The short-lived classic-rock supergroup Blind Faith's sole album has aged remarkably well. In 1969, Blind Faith fused the psychedelic blues of Eric Clapton and the soulful vocals and keyboards of Steve Winwood with the polyrhythmic, Afrocentric leanings of drummer Ginger Baker. "Can't Find My Way Home" is one of the hippie era's most lyrically poignant, sonically subtle tunes. The record has a lot of surprises; "Presence of the Lord" is rousing and melancholy at the same time, while the way the bass and guitar double-team on the introductory melodic line to "Had to Cry Today" makes a hard-rock cliché fresh again. The 10-minute drum solo on "Do What You Like" is pretty good as 10-minute drum solos go. This 2000 reissue of the album omits the unreleased jams and mixes that fill the second disc of the deluxe reissue that appeared earlier in the year. --Mike McGonigal

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I am often asked to write or talk about various 60's and 70's rock and roll recordings.

Although it was devastating that Cream had broken up, Two-thirds of the band Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker surfaced along with Steve Winwood and Ric Grech in Blind Faith. Although there would only be one album it has left its mark as a must own for any fan of blues-rock and Clapton or Winwood.

Please make sure you are viewing the 2CD version with the original LP and the nine bonus tracks (Including 1 CD of all Jams).

The deluxe issue has such intense bonus material that it had to be extended to a two CD set. "Can't Find My Way Back Home" and "Presence Of The Lord" have so much soul and emotion it could give a heart to the Tin Man.

There isn't a bad moment from the opening note to the final bonus track. Although you'll feel like a kid in a candy store and want to experience a bit of this and that, listen to the first six tracks on CD 1 straight through. This will enable you to experience the music the way it was in 1969 and in the best quality. After you are able to digest the brilliance of the album if you have any energy left go for the bonus tracks. Some may have had the pleasure of hearing "Sleeping In The Ground" previously. When you get to the Jams it will reaffirm why Clapton's output from the Yardbirds through Derek & The Dominos was nothing short of Herculean.

It was a superband that had it all, and it is a delight to tool down the highway to these tunes. Each song on this "album" is a gem.

Justice is Blind, Faith is Kind................2007-05-07

After groveling in the hovels of dark cafes and zoos after midnight, I finally emerged to the meditative mountain for a quick, few, inspirational visionary episodes. What meditative mountain you ask? I am a Seer- of course I have one. Anyway-through the haze- I was able to see many things concerning this album. And seeing isn't always good when you're asked to take them on Blind Faith alone. Regardless- it certainly is more pleasant reviewing this than having my locks changed in my castle (yes, again!). It's amazing what fans will do. Oh well.
I have to be honest here, you have to look at this album in context if you are to get anywhere. Yes, yes, I love it too. But honestly, is there anyone out there that really, sincerely believes that this is the best they could do? I certainly don't. I think this was meant as a side project only for Clapton and Winwood, in between groups or group obligations. Why isn't it the best? You only have to look closely at what came after - Winwood's "John Barleycorn Must Die", and Eric's "Layla". Now THOSE are highpoints my people. Blind Faith has many pleasurable moments here - and wonderful musicianship. But nothing really lifts you more than three inches off the ground.
Which is not to say that there aren't superb gems. The subtle, quiet yearning of Winwood with great acoustic guitars on "Can't Find My Way Home". Listen to the insistent snaking along of the beat and Winwood's soulful plea at the end. Wonderful. Too bad everything was not like this.
"Had to Cry Today" has an interesting riff to recommend it- and it flys off and returns to us time and time again. But the song itself labors along and the best part is the lead guitar interplay between Winwood and Clapton. I will say this- at least those two have some idea of where all this is going. But Ginger Baker and Rick Grech, although both extremely talented, are overshadowed.
Ironically, one of the few songs that show any real life here, "Well All Right" was not written by any of the group members but was a Buddy Holly tune. And Winwood share's his piano gifts with us here. Nice jam at the end Steve!
"Presence of the Lord" is a Clapton tune and a lumbering (or is it slumbering?) one at that. And one has to wonder if this was before, during, or after his heroin addiction? I would hate to think the Lord had anything to do with that! In fairness, the thing that saves this song is the middle break when the Lord allows Clapton the freedom of a lead. As a Seer I know that we must be grateful for small miracles in our lives.
But all is not lost because we are on "The Sea of Joy". I rather like this one. It has some life and could have been included on a Traffic album like "Low Spark". However, that being said, Mr. Winwood does himself (and us) no favors by writing this in a bad key for himself. I've always liked the sound of his vocals, but his voice is straining here to hit the notes. I am advising honey and no speaking for three days to get up to snuff. That Metamorpho-always willing to help.
We conclude with "Do What You Like", a long, floating, noodling of a song that gives everyone the spotlight leading up to the famed Ginger Baker drum solo. Well, after all, he wrote the song. I sort of like this jam though. They finally let Baker and Grech shine just when I was beginning to get worried....about the time the doorknob broke.
In conclusion, is this the best thing these musicians have ever done? The answer is no. Are there some fine and plausible musical substance that would make this a worthy find? Definitely. Anything Clapton and Winwood get involved with is definitely worth a look see. But a super-group? Well........almost.
Now it is time to get down from this mountain and get some insect spray. All I need are mosquito bites on my face. After all, I have a public to think of!

