2 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZZZZZ.......2005-03-12

I've tried a few times but I just can't make it thru this CD. While I'm listening to it I find myself saying out loud "This is BORING". The story is dull, the music is dull. I got really tired of hearing "where is the love to shelter me?" The drummer sounds like he's beating on garbage cans half the time. I didn't care for his singing either, it was too whiny. I didn't think there was even 1 song I'd ever care to hear again. I can't see me ever putting this CD on again. However, a couple of other people really liked it as you can see from their reviews. I think the only people this might appeal to are really young people who haven't experienced much and think this junk is meaningful. There are HUNDREDS of MUCH better CDs than this dog.

5 out of 5 stars essential WASP.......2003-12-09

This is the greatest album by WASP... anyone really familiar with their history knows this. Personal, deep, beautiful, heartwrenching, melodic, catchy, rocking, heavy... TIMELESS. What else can I say? Chances are, when you listen to this album, you just might see a bit of your own personality in it -- I know I did. And, hey, isn't that what makes music great in the first place?

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST WASP ALBUM.......1999-12-16

This one goes in my TOP 5 top-to-bottom all-time favorite albums along with: Judas Priest-Screaming For Vengeance, Iron Maiden-Somewhere In Time, Pretty Maids-Future World, Def Leppard-High'n'Dry. I own well over 1000 cds, so these 5 must be special.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of rock!.......1999-09-26

The Crimson Idol is special in more than just the obvious sence as the songs have been written so that the listener is able to relate to them in some way, Blackie has written them from different perspectives so that everyone's experiance of 'The Crimson Idol' is unique. That truely takes a certain amount of genius!

5 out of 5 stars What a masterpiece!!!.......1999-09-16

This album shows the true musical genius that is Blackie Lawless. If you are into Hard Rock/Metal music, YOU MUST OWN THIS CD!!!....This thing is wild and beautiful at the same time...It sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. ***** isn't enough to rate it....GET IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars What a concept album should be!.......2007-05-30

When people think of conceptual albums, they tend to be slightly turned off by the idea. Only certain bands have been able to pull them off in the past (Pink Floyd, The Beatles, etc) but in the confines of heavy metal, it is a risk few are willing to take.

Enter Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. With an album originally sought to be a solo effort by Lawless, "The Crimson Idol" has quickly become perhaps the finest W.A.S.P. recording to ever grace the metal world! The album itself tells the story of a man named Jonathan, who's main goal in life is to become a rock star and will stop at nothing to accomplish this goal. In the end, the fame and fortune prove to be too much, but the album leaves the future of Jonathon up to what the listener wants to believe. It is an album that provides not only a great narrative, but has the musical prowess to back it up!

    1. The Titanic Oveture - A heavy instrumental to begin the album that really fuses everything together that the listener can expect throughout the course of the album. Well done track that kind of makes you wish it was developed into its own song. 4/5

    2. The Invisible Boy - The first official "song" on the album, and it is just pure rock 'n roll! Heavy and un-relenting as Blackie pours every emotion into it lyrically. A song that is hauntingly dark, yet inspires the listener to join Jonathon on his journey and hope he succeeds. 5/5

    3. Arena of Pleasure - Continuing with the heavy theme, this song focuses on Jonathon and his wishes to be a successful rock star! This song, it feels, was more focused on telling the story and less on getting the music to correspond with it. Good song, but may take awhile to fully appreciate with the rest of the album. 4/5

    4. Chainsaw Charlie (Murders In The New Morgue) - Perhaps the best track on the album lyrically and instrumentaly. This is a song that is just pure raw emotion all the way through. Telling the story of how corrupt and political the music business really is, "Charlie" is the producer out to screw his clients at any cost to get more money. A very solid track that can even shine without the rest of the album to support it. 5/5

    5. The Gypsy Meets The Boy - Listeners may recognize the riff from an earlier work if they own "The Headless Children." It has been re-expanded and revamped to fit beautifully into the concept of this album. From what I have read too, it was actually based off a true real life encounter with Blackie himself. A song that is hauntingly dark, yet strangely peaceful as well. 4.5/5

    6. Doctor Rockter - This is my personel favorite track on the album. In the essence of "Chainsaw Charlie", this song returns to that heavy form. A song that just kicks both musically and lyrically. 5/5

    7. I Am One - I love the way this song was put together! The hooks in this song come into play a little later, and really is an essential part in the whole story-telling of the album. May take a listen or two in order to really stick, but is definetly an awesome song. 4.5/5

    8. The Idol - This is the song that really starts to put the entire album together. The story has really come into full-swing by now and the listener begins to feel sorry for what Jonathon has become. A fairly long track that brings the listener on a ride, in many ways completely separate from the rest of the album! 5/5

    9. Hold On To My Heart - Ah, the "ballad" that is required within every metal album! But you know what, this song was very essential and put together extremely well. This song brings the entire emotional aspect to the forefront and TRUELY displays what Jonathon is feeling. 4.5/5

    10. The Great MisConceptions of Me - This is the song! I mean this is The Song! The track that ties the whole thing together! From the beginning to the very end, nothing that the album touched upon, is left out here. It is almost as if this song brings the listener on a ride that recaps the whole album and then adds more near the end. What happens to Jonathon is really left for the listener to decide. A final track that I believe is a classic in and of itself; shows that all the work and dedication Blackie poured into the album, has finally acheived what it intended to.. pure perfection! 5/5

    11. The Story of Jonathon - This track is of Blackie telling the story of Jonathon. Whats written on the inside booklet, is what's said here. Nothing outstanding, but still something different than many might not have expected. 3.5/5

I won't cover the second disc, as the album itself is worth the buy. Once you own the album, you can appreciate the second disc as a nice bonus along with the already outstanding "Crimson Idol" and story of a man named Jonathon!

