This CD, and the band itself, were largely ignored at this point in their career. You could make a good argument that this is really an early Mogg/Way live release, as they are the only "accepted" members in the band at this point. The die hard completists know that excusing this is a big mistake. Lawrence Archer plays lead guitar, very good but not in the same league of his predecessors. I would have loved to hear "Atomic"Tommy McClendon's take on these songs (Paul Chapman's replacement on the two prior releases. Chapman replaced Michael Schenker). They went back to familiar musical territory. Fortunately the album "Misdemeanor", an obvious sell out, was limited to that album alone. This tour was in support of "High Stakes and Dangerous Men". The band actually played & recorded several tracks from that release. Now, after one or two songs from whatever the current release is, the show is primarily "greatest hits" material. Because "High Stakes..." didn't see the support other releases had, this live set is an afterthought as well. That's too bad because this show rocks, just like "High Stakes..." did. It's one of the better albums in UFO's arsenal. Much of the band's best material was written without Michael Schenker, and all era's of the band are represented on this live offering . The tracks include the gazillionth recording of "Love to Love", "Lights Out" & "Doctor Doctor"...of course. Nine of the songs are very familiar tracks. When you add 5 from "High Stakes...", it makes this a must for all UFO fans.

This is going to be a short but helpfull info. review of this CD:
First let me start by letting you know Schenker is not playing in any of these songs,This is a concert recorded June 20/1992 I don't understand why it has the cover from the original album,I bought this CD some years ago and it has a different cover,now Laurence Archer does a better job playing Love to Love,Lights Out and the rest of the Schenker songs than Paul Chapman did,Archer played these versions pretty close to the versions of Strangers in the night,they sounded great, this is the line up:

I should also mention there's another recording out of this concert I guess is something new that came out it's call( DVD-AUDIO ENHANCE)and I like a fool ordered right away without really reading about it,thinking I was getting the full concert on DVD, this is what you'll get the soundtrack and the lyrics on the screen and the ufo story which any UFO/MSG fan pretty much knows by now,so I was dissapointed regarding that deal,well, I hope this info. helps anyone in someway or another!

Lights Out (1977.) UFO's sixth studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
UFO had their musical beginnings in Great Britain in the late sixties. Taking their name from a legendary music club, the band recorded two albums in the early seventies with a weird-but-still-excellent space rock sound all their own. These two albums, featuring guitarist Mick Bolton, were great albums but did not sell well or do well on the charts. Not long after their release, Bolton parted ways with the band. This was not the end of the band by any means, but rather, a new beginning. After Bolton left, the group had Scorpions guitarist Michael Schenker play for them as a temporary stand-in. The group was so satisfied with the young German guitar virtuoso that he became a permanent member of the band! The band would record many albums with Schenker, including many of those that would be deemed the band's finest works! How does 1977's Lights Out, the fourth one to feature Schenker, measure up? Read on and find out!

OVERVIEW:
UFO released their sixth studio album, Force It, in 1977. The album featured Phil Mogg on lead vocals, Pete Way on bass, Andy Parker on drums, Michael Schenker on lead guitar, and Paul Raymond on keyboards. This was Raymond's first album with the band; he replaced previous keyboardist Danny Peyronel. Tracklist consists of Too Hot To Handle, Just Another Suicide, Try Me, Lights Out, Gettin' Ready, Alone Again Or, Electric Phase, and Love To Love.

REVIEW:
During UFO's heyday with Michael Schenker from 1973-1979, they attained an all-time high they would never again reach. Phenomenon, the first of the Schenker albums, was an awesome classic hard rock album, but it didn't score very many hits for the group. Alternatively, Force It, the second album to feature Schenker, took the band's sound in a more commercial-oriented direction, and they scored many more hits as a result. However, it did leave a lot to be desired. Finally, on the No Heavy Petting album, UFO managed to find that "happy medium" sound - one that would score them several hits, and at the same time, maintain the hard rocking edge the band had back in on Phenomenon. Lights out, the fourth release to feature Schenker, is often hailed as the ultimate UFO album, and after giving it a listen, it isn't hard to see why. This is UFO at their best! Let's take a look at the tracklist.

-SIDE A-

-Too Hot To Handle: This song, the album's opener, is one of the biggest hits that the band ever had. It just might be their most popular song ever, and it isn't hard to see why. The straight-up, seventies-flavored tune is the perfect mix of pop rock and hard rock. Why do fans love this song so much? Give it a listen, and you'll find out. THIS is the way to start an album!

-Just Another Suicide: Here we have a tune that was never a hit for the band, but it certainly scores high in the quality department. Taking a melodic sound fusing pop rock and hard rock elements alike, and throwing some keyboards into the mixture, the band succeeds beautifully. Don't pass this track by - it's definitely one of the most underrated UFO songs!

-Try Me: Here we have a song that's a far cry from your average UFO song. It's more a ballad than anything else, with minimal rock and roll sounds, except for in the final minute in which Michael Schenker joins the fray. The song mostly uses pianos and orchestral backing arrangements. Despite its irregularity when compared to other songs on the album, it is still a damn good one.

-Lights Out: The title track on the album became a huge hit for the band. With its classic hard rock sound, which is intensive on organs and keyboards, what's not to love? This here is one of the quintessential UFO classics, and when you give it a listen, you'll see why so many fans hold this one in such high regard.

-SIDE B-

-Gettin' Ready: And here we go back to that classic UFO sound, like only they could do, in which they combine hard rock with pop rock. The instrumentation in this song actually sounds kind of like what you'd expect in a Tom Petty song. But it's distinctly UFO all the way. Definitely one of my favorites.