Keep the Faith alive.......2007-02-06

Blind Faith (1969) Blind Faith's first and only studio album.

After Clapton had failed to recruit ex-Traffic mastermind Steve Winwood into Cream quick enough, the power trio split. However, all was not lost. What formed from the ashes was a tiny taste of what Cream with the addition of Winwood might have sounded like. Along with God guitarist Clapton and keyboard monster Winwood was ex-Cream dummer Ginger Baker and ex-Family bassist Rick Grech, who left Family mid-tour to join the group. The end product was one of the greatest classic rock/psychedelic/jazz/folk albums ever released. It's a shame that this is all we get.

The album starts off with Winwood's "Had to Cry Today", a beautiful, wistful song headed by a killer guitar riff. This epic only leads into what is probably the group's best known song, another Winwood classic called "Can't Find My Way Home". The acoustic guitar along with Winwood's soft, haunting vocals make this one of the greatest classic rock songs ever conceived. It then moves on to a wondeful cover of "Well All Right", where the band really lets loose and does some neat jamming.

Next is my personal favorite from the album, and one of my all-time favorite songs; Clapton's "Presence of the Lord". The organ and bass line here are so amazing, and Clapton's fuzziness on the guitar only sucks you into an eternal dreamworld. This is an absolutely gorgeous song, and it's amazing that it's not more popular than it was. Next is another Winwood song, "Sea of Joy". This one also has a very memorable riff, and the chorus to the song is nothing short of great. The album rounds out with Ginger Baker's epic "Do What You Like", where he shows the world why he is one of its greatest drummers. Clapton and Grech also enjoy interesting solos on this song, too.

Overall, this band could have gone on to do amazing things, but while on tour, Clapton became more and more obsessed with the sounds of the Band and Delaney and Bonnie. He split at the end of the tour and went on to bigger and better things, while Winwood and Grech would join Baker in his "Air Force" (another incredible album), and later, for Winwood, a reunion with Traffic. If you are a fan of classic rock, of Cream, of Clapton or Winwood, do NOT miss out on this. It's a very moving and spiritual journey, and one of the finest recordings from that era.

Third Eye Blind's self-titled 1997 debut is one of my favorite 90s rock albums. This album is one of the finest from the post-grunge period, and put into motion the group that would win over thousands with their well-produced, inspired rock. "Third Eye Blind" is full of very well-written, catchy pop-rock songs, but it's far more artistic than your average mainstream rock. Stephan Jenkins' lyrics are passionate and emotional, expressing despair and depression over failed relationships and problems of life. His vocal delivery ranges from a soft singing to an almost rapped fast pace, and his signature shrieky falsetto is always welcome. The album as a tone has a fairly dark and depressed mood to it, but the upbeat songs emit a much more joyful air. Behind Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar's musicianship, the songs are built around catchy guitar riffs that match the vocals perfectly. The songs are extremely catchy and memorable, and the emotion in these songs makes them inspiring and appealing.

