When Elliott Smith died late in 2003, he took with him one of the unique songwriting gifts of his generation: part folk grandeur, part punk fury, and virtually bottomless in eight short years of solo recordings. Thankfully for that generation, and many to come, he left behind two dozen songs that his Portland, Oregon, producer and pal Larry Crane has crafted into a retrospective celebration of Smith's contribution to music. Mostly house-recorded demos plucked from the fertile three years that followed his 1994 debut Roman Candle (including an early take of "Miss Misery"), there's an eminent clarity to these songs that makes them sound like they were recorded yesterday. A lone acoustic guitar is the general accompaniment to Smith's lamenting wail, his self-deprecating lyrics forever a contrast to the sheer beauty of the melodies. "What are you doing hanging out with me?" he asks in "Whatever (Folk Song in C)," his double-tracked harmonies mocking both Simon and Garfunkel. Along with fragile versions of "Angel in the Snow," "Looking over My Shoulder," and a cover of Big Star's "Thirteen," it's as eternal as anything Smith offered when he was with us, and, as one of several shining moments, makes you forget he ever left. --Scott Holter

Album Description

Disc One: 01. Angel In The Snow From the Jan/Feb 1995 sessions at Leslie Uppinghouse's home studio that yielded much of the S/T record. Elliott's mix appeared on a CD that came with Mike McGonigal's magazine, Yeti: Volume I.

02. Talking to Mary From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. This is Elliott's rough mix as the master tape is sadly missing.

03. High Times From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. An early working title was "Coma Kid". The "drums" are really just doubled snare (with the throw off loose) and ride cymbal.

04. New Monkey From sessions for Either/Or. The "bar" was certainly La Luna in Portland, with "the millions of fans ignoring the bands."

05. Looking Over My Shoulder From sessions for Either/Or. The title of this song is not certain.

06. Going Nowhere From sessions for Either/Or. Due to the limits of eight tracks you rarely get bass guitar on these sessions unless it is integral to the arrangement. One of the most haunting songs in this collection.

07. Riot Coming From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Notice the excellent melodic electric guitar part.

08. "All Cleaned Out" This song was tracked at Jackpot! Recording Studio in early 1997. The title is an assumption as there were no notes on or in the tape box.

09. First Timer Tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. With different lyrics this song has seen life as "Ghost Writer" or "From a Poisoned Well". Elliott recorded the guitars too loud to tape in this collection, hence the occasional "chunk" noise.

10. Go By From sessions for Either/Or. Recorded to 8-track by Elliott in 1996, but then bounced to 2" tape by Rob and Tom where they added overdubs. It was obviously a contender for Either/Or at some point. Early versions of the song were known as "Bye Bye" and "Two Timed".

11. Miss Misery (early version) This song was tracked at Jackpot! in early 1997. It was later recut with lyric changes at Jackpot! and used in the film, Good Will Hunting.

12. Thirteen This Big Star/Alex Chilton song featured often in Elliott's live sets and in the Lucky Three short film by Jem Cohen. This version was recorded by Rob Jones and Elliott Smith in Elliott's Basement in April 1996 and was broadcast June 1, 1996, on Rob's Locals Show on KWVA 88.1 Eugene, OR. This was a simple live take with acoustic guitar and vocals.

Disc Two: 01. Georgia, Georgia From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Even though it was older, it was an early contender for the Either/Or running order.

02. Whatever (Folk Song in C) Apparently from the September 1994 sessions at Tony's. Features JJ Gonson's vintage Domino guitar that Elliott favored. Also known under the working title "Hanging Out With Me".

03. Big Decision From the 1995 sessions at Leslie's. Elliott's mix appeared on the CD compilation, A Slice of Lemon.

04. Placeholder From sessions for Either/Or. Sung so softly, but really beautiful.

05. New Disaster From sessions for Either/Or. Vocals and music are from different takes. Vocals are from the reel that provided From a Basement on the Hill with "Last Hour", but the tape reel flange scraping sound (which you can hear on "Last Hour") was even more distracting on this song. Music was from a later instrumental take, with organ and drums but no vocals. This is the only instance on this record where we combined takes in this manner.

