Can't wait to get it!.......2007-07-17
My 12yr old introduced me to WT via her love of Anime and similar sites. Very similar to Enya, Enigma and Evanescence, yet vocals and instrumentals VASTLY more mesmirizing and worthy! So much so I bought 2. One for each of us! Looking forward to it! Her's is a surprise.
Amazing!!.......2007-07-16
This is Within Temptation at their best! Every part of this cd has feeling to it. I'f your a fan of bands like evanescence I recommend Within Temptation..and really this band holds their own. GREAT CD!! GET IT!!
Worth the money .......2007-07-04
I looked everywhere for this CD. Trust me, you can't find it. That said it's one of the best CD's I have bought in the past few years. The vocalist is compelling, and the overall sound is great. They're a lot like Nightwish soundwise, but the lyrics are much better in my opinion. Worth the money any day.
I shouldn't have spoken so soon........2007-06-06
I've heard only a few songs from Within Temptation and had avoided them for years after. They didn't gain much attention from me because I wasn't impressed by what I heard (I was expecting a bombastic first impression). I was wrong to do so because I took a listen to them again not too long ago by watching the video for "Memories" and I became highly interested in them. I downloaded "Jillian" and after hearing an awesome intro, I was enraptured completely. I ordered this cd without hearing the rest of the tracks. I rarely do such a thing. "Pale" and "Memories" are gems.
This album has a high range of hauntingly imaginative atmosphere that few bands, Leaves' Eyes in particular, can produce. While having a solid theme to this album, W.T. put various emotions and atmospheres into each song. This is a good trait because it keeps us interested for a long time and usually has the listener repeating the tracks. Why didn't I see this sooner? I am always eager to hear different bands and different material.
This will go into my ever growing music collection.
I recommend Leaves' Eyes because, they too, are able to grow on to the listener, while keeping them in a prolonged trance. I regret the fact that I have avoided this band. Might I also mention that Sharon actually does have a wonderful voice. I have another lady to grace my tons of Anneke Van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine, and Cristina Scabbia vocal contributions.
Wonderful Music.......2007-05-07
For those who are drawn towards any music like Enigma, Enya, or Evanescence, this cd has alot of great tracks. I recommend it to anyone who has such taste in music.

Customer Reviews:
Another great album by WT.......2007-07-29
First I'd like to make one note. There are three versions of this album out. This version is probably the smartest choice. It's less than half the cost of the imports and it also includes one more song, Stand My Ground. Sure Stand My Ground has already been released on Silent Force. But you're still talking about half the cost and one added bonus song. It sounds like a no-brainer to me.
I got into Within Temptation with their album Silent Force. I immediately fell in love with their music. Their mix of orchestral music and heavy mettle riffing along with Sharon's amazing voice range landed their music as an instant staple in my collection.
This album is no less amazing. The lyrics can be related to by anyone. The variety in each song keeps the album from getting dull or redundant.
If you like Within Temptation, this album will not disappoint. If you've never heard their music before, I heavily suggest both this album and Silent Force. This album would probably be a great starting point, though, given it's price.
Finally, a US release!.......2007-07-27
Within Temptation are back with their latest arsenal of symphonic rock and metal songs bound to infest themselves in the listener's mind for days on end, and while The Heart of Everything may not benefit from strong orchestral emphasis (as seen on their previous album), it will surely retain WT's loyal fanbase, and will no doubt be their key to crack into the US market.
When I first listened to this album (half asleep on a tour bus in France, mind you), I wasn't sure what to think. There are some notable changes from the band's last album: Sharon's vocals don't quite come off as angelic as they did on "Jillian" or "Dark Wings," instead remaining in a somewhat lower key for the majority of the first few tracks - with virtually none of the high-pitched screeching that distinguished them from the rest of the symphonic metal pack. "The Howling" is a good example of this - much of the verses feature shouted vocals from Sharon that may take some getting used to, but actually suit the song quite nicely.
The next two tracks, "What Have You Done" and "Frozen" were rather disappointing for me. The first makes "Stand My Ground" look like Dark Tranquillity, and I can only assume that this was forced by the band's label. Anyone who said this song sounded like "Bring Me to Life" was right on the mark. Half the vocals are done by Life of Agony frontman Keith Caputo, and as far as I'm concerned, he's no longer welcome on a WT song again. :P That aside, there's really little here to maintain my interest, and "Frozen" is nothing to write home about either. Sharon's vocals seem strained during the chorus, similar to those of Alanis Morissette's, but not in an attractive way.
Fortunately the album picks up its pace with the appealing "Our Solemn Hour," which will surely win over a live audience. The strangest track of the album, the title track, follows, which marks the biggest departure for Sharon - entirely abandoning her falsetto roots for a deeper, grungier vocal. And this time their experimentation worked. "Hand of Sorrow" revisits the older days of WT, sounding closer to Mother Earth-era writing than anything else.
Another favorite, "The Cross," benefits from a well-rounded chorus and better-than-average lyrics, while "Final Destination," a slightly less memorable but altogether decent track should please fans. "All I Need" is the second ballad from the album (they usually come in threes), and while not their finest ballad to date, still surpasses "Frozen." "The Truth Beneath the Rose," the longest track of the album is a success - combining a beautiful symphonic intro with reflective lyrics that may or may not have been inspired by the Beauty of the Beast. Our third ballad, "Forgiven," is also a winner, stripped down to a keyboard and Sharon's beautiful vocals that will send chills down your spine.
Overall, I think this was a very good buy. It doesn't look like the band will surpass their magnum opus, 2000's Mother Earth, but that doesn't mean they'll stop putting out other great albums for their fans. While there are a couple misses, the majority of the songs here are hits and I hope any Americans with taste in music will make the wise decision to buy this CD when it's released domestically in July.
Highlights: The Howling, The Heart of Everything, Hand of Sorrow, The Cross, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Forgiven

