5 out of 5 stars "If I Were A Killer" is the one of the best metal songs ever!!.......2005-12-11

I still play this oldy and still think that one song from this great CD should be on every metalhead's top 10 song list. That song is "If I Were A Killer". Play it and play it loud!

4 out of 5 stars Galactic Cowboys - 'Space In Your Face' (DGC).......2005-03-11

Their 2nd effort. Some say this disc is the band's best release.I have a couple of their other CD's lying around in my basement somewhere.Galactic appears to possess the similar vocal harmony talent to that,of...say,King's X,along with a powerful rhythm section and heavy guitar work intact.A couple of key tracks here are "You Make Me Smile","If I Were A Killer","No Problem" and the hidden cut "Ranch On Mars".Just good heavy rock for your senses to take in.Might appeal to fans of Kyuss,Rammstein,Monster Magnet and possibly Circus Of Power.

5 out of 5 stars Their Finest Hour..........2004-11-29

This is, IMHO, GC's best album, hands down. Excellent songwriting, flawless production (produced by the great Sam Taylor), intelligent and often funny lyrics and song subjects... One second you're hearing 4 (or is it 5?) part vocal harmonies, and a few seconds later you're putting your head through the wall. This album rocks hard - every song is good, with no "filler" tunes at all.

This is their second album, following the self-titled one (which, although also excellent, is second place to this one). This was Dane Sonnier's last GC album, which IMHO is a bad thing. The overall sound and direction of the band changed radically after this record. If you have any of their other albums and like GC, it's inconceivable to me that you would not like this.

4 out of 5 stars great cheapskate discovery .......2005-07-05

Great rockers that sound inspired by the likes of King's X and Cheap Trick. Heavy riffs with great singing. The great thing about this group is you can find their cds at bargain basement prices. I know pebozo will appreciate this because he's the cheapest heap of Sanford and Son junk in this hemisphere.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic album from a band that deserved more.......2004-10-11

The second-to-last album by Galactic Cowboys is one of their best, and in my opinion would've made a more fitting final album than "Let It Go". A good, consistent album, and the last to feature Alan Doss on drums (it also contains his sole lead-vocal performance, "Through", which is pretty good!). Along with the group's second album, "Space In Your Face", I consider this to be the pinnacle of Galactic Cowboys' work. Had the band been given more promotion or attention, who knows how far they could've gone. Truly an untapped talent.

5 out of 5 stars Un-freakin-real..........2000-10-17

I love this band. I have since the debut album. They will be sorely missed. This album is one of their best, along with Space In Your Face. To me, they've always sounded like what would happen if Metallica, Pantera, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles got together and jammed at a Monty Python convention. True, that's not exactly "commercially viable," but they never have been. And if you're looking for something that's NOT going to challenge your ears to accept contrasting sonic textures and styles, this is NOT the band to listen to. The fact that they can do that, and pull it off, AND write amazing songs ... is a testimony to their brilliance. Buy all their albums!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant........2000-04-20

The Galactic Cowboys are probably the best band no-one has ever heard of. Ok, some people know about them, but not nearly as many as a band this great deserves. AT THE END OF THE DAY is an instant classic, not sounding like any one specific sub-genre of METAL or POP or ROCK. Their ability to blend Rock, Metal, and Pop so effortlessly just showcases how brilliant the Galactic Cowboys are. From near Thrash-Metal tunes (with melody and hooks, though), to nice, catchy pop flavored Rock, AT THE END OF THE DAY covers it all. The amazing thing is how cohesive the album is - it all fits together perfectly! Sometimes in the same song! With so many great songs, I won't even attempt to single them out. I'll just leave it at this; Power, melody, musicianship. Shame on you if you don't at least try it!

5 out of 5 stars Is there anything more?.......2000-01-29

This group of Galactic Cowboys has dug through the trenches of the music industry for most of their career. But, don't be fooled by an apparent lack of sales compared to the rest of 'popular music'-- This group is one of the most underappreciated groups of the 1990's, but is resurging in 2000(all of the fans know this) Everything about the music on this album is fully "HOOK HEAVY"--if you want real music with soul, integrity, simple in-your-face massive riffs, plenty of singability and most importantly HONESTY. "The Machine Fish Suite" is something that will be remembered as a true heavy masterpiece. Please do yourself a favor and buy this album. In fact, go buy all of the Galactic Cowboy's albums and see what you're missing.