06. Seen How Things Are Hard This song was actually recorded on a 4-track cassette. Mixed by Tom and Rob for possible inclusion of Either/Or. Also known under the working title, "Sleigh Bells".

07. Fear City From sessions for Either/Or. Also known as "See My City Dead". Check out the cool melodic organ part and Elliott's grooving drum style.

08. Either/Or From sessions for the album Either/Or. Apparently the song title was appropriated for the album title but not the song. There's also a version of this song with alternate lyrics called "No More".

09. Pretty Mary K (other version) From sessions for Either/Or. This is a completely different song than the Figure 8 track, but seems to feature different words with a parallel theme. An early version was worked up as "Everything's Okay" - note the similar phonetics.

10. Almost Over From sessions for Either/Or. Some of his fastest guitar picking in this collection.

11. See You Later

12. Half Right These are two Heatmiser songs from their third album, Mic City Sons, performed solo in this collection. From the Rob Jones' Locals Show sessions, "See You Later" was released on the Air Check cassette on Rob's label, Jealous Butcher.

Technical Note: Except for the special case of "New Disaster", where independent instrumental and vocal takes were combined, all songs are presented as tracked by Elliott, and every effort was made to check stereo placement, track levels, editing ideas, arrangement ideas and the overall feel that were present in his rough (or released) mixes. In many cases remixing was simply an attempt to make the elements of the song slightly more legible, and in other cases to reduce the background tape hiss. In no way is this album simply a product of the studio in 2006 - it is a collection of songs, any of which could have easily been included on his albums of 1995 or 1997.

In my Alabama high school, our English teacher had us select writers to do a report on. She carefully went down the list announcing a name with a short one-line bio to quickly introduce the writer to the class. My hand shot up to claim Sylvia Plath when I learned she committed suicide in her thirties; I was morbidly intrigued. In preparation for that school report I remember sitting in the library with headphones on listening to a BBC recording Plath made of her poem "Lady Lazarus." I can still hear the tone in her voice when she announces: "I have done it again. One year in every ten I manage it.... And I a smiling woman. I am only thirty. And like the cat I have nine times to die.... The second time I meant To last it out and not come back at all.... Dying Is an art, like everything else. I do it exceptionally well. I do it so it feels like hell. I do it so it feels real. I guess you could say I've a call." At the time I couldn't help but read into every quiver as evidence that Plath knew she was going to take her own life shortly after writing and recording this poem.

I approach Elliott Smith's posthumous release New Moon with the same ears; with song titles like "Going Nowhere," "Whatever," "Almost Over" and "Big Decision," I thought I would hear something in the lyrics that would announce his early death in 2003 (which was first reported as a suicide, though the evidence is still inconclusive on whether or not the two stab wounds were self-inflicted). Epitaph Records released an album with some of his newer material in 2004, but in New Moon, Kill Rock Stars offers a 24-song double-CD with material he recorded between 1994 and 1997. The CDs offer more examples of his songwriting brilliance, using acoustic guitars and simple recordings that are the basis of his earlier work. I never really got into the overly produced stuff he put out after leaving Kill Rock Stars, so this CD offers a great look backwards at a sound that was so familiar to me in college. There are no big surprises on this album, but fans will enjoy these previously un-released tracks.

Elliott Smith was a musical genius no matter what his personal life or his untimely ending were about. He was like no other of our time---if you are a Smith fan, this collection will rock your world ten times over. Extraordinary!

Gone Too Soon.......2007-06-28

I love this collection. It's like two lost albums were found. Some of his most beautiful and haunting material. The world lost a brilliant songwriter when Elliott passed away. His death is as important to me as John Lennon's (if you knew me, you'd know that that means alot in my world); they both could have gone on to contribute so much more to the world. Maybe they're somewhere playing together right now. That would be cool.

I lived in Portland Oregon in the mid 1990's and some of my best memories are the Elliot Smith shows i saw in quaint local bars and clubs, up close and personal, just Elliot and his guitar. I always loved him with his band as well, but to me, the true artist in Elliot Smith always came shining through in his solo shows, when his fantastic songwriting was front and center.

If you are the kind of person who owns every Elliot Smith CD, and considers the Kill Rock Stars records to be his best, then New Moon is a must have. There is no need for me to go through track by track to describe the beauty of this album. The care that went into this release by the people who put it together deserves five stars in itself.

