4 out of 5 stars More soul, less hesitance than in later recordings.......2007-05-02

I was really pleased when I read on the packaging that this was comprised of demo tracks. What a fabulous find for appreciating the origins of recordings for the now established singer songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars Living in a song.......2007-02-13

I love this CD sooo much - Patty's voice is amazing and raw and earthy. Patty sings from the heart. Sweet Loraine is my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Raw and Brilliant.......2007-01-20

If you think the Velvet Underground or MC5 are raw, you ain't heard nothing yet. Patty sings like an exposed raw nerve, when she wails and when her voice is a bare whisper. And unlike some affected Janis Joplin-caterwaul, her voice is a powerful instrument, at once immediate and refined. Let's put it this way: you never heard the beauty in screaming guitar licks before you heard Hendrix, and you have never heard the beauty in pain and pathos until you've heard Griffin. Buy this album and you will be in awe of her testimony. It's just her and her guitar, but the "her" part of the equation more than makes up for any potential augmentation. Just get this record, listen to Patty, and connect with some true humanity.

this is one of the best CDs I have purchased in a long time. Very raw and emotional. A great, great find.

5 out of 5 stars It's even better due to the fact that it has the previously unreleased "Einstein On The Beach!".......2007-05-09

"Einstein On The Beach" is what really made this greatest hits album exceptional. This was always one of my favorite Counting Crows songs, but it never got released on any of their albums, so it wasn't until this greatest hits album got released that I finally was able to own that song after all these years. Even without this song on there, however, this would still be a great collection. After all, IT'S COUNTING CROWS!!

5 out of 5 stars This album is worth the dough!.......2007-03-09

This is a really good greatest hits album by The Counting Crows. It includes all their hits except for one that I feel should have been included, "A Murder of One" it's off their first album "August And Everything After." All together you should buy this album or at least dl and add it to ur collection. I have it on my mp3 player and you should too!

5 out of 5 stars Best of Counting Crows.......2007-01-30

Excellent album, I get it over a year ago and I swear a week doesn't go by where I can't help from putting this cd in my cd player! Nice mix of songs and a good variety too. So no matter what mood ur in this cd has something on it for you!

5 out of 5 stars I've been Counting Crows since I got this album.......2007-01-30

I was never a "real" fan of Counting Crows before seeing them in concert this summer. I had the songs "A Long December," "Mr. Jones," and "Colorblind" in my collection. This "greatest hits" album is a great way to experience the band without buying their myriad of CDs, if you can't afford them. Some of them are old favorites, including two of the three mentioned above. Some were new to me, including "American Girls" and "Einstein on the Beach (For an Eggman)," both of which I had never heard before and now really enjoy. I would suggest, however, that you do purchase "Colorblind" separately, because it is one of their best songs and is not included in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now.......2007-01-21

I recently bought this CD and loved it. Some of the songs are often heard on the radio, and those are the ones I listened to a lot at first, and then I started listening to the rest of the CD and found it was absolutely incredible.

I love that their songs have some point while still being upbeat, for the most part, which is a rare feat- I've found most light songs lack any real depth.

My favorite song on this CD was 'Anna Begins', but they were all amazing.

I also had the chance to see the Counting Crows live in concert, and that was amazing too- I think the live version adds to the depth of the songs, so now I'm planning to buy their live CD as well.

I'd definitely recommend this CD to anyone.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

3 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Amazon.com essential recording

Released in 1981, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a collaboration between ambient pioneer Brian Eno and Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. On Ghosts, the two strong-willed musicians manage to come to a meeting of the minds, blending Byrne's herky-jerky funk with Eno's atmospheric sound sculpting. More than anything, this is a large album, intent on pushing itself to the front of the listener's consciousness. Abundant percussion (everything from booming tribal drums to eerie electronics) reverberates in the background while Byrne and Eno toss all manner of found sounds, field recordings, and radio broadcasts into the mix. What results is a groundbreaking album that introduced a generation to the dazzling possibilities offered by electronic recording techniques. Highlights include "The Jezebel Spirit," an electro-funk workout that uses a recording of an exorcism as its focal point, and "Very, Very Hungry," a mysteriously ethereal display of electronic percussion and large-scale sonic architecture. --S. Duda