5 out of 5 stars Their absolute best.......2006-03-04

THey really did a good job, this group. This cd is extremely well done. There is a cross between Cheap Trick, King's X and The Cult. The vocals are really good and there is a lot to entertain oneself with. Too bad they are no longer a group as of 2006.

3 out of 5 stars A different ending.......2004-10-11

Galactic Cowboys knew this was going to be their final album. Having been a fan, I rushed out the day it was released with mixed feelings -- excited to get a new Galactic Cowboys album, but sad that it would be the last. Upon listening to it, I got the impression that their heart wasn't with this one -- perhaps I'm wrong, but that's the feeling I got from it. Drummer Alan Doss had already called it quits, but lent his services as mixer. It's a striking difference from their previous album, the excellent "At The End Of The Day". Standout tracks include "T.I.M." and "Hey Mr." -- in which the band seems to fill the stereotype of religious conservatives by taking swipes at Bill Clinton and NPR.

If you're new to Galactic Cowboys, I recommend "Space In Your Face" or "At The End Of The Day" instead.

5 out of 5 stars Reluctantly, I let it go...........2002-06-29

The is the way I would hope to end any endeavor: on top, excelling, smashing thru the finish line, not crawling. Too bad the perennial grand-dad bands, The Rolling Stones & Aerosmith, haven't figured out this lesson.

I've got this album flowing thru my speakers as I write this, and I am slack-jawed, on the 700+th listen. Who is Reuben, anyway?

Their senses of humor are wildly evident, their clear-minded and appropriately-balance cynicism against Pop and "Normal", their insight, and--of course--the driving music all impress me.

I'm just completely annoyed that I discovered them (for myself) as this album was released. Perhaps someday I'll get ahead of the curve.

Good luck, Cowboys, as you ride off into the Sunset!!

3 out of 5 stars But I don't want to let go!..........2002-02-22

3 and 1/2 stars: This is GC's swan song and it's a pretty darn good one. All their trademark heavy riffs, goofy insights, introspective lyrics and ballads are here in spades. I would have given the disc a higher rating but really, what is the point of "Boom" and "Bucket of Chicken"? I know the guys have active senses of humor, but I just thought those tracks were stupid. Also, "Dirty Hands" is pretty dull. ALL THAT SAID, this is a great disc, especially "TIM", "Disney's Spinnin'", and "Another Hill" (listen to the massive bass guitar on that one!) are awesome. Not essential, but very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Out of This World...........2001-01-13

What a farewell outing this is! This is their strongest outing yet. Great songs from start to finish, topped with an excellent production from guitarist Wally Farkas. Fans of vintage Cowboys and Kings X circa "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" will love this! This CD is chock full of soaring harmonies, great chord structures and excellent lyrics (check out "Disney's Spinnin'"). Standout tracks include: "A Different Way", "Life and Times", "Disney's Spinnin'", "Another Hill" and "Swimming In December". All GC fans and fans of melodic metal MUST buy this.

3 out of 5 stars It's not the same.......2007-06-24

This album isn't bad, but it's just such a tremendous step down from Space in your Face and the debut album that it can earn no more than 3 stars from me.

The Galactic Cowboys are an original, talented, and entertaining band, but they've proven that they can write far better material than this. Get Space in your Face first and foremost, and wait on this one unless you're convinced that the Cowboys are for you. They can do better.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-10-15

Try an electric Beatles with a King'X twist. This is definitive Galactic. No silly songs just good rock. The vocals are refined and the music is on the mark.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Effort.......2005-07-12

Some great songs on this one. Good solid rock band in the style of King's X. Love the song Oregon- awesome.

4 out of 5 stars One of my Fav's!.......2004-11-10

First off, let me say that (like most of you) I'm writing this review after the unfortunate demise of the Galactic Cowboys. If I had to pick out 1 band in the history of music that should have gotten more attention, they are the big winners for sure! Their extremely melodic 4-part vocals harmonies mixed with their creative song structures & heavy sound caused them to have something that 99% of most bands today don't have: ORIGINALITY. I miss these guys terribly!!

