This album wasn't Lightfoot's breakthrough recording, but it was both a demonstration of the rocking electric turn most folkies would make after Dylan's revolution, and a commercially successful marriage of soulful, R&B sensibility with folk narratives. The title cut is probably engrained in the memory of anyone with an A.M. radio in the '70s, but 20 years later, it sounds suggestive, even bluesy. "Carefree Highway" perhaps excessively romanticizes the road, but less familiar tracks like "Watchman's Gone" and "Too Late for Prayin'" are convincing statements of Lightfoot's lyrical endurance. --Roy Francis Kasten

Is it too late for praying?.......2007-07-22

Some of the most beautiful songs of the twentieth century are on this album.
My favorite here is a song that chides God after laying out a litany of social problems and asks if it is too late for praying. "Lord abide let us stem the tide of broken dreams sometimes you seem to tell us its too late for praying. Is it too late for trying?" Quite poignant, and a tear jerker.

Sundown...Hands down.......2007-06-17

I first got into Gordon Lightfoot by picking up a Greatest Hits package. His smooth baritone coupled by his lyrical brilliance and great guitar work further encouraged me to pick up a few more of his studio albums. SUNDOWN is a fantastic album. Clocking in around 30 minutes, the album is a perfect blend of folk, blues,country,and story telling. The mega hits are included; "Sundown" and "Carefree Highway". This is one album I can listen to from start to finish and not be bored. Thats a true rarity for any artist. Take your pick; "Somewhere U.S.A", "Seven Island Suite", "Watchman's Gone", "Too Late for Prayin", this is simply Gordon Lightfoot at his best...enjoy!

Classic Lightfoot.......2007-06-02

It doesn't get much better than this. Although I love Gord's early music, and I love his recent music, it is his Sundown-era music that got me hooked back in the 70's, and what's on this CD is the reason why. You will not be disappointed.

Of all the recordings that Gord has done, these are my favourites. As fresh today, as they were in 1974. Thanks to his manager, I have had the good fortune of meeting The Lightfoot Band twice. All of them are really nice guys, that enjoy what they do. The songwriting stands alone among his works.

My New Look at Gordon Lightfoot.......2006-11-05

I bought several Gordon Lightfoot CD's recently in anticipation of seeing him concert. The only one I'd ever owned prior to that was "If You Could Read My Mind". That CD set the tone for the music I expected to hear from Gordon. What I found out after listening to several is that he moved through different periods, exploring different types of sound, using different instruments, even using his voice differently. While I will always like him best as a folk singer, his other "dips in to different pools" were interesting as well. Of all the CD's I bought, this one was my favorite and probably closest to my expectation of him as a folk signer, but with more sophistication. Incidentally, he performed several songs from this CD in concert, so I must not be the only one who thinks that.

I am so glad to have found this again!!!!!.......2007-07-28

My first LP of The Outlaws was a cut-out of "Hurry Sundown" at MusicLand at the local mall when I was 17. I was blown away by the LP's sound. The only southern rock I had heard was, well, I don't even recall. I listened to the album over and over and turned all of my friends onto it. Of couse, some of them didn't get it - they were only into acid rock. I was then, and still am, into every kind of music (except for contemporary, mainstream country, sorry). The Outlaws are a MUST for anyone who loves southern rock, classic rock, rock 'n roll, blues, great music, intelligent music, and of course my personal favorite, beer-drinkin', foot-stompin', hootin' music! Enjoy enjoy enjoy!

I want to let every person who has already written an intelligent, informative review that they have helped me make my choices on which CD's to purchase, especially for ANYTHING by the Oulaws. The Best Outlaws Album - Great Personnel, Great Songs.......2007-05-14

The Outlaws hit their peak with this album. They had the best personnel on this LP, and showed the polish of a band that's learned the ropes through 2 previous albums. Henry Paul, who was the main country-western influence, left the band after this album. On all subsequent albums, their 'twang' was gone and they deteriorated into being an average metal band with no market differentiator.