Originally reviewed on April 30. Here's hoping more American fans will check out this great band, and hopefully dig into their back catalog as well. :)
this sound done right.......2007-07-27
"The Heart of Everything" is Within Temptation's first attempt at conquering the U.S. While I have had it with this genre (which, I would like to add, is not "goth") in general, it is bands - and albums - like this that keep me from writing all of these Sarah Brightman metal bands off. This is, simply put, a solid piece of work and likely to find its way onto my best-of list at the end of the year. Many have said that they are disappointed that WT has streamlined their sound into a more commercial direction, but in my opinion, this direction works for them. The songs are immediately catchy (I'll even admit it: I like "What Have You Done"), without being inane. This is obviously being pushed to the Evanescence crowd, but frankly this band is better. Hopefully WT won't be too late to the table. And as much as I like "The Hear tof Everything," here is a similar album that I like even better: After Forever. Better yet, buy them both and strike a blow against wretched post-grunge.
Album of the year!.......2007-07-26
Within Temptations's 4th album has finally been released in America (it was released in Europe since March). This album is incredible from start to finish. Songs like Frozen, Forgiven, Hand Of Sorrow, and the title track showcases Sharon's beautiful operatic voice backed by heavy guitars, strings, and choirs, which makes the songs very epic. They will be headlining their first US tour in September so make sure to check them out. If you like Evanescence or Nightwish, you'll love Within Temptation.
A Masterpiece.......2007-07-26
This CD is astonishing, which is to be expected from an incredible band like Within Temptation. They've been huge in Europe for almost a decade, and it's about time they made it to America. The Heart of Everything exemplifies everything the band has worked toward since 1998. It is huge, epic, intense, beautiful, and spellbinding...pretty much everything you look for in a CD. The songs do not get tiresome even after dozens of listens (which I have done, believe me). And Sharon den Adel has the voice of an angel.
If you are a fan of Evanescence, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, or any other music featuring a gorgeous female voice featured against music that rocks, buy this now. You may simply listen to it, awed by its beauty (like during the ballad "Forgiven"). But do not be ashamed if you find yourself rocking out to it with your speakers turned up as loud as they go (especially on "The Howling" and "The Heart of Everything"). Enjoy!

