Customer Reviews:
A HEAVY, DISTORTED, EVIL-SOUNDING THRASH ALBUM!.......2007-06-30
A few moments after putting this one in my Hi-Fi CD player I was afraid I would destroy my system, even at moderate volume. This album is unbelievable. If you like loud, extremely fast, distorted HEAVY chainsaw guitars, this is the album for you. The ultimate extreme thrash band based on this recording alone. It reminds me somewhat of Venom's first album 'Welcome to Hell', which blew me away the first time I heard it back in the day. The rough recording quality, sheer heaviness and pure distortion noticeably overshadows the melody to be sure. But this is an over all very cathartic album. Of course I would say that 'Leave Scars' along with 'Darkness Descends' and 'Time Does Not Heal' (a much more clear and melodic album, although no less heavy) are the ones to get for anybody who needs a fix of pure bone-crushing, bludgeoning, mind-blowing musical assault. Oh did I say that a look at the lyrics reveals the most intelligent, literate and sophistical vocabulary every used in such brutal thrash metal music. From one of greatest extreme metal bands to grace the world of metal, this one's a sure-fire winner!
solid 4.......2007-05-09
I loved Dark angel, and the previous reviewer is indeed correct. 'Time Does Not heal' is much better than this.. I love this cd, but the sound quality isnt up to par with'Heal'.. and some of the songs drag a bit, which wasnt the case with 'Heal'. But its a great piece of work in itself and shows some of the incredible lyrics that reinhart could write. And the 1 minute + cover of 'Immigrant song' is killer.
Essential metal.

ANOTHER GREAT FAST THRASH ALBUM!
A disappointing follow-up to DARKNESS.......2004-10-10
I remember when LEAVE SCARS first came out in early '89 (I'm a thrasher from way back). DARKNESS DESCENDS was my favorite album, but that came out in late '86. I wanted some NEW Dark Angel!!!! I had heard that vocalist Don Doty was out of the band for good. He had been replaced by a guy named Ron Reinhart. Reinhart had a stronger voice than Doty. Drummer Gene Hoglan wrote some amazing lyrics for the album. However, just about everything else about the album is a disappointment.
First, the guitar sound is terrible. They sound like chainsaws, which is not a good thing in Dark Angel's case. Secondly, most of the material had been written when Don Doty was still in the band. On some of the songs Ron Reinhart's vocals don't match up particularly well with the music. His delivery seems off on songs like "No One Answers," "Older Than Time Itself," & "The Promise Of Agony." Also, "Older Than Time Itself" has some ridiculous guitar riffs. My favorite song is "Never To Rise Again", which is very groove-oriented. Any band with a songwriting duo as creative as Hoglan & guitarist Jim Durkin shouldn't have to resort to doing cover tunes. However, they still seemed to feel the need to cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Immigrant Song." It's truly awful. If I were Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, I'd sue DA for ruining the song. There's also a track called "Worms", which is just noise. "No One Answers" has an overly-long & pointless instrumental intro. To make matters worse, the intro section is repeated about half-way through the song. On top of that, there is a full-length instrumental called "Cauterization." The songs on DARKNESS DESCENDS flowed nicely. Most of the songs on LEAVE SCARS seemed to get bogged down. The album does finish on a high note with the title track, "Leave Scars." The guitar riffs are amazing & Hoglan's lyrics are brilliant. Why Slayer didn't try to tap him when they were having problems with Dave Lombardo is beyond me.
Bottom line: If you're gonna get a Dark Angel album, get DARKNESS DESCENDS. It's still the best thrash metal album ever made.