Album Description

Brian Eno and David Byrne's My Life in the Bush of Ghosts appears downright visionary. With its "found" vocals, cut-and-paste arrangements, funked-up rhythms and embrace of influences from all around the globe, the duo's controversial work anticipated the creative cross-pollination and technological innovation of contemporary dance music, world music, hip hop and alternative rock. You can hear echoes of My Life in the Bush of Ghosts in the anthems Moby built around vintage vocal samples, in the outrageously exotic beats of Missy Elliot and Timbaland, in the Middle Eastern accented chill-out tracks of Thievery Corporation or Bjork's otherworldly soundscapes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good rerelease of an amazing album.......2007-03-26

I'm not sure how much better the remasters are on this disc than the original recording. They are better, I think, but the change is subtle. (As opposed to, say, the Talking Heads remasters, which are instantly, recognizably, and indisputably superior to the original recordings.) Everything just sounds a little crisper, I guess.

You can compare and ponder the point for some time, but what this rerelease has done is made me go back and listen again to what was a truly remarkable record the first time around and remains so to this day. It has held up amazingly well over the years. Way ahead of its time. Imagine Remain in Light with random samples and looped noise and sampled vocals filling up the spaces that David Byrne voice would normally occupy and you have a sense of it. Incredible.

This version also comes with seven bonus tracks. These range from tracks that truly could have made the album to ones that are just out-and-out bizarre. I adore the final number, guitar with tin foil.

If you already have the original version, I recommend getting this. If you don't have any previous version, you should stop reading this right now and go get it. Now. In fact, I'm not going to type anymore, just so you can go do it.

5 out of 5 stars Jittery masterpiece.......2007-02-12

The one thing that struck me when first listening to the album was how jittery it sounded. The guitars sounded like they were going to explode at any minute....the samples were zooming in from all over the place....it almost sounded like total chaos was in progress. But the more you listen to this, the more you see how much effort went into it. It's also impossibly funky too. In the line between the magnificent Fear of Music and it's more successful follow up Remain in Light....this certainly feels like a jigsaw piece that fits in explaining the slight transition that occured during the making of the album. Having said that, it would be foolish to dismiss this as something that happened inbetween two Talking Heads albums. To do that would be to diminish its status. Really it's a collective, collaborative masterpiece. The amount of consideration that went into it and yet how spontaneous it all sounds is nothing short of amazing. It is the sort of album that everyone should own at least.

5 out of 5 stars A well-deserved 25th anniversary reissue for the groundbreaking album.......2007-01-21

Brian Eno, producer of the Talking Heads' early albums, and David Byrne, singer-songwriter of the Talking Heads, take a left turn and found further common ground in making this groundbreaking album. First released in 1981, the album receives a long deserved reissue for its 25th anniversary.

The 2006 release of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (18 tracks, 60 min.) is more than just a standard reissue. Personally supervised by David Byrne, this is a reworking of the original album, with 7 new tracks and a new tracklisting. The now 18 tracks are now divided up in "3 sides". It bears noting that much of the album was recorded before the Talking Heads' "Remain in Light", but released afterwards (for technical reasons). Listen again to "Remain in Light" and you'll see how much influence "My Life" had on that album. As to this reissue, everthing is done first class: the remastered sound is impeccable, the 28 page booklet is full of interesting information, starting with an excerpt from author Amos Tutuola's 1952 book "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts", from which the album takes its inspiration, to "The Making of" extensive liner notes by Byrne and Eno themselves.

In all, this is surely the definitive version of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" (even with the regrettable omission of the "Qu'run" track). The album has proven over the years to be not merely enormously influential, but better yet thoroughly enjoyable and sounds as fresh today as it did when this came out 25 years ago. Essential for any music fan.

4 out of 5 stars Great experimental CD from the 80's.......2007-01-18

its a true shame the track quran was removed: it was one of the better tracks. Not all important musical works of art hold up over time. This is a significant album from that time period, granted. But mixing "found samples" and the technology to do that has progressed so far at this point, that to my ears, this great album sounds a bit dated. The new re-mastered CD sounds good but still a bit too muddy for my taste. Definately worth several listens. The live soudtrack of Stop Making Sense outshines this CD by a mile and Remain in Light is a far far better "experimental" work from the same time period and also from David Byrne. Byrne's The Catherine Wheel is also more memorable than My Life in the Bush of Ghosts.

