goes low with authority. I have bought several of these CD's - when I play them for friends and family, they ask me for the CD as a gift!

Float Away with the Friday Night Gods should be titled Bait and Switch. Marah's third album challenges fans with such a drastically different sound that it nearly qualifies as audience abuse. While the group previously worked a brand of rock & roll all its own--faintly rootsy, vaguely Springsteen-ish, instantly distinctive--Friday Night Gods finds the band teamed with Oasis producer Owen Morris. The result, unsurprisingly, is a polished, Anglo guitar-pop record that sounds like Oasis--a silly goal that is, nonetheless, achieved to perfection on "Float Away," the string-and-synth first single. What's most frustrating, though, isn't the new sound but the band's abandonment of its own lyrical strengths. Their last album, the indelible Kids in Philly, created a vivid sense of place even as it embraced a universal sense of empathy and community--an approach that, Lord knows, we sure could use now. By contrast, Friday Night Gods favors ultracool and clichéd club-kid poses and derivative soundscapes. Everything here is distracting enough, mind you, but with the notable exception of the earnest, atmospheric ballad "Crying on an Airplane," it all feels like a retreat from significance. --David Cantwell
Album Description
Produced by Owen Morris (Oasis, The Verve), Float Away With The Friday Night Gods was recorded late last year in Wales and features 10 new songs. The first single, "Float Away," features cameo vocals and guitar from Bruce Springsteen.
Customer Reviews:
Not necessarily bad, just not Marah.......2006-01-16
This was the first Marah album I got after listening to some of their songs on myspace. They had the title track on their, which is incredibly good, however after listening to this album and the other albums they have released it just doesn't seem like Marah. Kids In Philly felt like they put themselves into the album, it was close and intimate. This album seems distant, perhaps because of all the synth noise. It would be a great album if it were another band it just seemed too conceptual to be a concept album from Marah.
My introduction to this great band..........2005-03-04
Wow, amazing to see all the crap flying about over this album. A friend bought it for me, probably thinking because I'm a big fan of Americana and roots-rock that I'd like it... and he was right, except that I love intelligent, beautifully-crafted pop music too. The production is excellent - sounds great and with a lot of punch... and now that I'm about ten years older than the median CD-buying age, I couldn't give a rat's ass if anyone thinks it's cool or not.
If anything I would compare this band to a male Aimee Mann. In fact, they'd be a great double-bill.
I'm interested in hearing their other stuff now too. Nice little CD.
Bad - don't buy unless a devoted fan.......2003-10-09
I bought this album after hearing one song off another album - "My Heart Is The Bums On The Street" - which is absolutely brilliant. This album on the other hand - excluding the first song, which is decent - is a blatant attempt at mainstreaming things. Lyrics can be good, but music is basically everything and the kitchen sink thrown in, subtlety be damned. Big chords, lots of distortion, lots of nothing special. Luckily I got it used for $3.99.
Gave it 2 stars because first song is ok.
Not What I Was Expecting.......2003-06-28
I read a good review of this band in Modern Twang (okay, it was written in 1998) and just finished listening to this CD for the first time. After reading the previous reviews I concluded I picked up the wrong Marah CD. Oh well, even though I probably won't keep Float Away, I'll look for Kids In Philly or Let's Cut The Crap.
I dislike this for the same reason I don't like bands such as New Pornographers...too much noise.
A Step Forward.......2003-06-03
This album has been villified by some die-hard fans on the basis that Marah have abandoned their roots-rock and alt-country roots. When viewed rationally, however, Marah have always been a damn fine rock n'roll band and Float Away... is a damn fine rock n'roll record. Marah had always threatened to make that next step. Their live performances have been turbo charged since day one and it was time for the band to take their sound and give it a further shot of adrenaline.
After repeated listenings to Float Away, several things become apparent. One is that this is one hell of a classy record. The sound is smoother, the touches are defter and the new rhythym section grooves like a well oiled machine. Another factor is the more global feel to the lyrics. Whilst Lets Cut The... and Kids In Philly were very much centred around the Bielanko brothers' home town of Philadelphia, Float Away... is the product of the wider world that has been opened up to the band in the wake of the success of their second album. This is illustrated most clearly in Crying On An Airplane, a lush ballad which acts as Serge Bielanko's ode to the pressures and torments of a long distance relationship.
The band themselves have been taken aback by some of the negative comments made about Float Away. According to Dave Bielanko, Marah were never about Banjos and acoustic guitars. They were just there. There is a hint of snobbery and elitism creeping into the alt-country scene and it has no purpose being there. Put aside the prejudices and let the pure energy of Soul, Float Away(the streets are lonely), Shame and People Of The Underground take over your head and put some rock n'roll back in your heart.
