Only Living Witness' second album, Innocents, was one of the best loud rock records of 1996. Released by a label best known for its roster of European death metal, it was positively exploding with the kind of relentless, groovy riffs that would make Corrosion of Conformity green with envy. Only Living Witness eschew typical metal excesses, opting for head-down intensity and good old-fashioned ass-kicking. Sabbath may have been its archetype, but the band certainly drew its sound from punk's economy and rage as well. Unfortunately OLW broke up shortly after this release, leaving this final, amazing record as its legacy. --Adem Tepedelen

Innocents Review.......2007-03-24
Great CD. One of my favorites. Great to leave on repeat. "Yahoo!" is one of my favorite songs to work out to.
A landmark.......2006-08-23
There's probably not much need for me to add to the dawn Chorus at this point, but just in case anyone was still wondering: _The Innocents_ is a classic. I say this even though I never did manage to get into "Chains of Love," the song that brings a lot of people to this album -- well, that and "A Little Respect," which was used as a leitmotif in an early episode of NBC's "Scrubs" and rightfully celebrated/pilloried for being one of the most annoyingly catchy pop songs ever unleashed upon an unsuspecting world.
As any good synthpop geek knows, Clarke and Bell have bestowed upon us an impressive quantity of not-THAT-guilty pleasures over the years, but this is their high-water mark. Personal favorites in addition to ALR are "Ship of Fools," "Heart of Stone," "Witch in the Ditch," and "When I Needed You," though just about everything here has its merits. There's a warmth and a joy here that has rarely been replicated within this genre or any other.
almost 20 years later..........2006-06-02
i honestly can't believe it's been nearly twenty years since 'the innocents' landed vince clark and andy bell in the american psyche. it was something of a mixed blessing for us fans who'd been with the band since the beginning. part of me loved having erasure to myself. everyone at my school was listening to metallica, rush, george michael, et al. all that changed when 'chains of love' burst on the scene. dispite an atrocious video, 'chains of love' was the perfect single to introduced erasure to hoardes of people who suddenly declared erasure 'my favorite new band.'
but i digress. 'the innocents' truly is one of erasure's best albums (i personally consider 'i say, i say, i say' their best moment), and it's easy to understand why it was so popular. the album was solid, in fact, that it almost plays as a greatest hits album. a lot of bands spend entire careers to get the same number of hits erasure had on one album. the erasure formula is fairly simple. vince clark pens the music, andy bell the lyrics. vince, the godfather of electronic pop music, was always light years ahead of his peers, both in constructing flawless melodies, as well as harnessing a rapidly evolving and improving technology.
after two relatively successful UK albums, 'the innocents' see the dynamic duo firing on all cylinders. the album opens with the impossibly catchy 'a little respect,' a song that, judging from the video, has as much to do with andy bell's flamboyent sexuality as it does vince clark's association with the band he started, depeche mode. 'phantom bride,' one of the finer songs, is another solid dance hit (and a perfect concert opener for the park city, ut show back in 1988--man, i am old). 'chains of love,' 'yahoo,' 'heart of stone,' and the weepy 'when i needed you' showed just how potent and prolific erasure had become in churning out top-quality pop songs. it seemed as though they barely had to try. i mean, really, is there a more perfect dance song than 'chains of love?'
sadly, erasure's popularity drastically fell after 'the innocents.' for those who didn't stick around after the duo hit their peak, you've missed a very impressive career (detractors be damned). sure, erasure weren't going to solve world peace, or make you think about anything extraordinarily deep, but i suspect they never wanted to. erasure was and is a dance bad. if their goal was and is to make unabashedly peppy dance music, they succeeded mightily and nowhere is that more apparent than in 'the innocents.'
whenever i listen to this album i'm immediately transported to a happier, care-free time when i didn't have a driver's license, bills, serious worries, college, etc--and that might might be the greatest compliment of all. thanks, guys.
Outstanding, highly recommended.......2005-12-18
For years, I didnt buy this album, thinking all the good songs from here were on the Pop album. But there are many songs at least as good as the ones that got all the airplay in the US such as Phantom Bride, Hallowed Ground, Imagination, Weight of the World, Yahoo, just to name a few. The only track I didnt care for is River Deep Mtn High. Many people will also single out 65,000, but I looked at it as more of an intermission. So your left with 11 strong tracks, which is better than 99.9% of the albums out there.
80's bliss.......2005-10-31
One of the only albums I know every word too. The best sing along album of all time. The new synth music is good but it will never be as good as erasure.