My only complaints I would ever have about this album are just towards the end of the tracklist. A few of the slower, sparser, and less memorable songs are grouped towards the end, and a few of these are skippable and similar. I'm not sure about this tan cover that Amazon displays, the only one I've ever been familiar with is the red one.

The tracklist begins with the fast and sad "Losing a Whole Year," about a lost love. The furious guitars are loud and thumping, but Jenkins' vocals and lyrics are soft. "Narcolepsy" is a nice, almost relaxing tune until the end. The #1 single, the unforgettable "Semi-Charmed Life," is without a doubt one of the very best songs of the 90s, a perfectly constructed pop tune. The memorable hook and almost rapped verses, to the bridge and guitar break, this song is a catchy, timeless classic. Just as good is its perfect follower, "Jumper." The spinning, almost acoustic feeling song is an inspiring conversation to a suicidal friend, and the hook and verses are enough to make anyone sing along. "Graduate" is a pounding, heavy song that I like. The slower "How's It Going to Be" was another successful single, a well-written tune. "Thanks a Lot" and "Burning Man" are both very well-produced, they're upbeat and catchy rock songs with meaningful lyrics. "Good for You" and "London" are also enjoyable, exhibiting raw emotion. "I Want You" is one of my favorites, musically laidback and lyrically yearning. The album closes with three slow yet very fulfilling songs, "The Background," "Motorcycle Drive By," and "God of Wine."

"Third Eye Blind" is one of the finest rock albums of the nineties, and it has something that will appeal to everybody. From the catchy, well-written pop tunes, to the emotional lyrics or the musical artistry, there's a lot to love about this debut. I also highly recommend its follow up, 1999's Blue.

there is something magical about Third Eye Blind, regardless of what most of their songs are referring to, they seep into your psyche and sit there awhile, just playing with your senses. 5 or ten years after the fact, I can still be driving on I-95, heading towards BeanTown at 8am with bumper to bumper traffic, and close my eyes and belt out "God Of Wine" or "Motorcycle Drive By" and I feel alive. I feel this album was made for me, and I feel infinite. I am glad that my favorite, most poetic songs from this album, hardly, if ever got radio play. It would have, in this reviewers opinion, taken the purity and eloquence away from the magic of what those songs are about if it were layed out to the masses and critics at that pathetic, sophmoric Spin magazine.

'The Background' is one of my favorite songs of all time, and 'God of Wine' is a song that should be legendary, like Hotel California. I am just so sorry I missed them on both their shows in this area. I have waited so long to see them live.

Arguably, Third Eye Blind's debut self-titled album, can be layed on pace with Radiohead's "Ok Computer" and The Beatles "The White Album" as some of the finest music to grace our ears. I thank them.

One of my favorite musical experiences of my life; sheer brilliant.

Terrific record. Classic rock for the next generation........2007-06-20

This record seems to be both extremely underated and extremely overrated. For me, I like all the songs on the record. No, they are not really innovative or songs of musical genius like Bob Dylan or MIles Davis. BUt they are very likable tunes and they have great energy, blue-eyed brash innocence, and a big heart, and that's more than I can ever say about any Dylan or Miles Davis tune I've ever heard.

Poetic Evolution.......2007-06-13

This album is lyrically brilliant. I don't particularly like pop rock, but I think this album is amazing. The lyric's structure closely resembles poetry, in which the listener can discern their own intial meanings to the lyrics and then allow those meanings to evolve with each listen. There are not too many albums that deal with such dark psychological issues with this characteristic.

A Timeless Delight...........2007-04-28

My favorite pop-rock/alternative album of the 90's. Every single song is so dam* good even the last hidden track...The album had at least 5 songs that were released on radio and ended up on top 10 charts...The funny thing is that the rest of the tracks that weren't released are the best tracks!!!