This review is for their mid- to later-period recording entitled, "The Horse That Bud Bought" (I'll refer to it as THTBB). Out of all of their recordings, I would say that THTBB is probably their most "pop-py" and straight forward. But, ironically, it stands as one of my favorite recordings by the band, regardless of the genre classification. The production is strong and the songs are well formed for the attempt to reach into the semi-pop world. Keep in mind that any band never really hides its true identity, so where the reach toward a pop-ish angle is there, the band's creative edge is still present throughout this recording. Strong songs are the incredibly melodic "Evil Twin," "Trip On Love" (one of my fav.Galactic Cowboy songs), "My Life," and "Ribbon." And for more edgy, classic, early-ish Galactic Cowboy diddies, try out "Tomorrow" or the progressive-edged "Media Slant." Most of all, I found that this particular CD really grows on you over time with the great strength of the song writing throughout the recording. I do, feel, however that certain characteristic features of the band are a little LESS prominent on this CD (as with most of their later period recordings), such as their immense vocal harmonies (which are primarily knocked down to 2 and 3 part, rather than 4 part) and their longer, more epic forms of song writing. Hence, the comparison to a more "pop-ish" type sound.

There's 1 single reason why I gave it only 4 stars though... Just because their first 2 recordings ('Galactic Cowboys' and 'Space In Your Face') are so incredibly strong that it is almost impossible to top the quality of those classic progressive/metal CDs. I feel that they had a touch of magic on those 2 that was never reached again on later recordings. However, THTBB was the closest to achieving greatness again for this highly gifted band. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars melodic heavy rock.......2003-01-15

The Cowboys are one of rock's most underrated bands. They definitely have that Houston sound (heavy guitars with nice vocal harmonies). The opening track is just great. Other notable songs include, Oregon, Evil Twin, Tomorrow. I've seen these guys three times live, and their stage presence and energy is unparalleled. Too bad they're no longer around.

5 out of 5 stars Another great GC album.......2005-07-01

I give all Galactic Cowboys album 5 stars. They are awesome. Especially for any lover of Megadethtallica floyd music with beatles/king's x harmony vocals. some songs may be similar (they apparently wrote a lot in drop D locrian/minor on this album) but the slower ones gave it just enough variancy. A great comeback after a temporary breakup.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2002-01-31

I like every song on here but two. This is a straight-ahead melodic/power metal disc that is REALLY catchy. You can hum to this stuff and the three or four part vocal harmonies are great a la King's X. If you only get one cd by these guys, make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars a very good melodic metal band.......2000-11-09

galactic cowboys is awesome. too bad that ugly (....) dog mtv doesn't cater to metalheads anymore because if they did, this album would light up request lines. my favorite song is psychotic companion, which is also featured on metalmeister 1. i cannot emphasize enough on the quality of this band and their labelmates king's x.

4 out of 5 stars Superb, if somewhat uniform, album.......2000-06-03

This is a great album and a fine example of the Galactic Cowboys' musical skills. Almost all of the tracks are great examples of essentially how to rock. Only "Easy to Love" and "Arrow" disappoint, the former because of it's rather sappy lyrics and weak music, the latter if only because of the incredibly grating ticking noise throughout the whole song (did someone leave a metronome on?).

The lyrics in general tend to be the crisp clever output that exists on most of the Cowboys' albums, with "Psychotic Companion" providing the prototypical clever, cute, catchy song that would become a semi-staple later with "Evil Twin" off of _The Horse That Bud Bought_ and "Where Do I Sign?" off of _At the End of the Day_.

The biggest problem I have with this album is that it has a tendency to run together without enough variance in songs. The previously mentioned Psychotic Companion tends to stand out, as does "Pattin' Yourself on the Back" for its pace that's amazingly more frenetic than the rest of the album. The rest of the album, the first 4 tracks in particular, just don't provide enough distinction between each other. This isn't to say that they aren't distinguishable, but simply that the album really needed something more to provide better pacing.

3 out of 5 stars well..................to be objective.......1999-10-06

This certainly is not a bad album, but 5 stars is way too many. Actually it deserves 3,35 stars but it just wasn't an option! There are some really good songs on it, but, like almost al CD's, there are some weak songs on it.