Go Back To Silent Force.......2007-07-19
While I will admit it did disappoint me, if giving a chance this CD still rises above a lot of the other filth people are putting out these days (Evanesces to name one, even at her worse on this CD Sharon Den Adel still sings circles around Amy Lee (if you could sing in circles anyways)). The Howling was amazing a good start for the CD but then What Have You Done lays the disappointment on thick. I have noticed a lot of people don't like Frozen but personally I think it is a great song. Our Solem Hour is more reminiscent of Silent Force and all in all a good song. Heart Of Everything is also a great song and Cross is also good the rest is very medium to low quality when compared to Silent Force. Most of the time it failed to catch my attention. Still the CD grows on me so maybe one day I will love the CD but never will it surpass the greatness of Silent Force or the beauty of Mother Earth.
Within Temptation keeps getting better.......2007-07-16
This CD is great! Each CD Within Temptation releasese gets better and better. I discovered this group with their 2nd album The Silent Force and really loved it. This CD even exceeded my expectations.
A solid effort.......2007-07-15
I've been a fan of Within Temptation since I heard the amazing song "Angels" from their 2004 CD "The Silent Force." "The Heart of Everything," the Dutch metal band's fourth CD, shows definite progression while going into harder territory. This will be their first CD officially released in the U.S. and it does seem that the material is tailored a little more to American tastes than their previous works. That, however, is not necessarily a bad thing.
The focus of Within Temptation has always been lead singer Sharon den Adel. A natural untrained soprano who can sound amazingly like Kate Bush minus the screeching, Sharon still brings the angelic etherealness that is her trademark but shows off her lower range as well, particularly on "The Howling," "Final Destination" and "Our Solemn Hour," all of which stomp in the best possible way. I still don't quite understand why so many people believe that the first single "What Have You Done" sounds like Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life." It's true that the song is much more "commercial" than what WT usually does (although I still believe that "Angels" could have been a monster hit in America had it been marketed right) and both songs are essentially male/female duets, but the two songs sound nothing alike. If there is an Evanescence-like moment on the CD it's the closing song "Forgiven", which REALLY sounds like "My Immortal" both musically and lyrically. It's still a beautiful song, as is "Frozen," which in spite of a horribly overwrought video also has real American single potential. "The Heart of Everything" isn't perfect--the plodding "The Truth Beneath The Rose" and "All I Need" drag things down--but it's still one of the better CDs I've heard this year. WT got their first real U.S. exposure opening for Lacuna Coil this spring, but I have a feeling we're going to start seeing a lot more of them.

A Personal Favorite---BUT..........2007-05-05
...THIS SEMI IS COPY PROTECTED. To get around the copy protection don't install the utility program. It won't play in Media Player, but you can use other programs to do everything. This is very similar to Nightwish's Century Child. The band weaves numerous classical chord structures throughout the disc. The band is very talented and they really do push the limits here. The selections range from Ice Queen to In Perfect Harmony which almost sounds like Kenny Loggins' Return To Pooh Corner. Personally, I don't care for the last 2 bonus cuts, but otherwise this is a very compelling release.
Okay........2007-03-02
Not WT's best by any means, but at least this album has personality unlike "The Silent Force". Theres a few good songs such as "Our Farewell", "Ice Queen", "Mother Earth" and "Caged". But the rest of the CD does not follow. "Perfect Harmony" sounds like a pre-school, sing-along song, and "Never-Ending Story" sounds like a folk song gone horribly wrong. All in all, the album isn't terrible...but it isnt the best.
"Mother Earth".......2007-01-31
This is an excellent album. If you are a fan of "metal only" this is probably not for you. It is fully orchistrated and highly theatrical. The musical quality is fabulous. This is a theme album that will strongly appeal to affectations other than Christian. It's hard to put this group into a catagory. Theatrical Goth Metal is the closest I can come to a description. I personally love this CD and feel it is a very strong addition to my collection of Heavy Metal that I've been buying since 1964.
Remarkable Discovery.......2007-01-04
My wife has been after me to buy this for what must be two years now, since she heard the title track on the Matt Drudge Show. I bought it as a slightly late birthday present, and she has listened to it at least three times. Wonderful stuff.
what is this junk?.......2006-11-10
I'll give you the bottom line up front. Sharon den Adel, the lead vocalist, while very talented is not not suited for this type of work. She is blatantly flat or sharp at varying aspects of Within Temptation's songs including "Mother Earth." They do not even have very catchy riffs. Don't buy their album. If you like metal buy metal. If you like emo...kill yourself. If you want to be rocked, either make your own music or find something that does not suck on the surface as well as below it.