5 out of 5 stars Zonky and Out of The Ordinary, Even Today.......2006-11-20

The first thing that struck me about this album was the absolutely unorthodox instrumentation. In many ways, it did feel like a document of erratic tribal exploits. Other tracks, like "America is Waiting" and "Mea Culpa," display an utterly weird approach that still defies explanation. Other songs are deeply atmospheric in nature and transport the listener to some unknown locale. The most conventional track, "Regiment," boasts a groove of the darkest and most macabre variety; it's a perversion of the funk, and only a lone Arabic voice can bring light to this danceable nightmare.

There's nothing on this album that says "this should work," and yet, it all coalesces surprisingly well. Given the state of technology in 1980 compared to today, its easy to see why there's a sort of organic vitality in these compositions that's lacking in today's music. Rarely does such a strange work please the pallate so well.

3 out of 5 stars What makes them interesting also, ironically, hurts them.......2006-12-25

The Crash Test Dummies are a band with a serious baritone voice (Brad Roberts). I mean his voice is really, really low! They are distinguishable since you just do not hear this type of sound a lot. The voice is backed by a fully, accoustic group. The musical accompaniment does not provided enough dynamics to simply deal with the voice. Hence, many of the songs sound similar.

"Winter Song" is tbe best tune because the band uses harmonizing. The song has nice chord changes and is a well written song.

"Coming Back Soon" is also good and it is the most uptempo song.

I do not know if I like "Superman's Song" because of it's novelty or because it is a good song. The song is a dead serious story about personal issues of Superman set to a drop dead harmony (What if Nick Drake sung a song about the Incredible Hulk? Now you get the idea.)

"Thick Necked Man" has a 17th-18th century vibe to it, it's an enjoyable song but bands like Steeleye Span/Jethro Tull do that kind of stuff better.

I bought this when it first came out but I have not listened to it in a decade. I cannot recommend this for the casual listener. You would be better off getting one of the "Mountain Stages" compilations with a live version of "Superman's song" and you will have all the Crash Test Dummies you will ever need.

I am not saying that this is bad. It is quality art. It's just that the songs sound the same and it is easy to tire of the cd

2 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars.......2006-02-03

Known by many non-hard core fans as 'the other CTD album', "The Ghosts That Haunt Me" gives listeners at the time a slice of the unusual CTD sound that was perfected later with the amazing "God Shuffled His Feet" release. "Ghosts..." starts out very promising with the up-tempo number "Winter Song" that boldly announces that this band's sound is really non-mainstream, a very good sign, but subsequent cuts steadily drag the album down with melody that just doesn't seem to hit its mark. "Superman's Song" ultimatly is the best cut on the album and a fine cut it is indeed. Production values are fine leaning a bit more 'violiny' and 'harmonica-y' than the later "God..." effort, which was given a more streamlined bottom heavy production. Overall it was a fine effort for the band, but pales in comparison to their next release.

5 out of 5 stars Got me hooked on the band..........2005-08-12

Last summer I was repairing computers at a local school, and my coworker decided to take a coffee break. When we went down to the gas station, he put this CD in his car stereo. I instantly fell in love with the style of the music. Compared to some of the stuff I had heard on the radio in recent months, it was a breath of fresh air.

Some of the tracks are upbeat folksy tunes that are a satisfying blend of country and rock. This is all the tracks except the third and tenth. Parents be warned that the seventh track is PG-13 rated due to some explisatives. Most of these have to do with the country life with the exception of the eighth track which is a cover of Androgynous. The other two (three and ten) are ballads. The third is an insightful look at Superman, and the tenth is a bit of a surprise compared to the rest of the album, as it deals with Brad Roberts thinking about the day he dies. It's very thought provoking.

There's two other tracks that could have been on this debut album, but didn't make it. They were included on the demo tapes put out by CTD in Canada years ago and are "Fundies Never Have Fun on Sundays" (sung by Ellen Reid), and "Row Bullies Row" (the classic Scottish folk song). Ghosts is a rather short album, at just a little over 37 minutes, but it's a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CTD album, hands down.......2005-08-04

This was my first exposure to Crash Test Dummies. A brother had the album, and it was very uncharacteristic of the music I was listening to and that was playing on alternative rock stations at the time--a strange blend of country, bluegrass-y...whatever... But it totally grew on me, and when I went back to college, I missed it, and so got the CD myself. Most other folks I've run into and played it for (including my college roomies), had much the same reaction. Now, 14 years later, when I called one of my old college roomies recently, he goes, "guess what I'm listening to?!" That's right, this album.