Is Tommy Castro a soul man in a blues rocker's body, or vice versa? He doesn't seem to care--and neither should we, when the results of that dichotomy are as frisky and enjoyable as Painkiller. A better-than-average singer and guitarist, Castro has been hampered in the past by inconsistent material and the sense that he hadn't quite come to grips with his love of the Stax and Chess catalogs. Bringing in other songwriters has vastly improved the material on this collection, with eight original tunes co-written by Castro and veteran tunesmiths such as Gary Nicholson, Stephen Bruton, Bonnie Hayes, and Jimmy Hall. Castro sounds loose and comfortable hammering into riff-rockers such as "Love Don't Care" and Stones-styled material on the order of "I Roll When I Rock," both augmented by a horn section that adds dollops of R&B to the proceedings. Coco Montoya duets and adds typically sizzling guitar on a rollicking cover of Albert Collins's "A Good Fool Is Hard to Find," and Angela Strehli ups the heat for a soul-drenched take on Freddie King's "If You Believe (In What You Do)." Castro shifts into Tyrone Davis mode on "It's That Time Again," credited as an original but almost a rewrite of Davis's signature "Can I Change My Mind." The Al Green/Hi sound of "Lonesome and Then Some" brings out the best in Castro's Delbert McClinton-inflected vocals, and burns when he tears into a taut lead-guitar line. Call him a soul-drenched blues rocker if you must, but on Painkiller Tommy Castro successfully finds the sweet spot between his various influences and balances them like the pro he is. --Hal Horowitz

Tommy's best. Alot of Delbert influence in his music on this CD. Great blend of horns and blues guitar. I've enjoyed Tommy's music for some time now, stumbling across a performance of his when I was in San Diego in 1998. His music has improved and this CD has provided the goods for me to turn more ears here on the east coast. Not a bad song on this CD.

Having listened to Tommy Castro for the last 5 or 6 years, this is a truly great release from a fine electric blues and jazz guiter player.
I was impressed from the first track thru the entire CD. A must buy for all electric blues & jazz fans everywhere.

Painkiller - Tommy Castro.......2007-03-30

I had a chance to see Tommy perform at a local venue, he played a couple of songs from this album that sounded great. At the time the cd was not available in stores, just his website, which was autographed if bought from the website. Anyhow, after hearing the couple of songs live, I bought the cd and loved it. I'm glad to see the cd is doing well.

Best TC to date.......2007-03-22

I really think Tommy Castro has arrived as one of the best on the Blues scene today. Pain Killer is clearly his best effort to date. Most notably one should notice the work of Keith Crossan And Tom Poole (The Healthy Horns).

Great Collection..........2007-07-11

If you are a devote 3EB fan, you probably have all the songs in the collection - all three CDs & some demos - therefore, this CD is not for you! The liner notes are the biggest extra on the CD, but are not worth much as an extra...

On the other hand, for those who like the band but hadn't followed too closely, or do not know where to download the songs unavailable on the group's CDs - this is a perfect collection & very recommended.

Finally a compilation.......2007-06-27

If you're like me and always liked one or two songs from every CD this band has released, then you will be pleased to see this compilation exists. All the hits, all in one place, all for a fairly cheap price. Gotta love it.

Did not disappoint........2007-05-12

As a loyal fan from the beginning, I am proud to say that this collection of songs did not disappoint. However, I would have liked the track "Faster" from their 3rd album to be included. Their music is phenonmenal and this collection is only a glimpse of who they are. I would highly recommend getting all 3 albums.

Three hard-to-find tracks.......2007-03-22

There are exactly three reasons to own this album:

1. Tattoo of the Sun, previously only available with one of their singles. An excellent song that should have been on an album years ago.
2. Slow Motion, with the lyrics, which anyone in the US missed out on. This alone is worth the price. Along with Motorcycle Drive By (also on this album), Slow Motion is Third Eye Blind at their best.
3. My Time in Exile, which is said to be on the DVD release of Out of Vein. Also an excellent track.

Even if you own every other Third Eye Blind album, it's worth it to pick up this one for these songs alone.

Is anyone else surprised that there are 19 songs on this hits collection? If you can name 6 songs or more that were released during Third Eye Blind's fifteen minutes of fame, then you can't go wrong picking this up. I must admit that the songs I'm not familiar with are just as good as their commercial stuff. Although, if you're among the many that can't name 6 songs, you can hear "Semi-Charmed Life" on the radio everyday.