Listening to New Moon made me realize how great Elliot Smith was and how much i miss hearing him and seeing him create new music.

Essential for Elliott fans!!!.......2007-06-27

It totally astounded me. I had no expectations, but would not have been surprised if these tracks were left off Elliott's records because they were somehow sub-standard. They are not. Either/Or could have been a perfect double CD with the inclusion of these tracks. If you are an Elliott fan, you will be exstatic about these archival gems.

While not as timeless as Ride the Lightning or Master Puppets, Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is still a fine piece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre. Fusing the rapid-fire attack of bands like Motorhead with a guitar style reminiscent of such British heavy metal bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Metallica essentially created a new kind of metal. Several of the songs from this 1983 album have since become classics, including "Seek & Destroy", "The Four Horsemen", and "Jump in the Fire". The songwriting isn't as sophisticated as on Metallica's later releases; still, it's a great listen, and essential for any heavy metal fan. --Genevieve Williams

Very Underrated Album.......2007-06-15

Though not quite as great as RTL or MOP, Kill 'Em All is still a thrash masterpiece. Maybe the vocals aren't as fresh, or the lyrics as mature, but this album will amaze you. Highlights include "The Four Horsemen," "Motorbreath," the amazing "Pulling Teeth," and "Seek and Destroy."

Essential Metallica.......2007-05-24

If you like Thrash Metal, you need this album. No metal collection is complete without Metallica, and this is a great representation of the band's core vibe before they changed their sound. When I first got this album over a decade ago, I put it aside and liked other Metallica albums much better, like Ride the Lightning,...And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, and the black album. KEA was a little too rough around the edges for me then. But I have seen the light. This album is back in the rotation for me. If you like Heavy Metal, especially if you like Thrash, give this album a try. If you like Metallica, this album is an essential part of your collection.

great first album.......2007-05-19

This is a great metal/thrash CD.

I see alot of responses here about Blitzkrieg and Am I Evil? being deleted from the original album. This is not the case folks!

First off, both of these songs were recorded in 1984 (nearly a year after their first album). They were originally recorded during their second album in the spring of 1984 and included as B-sides on the Creeping Death 12" single.

They only added the two tracks to the first album as BONUS tracks, not as originals. Besides, the songs are available in remastered form (and have been for nearly a decade now) on the Garage, Inc. CD.

OK, is everyone up to speed on this??

Anyway, Kill 'Em All is a great album. There was hardly any band that played faster or more aggressively at this time (1983).
Hit The Lights is a great opener. It almost goes against the grain for a few seconds. I knew this was thrash when i put it in and expected to be assaulted by guitar riffs and drums in the first 5 seconds but instead heard silence! But this song comes up slow and build up before clubbing you over the head. Wait for it....LOL!

The Four Horsemen is great. It has a galloping hoof beat guitar (hence the title) and sounds great. This song has the best lyrics on the entire album. Motorbreath is a nice short, quick thrash that is played very well.
Jump in the Fire is a bit of a weak song to me, but has some great riffing. Pulling Teeth is basically a bass solo. It's interesting musically and has a good mix of notes and distortion.

Whiplash is pure speed and any of live versions I have heard make this sound like it should be on some children's record as a hymn.
Phantom Lord and No Remorse are cut from the same cloth basically and two of the better songs here. Seek and Destroy is great here, but once again this was made to be played LIVE. Metal Militia is a great closer and ends to the beat of marching boots. How appropriate!

All in all this a great album. Some of the lyrics are amateurish and the vocals can get a bit annoying, but this is a first album and only hints at the greatness they would later achieve. You just have to listen for it a bit more here.

Five stars without question.

Excellent Debut.......2007-04-13

When you listen to this cd you think, what went wrong with this band? The cd shows you where this band could have went if they didnt go main stream. Slayer is my faviorte band in metal, but if Metallica kept making music like this, then I might have a different opinion.

