Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist Randy Rhoads was a technical genius on his instrument, but that's only half the story. Rhoads shaped the direction of Osbourne's first two post-Sabbath recordings, Diary of a Madman and Blizzard of Ozz, which still stand as his best solo studio albums. Rhoads also was capable of pulling the best out of Osbourne onstage, a notable accomplishment in itself. This live set was released five years after Rhoads's death in a bizarre plane accident, and it's still a striking reminder of what was lost. Osbourne and company run through the Blizzard album in its entirety, adding a few tunes from Diary, and the Sabbath classics "Iron Man," "Children of the Grave," and "Paranoid." The highlights are Rhoads's guitar freakout on "Suicide Solution" and studio outtakes of his solo acoustic showcase, "Dee." --Daniel Durchholz

Best ozzy album period.......2007-05-25
No doubt the best ozzy album. I usually hate live albums but oh man..
is this ever an exception. Its better than any studio recording! Clearly
Ozzy / Rhoades at their peak. I've worn out 4 or 5 copies of this cd over the years. Nuff said.
Randy Rhoads....'Nuff Said!.......2007-03-15
This "Tribute" cd to the late, great Randall "Randy" Rhoads is mostly compiled from a concert at Cleveland, Ohio on May 11, 1981. The other band members besides Messrs. Osbourne and Rhoads are drummer Tommy Aldrige (ex-Black Oak Arkansas & Pat Travers) and bassist Rudy Sarzo (Randy's former band-mate in Quiet Riot). Aldrige and Sarzo replaced Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley, who were both fired two days after recording the "Diary Of A Madman" album. Bob Daisley was highly influential in helping Ozzy with his solo career as he wrote the lyrics to most of the songs on Ozzy's first two albums ("Blizzard Of Oz" & "Diary Of A Madman").
Anyway, this live cd capturing the brilliance of guitarist Randy Rhoads, truly is a fantastic tribute as it shows a rare glimpse of the phenomenal playing and improvising of Randy. The concert begins with the background music of the most famous movement from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana cantata, "O Fortuna". Ozzy asks the energetic crowd, "Are you ready to rock-n-roll?" The crowd roars and Ozzy tells them, "You're beautiful!" As "O Fortuna" nears climax, Ozzy yells to the audience, "Rock-n-roll!" Randy then rips into the opening chords of "I Don't Know" and the energy hits the roof! Ozzy and Randy proceed to blaze through "Crazy Train", "Believer" and "Mr. Crowley". Each song delivered with the intensity of.......well, Randy Rhoads! Randy re-invents his solos on each tune, adding incredibly fast trills and progressions to the songs. You can tell that every fiber of his being was flowing into his guitar and coming forth as divine music. The live renditions of these classic songs allow us to hear/feel the thought process and infinite energy flowing from Randy, and they are also the definitive versions of each tune.
"Flying High Again" has Ozzy telling the raucous audience to "keep on smokin' them joints!" Randy then proceeds to put his stamp on this tune with guitar playing that is beyond words (in a good way). Alright now! This rendition blows away the album version! Randy takes over and delivers the goods! "Suicide Solution" is another song where Randy really cuts loose. Randy's guitar solo at the end of the tune was actually recorded at another show (Montreal, Canada, 7/28/81), and spliced onto the end of the track. Randy plays three Black Sabbath songs and proceeds to take each tune to another level previously thought unattainable. The final two numbers were recorded during Ozzy's UK "Blizzard" tour when the previously mentioned Daisley and Kerslake were still in the band.
The cd ends with Randy's studio takes of his instrumental number "Dee".
There is not much more to say other than if you are looking to hear one of the greatest guitarist at the peak of creativity, and if you enjoy soulful music (if you know what I mean), then you should by all means get this cd.
Randy died March 19, 1982, in Leesburg, Florida. A small plane crashed after "buzzing" Ozzy's tour bus three times, on the forth time, the plane's wing clipped the bus causing the plane to pinwheel into a mansion and burst into flames. The crash killed guitarist Randall Rhoads, 25, the pilot of the Beechcraft Bonanza - Andrew Aycock, 36 - and Rachel Youngblood, 58, the group's makeup artist and hairdresser. The plane's pilot was also the group's bus driver.
Randy may be physically gone but his spirit is eternal!
The lyrics to the final stanza of"O Fortuna" are as follows:
Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate strikes down the string man,
everybody weep with me!