Highest Quality Hildegard.......2005-09-28
Sequentia's entire series of Hildegard recordings is inspired, but there is a rather inarticulable quality to this cd that somehow soars even higher. It is apparently a result of the centrality of the Ursula stories, here musically illustrated, to Hildegard's entire conception of herself as a pledged virgin and artisan, and the freedom she found within that role to allow her gifts to fly as high as they could for the glory of God. Nor, in our terms, was it any sort of solo act: Hildegard stood quite consciously at the pinnacle of a vast supporting structure of devotion, prayer, sacred order and art.
Absolutely divine........1999-10-26
"My husband and I first encountered this CD in our local library. It's one of those encounters that transformed our life. Listening to it almost daily, while we're getting ready for the day, while we're working on our computers, or while doing the dishes, has helped us have an experience of the divine no matter where we are or what we're doing. Ever since we were introduced to the work of St. Hildegard of Bingen, we have read quite a bit about her and her works and are truly grateful to this great soul for what she has given our world. This CD is a great introduction to the world of Hildegard, together with another fine CD, Feather on the Breath of God."

an undiscovered gem.......2007-08-02
I normally don't write too many CD reviews, because most of the time I feel that I have nothing to add to the usually voluminous reviews on most CD's. So in this case, I felt very surprised that nobody has written a review on this CD which has been released for over a month, especially since this is such good music. May be it's because Ash is from Nothern Ireland and therefore unfamiliar in the States. I wouldn't rate this CD 5 stars, but I could honestly say the stuff here is better than 80% of the new music out there. Ash's latest release has songs that with good melodies, intelligent and reflective lyrics, and good execution. The best track is the title track, "Twilight of the Innocents". In fact, IMO just the title track is worth the price of the CD. It has the kind of emotional outburst that brings to mind the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me". This is a good band with some great stuff. It'd be a shame if more people didn't check them out. Enjoy!

Album Description
2007 album from the Irish trio, their fifth album overall. With legendary Rolling Stones/Elton John arranger Paul Buckmaster contributing string parts, Twilight Of The Innocents begins with a barreling trio of Punk-Pop stormers; the loved-up 'I Started A Fire', the mightily pissed-off first single 'You Can't Have It All', the rifftastic 'Blacklisted' and the spine-tingling 'Polaris'. The album also showcases a new musical ambition in the stylistic twists and turns of the wonderfully buoyant 'Ritual ', in the fizz and pop of the swoonsome 'End Of The World' and particularly, in the epic grandeur of the title track, which closes the album. With the band slimmed down to its original three-piece status, this album is ambitious, energized and packed to the rafters with tunes. Fifteen years after they formed at school in Northern Ireland, Ash have never sounded better. Warner.