So what is it about this album? Most of the themes that come up in their later works, the dark melancholy, are there in this album, too...but unlike their later work, that dark melancholy has lighter themes next to it, but even more importantly, their themes are mostly treated to light, engaging, "happy" melodies and instrumentation ("Superman's Song" and "At My Funeral" are the two notable exceptions). That instrumentation, is also one of the joys of this album. Twangy, different string instruments, and just a full light sound mix with the light melodies and contrast with Roberts' awesomely deep voice to make a catchy, unforgettable, and easily-hummed mix that just stays with you.

Think of it as Crash Test Dummies having a great time while thinking some occasional dark thoughts.

That's why I like this CD best. There may be dark thoughts in there, but they're fun and happy and jangly in spite of them. There later ones seemed to progressively lose sight of the happy part.

And though there are times when dark and moody and depressing in music is good... I generally prefer the happy stuff. I could be shallow that way.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Band.......2005-06-02

I just finished listening to "The Crash Test Dummies" C.D. "The Ghosts That Haunt Me" and I thought it was pretty good. If you are in the mood for some relaxing evening music than this is the C.D. to have. My favourite song on this C.D. has to be Superman's Song. Although the C.D. is slightly short, it is still a keeper.

Sex and drugs and rock & roll have figured prominently in Placebo's glitterered-up, androgynous music. Sleeping with Ghosts is a little more coy than past recordings, dealing more with the torturous psychological aspects of relationships than with the exchange of body fluids. Not that there isn't any room for fetishism. "This Picture," for example, apparently dwells on sado-masochism and comes over as just the sort of trash-glam pop stomp once associated with Suede. "The Bitter End" ("Since we're feeling so anaesthatized") is a big, bruising, fatalistic rocker. At times it's hard to tell whether Brian Molko is repulsed or perversely inspired by his subject matter, although he's definitely bored with the bloody weather (the cheerless "English Summer Rain" is a subdued pop tune driven by rhythmic electronic jolts) and the waltz- time, Doors-influenced "Protect Me from What I Want" finds him praying to be delivered from his own personal temptations. Sleeping with Ghosts, however, is as much an album for slam-dancing nights out at Goth haunts as it is music for the psychiatrist's couch. --Kevin Maidment

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Beautiful.......2006-10-26

I'll start out by saying that I'm biased and am a huge fan of Placebo. I love the way that the band has progressed and believe that each album that they've put out has something that someone can connect to in some way or another. I've owned this one for awhile and it is easily my favorite Placebo disk. There are dark songs, but there are also songs of hope mingling throughout. However, both the dark and the light songs rip through with an energy that is pure rock and roll and pure Placebo. Brian's vocals have so much conviction on this album it is as if he wrote part of a journal entry of his own life. Standout tracks for me have to be the songs of hope, which to me are "Sleeping with Ghosts", which insists that two who were meant to be together will be, through whatever may happen, good or bad. The other one would have to be "Plasticine", which just tells people not to be ashamed of themselves for anything. It's a shame that these two tracks never got airplay. The rest of the album is worth every penny too. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need........2006-09-21

As with other reviews i've done, i'll start out saying that Placebo is my favorate band ever. And that this album came out during the height of my obsession with their music. At the time, life was in turmoil, so their previous album(Black Market Music) and this one quickly became my personal soundtrack to losing hope. I still can't listen to this album without getting some sort of intense flashback.
The album isn't without its perky points, such as the opening blast of Bulletproof Cupid, or This Picture. However a great deal of the album drives itself into that dark romantic feel that made bands like the Cure and Depeche great. In the USA, its always amazing how the band never became larger then they are, as I find them a very easy hook for friends looking for a new group.
Although if you plan to buy this album, I would recommend looking for the special edition with the covers disc included. Its almost a full album in itself and very much worth the extra price.

5 out of 5 stars Ambient, soothing beauty........2006-05-25

A problem with the music industry today is that artists are portrayed - both by the media and through their music - as being larger than life. This image can often create a barrier to the listener when hearing their music, which stops them from connecting properly with the emotions being evoked. The beauty of "Sleeping With Ghosts" lies in Placebo's ability to remove this metaphorical barrier and expose the listener to the full impact of the emotions being evoked. Listening to "Sleeping With Ghosts" is an experience I find to be akin to talking with a close friend, in that the band make no attempt to salvage the "rock star" image amidst the tender, unpretentious beauty on offer.