Classic Thrash.......2007-03-08

I'm 38 and a professional. In my youth, I was as wild and wooly as anyone else, but I never got into Metallica as a younger adolescent. It was not until Metallica made Load, Reload, and Garage that I ever bought Metallica CDs. Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin, Run DMC, Crystal Method, Paul Van Dyk, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy . . . and of course, classical symphonic music (Chopin, Brahms, Tchaichovsky, etc.) are what I would consider my core music (obviously depending on mood). At the urging of an online friend I recently purchased all four of Metallica's first four CDs, and I do not regret it. It is certainly not something I'll listen to every day, nor even every week. But it is classic, it is powerful, it is iconic. When you are in the mood to head bang, nothing else satisfied! :)

I heard Rocco Deluca & the Burden for the first time at a John Mayer Performance at the Hollywood Bowl. I was in heaven. They have a great sound: classic rock and roll!

Refreshingly original..........2007-06-26

I've been a Jude Cole fan for ages and have praccitally all his work in my admittedly oversized music collection...when I heard Jude had started his own label I was particularly interested in what kind of stuff we'd be seeing. Well, Lifehouse's stuff has had the Jude Cole treatment and I can't complain. That's why when I heard Rocco DeLuca was on Jude's label, I knew I had to check it out. This is some excellent stuff that needs your attention...very stripped down, very straight forward, very nicely done. I wish Jude would come out with another CD but to hear his touch on stuff like this is just as good. "Colorful"..."Bus Ride"...Mystified"...
all this stuff makes me want to hear more. I hope these guys are around for a LONG time to come. But don't take my word for it...go ahead and buy this one!

Wow, this is ONE GREAT CD. Do yourself a big favor and BUY IT NOW. You can thank me later after you've played it 20-times in a row and are looking forward to the 21st. Original song writing, vocals, musicianship, production (cheers to Jude Cole), song arrangement and red hot single called Colorful (check out the video on VH1)!

All of the reviews I've seen try to compare this band it to other artists and bands. I remember when the Cars released their first CD and seeing a reviewer compare them to Lead Zeppelin and wondering what planet (other than earth) he was from. The same goes with this band. How about "this is a great band with an original sound"!

The flow of the CD makes you feel like you just sat through a concert. There are classic rockers like Colorful, How Fast, Gravity and Soul mixed with some beautiful acoustic numbers like Bus Ride and Mystified. The majority of the CD is rock. There are a couple of songs that have a blues feel like Swing Low.

Rocco Deluca's dad was a touring guitar player with some of the best blues artists in the business. Rocco followed in his footsteps backing up greats like Taj Mahal, John Mayall, John Lee Hooker and Johnny Cash. Needless to say he's been groomed his whole life to do this and it all comes together on this CD.

Complete from Start to Finish.......2007-05-10

Rarely is there an album I listen to in its entriety without skipping over lesser tracks. This slickly produced CD is an exception. Just about every track pops with an infectious energy that lifts your spirit. My faviorite tracks on the record are the first single "Colorful", "Swing Low", and "Soul". Believe the hype surrounding this band because they will eventually be huge.

Fashion be damned: Pop culture is just one big Hometown Buffet for writer-director Quentin Tarantino. Nowhere has that sensibility been more apparent than on his hand-picked soundtrack choices, and this oft tongue-in-cheek tale of a female assassin's revenge (his first film in six years) is no exception. With dizzy, almost palpable glee, Tarantino evokes the international hall-of-mirrors influences that energize martial arts films and much of Asian pop culture in general. Thus the hip-hop of Wu Tang's RZA (who, along with composer Charles Bernstein, concocts what passes for the score's traditional cues) somehow finds itself but one ingredient in a heady souffle that includes vintage TV and film cue rarities (Al Hirt's main title from The Green Hornet, Bernard Herrmann's haunting theme from Twisted Nerve, the spaghetti western melodrama of Luis Bacalov's "The Grand Duel," Isaac Hayes in full blaxploitation mode on "Run Fay Run"), Charlie Feathers' vintage rockabilly and a pan-kitsch sensibility that encompasses Zamfir, Nancy Sinatra's angst-in-the-pants take "Bang, Bang" and Santa Esmeralda's disco-era workout of "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." Tarantino's contemporary Japan-Pop selections are no less giddy, ranging from Meiko Kaji's sultry "Flower of Carnage" to The 5.6.7.8's loopy "Woo Hoo." It's everything we've come to expect from a Tarantino score (including dialog excerpts and a few sound fx stingers), with a madcap trip around the pop music world thrown in for good measure. -- Jerry McCulley

Can a great song make a great record?.......2007-07-18

Perhaps it's just my residual jubilation from having seen the Decemberists in Central Park just two nights ago, but I have become addicted to the Mariner's Revenge Song. It is perfect - unique, image-laden, funny, ironic, and fun.