-Alone Again Or: Here the band covers the old Love song (and by Love song, I mean it was originally done by the American sixties rock band love.) What's weird is that UFO's cover of the song does not differ substantially from Love's original - and it actually fits on the album very well! Great song. Every bit as good as the original, and a true UFO classic.

-Electric Phase: If it's guitar-intensive classic rock you desire, the band serves up plenty of it here. This mid-paced tune rocks hard, and with all the classic elements you desire from a UFO song, what's not to love? UFO has a lot of underrated masterpieces - this is one of the many.

-Love To Love: Nearly eight minutes in length, this album closer became one of the most popular songs that UFO ever recorded. Essentially, the song is a proto-power ballad of sorts, combining slow and melodic elements with the tried-and-true classic UFO sound. Even though it's not really what you would expect from a band generally regarded as classic hard rockers, it's an awesome song - its status as one of the band's biggest hits should have told you that!

OVERALL:
Overall, Michael Schenker's fourth album with UFO is another excellent one. With the ability to combine straight-up hard rock and the ability to score big hits alike, the band had reached their pinnacle. If you're new to UFO, the Michael Schenker albums, Lights Out and Obsession in particular, are the best place to start your collection. Although the band's collaboration with Schenker only lasted a few years, there is no denying that the music created by the band in this period is nothing short of excellent, and difficult to top musically. Final verdict? This album is highly recommended!

EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, UFO albums are extremely difficult to find in America. Some of them (generally only the newest albums and the compilations) can be found in some American stores, but if you want the classic albums, expect to do a lot of hunting high and low. They are well worth buying, but more likely than not, you'll have to order than online due to their scarcity in the United States.

The best live UFO album since "Strangers".......2000-04-05

This CD is from a show recorded 6/20/92 at Tokyo's Club Citta shortly after UFO finished work on the High Stakes and Dangerous Men album. The live versions of the five songs covered from that album absolutely destroy the studio versions. The band was HOT this night! The remaining tracks are classic UFO tunes from the Lights Out and Obsession period including killer versions of Cherry, Doctor Doctor and Lights Out. The real surprise here and the best kept secret of the rock guitar world is lead guitarist Lawrence Archer. His playing style maintains the melodic Schenker touch but adds the technical horsepower of Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie VanHalen. The incredible version of Rock Bottom is alone worth the price of this CD and may be the best ever recorded by any incarnation of UFO. It's unfortunate that after turning in the performance of a lifetime, Lawrence parted ways with UFO and basically disappeared when he should have been a superstar guitarist (does anybody know where he went to?). Overall, the performance on this album gives Strangers in the Night a run for it's money and should be in every UFO collection.

Keeps growing on me.......2002-09-23

Several times I've decided to sell this to make room, but each time I give it "one last listen" and end up keeping it. It's NOT "Strangers in the Night" which is still the best this band ever did. But the sound is better than my non-remastered copy of Strangers, and the band jam out pretty well (much better than on BBC 1 Live), and Phil Mogg sounds amazingly very much the same. It's kind of...more modern or something, and I've found myself liking the "newer" songs quite a bit.

Actually most guitarists aren't Michael Schenker !!.......2002-08-29

After all I'm not Schenker, either are you and neither is Laurence Archer. He is after all...Laurence Archer and as such he gives one great PERFORMANCE on this album. Being a UFO completist, I thought I would finally pick this up, and was I ever pleasantly surprised! Think of all the live UFO sets "UFO Live" ( Mick Bolton) "Strangers in the Night" "Parker's Birthday" "Wolverhampton" "Regenerator" as well as the bonus Covenant live CD, not to mention all the Schenker live sets containing UFO classics! This one has always being overlooked in that it was this lineup of Mogg/Way with Clive Edwards and Laurence Archer that had recorded the not highly regarded High Stakes and Dangerous Men album. As such many have thought that this would be a "lesser" album with this lineup but this is not the case. UFO really stands the test of time based on great material to draw from, and here they perform the classics like a band possessed! Larry Archer is not only true to the original riffs but actually stretches out and makes these tunes his own. The guy shines. The rhythm section of Edwards and Way is large and in your face, Jem Davis handles Paul Raymond's keyboard sections faithfully and capabably and Phil Mogg is amazingly focused and in fine voice. Production on this is loud and clean with a good mix of audience participation in all the expected places. Lotsa goods here, Rock Bottom, Lights Out, Love to Love, Only You Can Rock Me, Too Hot to Handle, Doc Doc and Shoot Shoot, plus more. If you don't own any live UFO, of course you go buy "Strangers", but if you love Strangers and this band, you probably gonna get a good kick out of this. Caught me off guard and right out of left field which is exactly how I like it. Get it while it's in print!

The Guitar Guy Is Okay, But He's No Michael Schenker.......2001-03-24

Okay, short and sweet: This album is no "Strangers In The Night" (an excellent UFO live album). Part of the problem is the album's guitar sound -- or should I say, lack of it. With the "Strangers..." album, Michael Schenker and Paul Raymond accented one another. For example, when MS was soloing, PR would typically add a harmonious keyboard or rhythmic guitar sound that seemed to give the music a certain true concert hall fullness. With "Lights Out In Tokyo", it's just not there -- especially when listening to such UFO standards as "Rock Bottom" or "Love To Love." Phil Moog's voice still sounds good, but the lead guitar playing, in general, is nothing special. Sometimes it sounds like this guy (who, by the way, is not MS) is trying to hard, other times it as if he's not trying hard enough. Maybe that's how it is when you know you are playing tunes that some other guitarist made famous (which could explain why "Rock Bottom" is shorter on this album than on "Strangers...").

If you never got to see UFO in the days of MS, pick up "Strangers In The Night"; it's by far a better album. If your just curious about the sound of UFO lately, then maybe you'll be happy with this CD. Remember, you can always sell it on EBay once you grow tired of it -- which shouldn't take long.