Billy Jones got more vocals on this album than on their first 2 albums, which is another good thing. In my opinion, Hughie Thomasson's vocals are average on a good day, and Billy had the unique Neil Young-like voice that could have really differentiated these guys (they way they differentiated Neil Young himself). Holiday is an amazing song, which really shows off Billy's vocal abilities. It should be mentioned among the ranks of Lynyrd Skynyrd's greatest rock anthems.

Not sure why The Outlaws don't get the airtime of Marchall Tucker, Allman Bros, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even the Pure Prarie League. They are at least as good, and maybe someday they'll get their due. Until then, this is an outstanding LP which plays like a "Best of" album -- not a bad track to be found!

Their best .......2006-02-16

Their first album was good and got radio play and had the classic Green Grass. Second album was ok. This was the classic. Even the 2 Billy Jones songs, usually shakey high voice ballads, are ok on this album. Everything else on this cd is excellent. A must have of southern rock.

A Southern Rock Pinnacle.......2005-09-15

Before Henry Paul (of Black Hawk fame more recently) left the Outlaws to form the very credible Henry Paul Band, he, Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones (RIP), Harvey Dalton Arnold, and Monte Yoho contributed what many feel is the quintessential Outlaws album: Hurry Sundown. The band had pulled off two incredible albums with the eponymous debut and the sophomore effort "Lady in Waiting", both of which featured music that would often lean more in the country direction (and done superbly) whereas "Hurry Sundown" began a deliberate shift to a harder rocking style. Of course, Country is a portion of the recipe that made Southern Rock great and it isn't completely forsaken here as such songs as the title track,"Hurry Sundown", "Hearin' My Heart Talkin'", "So Afraid" (sung by bassist Harvey D. Arnold; has banjo in it!), and Gunsmoke (sung by Henry Paul) all have strong country elements but are country with lots more "sting" in the guitar department. I think the departures of Henry Paul and Harvey Dalton Arnold later were incidentally the departure of the "country" element from the band and it virtually disappeared after this release, sadly. Hughie Thomasson is a guitar God, though, in my opinion and one of the most overlooked talents in the music world, and I, for one, am glad his stint with Lynyrd Skynyrd is over as the Outlaws are back out there kicking up dust and Paul, Thomasson and Co. are doing what they NEED to be doing: Outlaw Music!! Fortunately, Buddah Records, in association with Arista, re-issued the first 3 (and by far the best) Outlaw albums on CD back in 2001, I think, and they need to be YOUR collection!! Let the "Florida Guitar Army" take your breath and transport you to a time when the South had truly "risen again"!

Fantastic Album.......2005-08-11

A great album to have in your Southern Rock collection. I believe it's the last album Henry Paul was on before going solo...
Course it's great all the guys (less the great late Billy Jones) are on tour (2005-2006) for the 30th Anniversary Reunion Tour...great SHOW!!! Get the album...they're playing a few tunes of this one.

A collection of some of the best.......2007-01-10

Another chance to hear a compilation of some of the best Windham Hill pianists. Wonderful as always to hear Liz Story and a chance to add to my collection of her music the track 'The Sounding Joy'. With its cheerful precision it will lift your spirits on the most grey of days. Another excellent track on this compilation is 'For the Asking' by John R Burr - there is just not enough of his piano playing available

Fine sampler.......2007-01-04

I own two other Windham Hill samplers (Touch [Guitar] and Windows [Piano]), as well as some of their artists' individual recordings. This is easily the best of the piano samplers I've heard. The title led me to believe these were going to be romantic, slower-speed songs, but in fact they are upbeat and pleasantly bright--much more so than "Windows".

As with other Windham Hill samplers, I think you'll be surprised at how much the individual artists shine in their own rights: these pieces will not all blend together. Before long you'll notice that you can identify the artists by style and not just by remembering melodies.

My favorite piece on the album is Jim Brickman's "Jesu," an improvisation on the Bach chorale on "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring." It is a perfect example of Windham Hill's lighthearted, slightly jazzy, but always respectful music.

