It's been over six years since Schnauss introduced the world to his wonderful blend of electronic textures and shoe-gazer aesthetics featured on his debut, "Far Away Trains Passing By". It's also been four years since "A Strangely Isolated Place" hit shelves in his native Germany and cemented his place among the elite electronic artists. That album combined the early 90's Creation Records' sound of pioneering acts like Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine with modern electronic tapestries. "Quicksand Memory" brings Ulrich's musical drought to an end, featuring two new tracks and Robin Guthrie's re-workings of two of Ulrich's most celebrated songs, "Gone Forever" and "On My Own". Look for the upcoming full-length, "Goodbye", in June.

Sinking in "Quicksand".......2007-05-23

Finally, Ulrich Schnauss is coming back. The electro-shoegazer artist has a new album coming out, and in anticipation of it, has turned out a "Quicksand Memory," which mingles his customary shimmering electronic expanses and dreamy ambient melodies.

It kicks off with "Look At the Sky," a shimmering wintry song that constantly expands in a flurry of ringing guitars and murmuring female vocals. It's a bit like listening to angels in a rainstorm, which becomes a thunderstorm in the lo-fi-ish, melodiously chaotic "Medusa."

Then it's back to the mellow soundscapes in "Gone Forever," which sticks to ambient electronica and some gentle cycling guitars, never quite going anywhere. And finally there's "On My Own," a rather peculiar mixture of wavering, creaking synth and meandering melodies and vocals. It always sounds ready to go where somewhere, but never does.

Basically "Quicksand Memory" exists to whet the appetite for Schnauss's next full-length album, which is going to drop pretty soon. And it does what it's supposed to, while showing that Schnauss is sticking to what he does best -- ambient melodies and gentle electro-dreampop, which lulls without becoming boring.

The album is awash in a gentle, smooth, warm wash of keyboard, which can swell out to epic proportions, tremble coldly, or simple ooze along pleasantly like a sonic lullaby. It can even get vaguely scratchy and angular, especially with paired with drum machines and those cycling, echoing guitars. And Schnauss weaves in some soft, murmuring vocals that never say much more than "aaahhhh ahhhhh."

The "Quicksand Memory" EP is a good lead-in to Schnauss's new album, and a good introduction to this electro-showgazer's dreamlike work. Definitely worth hearing, despite its brevity.

Classic.......2007-04-17

This band came out of the hardcore scene of the late 80s that gave us Shelter, Texas is the Reason and others. Quicksand were a whole lot better though. Slower paced with a heavy bass line, dont know why but they remind me so much of Led Zepp how this band never got a wider audience is beyond me.

Even 13 years later, this album still rocks. It's one of those rare masterpieces where EVERY track rocks. A must for any collector of heavy, edgy, early 90's post-hair-band metal. Truly, every song is awesome. Baphomet is one of the scariest songs I've heard. Still gives me chills - and it's the 10th track!

Better and more urgent by the year- DESERT ISLAND 20.......2006-02-23

Every 6 months or so I just HAVE to put this on again. All of todays heavies owe so much to the punch, structure, and succinctness of the crossover perfected here. Formed out of the ashes of Gorilla Biscuits (from Minneapolis), who were pretty lean and fast as a punk outfit- they shone well on the debut ep.

Then wrote their 'genius' effort here, slowing the focus of punk into sheer emotional power , with each song shining warmly like old friends in battered leather jackets smiling broadly to reveal teeth lost to loud music.

I was soooo lucky to catch them in Milwaukee, touring with Deftones in an effort to regroup. I had seen them once before, but I thought they were long gone. Playing a huge old Eagle's Club ballroom-THEY WERE SO MIGHTY, it was like a drug. The kids were drop jawed wondering where the rock roundhouses were coming from, seamlessly running through this whole album and a few from 'compression'. I risked life and limb to toss the kids around a bit for old times sake.

And then they were gone.

