New Jersey white-trash visionary and Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf spent most of the '80s and '90s dropping acid, popping pills, inhaling pungent weed, and churning out sludgy, drug-induced paeans to hedonistic abandon. And when he finally came down from his cosmic cloud, he realized the rest of the world was as messed up as he was. Addiction loomed everywhere--for power, money, and sex--and all Wyndorf could do was take out his notepad and marvel at the chaos. Monster Magnet's fourth album is a seething document of decay, corruption, and consumerism. "When you get tired of their crap, baby / Move over here and maybe buy some of mine," he shouts on the title track, while crashing power chords, throbbing bass, and tumbling drum fills resonate around him. Musically, Powertrip is less rambling and psychedelic than the group's past albums, owing as much to such confrontational garage rockers as the Stooges and Blue Cheer as to Black Sabbath. It's also more experimental. "Crop Circle" roars with blowtorch guitars and a circular groove; "19 Witches" and "Your Lies Become You" shiver with twanging surf-punk guitars; and "Space Lord" buzzes like a swarm of angry wasps. A powerful trip for sure, or as Wyndorf says in "Bummer," "If you want to spank your demons and make them pay. Baby I'm your man of the hour." --Jon Wiederhorn

5 out of 5 stars One of the best heavy music records of the 90s........2007-05-21

Admit it, when you first heard the opening, chugging riffs of "Spacelord" your socks were rocked off. Mine were, too. I think this was my favorite cd of my junior and senior year of high school. Every song is a highlight, but "Crop Circle", "Powertrip", "Spacelord", "Bummer", "See You In Hell" and "Third Eye Landslide" are my favs.
You will not find balls-to-the-wall sleaze metal like this anywhere else. This is the epitome of that style and Dave Wyndorf is one of the last true rock-stars. Check out all their other stuff, too. They have never struck out when releasing an album.

5 out of 5 stars Raw energy.......2007-05-18

This is the album to listen to. If you liked the first few tracks from Dopes to Infinity, then this is for you. From the first track, this album does not let up. There are so many good tracks, it is hard to choose a favorite. I especially like "See you in Hell" because of the groovy, psychedelic vibe it has going. I've always been a fan of the heavy, in your face tracks and this cd is filled with them. This is by far my favorite MM album.

5 out of 5 stars ROCKIN' OUT.......2006-07-26

For how cheap you can obtain "Powertrip" for, you should take full advantage. This is their most mainstream record, but also rocks the most. By "rocks" of course, that means it doesn't follow previous monster magnet material as much, but it's a marvelously progressive record. Magnet evolves like every other band, but opposed to most other bands, Dave wyndorf's naturally amazing song writing far excedes the standard to most evolving bands. "Powertrip" is Monster Magnet's debut, to signify breaking out of the underground, but throughout their career sustain and posess that same great energy they've harnessed, and like a fine wine, has only gotten better with time.

5 out of 5 stars "The Gods told me to relax...".......2005-09-16

YES! This is the stuff, the righteous 'n' raucous scalding stoner rock with brains and a heart and a sense of humor. So many bands profess to purvey it but almost none deliver the goods except Brother Wyndorf & Co.

Only two questions: Why did the Magnet not become mammoth stars? And how did the far less interesting Queens of the Stone Age get so dadblamed big?

Verily, these are eternal mysteries.

"I'm never gonna work another day in my life/The Gods told me to relax, they said I'm gonna get fixed up right."

4 out of 5 stars Monstrous........2005-07-05

You can pretty much just look at the cover of this album and know it's gonna be good. Anybody who's drawn to the Magnet (no pun intended), should totally dig this. It's their typical psychedelic-stoner-metal. I hesitate to say "Powertrip" is as good as "Dopes", but it's roughly as rockin'. "Crop Circle" and the title track kick this off in grand style, and it doesn't let up much after. "Space Lord" of course is the bomb, and drops like one. If looking for your first Monster Magnet disc, this is a good pick. Fans of The Atomic Bitchwax, Soundgarden, and QOTSA enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A classic of the New York crossover scene.......2004-05-23

An amazingly fast 2nd effort from these NYHC crossover kings. A lot less varied than previous effort 'Immaculate Deception' as well as being more metallic in nature. This unfortunately would be their last album before they would form the more mainstream orientated Scatterbrain a year later. Kind of like Crumbsuckers but more intense and faster without the appalling vocals.