Fujiya & Miyagi are not Japanese nor are they a duo, but are in fact a trio of rather cheeky Brits. Keeping with the multi-cultural theme, they also love Neu!-style Krautrock, with its metronome rhythms and cerebral melodies. This second release after 2003's Electro Karaoke in the Negative Style is filled with sly statements and cute jokes about commodity and materialism--Transparent Things is a particularly apt title--but more than anything else it's a goofball lark. With the music-nerd navel-gazing of LCD Soundsystem, but also the sonic aesthetic of Stereolab, it can be enjoyed regardless of whether you want to get geeky. Some might say it's best enjoyed that way, as some of the record's most enjoyable moments, like the skittery last few minutes of "Photocopier" or the instrumental "Cassettesingle" aren't about words at all. At times it's downright danceable, with tracks like "Reeboks in Heaven" exhibiting an abstract, electro grooviness. Their devotion to quirk ends up being a little too cute occasionally (like when they use the band name as a chant in "Ankle Injuries"), but their energy is so harmless it's easy to overlook it. Don't worry about getting all the jokes; Fujiya & Miyagi would likely be happier if you turned your brain off and cut a rug instead. --Matthew Cooke

This album rules except for the song "Sucker punch" everything else is awesome...I really dig kraut rock and dance music, so when you put it together I really really dig it!

my answer is yes, I'll even wear the high-tops to kick it old school... my only condition: I gotta have this album playing in the background. it is absolutely catchy from start to finish (it reminds me a little of the Hot Chip album, Junior Boys' recent material, even some AIR back when Moon Safari was the shananigan... it still is actually), but they got their own krautrock/electronic thing going without taking themselves too seriously... just listen to the lyrics for crying out loud... they're hilarious. the "collarbone" track is outstanding, as well as "photocopier", "in one ear..." and the aforementioned "reeboks in heaven"... they are perfect to kick it back before going out, or even for the after-party... it will get everyone in a terrific, funky, let's-get-up and dance mood... highly recommended.

Entertaining album from start to finish. Buy It Now!.......2007-03-09

Leave it to a couple of UK studs to come up with a sound this brilliant. 'Hilarious Euro-pop with slick bass lines' is a fairly accurate description but doesn't do this album justice. The recording is crystal and the beats are easy and fun to follow. "Got to get a new pair of shoes, to kick it with her, not kick it with you" is just one example of F&M's delightfully amusing choruses. This is perfect conversation-piece music that will extinguish any drama or awkward silence at your next gathering. Your guests will thank you, and your mp3 player will appreciate your good taste.

For bands like the Sundays that put out albums very infrequently (only three in eight years), passing fads cannot exert undue influence; consistency is the key to staying power. Thank God the Sundays never went grunge. On this, their second album, the forthright and spare power of their debut has ceded somewhat to lusher production values and more complex arrangements, but the good news is that the rest of the band's presence has caught up with Harriet Wheeler's crystalline voice. Together they produce such marvels as "Goodbye," "Love," and an off-kilter version of the Stones' "Wild Horses." The Sundays here sound like a more integrated musical unit, and for that reason Blind is the rare sophomore release that not only holds its own against the first album, but actually outperforms it. --Alan E. For Buffy & Angel Fans.......2005-11-12

I love this CD and recommend all the songs on it, but I confess I bought it for their cover of the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses classic, which I first heard during the episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer where Angel comes to Buffy's prom for a heartbreaking slow dance and good-bye to his true love. In fact I found the lead singer's voice on this song so beatiful and clear and full of longing that I had to call a radio station to identify the singer, as I had never heard of The Sundays before.

Sundays' Best.......2005-06-26

This is The Sundays at their best, the full realization of their sound. "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic" is essential with it's "The Smiths with female vocals" sound, but "Blind" is pure Sundays. The consistently haunting atmosphere of this record makes "Blind" my personal favorite. "Blood On My Hands" says it all.

The Sundays albums in descending order (according to me):

1. "Blind"
2. "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic" (very close second)
3. "Static & Silence" (as much as I love this album, it's not as consistent or "magical" as the first two.)

I highly recommend all three.

Pretty good........2005-02-21

I'm not exactly a huge Sundays fan, but this is a pretty good album. I initially bought it for their cover of "Wild Horses," but the rest of the CD is quality tunes. Great for mellowing out with after a rough day. Relaxing, but never boring.