Full-Length Debut From Quicksand Metallic And Raw...4.5 stars..........2005-12-15

Quicksand formed in New York in the late 80s, and while they released a minor self-titled ep early on, it was this early 90s debut that turned the band onto the metal/punk scene. While many would want to throw Quicksand into the punk-rock scene, they actually lean more towards metal with some hints of punk escapism thrown in. They lean more towards hard guitars and pummeling, crushing rhythms, while vocalist/guitarist Walter Schreifels has enough angst in his voice to fit in nicely. And other band members, Tom Capone-guitar, Sergio Vega-bass,and Alan Cage-drums, create dense walls of noise. Tracks like the hard-hitting "Dine Alone" and the dense metal of "Fazer" showcase Quicksand's more abrasive side. "Omission", from the band's debut self-titled ep, was a hint of the metallic sound that dominates this and the band's last album, the well-crafted frenzy of MANIC COMPRESSION. Elsewhere, "Head To Wall" pummels the listener, and "Lie and Wait" is another fist-pumping anthem.

If you're looking for a dose of good metallic rock, then SLIP and MANIC COMPRESSION should satisfy any metal fan. Creating some of the most influential music during that time, Quicksand sadly went their separate ways after a brief reunion in the late 90s. But with this album, Quicksand most definitely created some smart and well-crafted rock-metal.

Helmet + Fugazi= Quicksand.......2005-11-14

Amazing band. I honestly can't stand all the garbage that constitutes as "post-hardcore" or "emo" these days. Bands like Thursday, Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday(pretty much any band with "day" in the title) cannot and will not ever hold to Quicksand. On this cd you won't hear wussy guitars and whining vocals screaming about ex-girlfriends. Instead, you'll be treated to strong and assertive vocals and quality songwriting. Highly recommended

Dustbowl country, haunting percussion improvisations, and rugged rock & roll are roughly hammered together on the fourth album from Califone. Salvaged from the ashes of Drag City's supremely haunting blues travellers Red Red Meat, this shape-shifting group--built around the core duo of Ben Massarella and Tim Rutili--is a hard to pin down. "Your Golden Ass" is an inelegant, leathery garage drone that sounds like the Modern Lovers collectively overdosing in an alley on the Lower East Side. "Horoscopic Amputation Honey" rolls mandolin, cello, and sparse electronics into an offbeat, yet oddly hymnal campfire sing-along, while "Cat Eats Coyote" is an on-the-spot foray into junkyard percussion and ghostly sax. All these stylistic skips mean that Quicksand/Cradlesnakes feels like a contradictory mix of city savvy and rural roughness, extravagant technology and salvage-store poverty. Anyone that felt Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Calexico's Feast of Wire should have been more experimental will be well-served by this exploration of marginal Americana. --Louis Pattison

Quicksand/Cradlesnakes.......2007-01-20

With Califone's seemingly heterogeneous mix of country, post-rock and found sound avant-gardism, one could say that the band has too much of a corner on their market to brook any real competition. Still, it's hard to imagine anyone doing it better. Like all of Califone's releases thus far, "Quicksand/Cradlesnakes" rides on the back of frontman Tim Rutili's folky, country-fried guitar work, but he allows the experimental Chicago influence to creep in with clanking percussion and all manner of odd, grimy noises. On those songs, the figurative clash between oldness and modernity is apparent, and quite poignant, but Rutili can still write a beautifully spare, man-and-his-guitar torch song like "Stepdaughter," soundly beating Iron & Wine at his own game. In its tensest moments and its most plaintive ones, with every creaking sigh and earnest strum, "Quicksand/Cradlesnakes" mirrors the intricacies of modern America with unrivalled grace.

Once when I was a sailor, I saw something in the water, something...unusual, mystical...it put me in a trance of sorts. I told the other sailors aboard, "Oy, over here, there's some sort of unusual somethings in the water down here!" They came a running, a skipping, singing, all the things sailors love doing. So we end up getting this thing out of the water, its a stranged shape treasure box with a lock. I find a sledgehammer near by and smash the lock. Slowly I bend down...the sailors anxiously waiting to see what is to be found in this contraption. I open it, gold light comes pouring out, and in this box...Califone's album Quicksand/Cradlesnakes perfectly presereved. I take it out, give it a lookover, amazed at its beauty, and hand it to the captain. He takes his pipe out of his mouth and says the first thing he's said since 7 years back, "Califone...my god, I thought...I thought..." And then he got down on his knees and put his hands up to his face and sobbed for what seemed like an eternity, an eternity of beauty.
20 minutes later we all go into the room where the only cd player is. I take the cd out of the case, place it in the stereo, and put my finger up to the play button...I look back to all the sailors, they are saying to me, "Come on, push play, hurry." So I push it, and what hits my ears is an instant orgasm. We have the cd on replay and listen to it for hours and hours all sitting down just staring blankly.
It is now one year later and I still play this album and it is still as wonderful as it was on the ship one year ago. So please, if you have to steal this thing...do it, if you go to jail for stealing, it was definantly worth it. Enjoy my friends, enjoy...