What's all the fuss, they ain't like us.......2007-06-22

I was just messin' around on Amazon, thinking I wouldn't find any R&F on CD but searching anyway, just to see what would come up. The three Ranky spank albums weren't released on CD for the longest time (the third one was actually on CD in the 80s but went out of print), until Rhino Handmade got in on the action a few years ago and I got a coupla copies of that great compilation (which included the awesome "Post Office" and "Klansman").

But now, lo and behold, what a great surprise, here it is on CD. This CD rules the universe, no doubt. First track to last. The best "cowpunk" ever ever ever. Get it or be deprived of the best music, maynnnn. Superfan Pam pities the fool who doesn't snatch this up.

Not rank, file under ROCK.......2007-05-21

I don't know where my LP went (but I still had the pre-recorded tape), it might have been stolen or maybe I sold it, but I'm sure glad this is now on CD.

Kind of punk, kind of country, but pure rock. My fave tracks are: Ananda Ruth, Conductor Wore Black and Rank and File. But don't take that the wrong way, all the songs a great. One disapointment, the lyric sheet is printed in such a small font, you might think that it is a legal disclaimer.

It's kind of like listening to Johhny Cash on speed. I find myself reaching for the volume knob very often as the CD plays. Play it loud and play it often. Your ears will thank you for it.

The only punk(ish)/country album ever? Clearly the finest........2006-01-13

Man, can these guys write music. The two brothers from the DILS, one of L.A.'s original punk bands got together with A. Escovedo from that very musical family if I'm not mistaken. This first album is head and shoulders better than their second album much in the same way that TELEVISION's Marquee Moon debut album is that much better than their second one.

And what a gem this is. I kept trying to see if there was some reissue version of this album with some sorta extra trax, either live or from some 7". No luck. Just 9 songs like the vinyl lp. The closest we get is two separate listings of the apparently same album on amazon.com which, well, didn't satisfy my music lust for obtaining more of this band's awesome songs. I have the album but I couldn't resist getting this CD.

I said for years that this album is too punk for country fans and too country for punk fans. After re-listening to it upon getting the CD (ok, ok, I'm busted, I rarely listen to my lps, least I finally bought a turn table after years of the vinyl just sitting around) I realized this isn't really punk. The only way it's punk is that the two brothers were formerly in a punk band. But it surely isn't straight country. I'm not sure how I can put my finger on it. All I know is, there's only one country act I like (of course, JOHNNY CASH) but if there were more bands that sounded like this I'd be all into them too.

The older I get the more it's clear that strong songwriting is a big deal, along with a fine voice. This band has it in spades. Really sing along songs. I just can't help myself. In fact, I'd put this album right in there with my other two most favorite albums where you basically can't help but sing along with almost every song: the MISFITS Walk Among Us and COCKNEY REJECTS Greatest Hits Vol. 1. I love music that sounds real American and RANK AND FILE totally captures that essense here. When John Doe and Excene do the KNITTERS getting their rootsy/country thang goin' it doesn't take me anywhere. This, this is perfection. Robust, stompin' really, and beautiful harmonies. Before I forget I gotta turn my dad onto this. He's 80. He loves good music but grew up with big band but turns out he loves NEIL YOUNG (ok, acoustic) and is real impressed with the honest presentation of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.

You Need This.......2005-10-27

Before the Americana/No Depression music came out, there was Rank And File. Back then it was known as Cowpunk (whatever that meant) as the Kinman Brothers, formerly leading the Punk band Dils, moved to Austin and recuited then unknown Alejandro Escovedo and Slim Evans and became Rank and File. On the album, side one had some heavy hitters such as Amanda Ruth (later covered by the Everly Brothers), Glad I'm Not In Love, and the band named Rank And File to which they throw in part of Ernest Tubb's Thanks a Lot to really throw a curve and The Conductor Wore Black to end things out on a classic note. On the title track Sundown, Tony Kinman's voice echos Johnny Cash, although on further listening, probaly inspired upcoming Nashville singer Josh Turner (probaly not but would it be amazing if Josh Turner had a copy of Sundown tucked there between the Randy Travis and Johnny Cash records in his collection), and thought the next three songs are pretty good, the album ends with the rocking Coyote. Soon afterwards Jason And the Scorchers would surface with their Fervor EP, which later Uncle Tupelo would later incoporate both styles into their No Depression leadoff, but Sundown was pioneering stuff, again falling into the too rock for country and too country for rock radio, which lead some lucky listeners to hear it on public radio (to which I heard the Rank And File song first and was knocked out and it took forever to find the album)

