Billy Bragg producer Grant Showbiz bids, on this second Moodswings disc, to become the '90s answer to Mike Batt--the Brit impresario (remember the Wombles?) who produced kitchen-sink instrumental exotica for the lumpen proletariat in the late '70s. That's Tanita Tikaram (we think) in "Together as One (Luminous)," but she brings little to an album that is essentially faux electronica/world beat for boutique browsers. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Never beaten.......2005-04-13

I have listened to this album on average three times a week for the past few years. There's a flow and a rhythm that no words can describe. There are no albums like it - enigma feels too spacy and with no real path. Some Air and Mellow tracks come close to grasping the feeling, but they both lack continuity. This album will never cease to amaze me, nor will you regret buying it. Although, part of me selfishly wants people not to buy it - the album is so intensely personal that I want it to be mine and only mine. But still - buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for ANY Mood!!.......2001-09-19

I became familiar with Moodswings in 1994, with their debut - Moodfood (1992) - unfortunately, just missing the CD Single for Spiritual High.
I thought Moodfood was wonderful - and was blown away when I first heard Psychedelicatessen. I've listened to it at least a hundred times and have never grown bored of it!! It's a beautiful musical journey - from the beat-driven to the ethereal. It's been a soundtrack to a large portion of my life; it fits in about EVERY situation. It's inspired me in my Architecture studio, motivated and relaxed me at home; it's warmed me up to go out on party weekends and brought me back to earth afterwards. I have yet to find anyone who hasn't enjoyed it; friends who know request it often.
Do me a favor - once you've listened to it, write to Arista and ask them to bring Showbiz & Hood back together for another!!

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting swirl of psychedelic pop.......2001-01-05

I don't know anything about the people who produced this music, but I heard it on the radio a couple of years ago and went right out and bought it. That happens very rarely with me! The music on this disc continually unfolds in the most exquisite way as one track blends into the other. The instrumentals are lush and fascinating, and when the vocalists enter, they are unintrusive (if you don't want to listen to words) but also very inspiring if you listen to what they are saying! Even "Destruction & Destroy", despite the harsh sound, has a positive message. This is the kind of music that carries a message of hope for the future without getting maudlin or preachy about it. The snide critic who talks about "faux electronica" is missing the point. This is not meant to be some kind of edgy, post-apocalyptic trip album along the lines of the Orb (who I also enjoy on different occasions), much less anything along hardcore techno lines. This is made to be mainstream, accessible music for the masses, but of a higher quality than the disposable junk produced by the big record companies. Moodswings don't sell millions of albums but the world would be better if more people fed their minds with this kind of music!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE, UTTER, SHEER PERFECTION!.......1999-11-01

The things that amazes me the most is the speed with which these people play their instruments and, still, maintain flawlessness! Moodswings is a mind-boggling group who is truly unique and will maintain that position for a long time! It just doesn't get any better than this bunch! Need to put some oomph into your life? Here it is!

5 out of 5 stars Memorable melodies delivered from steel drums to solo piano.......1999-02-11

Once I heard the debut CD, "MoodFood", I had to get this one and it didn't disappoint. This album is what a 5 star rating should be. Every track delivers.

The music is mainly instrumental ranging from driving rhythms (such as 'Dancing is Important) to ethereal musings (such as 'Together As One'). The opening symphonic overture is still my most favorite music (there is a tempo shift that defies explanation but I can listen to it all day)...

5 out of 5 stars Threshold............the new fathers of prog metal!.......2006-10-29

This album - to me, is one of the best albums of all time. I don't mean to hype up the band just because of my fanaticism, but owned Wounded Land before this, and as good as it was this blows WL out of the water. This album doesn't hold anything back - the driving heavy riffs, the bombastic drumming, the melodic guitar solo's and harmonies are enough to make any fan of heavy music drool. Some people have said that Threshold arn't that heavy. Well my friends, all you have to do is listen to this record, and by the end of it, I can gaurentee you - you'll feel like your face has been blown off! Not only is it heavy, but every song has a different feel, and the lyrics are very thought provoking. Every album that Threshold released after this has been first class - and they have never released a "let Down" record. They are simply one of the best heavy/prog bands of all time. Buy it, and hear it for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars A Big Step Forward.......2006-03-21

Threshold is quietly becoming one of the better progressive metal bands out there. They're not as well known as Dream Theater or Fates Warning (both obvious influences), not as technical as Pain of Salvation or Spiral Architect, and not as heavy as Evergrey or Symphony X. Instead, Threshold occupies a middle ground with a style that is progressive but with an appreciation for melody, and heavy but with an appreciation for more tranquil moments. They continue to refine and improve their sound with every album, and 1994's Psychedelicatessen was the first major step forward.

