Elly Ameling has a divine voice.
This is recording of some of Schubert's most familiar lieder.

If you are a fan of the Schubert songs you must own this recording. Elly Ameling is widely acclaimed as the premiere contemporary performer of these beautiful and timeless pieces. Her intimate knowledge of and love for these equisite songs comes through in her warm pure lyric soprano. Truly my favorite recording in my collection.

This is surely one of the most beautiful CDs I own. Ameling imbues the music with such emotion, she easily takes the listener with her any place she wants to go. Unlike some other lieder CDs I have, the songs here are easy to connect to: from the very first listen I knew I was in for something special. If you derive even the slightest pleasure from the human voice, you must get this CD!

I can't claim to be a trained critic, but these are surely some of the most beautiful songs ever written, and Ameling's performance seems worthy of them. Highly expressive without excess, her voice seems perfectly to capture everything from the gay to the pathetic.

    This highly varied and interesting program includes four songs which Schubert set in their original Italian, along with one of his most famous and most popular vocal works, The Shepherd on the Rock, with its lovely piano and clarinet accompaniment. (Actually, it ought to be "cliff" and not "rock," which makes the title sound like a cocktail rather than a typical specimen of German Romantic poetry, but "rock" is the commonly accepted translation.) The late Arleen Augér sings this music with all of her customary ease and finesse, and Graham Johnson's accompaniments are just right. --David Hurwitz

              In Extremo must be the greatest of the folf/metal bands, each release exceeding the last. This single is no let down, closer to Verehrt Und Angespien than previous releases. It seems as if they are not yet satisfied with their "sound", and I look forward to an interesting evolution. Pity about the remixes, though...