Many people would be fast to label Placebo as an indie or pop-rock act, but personally I see them as a more progressive band. Their quietly hypnotic quality feels to me closely reminiscient of Pink Floyd. Part of Placebo's capability to really closely connect with the listener actually stems, I feel, from their musical simplicity. The guitar and drum lines on offer are far from being technically complex, but they do have an ambient flow to them which promotes the soothing nature of the music. Brian Molko's voice is also not what would be traditionally considered "beautiful". On the contrary it's actually quite nasal, and if it were used in the wrong way would certainly fall on the wrong side of annoying. However, in the way his vocal lines glide gracefully over the music, they too adopt a quietly ambient hue. A few piano lines thrown in here and there don't hurt either; in fact, they give the album a new layer and serve to magnify the experience.

The song structures too, play a large role in creating "Sleeping With Ghosts'" hypnotic atmosphere. Most often they start out with a normal verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, but as the song gains momentum, this structure is abandonned for an uninterupted flow at a fixed tempo. However, this transition is managed so smoothly that you'll hardly notice it until the song is nearly finished. You'll often find Brian Molko repeating the same line over and over (not irritating at all, surprisingly). It's easy to lose yourself in the graceful, hypnotic tunes and end up drifting away. What's even more impressive is that this structure never gets old, as is is fitted to each song's individual style.

The production too, plays a small role in creating this work of art. The guitars are in no way produced to be loud or raucous and thus their soothing quality remains untainted, while the drums are just loud enough to give the music backbone, while not so loud as to be obtrusive. If any fault is to be found, I would say that Brian Molko's voice sits too highly in the mix. If his voice was a little quieter and given a bit of reverb, it could have a distant quality (akin to Garm's on Ulver's album "Bergtatt") which would have made the music even more ambient. However, in the grand scheme of things this is a small complaint.

So, if you've read this far you already know what my verdict is: "Sleeping With Ghosts" is a masterwork, possibly the best piece of alternative music to grace our world for years. It offers us something genuinely rare; a chance to sit down for 46 minutes and visit a place inside our own heads where all of our rushed, hectic lifestyle ceases to exist.

5 out of 5 stars So Under-rated,both band and album.......2006-04-23

Bands come and go, this is a band that is still going but sadly never really came to the limelight they deserve. This album is my favourite from their collection, songs like "special needs" still keep their original sound, "english summer rain" is such a great song, for anyone lucky to see them live then this song will move you. I think if you're looking for an introcudtion to the band then buy their "black market music" album as its more single orientated, but if you love the band then this album is just fantastic as it adds a little bit more to their sound than before.

Another Placebo album that is passionate and evocative. The sounds is great and Brian's voice is amazing, as always.

Director Sam Mendes's much-anticipated follow-up to his Academy Award ®-winning American Beauty found him exploring the period gangster film--but with a moral fiber and undercurrent of family tragedy familiar from his Oscar ® triumph. As he did with Beauty, Mendes again wisely entrusts the film's music to Tom Newman, a composer with an instinctive knack for getting inside a film's characters via innovative and often orthodox methods. As many of Newman's preceding scores have been rhythmically driven and rife with improvisation-driven experimentalism, its good to hear his equally distinctive writing for orchestra largely take center stage here again. But Newman's inquisitive musical instincts can't be denied, and his melancholy string writing is leavened first with subtle uilleann pipe flourishes that echo the characters' Irish-American roots, then with savory, yet ever-restrained touches of his own ethnic-defying instrumental color and rhythmic accents. It's another moody and introspective gem, seasoned with some lively period jazz (courtesy of the Charleston Chasers, Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra, and Chicago Rhythm Kings) and a warm, final surprise: a duet of John M. Williams's autumnal title track performed by none other than stars Tom Hanks and Paul Newman. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Fathers & Sons.......2007-05-13

After losing my Father back in October, I began reaching for things that reminded me of him. One of the things I reached for was the score for the Road to Perdition. Although my Father was gravely ill the day I took him to see the film, it ended up being a day not soon forgotten. I am listening to the soundtrack as I write this review. Fathers and Sons.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Wonderful.......2006-12-18

This soundtrack is amazing. Like Shawshank Redemption, Newman's music colors the film, reveals character, and highlights themes. I've listened to this soundtrack dozens of times, and I still love it. From the mournful "Piano Duet" to the driving "Lexington Hotel", this is a great purchase regardless of whether or not you liked the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Tells The Story.......2006-04-12

Wonderful soundtrack. If you've seen the movie, you can listen to these tracks and almost guess what or who they are written for in the script. I think Thomas Newman is the drummer of their composer family, because almost all of his music has the underlying ryhthms that make you tap to the beat (even though this is classically orchestrated music), with music that perfectly breathes the air of the times it was written for.