Sadly good things don't seem to last and Alejandro Escovedo left to form the equally just as good True Believers whose albums were reissued on Rykodisc and have fallen out of print but you can still get it fairly cheap but that's another story. Rhino Handmade paired Sundown and Long Gone Dead a limited edition called The Slash Years and copies went by fast. However rejoice in the fact that Collector's Choice has heard the calls and have reissued both Sundown and Long Gone Dead on seperate CDs.

Sooooo, if you want to hear one of the best albums of the 80s, better than anything that MTV ever promote, and if you want to hear the beginnings of Americana, you need Sundown. It's that simple.

Required Listening..........2004-01-23

Well, it ought to be...This is quite possibly a perfect big band album. Anyone who likes Jazz, thinks they might, or anyone who Hates Jazz should have this disc. If you Love Jazz, You'll Love it more, If you Hate Jazz, It'll change your mind! From the best version of Moonglow since Benny Goodman's to the ROCKIN' The Claw, you will listen to this disc over and over and over. In fact, you might want to just go ahead and buy two copies, cause you'll wear out the first one. Terry Gibbs is possibly the most underrated Jazz player in history. His band is simply amazing on every track, and his cool swing will make you rethink what you thought cool was. (In case you can't tell, I get really excited by this recording.) In my humble opinion, I think everyone ought to own this disc, as well as parade Terry around on our shoulders for his greatness as well as courage in putting and keeping this band together AFTER the Big Bands had died out. Its my understanding that during some of the particularly dry patches he paid the band out of his own pocket just to keep the band together. You may never hear a tighter band, or one that is having as much fun! BUY THIS NOW!!!!!!

Underrated album.......2007-02-05

This is not one of their more well known albums, but it's one of my favorites. If you like good southern rock, you'l love this.

"Hurry Sundown" alone makes this 2 for 1 CD worth the money.......2006-10-25

You'll get debates as to which Outlaws CD is their best. Some will stand by their earliest efforts that laid the groundwork, and what future recordings would be judged by. And to be fair songs like "Waterhole; Knoxville Girl; Freeborn Man" and "Green Grass and High Tides" are tough acts to follow. But in my opinion, Their most solid beginning to end record to listen to, as well as the best produced is "Hurry Sundown." From the opening guitar strums of "Gunsmoke", through the ending guitar licks of the mood setting "Man of the Hour", "Hurry Sundown" is a variance of well written songs, and well produced music, courtesy of Bill Syzmick (producer of quality Eagles records) that showed a band confident in putting out a variety of songs that tilt in the more contemporary direction for the most part, as opposed to the powerful attacking guitar assaults of some of their earlier music. That's not an affirmation or condemnation on either approach, merely a fair contrast to let one know what to expect. "So 'Fraid" and "Heavenly Blue" are two of my all time favorite Outlaw tunes and I challenge one not to find themselves tapping their toes or singing along to some extemely catchy tunes. But "Hurry Sundown; Hearing My Heart Talkin'" and "Holiday" are solid Outlaw classics whose opening cues when played in concert excite many an Outaw fan. The solo "Hurry Sundown" CD I own is a fabulous transfer and great sounding CD. I can't speak for the recording sound quality for "In The Eye of the Storm", but do know the CD itself, while not up to previous Outlaw standards, isn't a bad record. It can be said that the writing is a little lazier than in the past. Though "The Lights Are On But Nobody's Home" and "It's Alright" are catchy tunes, they are the polar opposite of aforementioned songs from some of the earliest Outlaw songs- very repetitive in lyrics and guitar work. "Long Gone" is a powerfuly sung, guitar attack worthy or recognition. And their cover of Elvis Costello's "Miracle Man" is a catchy rendition that carries definitive Outlaw flavor. But while those songs are the ones I tilt to the most, added along with the remaining songs, it's just not the full throttled quality recording Outlaws fans grew accustomed to. Given that and things I've heard about the quality of the recording of that segment of this 2 for 1 CD, it's hard to give it a ringing endorsement. But if the quality is even a 7 out of 10 for "Storm", with "Hurry Sundown" there to pick up the slack (a 5 star CD in its own right) the combination gives a strong sampling of the Outlaws evolution from the mid 70s to the mid 80s and for the price available is a worthy purchase.