Experimental Folk, but don't let the genre deter you..........2004-11-28

Califone are a strange band to really pigeonhole. They are kind of folky, but that is mostly because they play acoustic. But they are never afraid to incorporate other instruments, whether it be unusual percussion, banjo, feedback, etc. But they occasionnally make some creative and fascinating music, and this album is their best one.

Unlike on other albums, the experimentation is in the instrumentation, rather than the structure. Some of their earlier songs seemed half-baked, awkward, or quirky without a reason to be so. This changes on this album. The percussion on "Michigna Girls" is jarring...it's almost Asian in its style. But it isn't distracting, but rather gives warmth to an already great song. "Yer Golden Ass" may not be the smartest track, but the whiplash slide guitar is a great touch. Many of the songs are at the same time familiar and unorthodox, which is why a lot of bands compare Califone to Wilco. They are not the same band, for as this record shows, the band still is a little sloppy and not all of the ideas are seamlessly integrated. But when this band is on, they can be great, and this album is the best place to hear their music.

This is one of my favorite albums. Simple, yet complex. Gentle acoustic strumming with wonderful feedback in the background. How songs like "Vampiring Again" never get pub amazes me. Great song writing, great production, great musicianship. Califone has it all.

Red Red Snakes.......2003-10-03

I've seen Califone playing in Milan, last springtime, promoting Quicksand:Cradlesnakes and I must admit they surprised me. I'm a fan of Red Red Meat's music and thought I was going to listen to a sort of reunion with a little bit difference in the mood from the original band. I was terribly wrong. Califone's gig was psychedelic beyond imagination. I was lucky to see them during the soundcheck, when they played a 15 minutes version of Million Dollar Funeral to setup their amps and the main master volumes on the mixer. Well, first thing I did next day was to pay a visit to my fave music shop in town and grab Quicksand:Cradlesnakes from the scaffold. I'm listening to that album since then, and today it's October, 3rd. Great folk songs and psychoblues diversions, a voice so soft you can't help to bend your ears to the stereo and let yourself going deep into the woods of notes and percussions. My rank is a plain 8.

Not bad.......2007-05-05

Not bad but a bit of a let down after their first album slip. Sound quality is pretty poor and the vocals are realy muffled. The band sound like they are playing on the other side of the building. Some pretty good tracks on this one though just poor sound quality lets it down.

Good, slightly obscure CD.......2006-05-15

Story is the band broke up around the time this was released, which is probably why these guys never reached the stature of bands like Soundgarden - in other words, on the radio but still good. I got this real cheap about 10 years ago and it still rocks.

Good But Not "Slip".......2006-02-21

Quicksand's 1992 effort "Slip" is a classic and I highly recommend it. However, I wish I could say the same for Manic Compression. Though it has just a handful of good songs, it just does not measure up to Slip. I bought this when it came out in 1995 and all I could remember is how disappointed I was and even more when they broke up. There are not many memorable tracks on this and the production is just sub-par, which I was surprised to see due to the fact Don Fury (Slip, Warrior Soul, Helmet) produced it. Walter Schreifels and Tom Capone are excellent songwriters and veterans of the New York Hardcore scene. Their combined resume is impressive with Youth of Today, Bold, Gorilla Biscuits, Quicksand, CIV, Rival Schools, Handsome and Instruction, all of which are worth checking out. These guys seem to get record deals with ease but the problem is these great bands never last. This might not be Quicksand's best but it is much better than most bands around today that call themselves hardcore.