It's always a treat to experience the best of something: in this case, a performance of 16th-century music. Of course, the form and makeup of the viol consort, which includes various sizes of viols, often joined by other strings such as lute, itself is an instrumental configuration as close to perfection as any ensemble can be. This, accompanied by a style of writing that fully exploits the complementary timbres and the abilities of each instrument to delineate intricate polyphonic passages as well as to deliver chordal harmonies with uniquely rich resonance, makes for some of the most listenable music ever invented. Jordi Savall and his Hesperion XX are simply the world's best at this sort of music, and on this program they just flawlessly go about their business, bringing us more than two dozen delightful, dancing pieces from several composers, including John Taverner, William Mundy, and Anonymous. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Transported to another age.......2001-01-23
Not that many years ago, my favourite classical DJ expressed the view that "original instruments" ensembles were a "passing fad". He was strong in his belief that early instruments, even those manufactured today on early models, couldn't provide the depth and range of music his critical ear required. The emergence of La Petite Band began the process of bending his rigid outlook. When Jordi Savall came into prominence, and in particular Savall's Hesperion XX, this commentator had become a staunch advocate. I followed right along with him.
This CD exemplifies the superb quality of music and sound production Savall and his team. It would be interesting to know just how deeply Savall gets into the production of his CDs, for they are uniformly excellent. This one takes us from Savall's Catalan to the courts of Elizabethan England. In presenting that time and place, Savall adds a special knowledge of how the music of that era was produced. You almost automatically feel yourself transported to an English manor house or palace to join the other courtiers in listening to these delightful renditions. It's important to remember that this was the primary domestic entertainment of the day. We forget how sensitive the hearing of the listeners of that day must have been to nuances we often miss in the sound competitive world we live in. They could, and did, focus on the sound and only the best was accepted. Or, indeed, even offered by composers.
Savall, as usual, has drawn it all together with finesse and ability. Watching him conduct is to see each note from every instrument drawn forth and assessed. It's almost as if the sound will not be released to the listener unless perfectly produced. But under his direction, that is exactly what is accomplished. Of all the CDs of Elizabethan instrumentals, this must be your first choice.
Exceptional!.......2001-01-22
This a wonderful cd and a must have if you enjoy this genre of classical music. A wonderful recording and very soothing to listen too. I find the opening track quite catchy. Get it!
Beautiful Sounds.......1999-11-18
This is a complex sort of music played on period instruments giving the late twentieth Century listener a challenge. Once you get over the novelty of the tones you find an underlying treat of rhythm and melody.
This is well worth buying.
Superb- For Connoisseurs of the Genre.......1999-08-22
Hesperion XX performs this genre of music as well as anyone today, and this recording shows their reputation is deserved. This music is played with consummate professionalism on period instruments. However, this might not be the best recording for a first exposure to this repetoire. It lacks a brightness that modern instruments have and that contemporary audiences frequently expect. It contains music by composers that you almost have to be a musicologist or a musician active in 16th century music to know. But if you want to hear a splendid and- I think- authentic recording of Elizabethan Consort music, then look no further.

A Magnificent Band---*Both* Versions!.......2006-07-03
Every once in a while you come across a band whose music blows you away *so* completely, that you're left dumbfounded that more people don't know about them. One such band I've come across in my musical travels is Renaissance, and I want *everybody* to know about them. They were founded by former Yardbirds guitarist Keith Relf and drummer Jim McCarty in 1969 as a progressive band that blended rock with classical & folk---definitely a radical departure from the Yardbirds. Also in the band at the beginning were Keith's sister Jane Relf on vocals, keyboardist John Hawken and bassist Louis Cennamo. This first incarnation of Renaissance recorded two albums, in 1969 and 1971 respectively, titled "Renaissance" and "Illusion," and this 2-CD set, "Innocents & Illusions," collects them both along with some equally-precious bonus tracks. I'll get straight to the point: Renaissance were (and are) a *phenomenal* band. Their musical blend of classical/folk/rock is truly entrancing, their musical chops, songwriting, arrangements and vocals (including Jane Relf's lovely falsetto, and, later on, Annie Haslam) absolutely stunning. From the moment I first played "Innocents & Illusions," I was simply floored by what I heard. I thought, "GOD, this band is good!" And they are. The majestic beauty, power, and passion of such songs as "Kings And Queens," "Island," "Bullet," "Love Goes On," "Mr. Pine," "Past Orbits Of Dust," and bonus tracks like "Shining Where The Sun Has Been" and "All The Fallen Angels" will knock you out, I guarantee it. Sadly, after releasing "Illusion," creative differences pulled apart this first version of Renaissance. But all was not lost for this very unique band, for, with Keith Relf & Jim McCarty's blessing, an all-new version of Renaissance---with a completely different line-up no less, including the one-and-only Annie Haslam on lead vocals---rose out of the first group's ashes in 1972 with the release of "Prologue." This new Renaissance would go on to cult status success & record eight more studio albums and tour consistently until 1983 (plus a reunion studio album & tour in 2001). But it all started here with the original Renaissance. Led by Keith, Jim and Jane, they laid down the blueprint for the later Renaissance to follow, and "Innocents & Illusions" is an outstanding introduction to this group's incredible music. Do you like progressive rock? Then have I got a band for you---Renaissance! A magnificent band---*both* versions. Start your Renaissance collection today with "Innocents & Illusions."
Pre Annie Haslam Renaissance.......2006-03-17
This was originally a project of Yardbirds lead singer, Keith Relf, his sister Jane, and Yardbird Jim Mc Carthy. This is their first 2 albums on one set and it's pretty good. The success of this was a lot below the Yardbirds and the 3 moved on after this while Annie Haslam, John Tout, Michael Dunford took over and their first release was "Prologue". This is much more in the spirit of "Prologue" than later Renaissance works. The vocals are shared and not dominated by one voice here and it's good progressive rock. Fans of Annie's version of the band and progressive rock fans in general should enjoy this. With Yardbirds fans, they may not as it really nothing like a Yardbirds set.