I completely agree with Rahul Jain........2007-07-25
On the surface, this is a pretty nice sounding album...very polsihed and pleasing to the ear. Below that, though, this is just a bigger disaster than The Silent Force. Within Temptation is apparently still attempting to create music that appeals to commerical masses in order to sell. Sure, there's lots of bombastic choruses, choir pieces, and standard song formats...but all of that doesnt make music. It makes something nice to listen to, sure, but not something someone can sit down and really emotionally connect with.
Within Temptation - better than Evanescence.......2007-07-20
This was the first Within Temptation CD I have ever purchased and the very first time I heard it I was absolutely amazed at the talent the lead singer has!!! I have always been a huge Evanescence fan, but I think I've found a new favorite! Amy Lee's lyrics all sound the same to me, as does her voice, whereas Within Temptation's lead singer portrays MANY different vocal styles! She seems much more talented and the music is much harder than anything Evanescence has done lately. I loved how they featured Keith Caputo of Life of Agony on "What Have You Done". They did an awesome job and sounded great together! All in all I LOVE this CD and I listen to it ALL the time! WAY TO GO WITHIN'TEMPTATION!!! And I can't wait for the next one!
This is symphonic metal.......2007-07-10
Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely a turn around from the band's previously released album and once again, the Dutch sextet takes Goth, metal and 14th Century renaissance music to a whole different level allowing it to perfectly accompany lead singer Sharon Den Adel's voice. In this album however, Sharon shows her versatility as a singer. There are times when she sings with immense amounts of power like in "The Howling" and others like a siren enchanting her subjects as in "The Cross". Sometimes she sings emotionally and sensitively like in the title track. The band has also enhanced "Our Solemn Hour" with clips from Winston Churchill's "Be Ye Men of Valor" speech making it sound much more 14th century.
The bands hit single "What Have You Done" with guest singer Keith Caputo has been a huge success all over Europe. With lyrics "I, I've been waiting for someone like you/But now you are slipping away...oh /Why, why does fate make us suffer/There's a curse between us, between me and you" reminds us of all those heartbreaks we have suffered when we thought we found the one. If you are new to the Goth/symphonic metal crowd or are just looking for something new, Within Temptation's The Heart of Everything is definitely for you.

One of the Best Albums to date.......2007-06-27
I really like this album. I highly recommend it. Musically it is awesome, the lyric are amazing, and you can really feel the passion in each song. There is not a weak song the album. Every track is great. My wife and I can't stop listening to it.
Unimpressive pop music.......2007-06-13
Unfortunately, like Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation has given in to the ... temptation (sorry, I had to) of making pop music that the masses will swarm to and just as quickly leave for the next thing. The songs I heard were completely forgettable. Lots of smash, crash, boom. No music. Granted, Sharon's vocals are more spectacular than ever. Not even a hint of the imperfection of the prior albums.
I saw them with Lacuna Coil a few weeks ago, and the songs they played off this album simply slid right through my head, and left me even more eager to get to their absolutely wonderful finale, the Mother Earth/Ice Queen combination. It was great to hear these songs played by a tighter, more mature band, with Sharon's voice at the level it has reached now. Stunning!