The group concluded their quite long encore with the Mariner's Revenge Song at the show. It became clear that each member of the Decemberists loves this music. For other groups, use of Dickensian imagery might be corny, but somehow it works, even shines.

So, yes - buy the album just for this song. But the rest of the LP is great as well.

I don't tire of listening to this over and over, especially the 3-some of 16 Military Wives / Engine Driver / On the Bus Mall. Of course, the Mariner's Revenge is a fun tale indeed.

Though perhaps not quite at the level of CRANE WIFE, the unique sound and intriguing lyrics of The Decemberists do not disappoint.

Though it can't beat The Crane Wife, this CD is an incredible mix of music. It's got everything one needs in an album from The Decemberists- insanely long songs that glide by in an instant, short songs that give you a feeling of forever, and upbeat melodies to bring you up! Each song is a poem in itself. Colin Molloy has an irrepressible talent for writing lyrics.

Smart and Diverse.......2007-03-02

The Decemberists have a brilliant album here. Not only is the music entertaining to listen to, it also is smartly written. From the slow, mournful sounds of "Eli, the Barrow Boy" to the driving rhythm of "The Infanta", there is certainly a diverse range on this album.
However, what truly makes this album great is the though that was put into writing the lyrics of each song. To some it may seem like "big words" are being thrown in at random, but a careful listen reveals that they are appropriately used in their context. "The Mariner's Revenge Song" especially shines in this aspect. It is a sea shanty of epic proportions, telling the tall tale of how a mariner seeks revenge on his arch nemesis who had ruined his life.
If you are looking for indie/ folk rock, then I can't recommend another album more highly. Picaresque is a fantastic album that stands high above other albums that I have listened to.

Life has gotten so much easier for these guys ever since Pavement broke up. After all, how many flannel-shirt wearing, floppy-haired, Fall sound-alikes can the average person swallow? Oh well, now that the playing field is theirs alone, Spoon do not disappoint. Kill The Moonlight is their most melodically accomplished work to date, shimmying through the primal tambourine shakes of "Small Stakes," breaking a sweat with the spiky lo-fi swagger of "Stay Don't Go," and getting all starry-eyed on the three-and-a-half minute acoustic epic "Don't Let It Get You Down." So good, you'll even forgive them for blatantly Malkmus-derived song titles like "Paper Tiger" and "Vittorio E." --Aidin Vaziri

Catchy and straightforward.......2007-04-02

I started listening to spoon with Gimme Fiction. After enjoying that, I decided to go back in time and get Kill the Moonlight. Kill the Moonlight comes across as a more pure version of the same artistic vision. The rhythms and overall feel are quite similar, but here the sound is a bit sparser and cleaner. I am happy not to hear the feedback-riddled guitar scratchings that I consider the primary flaw in Gimme Fiction.

Spoon's Kill the Moonlight has to be one of the best rock 'n' rhythm CDs around. Minimalists, like the White Stripes, these guys put all of their instrumental talent into creating a pulse unique to each song. The melodies are highly accessible; you won't need to listen to this album twice to "get it." I really love it.

Spoon's Best? (A Series Of Sneaks?).......2006-09-02

Well, this is just another example of Spoon's stripped-downed rock. Because they do not confine their rock into neat and tidyness, they can often create some quality music with some excitement.

Although Spoon continues with a similar style there is a difference about this album. This is Spoon's beginning to break away from the extremely tight and cohesive albums where one song could rarely be distinguished against another. You couldnt love just one song, it was either liking the album or hating it.

This strategy does open Spoon up to more creativity but also allows more room for failure. But in this album Spoon gets it right. I love every song, it is just fun, stripped-down rock.