5 out of 5 stars Road to Excellence!.......2006-03-14

I own both the movie and the score, and I have to tell you, this film would not be half of what it is without this gorgeous, mellow, and sometimes violent and aggressive score. It really carries the film, and I think it even surpasses it some. Newman really outdid himself this time!

5 out of 5 stars Holiday music with that extra magic - creepiness!.......2007-01-26

If you are in a holiday mood, but are heartily fed up with Irish (or even worse: Mariah Carey!) Christmas songs, then you might want to consider this album. It is not a soundeffect album, nor is it program music. A final touch is that it is not cheaply produced, as some more traditional holiday albums.
The music conveys a feeling of cold, dark, and immensly lonely winter. The Christmas is there, but there are undertows of older and more sinister rituals, and whispers call the more unwary listeners to join in...
This album could be a very good way to spice up the celebrations.

5 out of 5 stars Another brilliant Nox Arcana CD!.......2007-01-03

Nox Arcana's versatility has made them a tough act to follow. Whether it be a musical journey into the foreboding land of vampires (Transylvania) or a sinister carnival with a bloody history (Carnival of Lost Souls) or any of their other forays into gothic imaginings, Nox Arcana has taken each concept and breathed impressive, symphonic life into it. Their CDs truly are mini symphonies, with astounding musicianship and intricate orchestrations.

In Winter's Knight, Nox Arcana presents a moody, elegant collection of holiday-themed songs that captures the more mystical, meditative side of Christmas. The CD's strong medieval/classical flavor is refreshing, particularly since most Christmas music nowadays seems dominated by more modern songs. Joseph Vargo and William Piotrowski offer great new arrangements of classic pieces like "Veni, Veni, Emmanuel" as well as many of their own moving compositions, such as the memorably haunting "Crystal Forest" and the chilling piano-dominated "Evening Star." Guest vocalist Michelle Belanger also contributes a lovely interpretation of the holiday standard "Past Time With Good Company" and Jeff Endemann's vocal work on "Coventry Carol" is likewise a highlight.

While most Christmas music is, unfortunately, either infantile and annoying or overdone, Winter's Knight provides a refreshing change of piece full of musical elegance and mystical beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Music to be enchanted by.......2006-12-25

As mesmerizing as falling snow, this poetic and magickal soundscape creates a wonderland of lavish treats befitting the Holiday Season. Haunting and sophisticated, there's a certain luster to these songs that reflects the gothically romantic luxury only Nox Arcana can deliver. The addition of neo-bard, Jeff Endemann's spellbinding voice on "Coventry Carol" delivers an extra gift of warmth for those chilly Yuletide evenings. The original score by Vargo and Piotrowski interspersed with classic carols and a booklet of eye-candy artwork by Joseph Vargo makes this a perfect fit for any Holiday Collection, so fill your wassail cup, pull up some moonlight and breathe in the wonder of Winter Knights.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good, Different.......2006-11-04

The idea behind this CD and the music itself are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant holiday music scene. Dark and evocative, it pushes aside the sugarplums and saccharine we're all used to. However, the production leaves quite a bit to be desired. It's all done with computers - the choral parts are lacking in fullness, I can't always tell what the stringed "instruments" are supposed to be, and rather than cadences that would give finality to the piece, the tracks often come to a sudden stop. 3 1/2 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Why do I have to be the bad guy?.......2007-05-19

So I was floating out in the Pacific Ocean and I asked my wife for this CD. As soon as it was delivered to the ship, I popped it in and listened. Next track...Next track...Next track. This all sounds the same. Being at sea, opening mail is like Christmas day, and this was like I got a pair of sox instead of a bike. And why is this a double disc? Both CD's are the exact same thing. Could you at least put some kind of effect on the guitar so I could say, "Hey, this doesn't ALL sound the same." I dont think Mark Kozelek is trying to gain fans because this album really turned me off to the modern folk american singer/songwriter. Switch it up a bit, big guy. I'd love to hear a some drum and bass thrown in. Did someone say remix? = ) Holla!