I know it's not going to happen but I think that a one to ten star rating system would make it far easier to rate an album more accurately. The reason I bring this up on this particular review is because I know that from time to time I too am guilty of giving a five star rating to an album that perhaps doesn't quite deserve it. However, this is not one of those times; this IS a five star album.
This album is first-rate in all respects, from Sharon's beautiful vocal performance and the guitars - which were all recorded in Holland, to the drumming - which was recorded in Belgium, to the full orchestra and choir - which were recorded in Russia, with each recording location being chosen for its individual capacity to contribute to this recording. It is obvious that no corners were cut in the production of this album, and it is clearly evident upon first listen, this album sounds magnificent. This album starts off brilliantly, has some even higher points along the way, and then ends even more brightly than it began. This is a very impressive and rewarding album, and has become one of my favorites. And for me this is very high praise to be sure, primarily because a band with a female singer will just about never make it to an album that I would rate as one of my favorites. However, this is certainly nothing against female singers, I just prefer the sound of a singer like Brian Johnson, Dio or Bruce Dickinson. (That doesn't make me gay does it?) And because of this preference if I had a single critical thing to say about this album it would be that at times Sharon's voice does get a bit on the high side. Conversely though, I am sure there are many that will enjoy this facet of her voice, and over and above any sound preference one might have, her vocals are always appropriate to the music. Furthermore, and far more worthy of mention is the fact that Sharon has an absolutely gorgeous voice, which easily rates as one of the best female Rock/Metal voices ever, not to mention she's pretty damn easy on the eyes. (Did I mention that I'm not gay? - Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Now, as is natural I suppose, I also feel compelled to compare this album to their previous album, 2001's 'Mother Earth', which some say it is better. However, I would like to make it known that I actually own both albums, and have for quite some time now. Consequently I have no reservations in telling you that in my opinion, with all things carefully considered, this album is without question a better offering. But by only a small margin though, as 'Mother Earth' is also a fantastic album, and a fantastical album I might add, that in comparison I would rate 4.5 stars. I won't get into the differences here, because the differences are substantial, and it would take a bit of explaining. Just trust me when I say buy this album first, and if you like it (and you will like it) then buy 'Mother Earth'. But just be prepared to hear something much more imaginary and grandiose. FYI, I also own WT's latest album, 2007's 'The Heart Of Everything', another exceptional album which I would also rate 4.5 stars. And believe me, I am not indiscriminately doling out praise or being liberal or charitable, these albums have earned their ratings. I think three rock solid albums in a row is an amazing accomplishment, and damn near unheard of, but believe or not WT has done it, as there is no filler to be found on any of these albums! And this amazing accomplishment certainly did not happen by accident, as Sharon said in an interview; "we do feel a lot of artistic pressure to write beautiful music" - "we are very critical of our music, a great deal of our ideas and songs are thrown away, and that's why it always takes us so long to write a new album". This is true, WT has only been releasing a new album once every three years. Which granted is a long time between offerings, but this should only be seen as something admirable, and deserving of praise, as releasing an outstanding album every three years is without question a whole lot better than releasing a marginal album every year.
In conclusion, this album, 'The Silent Force' is one of those albums that I just can't recommend more highly. Buy it now! I honestly don't see how anything but delight could be found. (Did I mention that I'm not gay?) :-)
A Deal at Twice the Price.......2007-04-13
This CD was worth every penny: soulful, operatic, and yet still grounded in fire-and-fury, balls-out rock. "Stand My Ground" is a beautiful testimony to strenth and individuality, "Aquarius" gains points for the mythology reference, and "Angels" simply stunning. If you need a reason to by the CD, listen to "Angels."
Exellent! Within Temptation's best album........2006-11-16
If you liked Evanescence's album "Fallen", then you will probably like this album. Good rock beats combined with soaring, operatic vocals to make a musical experience that I never get tired of listening to.
My first WT cd.......2006-07-07
Being a huge fan of gothic metal bands such as Elis, Midnattsol, Leaves' Eyes and of course Nightwish, I have always wanted to check out Within Temptation but their cds aren't available in the states at regular prices. Thankfully I received a copy of the band's most recent album "Silent Force" from a friend. I immediately took to the music right away. It definitely goes without saying that Sharon Den Adel has a gorgeous voice. I personally thought her delicate vocals were eerily reminiscent of both Sarah Brightman as well as Liv Kristine of Leaves' Eyes/formerly of Theatre of Tragedy. The music in general is an epic proportion of metal laced with sumptuous goth melodies which often veered off into opera territory at times. I loved all the songs on the cd. All of the songs had a nice balance between the heavy metal guitar riffs and delicate goth melodies.
boring.......2005-08-26
After their great success with "Mother Earth," it seems that Within Temptation is struggling to find a niche in the music world. I loved "Mother Earth" and its fusion of musical genres. I eagerly anticipated the group's next CD. I was disappointed in this newest release. There are no songs that leave any lasting impression to speak of, and the songs tend to sound boring and repetitive after the first 3 cuts. For those of you who loved "Mother Earth," don't bother buying "Silent Force."