Looking For Hidden Gems?.......2006-07-18

I don't know why I bought this CD except that Spoon was getting a lot of critical praise in some of the rags. One reviewer below said he listened to this record obsessively for a couple of months. I did the very same thing. I buy a ton of music and I tend to buy CDs for a given band in bunches. I bought Gimmie Fiction and Kill Moonlight in the same emptying of the bucket I do each month here at Amazon. Sometimes they sit for a month or two until I get to them, but when I get to them I give them fair play as they say in the UK. I'll probably get skewered by this from somebody, but I liken this record to The Dandy Warhols' Welcome To The Monkey House (great CD, check it out if you don't own it); it's good clean foot tapping fun across the board. The sweet spot on this record for me is from track four "Stay, Don't Go" through track eight in "Don't Let It Get You Down." They are all catchy, well written, and remind me of some other band somehow. I definitely do not mean that in a negative way. I'm now a fan for sure. I have over 3400 CDs and many of them are in and out of the carousel in one or two listens after the initial surge, but this one I keep skipping as I replace the other CDs. I can't quite explain it. I always seems to want to hear it one more time before I file it. That's when I know I've hit on something. I'm always in constant search of great records that nobody knows that are good all the way through and this one qualifies. Recommended. Good job Spoon if you are out there somewhere reading.

Incredibly underrated gem.......2006-04-11

This fine band does wonders with the small stuff, light piano strokes and mad guitar riffs abound, Jonathan Fisk is their greatest song, period. I know now they sold their soul apparently to advertising world, but these songs are so strong, you can forget about that blunder. Again, I would think that all their proper CD's are essential, if you own one or more and are missing some, get them now. Their first release is OOP, so forget it.

If You Listen To Anything..........2007-07-22

This is the one. Colin and company make it happen. I've grown up with Elvis Costello and Nick Drake and Colin rates right up there with them. His lyrics are poetic and the band are cohesive and emotionaly intuitive. There is not a better orchastrated sound out there right now.

'Grace Cathedral Hill' is an amazing piece of music. From 'Leslie Ann Levine' to 'Youth And Beauty Brigade' I can't find a better album.

Disappointing.......2006-12-18

After first hearing the Decemberists for the first time on their following album Pictaresque, I went hunting them down in Zia's, looking for anything else they had out. So I bought this because of the .mp3 I had downloaded from this album--The Legionaire's Lament--which is a fantastic song. But when I finally popped into the CD player and got around to listening to it, I found myself fighting off waves of disappointment and trying to convince myself it was worth the money. Not that it's a really BAD CD, it's just a long way from Pictaresque. It lacks the upbeat, well-mixed quality of the latter, with slow dragging songs that wail on forever forlornly with very little difference in character. Comparatively, this is the monochrome album, and offers little in the way of excitement. I was pleased to learn that this was the older album, though, and that they were still progressing in the right direction. The two redeemingly flamboyant songs on this album are, in my opinion, "July, July!" and still, "The Legionaire's Lament".

This CD is amazing..........2006-11-10

I would urge everyone to buy this CD. I have been listening to it constantly in the car and it gets better and better. There is not a bad song on the CD. I am a 36-year old mom of four by the way, fave music in my past includes many ska bands, the Jam (all-time favorite), Paul Weller, the Beautiful South, the Who, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Simon and Garfunkel (yes, S&G!), Sublime, Beck, the Beastie Boys... Anyway the Decemberists are incredibly talented and unique and you should give them a listen. Best songs on the CD are "Odalisque," "Grace Cathedral Hill," "The Legionnaire's Lament," and "California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade," but they are all great. I personally LOVE Colin Meloy's voice and can't get enough of it. BUY THIS CD!!!

Sharing the Blessing.......2006-07-17

There are some bands that one is happy to hear the first time, and there are others that make one feel blessed. Listening to this Decembrists' CD, I reveled in my good fortune; what a wonderful world we live in that can yield music this good.

The Decembrists' "sound" is very distinctive-- organs and accordions feature prominently, while singer/songwriter Colin Meloy's voice is slightly reminiscent of Robyn Hitchcock. Like Hitchcock, Meloy has a uniquely personal writing style, but where Hitchcock is deliriously surreal, Meloy's writing is structured around storytelling. Simply reading through the lyrics (which can be enjoyed in and of themselves), these tales of life's, er, castaways in various exotic time and place settings entertains. Listening to them, of course, is even better.