Unremarkable.......2006-06-02

The Outlaws give it another try, and come up short once again. Only a slight improvement over their previous release (Playin' To Win), the material on In the Eye of the Storm is largely forgettable. Only a few tracks are worth repeated listening (It's All Right, Blueswater and Too Long Without Her, all of which harken back to the band's early glory days). A couple of tracks show promise (Dance With Me and I'll Be Leaving Soon) but never quite seem to gel. Maybe it's because they sound like Burton Cummings is singing them?

Once again, though, the CD sound quality is substandard its almost criminal, rendering another poor album virtually unlistenable.

In the Eye of the Storm/... Revisited.......2003-07-17

Dear fellow Outlaw fans. I feel I was a bit harsh in my earlier review and wanted to take the opportunity to lighten-up a little.
For the most part, the first eight tracks of "In The Eye Of The Storm" are mixed fairly well. When listening to the original album, I was quickly reminded this was not one of the better produced efforts to begin with. However, track 9. "I'll Be Leaving Soon", which is one of my favorite tracks was not remastered well at all. Once the acoustic guitar opening fades and the song starts to kick at the 53-55 second mark, you can tell an album was used as the reccording source. Listen for the bump sound.

The Hurry Sundown tracks are just fine. All in all, the CD would be a good addition to any Outlaw fan's collection. But it would still be nice if the original masters were used for "In The Eye of The Storm" and "Playin To Win". To any record label thinking of issuing " The Outlaws, Los Hombres Malo 1982 release in the future, do us fans a favor. Please use the original Arista master tapes!

In the Eye of the Storm/... [IMPORT].......2003-07-16

Most Outlaws fans including myself would agree "In The Eye Of The Storm" was not one of their best. However, it still has some nice tracks, and we have waited so long for it's release. Similar to Playin To Win" release by same record label, what you have here is a 24 bit remastering from an LP. If you listen very carefully, you can even hear a few nicks, pops and bumps on some tracks. This is in reference to the songs from "In The Eye of The Storm" tracks, not Hurry Sundown.

The vocals on some of the tracks are distorted & scratchy, especially when the letter "S" is involved in any phrase. If you do not own a copy of the album "In The Eye Of The Storm" or Hurry Sundown on CD, then go for it. If you already own In The Eye on LP,and Hurry Sundown on CD, save your money. It's really a shame to pay good money and not get the quality re-issues we deserve.

I've got to admit, when I bought S Club Junior's 'Together,' I was a bit disappointed. The lyrics were bland, most of the songs sounded childish, and the juniors' voices hadn't matured and sounded like what they were, eight thirteen year olds singing S Club 7 karaoke. So, as you can imagine, when I popped 'Sundown' into the CD player, I wasn't expecting much. Man, was I surprised...