5 out of 5 stars excellent cd - really good band.......2007-07-08

Heard of them thru association with the incredible King's X. This GC cd is really a classic. It's got a lot of variety yet very consistent and rocking. Excellent band and this is my favorite cd of theirs.

4 out of 5 stars Hard edge.......2005-07-27

Harder than the other stuff. They were serious about making hard rock and at times heavy metal. The singer seems more focused and away from silliness, unlike other releases which tend to focus on silly vocal variations. i bet they would have gone farther if they would have stayed on this venue.

3 out of 5 stars A good start, but the best was yet to come.......2004-10-11

Galactic Cowboys' debut album starts off with 3 strong tracks, but lags a bit from there on, with the exception of "Kill Floor" -- speaking of which, I found it a bit odd that a group of professed Christians would compose a song that many Christians in positions of authority would cite as violent and, most likely, as being a negtive influence. But at any rate, it's worth the cost of the album for those 4 songs alone. If you're new to Galactic Cowboys, I'd suggest picking up "Space In Your Face" or "At The End of The Day" first.

5 out of 5 stars cult CLASSIC.......2003-06-06

GC never made it big commercially, but their debut album earned them a legion of devoted fans. If you like heavy, crunchy guitars, 3 & 4 part vocal harmonies (actual singing, not just yelling), songwriting that is catchy and accessible yet at the same time complex enough to be interesting, lyrics that are intelligent and humorous, production that is crisp and clean.... I could go on and on.

This, their debut album, is second only to SPACE IN YOUR FACE (their second effort). Both albums were produced by the magnificent Sam Taylor. After that the sound of the band changed quite a bit, with the loss of both Taylor and guitarist Dane Sonnier.

If you buy this and like it, get yourself a copy of SPACE IN YOUR FACE off of ebay or whatever, as it is no longer being printed, and is, IMHO, the Cowboys' finest hour.

4 out of 5 stars Where It All Began..........2003-03-09

The Galactic Cowboys were probably one of the most underrated bands in the metal/rock genre... probably because they were a little too hard to simply throw into a box. The best way I can describe their sound to someone who hasn't heard it is to say that they've managed to combine some of the crunch of Metallica and Pantera, with the hooks and harmony vocals of The Beatles, a touch of the lushness of Pink Floyd (here and there), and a subtle dashing of Monty Pythonesque humor.

Yes, that is possible - though I must admit, it's an acquired taste.

I like this album - but I think "Space In Your Face" is a little better. Worth having though - It's the perfect example of a band that was doing something different, and not enough people got it. Shame really. They're great writers, and very nice guys. They will be missed greatly...

4 out of 5 stars kiss and McCartney.......2000-01-01

The Kiss song"I want You" is an awesome song in its original form. Galactic Cowboys put their own creative, heavy twist on it. And i must say it rocks. "Junior's Farm" sound amazingly like the original. Very cool. And the previously unreleased "Paradigm Shift" is a great tune. The final "hidden"track is a trip too. Its good to see rock bands still having fun.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, I guess.......1999-08-22

I like this cd because the music is good and the lyrics are good, but some of the songs, well, they just don't work for me. Don't get me wrong, this is a great cd, just as my opinion, it's not the're best.

4 out of 5 stars ONLY EP TO DATE FROM ROCK'S BEST BAND.......1999-04-04

This is an EP - shorter and more trendy than an LP, and as such I would not recommend it as a first purchase of GALACTIC COWBOYS music for your collection. You will get a different feel for their material than would be accurate for assessing the general content of their work. This is a MUST for a true GC fan if for no other reason than it contains the only available live tracks to date, "Idle Minds" & "9th of June" from the "Machine Fish" tour and 3 tunes not on any of their other albums including two covers, "I Want You" (Paul Stanley) and "Junior's Farm" (Paul & Linda McCartney). In keeping with the familiar humor we've come to enjoy from Monty Colvin and the boys, there's also a little unintelligeable song 'about my grandmother' that won't surprise a true GC fan. If you haven't already got an album by GALACTIC COWBOYS, I suggest "Machine Fish" or "At The End Of The Day" for a more mainstream flavor. - Brad Farh