Throughout, the Decembrists walk a remarkable tightrope. Their music is quirky without being obtuse, literate without being pretentious, catchy with being cloying... I've been listening to a lot of good music this year, and CASTAWAYS might be the highlight. And the fact that they're from Portland is just icing on the cake. Hey, there's a song here called "Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect"! You know, I wrote a guidebook to Portland architecture... and you really don't care. :)

We live this close to death.......2006-06-15

An astounding debut album, CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS became the foundation upon which the witty, eloquent Decemberists six began to build their empire. Trying on this album is like buying new clothes (a shopping metaphor, witness me aghast!) - at first they're stiff, they don't fit comfortably, and you look a little awkward in them, but once you've broken them in after a few wears they're worth their weight in gold.

Like a large chunk of hardcore Decemberists fans, I didn't really like this album on my first listen. I thought, "Okay. Okay, yeah, he's dreaming about being an architect. And accordions, sure. That's... different?" It took me a few listens to realize that I was onto something here. I abandoned all other musical pursuits and chased after this seductive sound, leading me to the haunting "Leslie Anne Levine" (the one track I recommend you listen to above all others), the soothing "Cocoon," the plaintive "Odalisque," and the remaining six tracks on here. I couldn't get enough of their unique sound - the drumming was perfectly on, the guitar strumming accompanied by a waxing and waning accordion, as well as trumpets, violins, and keyboards juxtaposing in such a weird way that it all fits, like puzzle pieces found after months under your couch.

Colin Meloy's voice is what made me gravitate towards the music the most, though; I've heard it likened to a donkey wheeze and many other regrettable things, but the one thing I don't hear very often is people complaining about it. People like the donkey. I like the donkey. Okay, forget it, he doesn't sound like that (to me), and I honestly can't describe to you how he sounds because you have to hear it for yourself. His voice reaches all kinds of octaves from line to line, and I found myself getting shivers all over in certain songs when he hit that note, nudged by guitar and accordion, that made me say, "Whoa."

Subsequent LPs like HER MAJESTY and PICARESQUE, as long as the short but sweet 5 SONGS and THE TAIN, just don't hold a candle to this. Some bands get better with time, which is true of the Decemberists, but some bands get better without being able to touch their first album. CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS: case in point. You'll be humming along to indie hit "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" and the darkly funny "A Cautionary Song" while expanding your vocabulary at a rate that is almost scary (i.e., courtesan, pinioned). And that, dear reader, is what I call music.

It's flatly unfair that the Gossip aren't a massive success, a rocknroll giant slayer, especially as they unleash another 10-song, 30-minute zinger like Standing in the Way of Control. Singer Beth Ditto's boundless, whether shouting out the title song's chorus or feather-dusting the lyric on Meg White-sounding album closer, "Dark Lines." The band rocks with an unerring simplicity, a leanness that writhes. The big-beat, hop-along (and sing-along) "Listen Up," is the centerpiece here, a stripped focus on the Gossip's core conviction, that rhythm can rock like little else. The tune has Ditto holding court over a bluntly simple one-two beat, cautioning a crowd that by rights ought to be tenfold larger: "now gather round/now listen up," warning them that "some people talk way too much." As Ditto stuns, drummer Hannah Blilie's beat pounds, and Brace Paine's guitar lays down a simple law. Ignorance of that law is no excuse. --Andrew Bartlett

This cd by the Gossip is one of those rare ones that you let play all the way through and then start it over again. Very distinct vocals from Beth Ditto and very good music. My personal favorite tracks are the title cut and HOLY WATER.

OK so this is one of the big things in the NME at the moment. It is not that bad but also not that great. The singing is really very very good but the music is little mroe than unoriginal derivative new wave. As I write the singer has a lot of potential but the rest is not that great.

Hi Guys

I have to say i disagree with the above-mentioned reviews. I haven't felt the same way about a band since i was going through a large White Stripes phase some years ago.

This band are very similar to the Whites Stripes in that they have that stripped down, bedroom sounding production similar to Elephant. They also have the same type of bluesey guitar licks. The vocals are absolutely tremendous, bringing a soul voice to a rock band, although if she went on American Idol they would slate her.