P.S. I do like three Red House Painters songs.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant, Haunting Album (slightly enhanced by the bonus CD).......2007-02-12

Since this package is a rerelease with bonus material -- and since the original release now appears to be out of print -- I'll reiterate my original review below with a paragraph at the end about the bonus tracks.

Album of the Year, 2003

With his early '90s band, the Red House Painters, San Francisco's Mark Kozelek struck a chord of disquiet and bohemian poignancy that made that band the darling of the scribbling-poems-to-the-pretty-barista-who-will-never-know-my-name set. With lovely, unadorned melodies and Kozelek's angst-ridden tributes to disillusionment, the Red House Painters influenced a score of later bands who lacked his rich melodic imagination and incisive lyrics -- Low is a good example -- resulting in Kozelek himself being typecast as the maestro of "mopecore." Then he did something unforgivable in the minds of some of his fans: he evolved.

Without rehashing the epic travails and record-biz nightmares that caused RHP's fine album "Old Ramon" to be delayed in release for years after it was finished, the good news is that "Ghosts of the Great Highway" not only continues the evolutionary path Kozelek took on later RHP work like "Songs for a Blue Guitar" and his solo album "Rock and Roll Singer," it's a masterpiece on its own terms, and the most magnificent rock album of 2003.

If you thought they didn't make albums like Neil Young's "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" anymore, cue up "Ghosts of the Great Highway," and marvel over the fact that Kozelek and company are able to cross-pollinate folk, country, punk, and psychedelic influences without sounding the least bit retro, stealing the purifying flame of Crazy Horse meltdowns like "Cortez the Killer" while sounding like no one but themselves. If you're a Nick Drake fan warming your hands over the ashes of "Pink Moon," consider the fact that at least one song on this album, "Duk Koo Kim," is as beautiful and otherwordly as anything in Drake's oeuvre (particularly the acoustic version, released on a limited edition EP last year), and consider the possibility that Kozelek is as unfairly ignored and marginalized in our time as Drake was in his.

"Glenn Tipton," "Duk Koo Kim," "Carry Me Ohio" and "Gentle Moon" are all instant classics, full of heart, understated grace, and authentic yearning, while avoiding the art-school sentimentality of Kozelek's early work. "Duk Koo Kim" is especially worthy of note, reinvented here as a 14-minute folk-punk-psychedelic apocalypse, with backwards guitars, Portuguese guitars, and bells swirling around Kozelek's aching voice. (I can't praise this track enough, other than to say that if I was a very bright teenager with a set of headphones and a bong, I'd probably decide to become a musician after hearing this song alone.) It's one of the most terrifying love songs ever written, as emotionally naked as the songs on Joni Mitchell's "Blue." (Like several of the songs on this album, "Duk Koo Kim" is the tale of a hero who died young -- in this case, a Korean boxer killed in the ring.) The only misstep on the record is Kozelek's formula-grunge treatment of his gorgeous tune "Lily and Parrots," which appeared as a hidden acoustic track on his "White Christmas Live."

At his best, Kozelek writes and sings like an oracle, and plays feedback-drenched electric guitar with as much intensity as his punk and heavy metal heroes while never descending into mere chaos and noise. If you're a music critic or record reviewer (I happen to be an editor of Wired magazine, and have no connection to Kozelek), entertain the notion that instead of hyping the latest skinny-tie buzz band that no one will care about in 3 years, you might consider running a piece on Kozelek and this album. If you're a music fan who enjoys Wilco, Iron and Wine, and other forward-looking traditionally-influenced bands, give this a listen. It's far beyond what almost everyone is doing these days.

"Ghosts" disc two, 2007

Hearing these bonus tracks (two brilliant, one fine, and two only mediocre), I suggest that what Kozelek should have done was to release "Ghosts" originally with the instrumental "Arrival" inserted somewhere in the running order, and finishing with either version of "Somewhere." Kozelek's reinvention of West Side Story's yearning love song is profound, heart-wrenching, and gorgeous. (The yearning is even more poignant knowing that the song's composers, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein, were gay and bisexual respectively, but the feelings expressed are universal.) "Somewhere" would have been an emotionally devastating capper to a magnificent album; at least we have it now. I prefer the slightly punchier second take, which employs the same Portuguese guitar-like instrument as "Duk Koo Kim" on the original album, but the string arrangement on the first version is also lovely. The straightforward folky reading of "Salvador Sanchez" is fine; the other two bonus tracks are merely competent. In my dreams, Kozelek would also have supplemented this bonus disc with the astounding double-tracked acoustic version of "Duk Koo Kim" that appeared only on a vinyl EP -- it's one of the true masterpieces of his career, and is now in danger of being a "lost" track available only to connoisseurs. But enough second-guessing. This is a great album, now made slightly greater.