I bought this album ten years ago. 1000 albums later there is still no equal by any other band. This album will give you brain damage. Which is probably why my review isn't very coherent. This album had sex with your mom. There are tiny infant eardrums waiting to be exploited by this album. Think fugazi, helmet, snapcase, glassjaw, old soundgarden, slayer, unsane, unecessary violence, pro death bumperstickers, unrest, rioting in the streets, turn your amplifiers up to 11 and cry yourself to sleep. You just found nirvana. oh yeah this goes double for slip.

A tired remake of "Slip".......2005-07-28

For some reason the band had the sophmore blues with this recording. It just seems like a tired rearrangement of "Slip." Personally, I like it but I would rather listen to its predecessor.

Quicksand Rocks!.......2005-10-01

Simply said, this band rocks! It has a more raw sound than Manic and Slip, but it is nevertheless it's the sound of the band you love. I'm sad to say that there are only 4 tracks. If you're a fan, pick it up!

Changed the HC scene forever.......2003-03-26

This 7" (cause thats how everyone remembers it.. this came out before CDs were popular for small releases) changed how just about everyone in the HC scene thought about music.

Revelation up to this point had put out a pretty consistent roster; YOT, Gorilla Biscuts, Chain of Strength, Bold, Judge, etc. All fast hardcore with straight-edge lyrics. This changed all that. Melodic, lyrically clever, but with HC names and style this really revolutionized everything. Suddenly you didn't need heavy, heavy guitars to break through into the audience. You didn't need the Mike Judge raspy voice to get heard.

Listening to it today, unlike much of the music of the era, this still holds up. It should hold a proud place on any HC fan's shelf.

A Great Supplement to 'Slip'.......2001-07-31

If you liked their full release 'Slip', you will like this album. The sound quality is not as good as 'Slip', but this album was released a few years before it. 4 1/2 stars.

New Noise for the 90's.......2000-04-04

Although the CD format was released in 1994, the original version on 7" vinyl came out in 1990. And let me tell you, this was truly a revolutionary recording, both for the label it was released on (Revelation Records) and for the audience it was marketed to (SxE Hardcore Scene). Quicksand set an entirely new precedent with this 7" and in the process changed our definition of how hardcore music could sound. With slow tempos, progressive rhythms, elaborate guitar solos, and melodic vocals, Walter and company constructed a style that was unlike anything else. And yet they managed to capture an intensity that equaled, if not surpassed, any of the traditional hardcore outfits of their day, which is precisely why my friends and I were so enamored with them. Quicksand proved that it was possible to play innovative, challenging music and still maintain the energy that made bands like Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits so captivating.

It is to this day one of my favorite records, and in my humble opinion it is Quicksand's single best release.

This CD is really good. The musical styles range from country to blues to rock and although I am not a huge fan of blues and country, I still enjoyed this CD a lot! This record will help you broaden your taste in music while giving you listening pleasure all along the way. I would recommend this to any potential listeners.

Quicksand Blues.......2006-01-01

From a man better known for his success as a wine importer and merchant comes this CD, all nine tracks written by Lynch and all great songs in the blues tradition and performed by the likes of Boz Scaggs, Rick Fataar and Alvin Youngblood Hart. A thorough delight and not to be missed.

Great album - POOR production.......2005-09-02

This album is excellent, melodic with lots of vocal harmonies, organ and great guitar playing. The songs are leaning towards progressive rock with songs that are both complex and still very memorable and lighthearted. It's full of joy and high spirit, manifested in great, driving rhytms, powerful melodies and memorable choruses. I tried to get the Si-Wan edition but it never was available at my local record store. So I was very pleased to see the re-release of this nice album in a digipac, on the Breathless/Abraxas label. Oh how disappointed I was when I heard the first seconds though - a very bad sound. Obviously this is a job of a poor transfer from a vinyl that is very scratchy in places. Especially noticeable in quiet passages but actually the constant hiss and scrathes are really disturbing throughout the album! I really must send out a warning here - get the Si-Wan edition if you can! Ok so this digipac is looking really good and comes with a booklet but believe me - its the MUSIC that matters, right? It is really boring that these kind of bad cd releases constantly come out all the time still. One would think that by now in 2005, people would manage to do a tolerable mastering or transfer to CD. But not in this case. And the lyricspages inside the booklet are mixed up also. A really bad job.
So, the rest is up to you... I for sure, will sell my copy and go for the Si-Wan edition or some other expensive import edition that has good sound.