Better than expected.......2007-02-16
I picked this up because my son wanted to learn the live version of Crazy Train that's on this disc. I'd heard parts of this set at a friend's house and thought the sonics were lousy. Maybe my friend's system was lousy? These are not pristeen recordings like the best studio sound, but the sound is pretty decent. And the playing is very good to excellent. It is a fitting tribute to Randy Rhodes. Rest in peace.
unbelievable!.......2007-02-06
this album truly is too good for words. the late, great randy rhoads puts on a guitar clinic in just about every song and of course the audience is going crazy. this is one of the better live albums i have heard...it will give you an "eargasm." the notes inside the album are interesting as well; there is a letter his mother, dee, writes to the fans about randy, where he was born and what his future plans was...actually its kinda sad. its too bad the good have to die young. the guy was only 26 when he died. grab this and give it a spin to hear a true guitar wizard work his magic in front of a live audience, i promise it will not dissappoint.
Ozzy sounds great live.......2007-01-28
The songs on here, especially Crazy Train, sound a lot better to me than on the studio albums. The audience is going nuts, and the guitars sound more raw and into it, which makes it that much better. If you haven't heard Crazy Train on this album, you haven't heard it. Ozzy even made a music video from this recording. All the songs sound good here, but others that stand out are Iron Man, and Steal Away The Night. You get a heck of a lot of good music for less than $20. This is the PERFECT album if you have someone that you are trying to ease into liking heavy metal. It was my first real metal album, and my brother's, too. Highly recommended.

Tasteful versions of a legend's work.......2001-02-12
It is great when a group of musicians get together to honor a legend. It is even better when this legend is an icon of a generation, Randy Rhoads.
Randy's classically-inspired compositions are loved by heavy metal fans around the world. Now his music is brought back to us by world-renowned guitarists, singers, and other musicians, fresh and updated while staying true to the original sound.
Of course, it must be said that the guitar work is lagging in certain spots. Which is understandable, for it is almost impossible to emulate a genius like Randy Rhoads. For example, I didn't like Jake E. Lee's performance on Crazy Train at all. There are good points to the soloing; such as Mr. Crowley by George Lynch, who performs this classic tastefully; or Revelation by Kyoji Yamamoto, which sounds like something Randy himself could have played at a live show; finally not to be discarded, Chris Impellitteri's mindless shredding on Over The Mountain definitely adds interesting flavor to the song.
On the last note, if you have ever thought that Randy Rhoads deserved a better sounding frontman than Ozzy, this album delivers just that, with vocal performances from some of the top singers in the genre.
Get this album, you won't be disappointed.
Finally A Genius Remembered.......2000-10-16
Finally the music commumity is remembering Randy Rhoads for his amazing playing and well structured songwriting. Let's start with the singers. Sebastian Bach(I Don't Know, Crazy Train, Believer) does an amazing job capturing the power of these songs. Joe Lynn Turner(Mr Crowley, Over The Mountain, and Diary)does his usual pro job. Rob Rock(Goodbye To Romance & S.A.T.O. does a great job(a singer to watch). Mark Slaughter Revelation-Mother Earth & Flying High Again)sing better than I've heard him sing in years. Now for the guitarists. Jake E. Lee(Crazy Train & Revelation) plays like I have never heard him play before. Roy Z(Goodbye) does a respectable job. George Lynch(Mr Crowley & Flying High Again)does a downright "Scary" job. Japan's own Kyoji Yamamoto(Revelation)does the closest impression to Rhoads I've ever heard. Chris Impellitteri(Over The Mountian)does a good job, a true Rhoads fan here. DimeBad Darrel(Believer) has the standout preformance here, so good it's frightening. Chet Thompson(S.A.T.O.) does an inspired job, an interesting side note, he took lessons from Rhaods as a teen in California. Thompson plays with a fire I haven't heard in years. Finally Wolf Hoffman(I Don't Know, Diary of A Madman)plays ok on I Don't Know, but plays with a passion of the early Accept albums on Diary. Now the backing band.Kane Roberts(guitars):Alice Cooper.Al Pitrelli(guitars):Megadeth Michael Cortellone(drums):drums. Mike Brignardello(bass):unknown. Bob Parr(keyboards):studio musician. Make a stellar band to pump up the energy on this cd. Michael Wagner handles the production duties here and does his usual tight sounding job. Although it has not been released in America. It is well worth the extra money if you are a true Randy Rhoads fan. Thanks for listening, Kelly D. Cordahl