What's all the fuss about?.......2007-01-31
After hearing so many of the bands I love drop the name "Only Living Witness" and learning that their two full length albums would be reisssued, I couldn't resist picking this up. Upon doing so, I am sad to say, "What's the big deal?". To be fair, there are some memorable songs here. Prone Mortal Form, VTA, and December explode from the speakers with rage and precision, with more than a few moments calling Life Of Agony to mind. However, much of the bulk of this re-release is not anything special. In the context of the band's heyday, their legend seems suspect to me. Their best songs are just to close to LOA and the rest just aren't that good. Sure, Jonah Jenkins lyrics are somewhat unique, but in the end, many come across as pretentious and amateurish, almost as if he needs to prove that he has an impressive vocabulary; often at the expense of groove and melody. His singing itself is not much better than a half baked Vedder/Weiland/random90'sdrugaddict clone. Basically, if you miss grunge or Life Of Agony's old sound, this may please you. And hey, two cds for sixteen bucks isn't a bad deal. I just wish it would have been a great deal. Oh well.
A Lost Gem Found!.......2007-01-08
This masterpiece fell between the cracks at a time when bands like Soundgarden had let the mantle of "Grunge" lapse; and bands like Godsmack had yet to come to the fore of "Nu-metal" (or whatever it's called) by adding a dose of Sabbatherian technical ecstasy. There, between the heydays of STP and Sevendust, lurked a number of under-appreciated grief stricken pounders. There were Sugartooth, Chum, Mental Hippie Blood, Mindfunk (the Dropped CD); and a few more; some more appreciated than others. But my favorite by far was Only Living Witness. The band "Fireball Ministry" (Their music is not our music) that I heard the other day reminded me a little of OLW; but OLW was more diverse; with not every song being heavy. Another influence on OLW might have been Helmet; but again this band is more dynamic,as well as being tighter. It's great to see this out there again, because I think they were a little ahead of their time in some ways. Nothing revolutionary mind you, just very, very good. My only concern is that since a lot of bands have popularized this "sound"; younger listeners might be unimpresssed by the level of technological firepower compared to today's teched up crunch.
The way it was meant to be played..........2006-09-19
Only Living Witness, though now 11 years gone, have had their two full length records re-issued and not a note sounds dated. This is metal the way it was meant to be played: with precision, with fury, and chock full of hooks. The re-issue comes at a time when the "new metal" genre is emerging. OLW shows where bands like Shadows Fall got their roots. Highly recommended.