Just incredible.......2007-05-16
THis has to be the best album ever... Every song is absolute superb:) From the very beginning of the first song, through the ending of the last is pure magic. I'm never getting tired of listening to this CD.
Hard Southern Rock At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09
Wow! What a great sophomore effort from the Showdown! Very little screaming, especially when compared to their debut, and that's a good thing. This band is clearly finding its voice. Edgier and harder than traditional Southern rock (Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, 38 Special), The Showdown reveals maturity beyond their years. Begining with the raucous Fanatics and Whores, possibly the best track on the CD, Temptation hits on all cylinders throughout. The fact this is Christian Rock should not sway you from purchasing. These guys hold their own against any secular band out there. The Showdown rocks!
From an experienced Showdown fan..........2007-04-27
New album = good. Old album = metal masterpiece.
Ok so the new album is a huge change from A Chorus of Obliteration, and I, like many others, was at first a little unsatisfied after the first listen. I'm gonna say that a few songs got me snakebit, but probably more of a python bite as opposed to the full on venomous Black Mamba bite that the A Chorus of Obliteration will strike you with. The name of the game for the Showdown has always been High-Voltage heavy metal. It stands true, just not quite as true as it did on the first album. The songs are incredibly slower than the first and there is definitely a lack of screams. That said, I am not one of those metalcore guys who only gets their kicks of screaming. BUT David Bunton has the best scream known to man. Hands down. So I was hoping for more of that on this album and was slightly disappointed in the lack of it. Fact is, David just has an amazing voice all around. Every song on this album is full of his voice which compliments the songs perfectly, like peanut butter and jelly. If any of you have ever seen The Showdown live, you have experienced getting snake bit, lightning bolts and all, and this new cd doesn't quite fit their live shows as well as A Chorus of Obliteration, but it still gets the job done. Now I find the cd very satisfying, it just took me a while to deal with the total change of pace. The cd is a great listen all the way through (with the possible exception of "It Drinks from Me" i still can't get into that one). I highly recommend this record, but not quite as much as I recommend the first one. Buy them both.
P.S. I don't mean to bash anyone else, but please for the love of Pete, do NOT believe what someone else said about there being a dash of Nickelback in there.

Aww Sh*t.......2007-04-25
Well, lookie here, we have yet another band that decided to go ditch their previous sound and make a boring radio rock album. Okay, here's the problem, I picked up The Showdown's first album, "A Chorus of Obliteration", because it was a catchy metal album with some excellent leads. It took me a while to get into, but I enjoyed it. But here, with "Temptation Come My Way", you might as well be another copy of Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil", which is just bland formulatic arena rock. I downloaded this CD, because I wanted to hear how it would be. Well, it was deleted from my hard drive after I listened to every track on this album. I am so disappointed with this CD. If you're into southern rock or radio music, you'll cream yourselves over this. Old Showdown fans, don't even bother.
Simply Incredible..........2007-04-03
This album starts out totally different than their first effort, actually, the whole cd is a masterpiece. Let me say it like this, If you took Metallica, Def Leppard, Randy Rhodes, Joe Satriani, Eddie VanHalen, AC/DC, Ozzy, Megadeath, Iron Maiden with a drop of Skynard, threw them all in a blender, cranked the volume and ripped the knob off you would have the sound that emits from these guys. They start with Whores and Fanatics and melt every track, including the heavy southern bluesy sound of It Drinks From Me, this is a powerful album with a great message to boot. Their cover of Kerry Livgren's "Carry On My Wayward Son" is a great move on their part to show the diversity of this album. This is a must if you are looking for a great Christian Metal Album that will completely rock your socks off. I could continue but get it for yourself, you will not be sorry.

To call Peter Gabriel's Passion a pivotal recording in the development of the world music genre would be a significant understatement. What makes Passion so undeniably huge is, of course, its global reach but also its expert handling of what could've easily become polyglot babble. Vocalists Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour, and Baaba Mal bring strong Middle Eastern and African voicing to the project, and Balkan textures come via the ney flute and doudouk. But Gabriel is the glue, offering electronic ambient flows between the multiple streams. Gabriel also brings something even less tangible: an awesome visual imagination that takes often seamless sounds and makes them impress the listener with picturelike colors and phrasing. This is, however, far more than an ambient global mix. To be certain, the intertwined rhythms stand out but always do so both unto themselves and as brushstrokes on a larger canvas. Never mind that Passion helped launch North American careers for N'Dour and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a stellar musical achievement by any standard. --Andrew Bartlett