Long known as the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, this venerable gospel institution has seen its ranks fluctuate in recent years. Rarely, however, have the soul-stirring harmonies of the group, recording here as a quartet, benefited from such stellar support. They just have amazing voices. There are two Tom Waits songs on the album; and while i'm a big fan of Tom Waits, sometimes it's hard to hear how to sing his songs yourself. The Boys bring out their musicality in a way that's accessible for everyone - i can sing those songs in the shower now! ;) Great album!

I was not really familiar with the Blind Boys until I purchased this CD. I love their old-time blue-zy style and plan to purchase more of their music.

The Blind Boys reach out here to broaden their base beyond the traditional gospel fan. They start out by covering material by the Rolling Stones (I just wanna see his face from Exile On Main Street), Tom Waits, and others. They add some mainstraem guest stars to further broaden the appeal. There's blues, rock, soul here all blended together expertly.
This won a number of awards and deservedly so. I'm sure there's many people who didn't realize that they can enjoy gospel music until they listened to this.

You'll fall in love with the Blind Boys after listening to this CD.......2005-09-23

If you weren't already in love with the Blind Boys, you will fall in love with them and their music after listening to this CD.

Prior to hearing this, I wasn't a gospel fan, and wasn't really sure what my reaction would be. Since I bought this CD I have purchased about five others by the Blind Boys - and while they're all superb, this one is my favorite.

It's hard to pick favorite songs on this CD, although, "Run on for a Long Time," "Soldier," and "The Last Time" are a few. You'll find a lot of variety here, from uptempo tracks to more solemn and slow songs.

You might also recognize "Way Down in the Hole" as the opening track from HBO's series "The Wire."

Having toured with Elvis Costello, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Peter Gabriel, the Blind Boys have earned their place in mainstream music culture, but maintain the traditional sounds that appeal to audiences around the world.

I saw the Blind Boys of Alabama for the first time on Austin City Limits, singing "Amazing Grace." I remember being completely drawn in at the harmony and the rendition, as it sounded almost like a chain gang. The beginning cadence sounds a bit like "The House of the Rising Sun," but you forget about that once the vocals start in. The rest of the CD is equally moving. I've read other reviews claiming goosebumbs, tears, etc. -- my sentiments exactly. Bravo.

I heard a new song of their's (equally fabulous) on the radio a few days ago but suppose the CD has not yet been released -- I'm waiting!

Jam Nation hero Ben Harper tones down his lap-slide guitar flash in favor of the holy spirit for this blend of originals and gospel classics, his first full-length album with the historic singing group. They've worked together before, on the Blind Boys' excellent Higher Ground and Spirit of the Century, but here the pairing that Harper has termed "a spiritual soul movement" sounds like an outright tent-revival mission. His fevered wah-wah strutting and sweet high voice take their places in the chorus alongside the raw-throated howl of Blind Boys leader Clarence Fountain and his fellow bass George Scott, who plead for salvation like powerful old lions on "Take My Hand." The group's alto, Jimmy Carter, sails over the funky, hiccupping blues beat put down by Harper's Innocent Criminals on the classic "Satisfied Mind." Ben Harper, the Road Warrior in the flesh lays down some truly spiritual and inspirational music with some of the greats of the Gospel world. All it took was one listen and I was hooked. Easily the most accessible and easy to listen to of Harper's work. Fans of gospel, country, alternative rock and blues-rock alike should definitely pick this one up. The vocals, especially on "Wicked Man" might even conjure some memories of Little Feat for some. Great album. The world needs more like this one.

What a combo! Ben Harper, road warrior, jam master and granola hero, teams up with the ageless grammy award winning gospel warriors.....this has the potential for 2 outcomes: 1) something that just flat out won't work or 2)something very very special.

Well.....it is option #2!!!!

With old southern standards and brand new originals, the crew reaches deep into gritty southern soul roots and captures the ghosts of the past. You can feel the emotion and passion in each song. You almost think you are in a tiny church somewhere smack in the middle of the Mississippi delta!

I recommend this for any lovers of gospel music. I also do the same for any lovers of classic sould r&b.