Psychedelicatessen continues the heavy approach present on the band's debut album Wounded Land, but with much improved songwriting. The songs are as progressive as before, but are more accessible. And as much as I enjoy Damien Wilson's vocals on later Threshold albums, his performance on Wounded Land was sub-par. Temporary replacement singer Glynn Morgan gives a much better performance on Psychedelicatessen. His voice suits the music quite well, and really helps the album maintain a cohesive sound.

The band would continue to improve on later releases, but Psychedelicatessen is the first Threshold album I really enjoyed start to finish.

Note - InsideOut's 2001 Special Edition reissue of Psychedelicatessen contains the out of print live EP Livedelica as a bonus disc, as well as expanded liner notes and a slipcase.

4 out of 5 stars A solid, talented effort.......2004-11-13

These guys are really good!!! I can hear the quality of their musicianship and this disc is very well produced. They have had alot of lineup changes over the years but always put out a great effort. Every disc is a progressive improvement over the last. You should hear their latest Subsurface, it is already a groundbreaking classic prog metal album as is this one!!!

4 out of 5 stars Threshold moves in a heavier direction with this album........2002-06-19

Wounded Land, Threshold's first release, is a fantastic progressive metal album in a vein not unlike that of a heavier Shadow Gallery or a darker Ayreon. Psychedelicatessen is Threshold's second offering and it doesn't quite follow Wounded Land's progressive blueprint but, instead, goes off into a more power metal direction. For whatever reasons, Psychedelicatessen is a heavier, more powerful version of Threshold. But is it a better Threshold?

1. "Sunseeker" - The intro to this song opens this album much like the intro to Threshold's debut release, Wounded Land, did: It's ominous and dark, a foreshadowing of things to come. Soon heavy, crunchy guitars explode in sonic fury. The thing that stands out right off is that this song is pretty much straight metal. Sure, the keyboard is present but it is more subdued when compared to Wounded Land. Glynn Morgan, an excellent vocalist, has an edge to his voice that his predecessor Damian Wilson never had (even though I prefer Wilson). We are off to a good start.
2. "A Tension of Souls" - A more progressive outing this time but the emphasis is on the "metal" part and it's metal packed with thunder and plenty of bite. Keyboards are present but, again, they are subdued. "A Tension of Souls" is unusually structured, so it's difficult to predict where this song will take you the first time you here it. Good song.
3. "Into the Light" - This is a much softer song than the previous two. Morgan shows his ability to fit the music just right with his vocals and does so effectively. Sure, this slower and more relaxed track is, overall, much lighter than what we've heard so far but it still has it's heavy moments. It's an interesting contrast. Unfortunately, this long song starts to lose it's cohesion toward the end and seemingly dwindles, stumbles and finally finishes on a weak note making this an average song.
4. "Will to Give" - Nice! We are introduced to this song with a "bouncy" bass solo which is soon joined by crunchy guitar work. I really like the music here but the vocal melodies lose me quickly. Too bad, really, this song could've been great.
5. "Under the Sun" - A soft piano starts this song off and Morgan's vocals are very beautiful and soft and the music is very symphonic at times. Acoustic guitar joins in later and even an organ as the song finishes. Nice song.
6. "Babylon Rising" - A cool Savatage-like guitar riff opens this tune and the guitar work maintains this quality throughout. This is a nice heavy track, but I tire quickly of Threshold's politically correct, anti-mankind, anti-capitalist lyrics that they are so fond of. But I'll live.
7. "He Is I Am" - Good, heavy song but the vocal melodies are a bit rigid and I'm feeling as though I'm being hypnotized. The guitar work is as heavy throughout and this is nice. The keys are present but subtle. I do like this development at this point of Threshold's career. Too many bands push the keyboards too far to the front (Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory is a good example of keys that are way too prominent and what I don't like to hear from keyboard players). Though it has many strong points, this song loses it's way toward the end.
8. "Innocent" - Dark and powerful, that is what this song is in essence and though it is slow at first, it builds as it goes. Good track.
9. "Devoted" - This is a song that alternates between heavier and less-heavier parts. The opening blasts you with blistering guitar crunch, the middle section is symphonic and very soft and the ending kicks up the power again. This song actually is similar to some of Queensryche's heavier stuff in spots (think "I Am I" from Promised Land). "Devoted" is a solid song overall.
10. "Lost" - Remember "Keep It With Mine" from Wounded Land? This song is it's cousin: Soft, beautiful, short and symphonic.
11. "Intervention" - I love songs that have ominous openings and then explode into heavy metal thunder. "Intervention" isn't always heavy, though, and alternates from heavy to soft throughout. Solid song (though perhaps a bit too long) and more than any other tune on this album, it reminds me of Threshold's overall approach on Wounded Land.