This album is a must-own for any fans of not just W.A.S.P. but of metal itself! This album is actually the album that inspired me to become a musician and write my own songs! Get it now, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Conceptual Album.......2006-07-05

Sticking strictly with the original album - The Crimson Idol is a "must have" for any hard rock/metal fan. Blackie made one of the 2 GREAT concept albums of this time, the other being Queensryches's Operation Mindcrime.
Yes, I will agree that the story may be somewhat "cheesy" - with the rock n roll cliches. HOWEVER, the songs themselves are great. The Invisible Boy, Chainsaw Charlie, Doctor Rockter, I Am One and Hold On To My Heart are definitely highlights.
This album is pure power. One thing of note is Stet Howland & Frankie Banali drumming their guts out.
    W.A.S.P./Blackie Lawless' best work.

5 out of 5 stars One of those albums that is only made once in a lifetime.......2005-06-27

this is truely a masterpiece of metal and rock, with beautiful acoustic work and lyrics that could churn anyone. this is truely a masterpiece, after 1 listen i would rank this CD in my top 10 of my 350 CD's, it is a masterpiece, fad followers, whimps and posers, steer clear..... BUT those who appreciate music at its finest... its VERY FINEST... BUY THIS CD.
    #
it is one of those records that 99.9% of artists and bands could never have a prayer of making... even great acts... this song is an epic journey through a life that opitimises youth to death,,, buy!!!!

THE PINNACLE OF METAL AND ROCK!, THE PINNACLE OF WASP

5 out of 5 stars A very good offering from Wasp!.......2005-05-11

It's a great cd no matter how you look at it. If you want a good story telling cd, get this one and skip the Neon God ones as they are basically the same as this?

The song writing here is very good and Mr. Lawless seemed to have found a formula that worked to perfection here. Chris Holmes is gone and that's good as his leads were always boring as hell. Bob Kulick is his replacement and he does a much better job on this cd of creating solo's that have some sort of meaning. Overall the tunes and story flow along very nicely.
Some say this is WASP's best and it may well be, but Headless Children, Inside the Electric Circus and Dying for the World are also very good cd's and recommended.

Wasp does a nice job covering When The Levee Breaks here as well, bravo!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Of Heavy Metal.......2004-03-05

This album has got to be one of my favorite heavy metal albums of all time. My favorite track is "Chainsaw Charlie". The album is full of awesome tracks, far too many to mention, but they all deserve to be heard! As an owner of this great album, i'm here to tell you that you should get it, if you don't have it already!Blackie Lawless certainly knew what he was doing when he recorded this killer album! Kudos to the heavy metal master!

    2 out of 5 stars I love W.A.S.P but.........2006-02-04

I am a true blue W.A.S.P fan, but this CD is just not worth it. I see what Blackie was trying to do here, but he just didn't pull it off. However, he did redeem himself years later with another epic CD titled The Neon God, which is excellent especially on tunes like ASYLUM #9, ME AND THE DEVIL, WHY AM I NOTHING? oh, that whole album rocks. Pass up The Crimson Idol...go buy THE NEON GOD, you can thank me later.

    5 out of 5 stars A class W.A.S.P. album!.......2005-04-09

W.A.S.P.'s The Crimson Idol, was their first album of the 90s. In all reality, The Crimson Idol is more or less a Blackie Lawless solo album, since none of the original members are on this album except for Lawless. The Crimson Idol is a concept album or a rock opera, about a singer named Jonathan. Each song is part of Jonathan's story. The Crimson Idol ranks among W.A.S.P. finest albums. This album is great showcase for the talents of Blackie Lawless. Chainsaw Charlie, and HOld on to My Heart are just a couple of the standouts on The Crimson Idol. If you can find The Crimson Idol, you should buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Best W.A.S.P. album yet.......2004-05-23

This is by far the most mature release from this band as they display awesome skills never displayed before on a W.A.S.P. album. Gone are the song talking about having a good time as Blackie Lawless tackles important aspects that can affect anybody. The Crimson Idol is a conceptual album that tells the story of a boy named Jonathan in which he is considered the black sheep of his family. In order to prove his father wrong he begins a quest for fame and fortune in the rock n' roll world only to find out that money isn't everything and in the end there are things more important that wealth. Now on the music, it reflects very well within the story. Blackie Lawless uses electric and acustic guitars in order to make an impact to the listener, it works! (at least for me). His voice has improved on this record as he show you a wide range of emotions: anger, happiness, sadness you named it this record has it. Also it should be noted the drummer: He's amazing as he uses different style from the military to the tribal like. This is how drums should sound on every record and not just metal. Every song is well constructed highlights being Invisible Boy, Chainsaw Charlie, I am One & The Idol.
The bottom line is that you should go and buy this record all the props given to this album by me and other people are well deserved.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow..............2004-05-17

Picture Pink Floyd's "The Wall", then mix in equal parts of black hopelessness, utter despair, and soul grabbing lyrics. Ouch....a true must have for any theme album fans.