Funky Gospel.......2005-09-02

Bought this CD because I heard the track "Satisfied Mind" on public radio and just had to have it!! This CD is well worth the money just for this track alone. The rest of the CD is great if you are into the origins of funk. Some of the tracks get a little too Gospel for my taste. There are some sweet guitar solos and truly excellent blues riffs scattered throughout the more upbeat tracks. I would definitely suggest buying this CD after buying it I am very intersted in checking out more Ben Harper and more Blind Boys of Alabama fare.

This is my first time picking up a Ben Harper record, as well as a Blind Boys of Alabama record. To me, Ben Harper has always been talented, and the Blind Boys of Alabama have always been known for making great songs (STUPID videos, but great songs). But now Ben's funky, light rock and the Blind Boys' spiritual flavor joined forces on There Will Be a Light, and as another reviewer put it, this marriage works.

The traditional "Mother Pray" is definitely a highlight, as well as their cover of Bob Dylan's "Well, Well, Well". Other songs not to be missed are "Church On Time", the title track, and "Picture of Jesus". And when the religious aspect is rather oblique, it's still impressive, as evidenced by the single "Wicked Man".

Even the instrumental track "11th Commandment" is good. Basically, There Will Be a Light is an album that should satisfy contemporary fans and gospel fans alike, and while you might not want to pay full price for a 38-minute album (although somehow it seems longer than that), you'll definitely get your money's worth if you pick it up.

One of my Top Ten CDs.........2007-06-26

After sort of passing off Blind Melon when they came out (only played songs were sort of commercial & Shannon Hoon's later stage work was a bit scary), I came to love this & Soup. These, some Alice in Chains, A Perfect Circle & Days of the New are probably my most played CDs.

Getting old now, but if you didn't give this a chance you should.

I bought it when it came out. I bought 'Soup' when that came out, and then I bought 'Nico' when that arrived, as well.

Well, it's 15 years later, and now I can't listen to this album. I can't listen to Nico, and while I can occasionally get up to put on Soup, this one gathers the most dust. To call it a solid album is an understatement. To come to terms with it is impossible. I've worn it out and repurchased it probably five times? I even stole my sister's copy.

The songwriting and playing is brutally personal and honest to the point where it frightens me. I get emotionally upset when people bring up the band, the singer, or the songs.

Capitol pressed so many copies that you can buy it here for $.99, and if you ever thought Seward got a good deal...

Nothing special here aside from the song "No Rain", but it's still a pretty good album. Decent rock form a decent band.

Once I got passed "No Rain" it's actually good.......2006-09-10

I couldn't get passed "No Rain" when I owned this album. You see "No Rain" was the first song I heard off this album, and it's dreary sounding even on a sunny day. I heard when shooting the video that Shannon Hoon the group's lead vocalist hated the little girl who's in the video. Well she's probably now 24, and had Hoon not killed himself in 1995 he may very well be masturbating over her right now. The song just doesn't belong here as the rest of these songs are more rocked out than the song "No Rain". I found "Holyman", "Time", and "Dear Old Dad", and let's not forget "Soak Up Sun" as the cream of the crop. I was pleasantly surprised that this was actually better than originally expected. I bought this in May of 1994, but never played it all the way through as I was going through so many changes at this time, and I just put it off to the side, and eventually got rid of the album. I know that "No Rain" was still a thorn in my side, so I will put this to rest now.

ESCAAAPE.....ESCAAAPE..........2006-08-23

This is an awesome debut album. It had been a few since I had put this one on, and it all came pouring back, just beautiful. Blnd Melon in my opinion has always been overlooked as just some obscure jam band,or a one hitter. But this band is so much more,and this debut release shows what a group of talented musicians these guys were. This band had such unique sound for it's time. Sure you could drag out all the infuence's here and there, but you would lose what is truly there. Songs like "Tones Of Home","Change", and "No Rain" are inviting. While "I Wonder",and "Holyman" ring out like a folksy lullaby. This soundscape of blues/folk/rock is truly inspirational,and when it sink's in leaves an impression. Check out School House Rock, Woodstock 94',Live Like A Porcupine, and Enconium if you can't find enough B.M. Blind Melon fans will always be Blind Melon fans.