5 out of 5 stars A true metal masterpiece!.......2004-04-30

This is by far the crowning achievement for both Ludichrist and Scatterbrain (LC's failed attempt at commercial success). Don't bother with their first album, Immaculate Deception, unless you've got some money to burn, because it doesn't even come close to Powertrip.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated?you better believe it!.......1999-12-14

This album has got to be one of the most underrated of the entire 80's.It rips so hard you have got to love it!Imagine an absolutely fierce hardcore band from NY with the most technically killer chops.Add to that a smart sense of humor.WALA this is it,man.BUY IT,FOOL!

2 out of 5 stars This depresses me.......1999-07-07

The album is as good as it was in 1988. There is one slight problem, though...the last two tracks were omitted. If you can find an original release of this album, opt for it instead. IWO JIMA and One For the Road are missing from this recording and they are at least as important to the album as anything that you will hear.

5 out of 5 stars Ludichrist's Powertrip redefines what hardcore music is........1999-02-07

I think that Ludichrist is one of the most underrated hardcore/punk acts of their time. This album is packed with catchy rhythms, phat breakdowns, and a boat-load of talent. I mean, how many hardcore bands can go from songs that remind you of groups like Minor Threat, Everybody's Problem, or old-school Mucky Pup, and than break into Bethoven's 5th. Each band member's individual talent shines through (especially the drummer's)and the lyrics have a strong message behind them. I recommend this album to anyone into this type of music genre. Their first CD is also great, but isn't as tight. Ludichrist also split up to form a band call Scatterbrain, but they lack the energy and seem to be afraid to try anything different. But Powertrip is worth every penny, get it now!!!

I got Powertrip after hearing Look To Your Orb on the Matrix soundtrack, and wasn't disappointed. Every track oozes with Monster Magnet's bizarre thundering space rock :) Worth buying just for Baby Gotterdamerung and the title track, Powertrip.

These guys broke into a relatively unknown market in the late 80's with "hard-core rap". Their sound is one of the most unique and powerful I've ever heard. Every member of the band is extremely talented. It's a shame they broke up and didn't produce more of the hits found on Powertrip.

3 out of 5 stars Monster Magnet - 'Let It Ride' (A&M) .......2007-02-25

Basically, one non-lp track CD single of "Big God" that was first available 'free' in most music stores for like a month or so after the release of Monster Magnet's 'Powertrip' CD. Then there's a ten second snippet, "Say It" of a girl repeatedly saying the band's name. "Big God" here is your typical space metal slammin' Magnet, but the price here is a bit steep for a one song-track CDS.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK IS STILL ALIVE.......2000-11-14

Monster Magnet has been a staple in my cd collection since '95 and should be in any rock afficianado's cd case. All of their cds are worth getting and i won't hesitate to get the soon to be released fifth cd "God says NO" or the other possible title "Heads Explode." Hopefully the sooner the better.

2 out of 5 stars Good Riffs, inconsistant songwrting........1999-07-25

Not a bad CD, the riffs are good, but some of the lyrics venture off into Spinal Tap territory with the sexual metaphors and images that I had to laugh at some of those. In other songs, the lyrics were more creative, but most of the time they just got in the way for me. However, like I said the riffs are pretty solid throghout.

5 out of 5 stars Cool as all heck.......1999-04-18

I was never especially "into" Monster Magnet, or, for that matter, into "heavy" music at all. However, listening to this CD has changed all that for me. "Powertrip" is one of the few CDs that I have that I can honestly say that I really love. I don't know what Monster Magnet will do next, but if it's another step up this large, I'll be watching for it.

5 out of 5 stars Let the pigeons loose...........1998-10-19

Guitar Gods are not dead they're hiding in awe of the KAOTIK riffs that tear through this whole albumn. Originally hesitant and not a Monster fan , i was blown away by the shear simpleness of it all. Every now and then you hear a song and say i wish i wrote that , but , a whole albumn. So as long as these guys keep at it the Gods will hide. Monster magnet are cruising the Vegas desert at 200 mph and are just getting in to third gear , so be warned. Crop circle hunting and looking to rip your ears off your crainium the boys have put together an albumn that starts with lulling you into a false sense of security and then hitting you over the head with a hammer. "i got a nail in my head and a hole in my arm , i'm driving the tractor on the drug farm". As a result my stereo is now forever imprinted with remnants of Powertrip.