Powerful and Timeless Soundtrack.......2007-07-17
I was a Peter Gabriel fan for years prior to the release of "Passion," but the arrival of this epic soundtrack was as close to a religious experience for me as an album can get. For years now, it has been the background to many of the most powerful and emotional moments in my memory. THE BEST music for... well, anything intimate or intense. For zoning out and letting your mind fly where it will. For curling up in a ball in the corner and allowing the music to give voice to your own pain and resurrection.
My five year old loves "Passion." I love how he hears something arresting in the middle of a track and will say "Oooh, mommy! Go back, go back quickly! Did you hear that?" His face just gets so thoughtful, and you can see the emotions of the music play over his face. It brings me such joy that we share this together. Thanks again, Peter Gabriel!
Changed my musical tastes forever.......2007-05-14
This album is really as good as everyone says. For those who are religiously inclined you may even feel God while listening to it. Believe me. Peter Gabriel had to have been inspired by a higher power while making it, bringing together a collection of music backgrounds as never done before, a musical 'patron saint'. In the process he has no doubt made the world a better place, by allowing dissimilar cultures to come together and share a common musical bond. To call it his Opus is a woeful understatement. In a hundred years this album will still be remembered as a defining achievement in music. If only we could bring the world together so well and so often, through music. This was my first foray into world music when I bought this in 1989 while in college. It was my first ever CD and I still have it today. Without a doubt it changed my tastes in music forever. I'm still dumbfounded why this man has not been elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Passion For The Passion.......2007-04-15
I often find "World Music" dreary when kept in its glass case. It becomes a preservation activity: record X from Y before He/She dies and their Music Is Lost Forever. Whilst this is worthy, it isn't necessarily worthwhile listening to something recorded only because it is going to rust away otherwise.
With "Passion" (the soundtrack to Scorcese's "The Last Temptation Of Christ"), Peter Gabriel succeeds brilliantly in creating a work indebted to World Musicians and yet stamped with his own mark: therefore the album lives and breathes as a work in its own right rather than a fossil of the past or a foreign country. He achieves this by using a strongly north African rhythmical approach coupled with the work of musicians on traditional Middle Eastern string instruments, always focusing on structure to build elements of texture into (rather than onto) each track. Exceptions to this are the stately choral version of "With This Love" and the soaring Western/Middle Eastern hybrid "It Is Accomplished".
With "Passion", Gabriel achieved the difficult task of giving voice to ancient music rather than reverentially keeping it in a case, to be merely caged and catalogued.
Superior to The Passion of the Christ soundtrack .......2007-02-16
I recently purchased both The Passion of the Christ soundtrack and Peter Gabriel's Passion. I really wanted to like The Passion of the Christ score, as I loved the movie. Regrettably, John Debney's music is so much like Peter Gabriel's superb Passion soundtrack, used in 1988's The Last Temptation of Christ that it becomes a farce. It even uses Gabriel's long-time collaborator, vocalist and double violinist Shankar, whose unique sound was also used on Gabriel's Passion. The producers also used a piece from Gabriel's Rabbit Proof Fence soundtrack for The Passion's 2003 teaser trailer. There's no doubt that Debney has copied Gabriel. Also the highlight of The Passion of the Christ is a theme virtually identical to one from John William's Born on the Fourth of July soundtrack.
So buy Gabriel's Passion over The Passion of the Christ, it is a magnificent score and far more original.
An Antti Keisala Comment: Also They Saw God.......2007-02-05
I have started this voyage of commentary by picking up the ones that are close to my heart, but now we're really arriving to the true centre. This album is perhaps the quintenessential album in my short life, the soundtrack of my life, only perhaps a few other albums (namely from Rubinstein or Pärt) slightly echoing the massive impressions it continually paints. As a Gabriel fan in general I still feel this is his best work, the most intimate testament to his skill not only as a musician, but also as a poet.
I don't like the Scorsese film for cinematic reasons alone, and the tapestries of sound drown the images of the film so thoroughly that what breathes through is the visual aspect of Gabriel's music instead of Scorsese's 'images'. And I have seen the film more than a few times (and am still waiting for the likes of Greenaway, Medem and Malick) to change the way we think of the subject cinematically. But how could I ever feel sad that I couldn't make myself like the film, when what it brought to me was an album like this?
Through the perspective of music history and especially through the evolution and migration of world music to the Western world this is already a significant album in itself. So it has merits. But what it has is the original spirit, the passion in the other sense of the word, to create, to express. And it has personal risk written all over it, made by an artist at the peak of his popularity and then taking the chance and making a small record like this. Once again something that I would already applaud for itself alone. This is passion for music, for the urge to create.
One wonderful property of great art is that it takes us along to participate in the creative process, paints an image of it and folds us around it as it encompasses our own space. "The Feeling Begins" and "A Different Drum" remain as the penultimate spiritual chants only succeeded by Gabriel's "Cloudless" in echoing the flowing rhythm of a ritual invocation, reaching from some artificially distant place inside our soul into our soul in this time and place. There is illusion, there is enchantment, there is magic, there is power, there are miracles. And it still, to this day, makes me believe. Not only is this the soundtrack of a whole life, it is, ironically, the soundtrack, a backdrop of inspiration, to any ideal full reading of the Gospels or Psalms I do. Uplifting, life-altering, everything that's from and in between. And I think of Whitmanian ease of being, as he whispers in 'Song of Myself': "Swiftly arose and spread around me the peace and knowledge/that pass all the argument of the earth,/And I know that the hand of God is the promise of my own,/And I know that the spirit of God is the brother of my own'. These kind of albums to which you can invest your own soul aren't experiences for experiences' sake, but things to cherish life for.
And I am thankful.
With best regards,
AK