1. Fool No More - This thumping, fast-paced disco track is the perfect way to start the album. Mature lyrics and great vocals set the tone for 'Sundown.' This track sounds like something Rachel Stevens might sing, a super infectious flashback to the eighties. 10/10
2. Sundown - This is, in my opinion, is one of the best songs on the album. Electro pop mixes with cool beats, a mega-catchy chorus, and great singing to provide what should have been a number one single. It's almost too good for its own good, you listen to it so many times it gets annoying, yet you still can't manage to turn it off...1,000/10
3. Don't Tell Me You're Sorry - Eh. I think this was a weak single choice. It's trying to combine disco and R&B, and it just doesn't work. The vocals are kind of weird, and the sad part is, it's not even very catchy. 5/10
4. Love to the Limit - Reminds me of an S Club 7 track. Nothing groundbreaking here, but it's a catchy little pop tune. 7/10
5. Turn the Lights On - Here we go, a standout to pick up the pace after those two rather lackluster songs. It starts off slowly, and then suddenly blasts into an irresistible chorus. Great! 10/10
6. Searching for Perfection - Another gem! Sounds just like a catchy disco jam from the seventies. 9/10
7. One Thing I Know - VERY S Club 7. A laid-back, peppy track for those hot summer days with the convertible top down. It's just too infectious! 9/10
8. Sail On Through - Yet another spectacular track. The bridge and chorus are both fantastic, and the harmonies are virtually flawless. 10/10
9. Big Fun - Of course, every song can't be perfect. Everything here is boring. This should have been replaced with either one of the b-sides 'Sloop Upside' or 'Wherever Your Heart Beats.' 3/10
10. The Day You Came - What a difference from 'Big Fun!' This is a giant, memorable electro track. Worth putting on repeat! 10/10
11. Pretty Boy - Warning, sappy ballad alert! However, it's so addicting, you can't help but love it. The vocals sound exactly like Hilary Duff. (I don't know if that's good or bad...) 10/10
12. Rush - A TRUE standout. There's only one word to describe this one, WOW. Super mature sounding song with a chugging electro beat and an AMAZING chorus! Superb! 1,000/10
13. I Just Came to Dance - Not as amazing as 'Rush' or 'Sundown,' but still good. The only problem is, it's just a bit boring until the chorus. 8/10
14. Drawn to You - The exact same sort of song as 'Pretty Boy.' The two should be released together as a single. It's almost too sugary and sweet, but it still manages to be great. Calvin sounds awesome. 10/10
15. Tears On My Pillow - Kind of a nice way to end the album. I think an original song, such as one of the b-sides, should have been in its place, but nevertheless, it's upbeat and charming. 8/10

Overall, 'Sundown' is a huge step in the right direction for S Club 8. They should have stuck to this material, instead of adding five more members, becoming a new band, (I Dream) and releasing a relatively boring pop album (Welcome to Avalon Heights). Snap this one up quickly, it's a diamond in the rough that's not worth forgetting.

These kids are just awesome, all the songs are really really good, my favorites are I Just Came to Dance and Day you came. they're more disco than before, and it's just great!!! I love this Cd, I'm always listening to it. Buy it and you won't regret.

Come on.. i don't get you guys, if you don't like the song or the member, why on earth do you spend your money on buying their disk or spending your time to listen to it and more.. reviewing it?
Well... i won't make the arque gets more bigger... and one thing to the mr or miss kid's review below me.. how on earth did you know if he's from buenos aires? Cause i'l tell you one thing, buenos aires is the capital city of Argentina and it's part of latin america... If you don't know, most of Latin america's countries mother languange is Spanish and that's including Argentina. So, if carlos is really from Buenos Aires, it's not surprising that he speaks spanish. What he says is that he likes the album, most of the songs are good, except the other people songs, like pretty boy. But he says not to mind it. And what he prefer the most is the songs he says..

Okay... back to my opinion.
I think Sundown album is much more mature than the together album. All the songs are catchy and good to dance or sings with... They aren't very hard to understand and their voice is clear... The beat that they use are perfect for all the pop fans out there.
My favorite tracks are Fool no more, sundown, Don't tell me you're sorry, love to the limit, turn the lights on, searching for perfection, one thing i know and i just came to dance
So.. to all rock and all fans... i don't recomend you guys to buy this..
But to all pop fans.. BUY IT, this is one good album...

This stinks like off eggs. Carlos honey, WE CANT UNDERSTAND A THING YOU ARE SAYING! i'll just interpret it to say "S club 8 stinks like rotten faeces! I think these children are so annoying, nothing can describe their annoying behavious, their ugly little faces make me puke!

An all-star rythm section accompanies Mr. Burrell on another great album. Lots of diversity on this slightly low-key album, with ballads, Latin-esque tunes, and of course, lots of swing. I definately recommend it for Burrell fans.