Similar bands to Threshold as heard on Psychedelicatessen? I don't know, maybe a heavier, less progressive Dream Theater or a heavier, less progressive Shadow Gallery; this is a hard album to make comparisons to. I'll admit it, I was disappointed with this release. I wanted something a bit more like Wounded Land. Similar to the debut or not, I think Psychedelicatessen just isn't as strong overall. It's good but not great. I know Threshold fans are divided on Psychedelicatessen; either it's considered Threshold's best studio release (they have five studio albumsas of this writing) or it's considered their weakest (but still good). Make of that what you will. Those who prefer power over progressive will probably like this one more than Wounded Land.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sophomore release from Threshold.......2003-09-27

Psychedelicatessen is British prog metal band Threshold's second album after their wonderful debut Wounded Land. Originally released in 1994, this copy came out on their new label InsideOut Music in 2001 containing a bonus CD with live versions of "A Tension of Souls", "Innocent", "Sanity's End" and several others. There's also an enchanced element featuring notes, videos, photos and a screensaver.

So what's different on Psychedelicatessen compared to its predecessor and its follow-ups? Well this has a different singer to begin with: Glynn Morgan. Also former drummer Tony Grinham has been replaced with Nick Harradence (Shadowland). It's hard to say Threshold is a consistent band as far as their drummers are concerned since they replaced Harradence with Mark Heaney on Clone and Heaney with current drummer Johanne James on their later releases. Other than that guitarists Karl Groom and Nick Midson are doing an amazing job in the rhythm section with bassist Jon Jeary. Richard West, as always, is one of the core parts of the bands. The drumming isn't bad, but I certainly think the drummer on Wounded Land and their current one James add a lot more to the feel of the music. They're more prominent and subtle. They make themselves heard if you know what I mean. Still, Psychedelicatessen is an excellent release! Vocalist Glynn Morgan detered me from picking this CD up, because I love Threshold with both original singer Wilson and current singer Mac. Since Morgan only appeared on Threshold's Psychedelicatessen album (plus a live disc) only to be replaced by Wilson again on Extinct Instinct, I had the misconception that he wasn't the right guy for the band. Man was I wrong! Threshold has got to be one of the few bands out there lucky enough to have three amazing vocalists through out their career. While I'm a big fan of Damian Wilson (Ayreon, Star One, Landmarq) and aware that Mac is even better than Wilson, I must admit that Glynn Morgan's vocal performance is absolutely stunning here! I am curious why he left the band. His vocals fit Threshold's style perfectly and he has everything a prog vocalist should possess: rawness, energy, deep and angry delivery shifting to very calm and solemn vocal melodies. It will be interesting to check out this guy's other band Mindfeed.

One thing that gives Threshold their originality has got to be their dual guitars complemented with crunchy bass riffs and masterfully crafted keyboards. The rhythms are widely prevalant. Also, I could be wrong but I think guitarist/songwriter Karl Groom might have been influenced by the legendary Richie Blackmore in the way that his solos showcase some nice Middle Eastern melodies. This is also available on their debut Wounded Land. The influence however doesn't come from Blackmore's technique, but the content of his solos.

The fourth track "Will to Give" immediately caught my attention with its heavy riffs and beautiful vocal melodies. Richard West's beautiful keyboard passages really show in this song, though they serve to complement the songs rather than out shredding the rest of the band members. That is another thing I like about Threshold. The keys play a great role in their music, but they never dominate the other instruments.

Psychedelicatessen was the last Threshold album I picked up, because I was a little weary about it. I was wrong. It's beautiful. This one gets lots of mixed reviews; some fans love it while to some it doesn't appeal much. Well pick it up and decide for yourself. I personally really like it and this could well become my favourite Threshold if it continues to get so many replays from me. I've had it in my discman all week. Time will tell I guess.