4 out of 5 stars Woken up from a dream last night, somewhere lost in war..........2007-02-10

To me, this is Mark Kozelek's masterpiece. Ever since I purchased this album in 2004, it's been one of my favorite albums, and I believe now, it is my favorite album. There's a little bit of everything on this album and that's why I like it so much. The guitar-laden "Salvador Sanchez," the driving rhythms of "Lily and Parrots," the nostalgia of "Carry Me Ohio," and the epic "Duk Koo Kim." The only thing holding me back from giving this re-issued album five stars is the bonus disc. I don't think it has much to offer. The versions of Leonard Bernsteins are good, the first version being better than the other, but not really noteworthy. The radio version of "Gentle Moon" and the acoustic version of "Carry Me Ohio" are both off a little bit vocally, and I think the live versions on "Little Drummer Boy" is much better, vocally and musically. The only song I actually really dig on the bonus disk is "Arrival," a two-to-three minute instrumental. But you're the consumer, so buy it and make up your mind as well.

Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts is the second album from French electronica duo M83 (Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau) who, thankfully, derive their name from a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Hydra and not from an interminably lackluster stretch of noxious British motorway. The name certainly nods to where their wide-eyed, spaced-out technicolor imaginations are fixed, but they also know how to sound ponderously intense--hence the cold, cello-aided sonority of "Gone," possibly the only track on the album that defies the lambent warmth of the purring analog synths and beguiling reveries that make the rest of the album as enticingly therapeutic as a thermal spa.

Humane post-rock is clearly M83's strongest attribute because both "Run into Flowers" and "On a White Lake, Near a Green Mountain" are curiously pretty cameos, far removed from the automatic anemia of other workmanlike button-pushers. The high point, though, is the symphonic sweetness and motherly female choral vocals of "Beauties Can Die," which is rather like being cradled in the arms of an angel, or at the very least the arms of Sigur Ros and Lesley Garrett. If one really has to die and go to heaven, one rather hopes the journey up there will sound like this. --Kevin Maidment

1 out of 5 stars worst dream/ambient pop ive ever heard..........2006-10-19

there's nothing pretty about any of these supposed shoegaze-esque cheeseball ballads. Sounds like jesus and marychain on a casio...go buy ulrich schnauss, at least he can write a melody instead of drone for an hour...kind of brings to mind metal-machine music, dont you think?

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-10-08

M83 totally blows me away. It's really difficult to describe their music, but I'll take a stab it here. You might say that their music is "post-apocalyptic" - i.e. the kind of music one might expect to hear after the apocalypse, if that makes any sense. Many of their songs might be described as HUGE, with layer upon layer of really intense music. This is what I like to call headphone music. It's really not the kind of music to listen to casually in your car, but more like something you'd listen to while sitting on the floor in the dark or lying in bed wide awake at 3 AM. And it's not exactly easy music to listen to either. I've really never heard anything like this, and it demands your full attention if you really expect to "get it".

3 out of 5 stars Musical Snowstorm.......2006-07-17

M83s chaotic and scratchy start soon blooms into hypnotic lyrics that suddenly end. The next track is somewhat hypnotic in its awakening and fuzzy and static in sleepy ways.

Electronic voices seem to be exploring the landscape without any direction, wandering like lost souls across a newly found bliss. If you like white noise, this may intrigue you. It feels like you are walking through a snowstorm of sound on the first CD.

The second CD seemed much more grounded and Tsuase was intriguing. Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts seems to be the creative high of the two albums and while there is a consistent humming, nature sounds explore the heights.

3 out of 5 stars 3 and a HALF stars.......2006-07-11

Wow. It seems as if you have to think this is a legendary album or you hate it with a passion. No median? Hey, this is a good CD. I was blown away a few times, I was dancing uncontrollably a few times. I am not going to rip this album apart just because it wasn't legendary. I cant listen to the entire CD and say this is the greatest thing I have ever heard. I can say, however, that its worth buying and my ears were satisfied. I would say listen to it for yourself and decide weather you like it. I dont think you will be let down.