It is of course the songs themselves that cement this record. Every song is a stone cold hit. The chorus of "coal to diamonds" has so much emotion it makes me feel nauseous.

The only downside is that the chorus of "Keeping you Alive" sounds slightly tacked on, even though it makes the main riff of that song sound cooler.

It is also worth noting that this band are hot enough to have tracks remixed by Belgian rock/dance crossover Soulwax and Le Tigre.

If these guys really float your boat it is worth checking out The Invisible Deck the Rogers Sisters.

Quentin Tarantino wraps up his dizzy double-dose of martial arts film tribute cum informed paean to junk cinema with the throw-it-all-against-wall abandon that's become his cliched trademark, if not necessarily his true strength as a filmmaker. That sensibility has long informed his quirky, world-pop savvy soundtracks as well, though this chapter's collection gratifyingly sacrifices a dollop of eclecticism in favor of a little more focused nuance. Revolving loosely around a decidedly international, free-floating axis of Latin rhythm (Chingon's "Malaguena Salerosa, " the flamenco-demento of Lole Y Manuel's "Tu Mira") and Western twang, Tarantino's choices include Morricone both familiar (The Good, the Bad and Ugly's evocative "Il Tramonto") and less so (Il mercenario's "l'arena," "A Silhoutte of Doom"), fellow Roman film scorer Luis Bacalov's slinky, guitar-driven "The Summertime Killer" and a couple disparate slices of Americana by country legend Johnny Cash and rockabilly loose cannon Charlie Feathers. The director's pop fare covers less adventuresome territory, though Malcolm McLaren's trip-hop take on the Zombie's British Invasion chestnut "She's Not There" somehow seems all-of-a-piece with the retro groove of Shivaree's "Goodnight Moon" and melodramatic kitsch of Japanese actress Meiko Kaji's "Urami Bushi." It's all interspersed with excerpts of Tarantino-penned dialog from the film, snippets that only inspire an even greater admiration for his adventurous taste as musical compiler/supervisor. -- Jerry McCulley

A good CD that suffers considerably from the missing tracks. However, as a result of searching for that which is amiss I was rewarded by finding R. Rodriguez's music, and Del Castillo.

This Cd does not have everything on it from kill bill 2 that I wanted. A few songs and the bride training with pai mei hitting wooded wall saying
ah ah ah ah. So there for I was somewhat dissapoint with this cd.

Music From Kill Bill 2...........2006-10-09

I remember first seeing Kill Bill part 1 in the theatre, and hearing the opening track (Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang"). It was solely this track that made me want to pick up that soundtrack, and which lead me to picking up this sequel as well. I like this soundtrack much better. Yeah sure, some songs from the movie aren't on here. This album still delivers though. Among my favs:

Track 2 - Awesome soft rock song. Shivaree sounds so sexy too.
Track 4 - A great country sounding song, I love the way Charlie Feathers sings! It's kinda funny.
Track 5 - Great spanish song sung by a kid; makes me think of poor dirt road towns in Mexico
Track 10 - Not a big Johnny Cash fan, but the lyrics in this song are great. Seriously.
Track 12 - AWESOME song. I bet 100 bucks you'll like this one
Track 14 - My fav. song on the album. A GREAT latin rock song. Makes me wish I was singing that to a bunch of latinas. Man I'd get so much--err nevermind.
Track 15 - My 2nd fav. song. A great chill song sung by a Japanese Woman. Makes me think I'm in a dark empty bar in Tokyo or somethin. I dont know what's up with the rap music lateron in this track -prob. hidden- but it sucks.

Bottom line, if you have good taste in music, pick this one up. I don't ever buy soundtracks, but this one and the first kill bill OST are in my collection.

i too wish i had been more careful and read the reviews, then i would have noticed all the missings songs and that the main one i wanted ( navajo joe - ennio morricone --bills exit ) was not on there. i still would have bought it but would not have been so dissapointed when i got to the end. i also feel very cheated.
what is the point of bringing out a soundtrack and missing out songs? should it not be all of them?
i feel bills exit music was a key song that should not have been missed off, as this scene is the whole point of the films, when she finally gets her revenge and should not have been missed.