Third Eye Blind's second album will go a long way in helping the San Francisco-based band to shed their corporate-rock label. Less grandiose and obvious than their 1997 debut, the elegantly flawed Blue crackles with energy and dark humor, but doesn't wade in the same pools of gloom and despair as its self-titled predecessor. Frontman Stephan Jenkins has exchanged his intricate stream-of-consciousness musings for more streamlined soulful wordplay. The assertive, inventive guitars recall such big bruisers of yesteryear as Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but without the heavy-handedness. "Never Let You Go," the album's standout, is as catchy as Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl," but with a raw edge and a snarling Jaggeresque rap by Jenkins. Third Eye Blind's sophomore effort "Blue" was one of my favorites when it was released in 1999, and it's still an album I listen to fairly regularly even today. Following the multiplatinum smash that was their 1997 debut Third Eye Blind, which had multiple hit singles and established a huge following, "Blue" finds the band in a less depressed mood and rocking a little harder. Something I always admired about 3EB was how they were able to balance commercial success with artistry. Each album had a handful of bona fide pop radio monsters, but they fit into the albums' progressions of emotions and ideas. Even while being a very mainstream and accessible band, they remained artistic and their sometimes wild and emotional lyrics were not molded by the Top 40. In relation to Third Eye Blind, which was often more somber and sad, "Blue" has more upbeat, electric guitar-heavy tunes. The songwriting is as equally brilliant, and the combination of great songwriting, production, sensibility, and pure musical talent again establishes 3EB as one of post-grunge rock's greatest bands in my mind. Stephan Jenkins spends more time shrieking in his signature falsetto, and Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar are given more room to shine. Overall, "Blue" is a absolutely fun, emotional, and artistic gem of late-90s rock.

I only have a few minor complaints about the album. I sometimes tend to skip over a few of the late tracks on the disc, the slower and less memorable ones, but a closer listen actually finds these songs quite compelling. As other reviewers have noted, shoppers should beware of an indistinguishable "edited" version, which cuts the lyrically disturbing "Slow Motion" from the tracklist and includes an instrumental version as the last song. Both versions look identical, so if shopping for this in a store, consumers should closely review the tracklists.

The album begins with the short "Anything," a fast, hard-rocking, dramatic ballad and a great start to the album. "Wounded" continues lyrically in the same vein, a sad song of lost love, but musically is much slower and sad. One of my favorites follows, the ingenious "Ten Days Late," an immediately catchy guitar jam which gives way to a bridge with a full choir break. The first single "Never Let You Go" is an absolute classic, a completely perfect pop song. From the inescapable guitar riffs to the clever lyrics, bridge, and "rap" that finish the song, this song should be remembered as one of the greatest of the late 90s. "Deep Inside of You" was the second single. I find this song similar to "How's It Going to Be" from their debut. It's an effective slow jam, with a more acoustic feel. Jenkins' performance is gripping, and the final push at the end is memorable. The pounding "1000 Julys" precedes one of the very best songs here, "An Ode to Maybe." The confused verses are nearly a backdrop to the awesome arrangement, instantly catchy. "The Red Summer Sun" is a very unique and likable cut, and the fast rock 'n roll of "Camoflage" sets it apart. "Farther" is a song that's grown on me over the years, the simple production is nice. The aforementioned "Slow Motion" is one of their most radical works, a must-hear. The midtempo "Darkness" closes the album along with maybe my favorite song, "Darwin." The electronic instrumentals make a fun sound, and the crazy verses give into an awesome hook. I love the acoustic riff at the beginning and end too.

While it didn't create quite as many waves as its predecessor, I think "Blue" is just about every bit as enjoyable as their groundbreaking debut was. What's sad is that it seems like, from a commercial standpoint, "Blue" was the peak for 3EB. Hopefully, a new album will surface as rumored and more great music will come our way. Until then, definitely pick up "Blue" if you haven't already.

This cd goes down as one of the most under-rated rock records of the last 15 years. You will be humming these songs all day. Great production values too. Get this. You will love it. Wounded is an unbelievable rock song. Get it for that alone.