A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulley

the perfect movie.......2007-03-10
My old Gene did it: the perfect movie, the perfect american history, the perfect music. Some people think musicals are "B" movies. I say them: look about the dream, the performance, the music.
Who can say what is beatiful? Look at faces of Gene and Stan during the shooting on the set: whole concentration and attention for everything.
This is a unique moment in their story, and in the story of cinema.
Unforgettable.
I LOVE MY FAVORITE SONG, AND THANKS TO THIS CD I CAN LISTEN TO IT ALL DAY LONG!!.......2007-01-28
I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)
Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16
Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.
Great CD.......2006-03-20
This is a great CD of music for your family to listen to. Our family enjoys it very much.
musical memories.......2006-03-14
I enjoyed this CD very much, as I remember seeing the movie years ago. I grew up watching MGM musicals and this was one of the best. I loved all of the wonderful songs that came from this movie. Great sound on this CD.

Within Temptation is one of the best bands that I have heard in years. With Sharon den Adel's hypnotic voice, you are pulled into the song. The enchanting symphony ignites the hauntingly beautiful vocals.
"Memories," plays across the soul and burns you with the desire to remember and embrace life.

Beautiful and empty........2007-06-20
So, here's the thing: After the release of Enter and Mother Earth, Within Temptation decided to release a more commercially geared album that's completely different from their two previous releases. Now, it's not a bad thing when a band decides to recognize a more mainstream crowd; it's only a bad thing when they go about it in the wrong way- sort of like Within Temptation inevitably did.
Now, this LP has some magnificently composed songs that feature the wonderfully angelic and professionally dynamic vocals of Sharon Den Adel...and granted, most people such as myself can pop it into the CD player and listen to the whole thing through, completely hypnotized by its beautiful sound.
Unfortunately though, if you peel back the layers, there isn't much else to be found. Within Temptation has seemed to sacrifice the personality of their songs, that can be heard in their previous releases, for an almost too perfect and beautiful sound and cliché lyrics.
Honestly, the fact that Within Temptation has taken most of the heart out of their songs doesn't bother me too much, considering there is still a beautiful sounding album on hand...but I definitely wouldn't suggest this album to you if you are looking for something filled with deep meaning and lyrics that a writer has put their heart, sweat, and soul into.
powerful and enchanting.......2007-03-17
Silent Force, by Within Temptation, is a very strong CD. It displays a delightful mix of rock and symphony. The vocals are very strong and beautiful.
Where has this band been all my life?.......2007-03-14
My roommate discovered this band for us by watching fan videos online. We instantly fell in love with Angels and that one song was the basis for me purchasing this whole CD for her for Christmas. We listened through it together for the first time and we are hooked. The beautiful lilting voice of the main singer is haunting and the instrumentation is quite amazing. I was utterly impressed and have recommended this to most of my friends, several of whom are as addicted as I am to Within Temptation.
