The roughest of punks would often claim that though Orange County's Huntingdon Beach was a major center for hardcore, it never produced a genuinely heavy outfit. That was until the emergence of the Deadlights (originally known as Suction), a band of metallic power and fervor with a street-schooled and positivist message. Having taken their name from a Stephen King story (the deadlights are what one sees at the point of death), you'd expect the band, like so many of their peers, to concern themselves with conspiracy theories, and blood. In fact, singer Duke proves himself sensitive and knowledgeable when dealing with death, drugs, religion, love and sadomasochism; indeed, he's actually rather like King at his most thoughtful and restrained. Musically, The Deadlights delivers tempestuous rock made all the more disorientating by sampled shrieks and machine crashes and squeals, while Duke slips from a guttural roar to surprisingly sweet pop trill. --Dominic Wills

Customer Reviews:
Another great band leaves us.......2006-04-03
Lead singer Duke goes from creepy high pitched type versus to demonic growls with the snap of a finger. This is a good thing, because with a name like 'Deadlights' you need to have a voice that makes it hard to sleep at night, and coupled with brutal musicanship and samples from horror films, names of tracks like 'Bitter' 'Whores' and 'Sado' and lyrics dealing with death and S&M 'Deadlights' have everything it takes to scare the $hit out of you. From the opening sample for 'Bitter' with some creepy man repeating 'No' while some chick moans this bands first and only release gets you ready for the onslaught that is 'The Deadlights'. 'Amplifier' gets Duke sounding something like if Billy Corgan grew some balls. 'Junk' has some of the coolest drumming I've every heard and although the guitar progression is nothing new, the chorus is so brutal it's worth listening to and the guitar intro to verse two helps make this track one step above. 'Foolish Pride' sounds a bit different than anything else on this album. It starts off aucustic and never gets out of the mainstream vibe...and thats not too bad becasue the song is pretty good. Again though, Duke sounds quite a bit like Billy Corgan here. 'Whores' is one of the best tracks here...just brutal and in your face! 'Pox Eclipse' is probably my favorite track. 'Distant Sun' gets back into the creepyness that 'Bitter' brought to the table while the closer 'Falling Down' ends things with a tribal sounding track, like something that would close a Godsmack CD...like 'Voodoo' or something, but the guitar work here is awsome. All in all, great album by a band that should still be around. Too Bad.
Where are you guys?.......2005-08-14
After this album was released the deadlights instantly became on of my favorite metal bands. They have a lot of similarities to coal chamber. If you are into heavy metal that is way out there then you should check this band out. I just wish these guys would come out with some new material. Great cd though if you don't have it.
weird but good.......2004-04-17
the creepy effects, growling high pitched vox, and crunchy guitars are rampant on this album.duke can really howl.guitar work is more intricate than can be expected on a typical metal album and the las two tracks "time" and "falling down" are two of the best mellow album enders ever.definitely grab this one.for fans of v shape mind, reveille, tool.
lost gold!.......2004-03-01
The Deadlights rock! This cd was one of my favourites from years ago when it first came out. For some reason i got rid of the cd and have only just picked it up again! I WAS A FOOL! and you will be too if you pass this over.
This album is a dirty excercise in the finer aspects of melodic metal produced during the whole nu-metal scene. some may call this new metal, but to me it has much more credability than any of that rubbish! The songs are well structured, the guitars dirty, the bass clicky, crunching and driving and the vocals haunting and angry! what more could u want from metal? There is a nice balance between straight ahead metal and melodic catchy tracks! Check it out!
From A Scottish Metal Fan!
It's Just so Sad.......2003-04-08
It's just so sad that other generations below us had to miss out on this incredible band. Im sorry for everyone out there who is missing out on this band...And im so glad I listened to that one sound clip, that one day when i was scoping for new bands...Thank God for fate.
